    The Master reveal is so satisfying to watch when the person doesn't know it's coming. The BBC kept teasing his appearance all season with trailers. It really ruined the surprise for a lot of people.

      The BBC revealed him due to one of the papers threatening to spoil his return.
      However, even though I knew that the John Simm was coming back, I didn't clue in that he was Razor until right near the end when he was talking with Missy.

    This two-part finale is not just the best Cybermen story of Modern Who, but one of the best Cybermen stories ever. These two episodes offer the perfect examination into what makes the Cybermen a true threat; 'World Enough and Time' shows us the grotesque body horror, while 'The Doctor Falls' shows us how truly relentless and never-ending they are. Bringing back the original 1966 Mondasian versions was a stroke of genius by Steven Moffat, taking what can be considered a ridiculous old design and making it sting, and that design is probably now my favourite Cyberman design alongside the 80's versions. Also, bringing back John Simm's Master and pairing him with Michelle Gomez's Missy was a great bonus. This was a great start to Capaldi's final adventure.

      Shitty TH-cam Account For the first time in three series, I think the second part of the finale was also great. For me, Death in Heaven was a massive step down from Dark Water and Hell Bent was a massive step down from Heaven Sent, so it was nice for The Doctor Falls to be *almost* as good as World Enough and Time.

    • @UltimateKyuubiFox
      @UltimateKyuubiFox 6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Ryan Pollard Interesting story about that, Peter Capaldi wanted to face off with the Mondasian Cyberman, possibly even have his final story with them, and Moffat only agreed out of respect for Peter’s wishes. It just so happens that when handed that original design, Moffat thought they looked ridiculous and realized that he needed to pull out all the stops to make them genuinely intimidating and so we wound up with one of the all-time best. Which says to me that Moffat really needs people to bounce ideas off of because whenever he’s challenged he excels.

      " That's the case for a lot of really talented writers and idea people. It's always a good thing to have at least two or three people around to bounce ideas off of because they can pull in stuff if it's too far out there or maybe spark a new idea and be there to help you flesh it out.

    Yeah, you at the end of this video sums it up. This episode was kinda shear terror to me, totally horrified me, but when it was over I just looked back and started gushing about all the little details that made it sooooo good. Capaldi's run for me is a little lack luster, but man are there a few gems that are just head and shoulders above anything else in the series, and this is one of them.

    Wow uploaded 13 seconds ago. Ahh, the reaction we all wish we could’ve had. Frantically typing this before I watch lol. The BBC announcing/spoiling The Master’s return 3 months prior to the broadcast of this episode was such a stupid move which made zero sense. They officially announced it because The Sun threatened to spoil it. But the only reason The Sun knew about it in the first place was because Simm was in the “coming soon” trailer which aired at the end of a press preview screening of The Pilot (and was also at the end of the broadcasted version). So if they hadn’t put him in the trailer, The Sun (and everybody else) would’ve been none the wiser.
    Hell, John Simm was filming in public in Cardiff (in full prosthetics) and NOBODY clocked on that it was him. This could’ve been a massive surprise and I can’t think of any logical reason for announcing his return. Maybe to bring back fans who haven’t watched the show since 2010? The viewing figures for Series 10 were still the lowest of all 10 series and pretty poor, so I don’t think announcing his return had any major affect on the viewing figures.
    Rant over. You probably knew all this by know lol. Great reaction (I assume) nonetheless :)

      I live in Canada, and we got spoiled. In the "Next time on" after the season premier, they showed clips of the Mondasian Cybermen, and The Master. So we knew he would show up at some point that season. So when the final story started, I knew they both had to show up. Watching a pure reaction was amazing.

    Your excitement over this episode at the end almost made me forget my sadness over the upcoming end of Twelve, so that was great :D Your thoughts there I think summed up some themes about this episode (and Bill and Twelve and the rest of the gang) very nicely.
    I had a feeling you'd love this one. Because outside of just being a very well-written episode, it has 1) Missy, 2) Cybermen and 3) Twists that you hadn't been spoiled on. Which was lucky, most of us where, since the BBC decided to put John Simm in the series 10 trailer. Still bitter over that, so I'm living the surprise through reactions.
    As always, people have SO MANY OPINIONS about Doctor Who, but I love this episode to bits. It immediately made its way up into my top 10 episodes.
    While I'm still sad that it's nearly caught up (it is a bit different to be caught up, as you say), I'm really looking forward to the next couple of weeks. Hope you feel better soon!

    SPOILER ALERT!
    If BBC had not reveal the return of the John Simm's Master and the Mondasians Cybermen, this amazing episode would have shocked New Who's fans in the same way that "Earthshock" shocked Classic Who fans in the 1980s.

      I work very hard to miss spoilers and it was a perfect episode. I'd worked out it was going to be Cybermen from the first time you hear the voice (when they retrieved Bill from the bridge, I think) but the Mondasian-look was a complete surprise. I'd also picked up that there was something odd about Mr Razor but I had no clue it was the Master until he started talking to Missy.

    • @ojwh1933

      (Spoilers)
      Personally, I'd differentiate between the Series 3 and 2008 - 2010 Specials Master.
      The latter went a bit too over-the-top for me, at least in the performance. I can't remember enough about the way he was written as a character but his situation (revived by magic?, has superpowers? needs to eat people?) wasn't handled particularly well.
      However, I think he's great in Series 3. He's OTT but also grounded and believable, and I think his character is given a lot in the writing. And he even has those deeper moments in the latter; it's just hard to ignore the unexplained (seemingly random) situational things.
      Whereas in Series 10, I don't think he's given very much as a character. He's evil and sexist and that's about it. If you prefer the calmer approach as a portrayal (I'm guessing that's the case but please do correct me if not), fair enough. I quite dislike there are two versions as there's a distinct disconnect there but I can understand fundamentally preferring one over the other. However, I feel there is a layered depth to RTD's version that we don't see in Moffat's.

    Now that Season Ten is behind us, I'm starting to wonder just how much of modern Who might have taken place not in Earth's timeline, but that of Mondas. Missy's discovery that the ship came from Mondas is a big reveal and a surprise to those who managed to avoid the relentless BBC spoilering, but for fans of Nu-Who the reference would have been meaningless. After all, it was only mentioned in detail in The Tenth Planet, way back in 1966, long before most current fans were even born. Setting the stories in Mondas's timeline would solve a lot of the weird continuity that besets Who, as in "it happened on Mondas, not Earth." It's the kind of trick Moffat would pull, too.
    There are hints in Season Ten that something weird is happening but, if you pull back and look, the first clue is dangled in "The Pandorica Opens". There's another clue in "A Good Man Goes To War." Another in "Oxygen". And then, finally, there's "World Enough And Time." What do these four stories have in common?
    Blue guys.
    Dorium Maldovar, the black marketeer, was "old, fat and blue." Was he from Mondas?
    Then there's the blue guy in "Oxygen". There's no mention by anyone in the story that he's blue. Only Bill makes any mention of it.
    And then there's the blue guy in "World Enough And Time", who's clearly from Mondas, works on a Mondasian starship and that's clearly normal for Mondas.
    The Doctor is unfazed by the appearance of all these blue guys. Clearly, for him, it's just normality. But for the viewer, the surprise is that there's only one place where blue guys are part of the everyday population - Mondas.
    So now I'm wondering just how long Mondas has been there in the background, the faintest, tiniest hint from Moffat that all is not as it seems.

    John Simm's Beard and disguise were a definite nod to the original series Masters who (two out of three of which) had beards and loved disguises. :) Also since Capaldi's Doctor has a dash of Pertwee in him, it's fitting to have him face a bearded Master since The Original Roger Delgado Master first appeared with Jon Pertwee's 3rd Doctor.

  • @ojwh1933
    @ojwh1933 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is the episode I think everyone was waiting for your reaction to since it came out. I'm sure other people are going to say in the comments but anyone who followed the show at the time knew both the Cybermen and John Simm's Master were returning for the finale so we had a spoiled experience unfortunately.
    Thankfully, the new showrunner is making sure to keep as much secret as possible while enticing the audience but at the time of Series 10, the BBC had announced the Cybermen, announced John Simm's Master, announced John Simm's Master a couple more times, and showed both in several trailers.
    So unless you were a really casual fan who avoided the internet and Next Time trailers, you knew what was coming. Considering how much I enjoyed the episode even knowing that, I'd love to know what I'd have thought if I didn't. It probably would've gone down as one of the biggest episodes in 'Doctor Who's history. That's why it's particularly enjoyable to see the reactions of people who weren't aware.
    Also, yes, some operating rooms are referred to as "operating theatres". The reason for this is that it was once considered a spectacle to witness someone performing surgery (similar to public executions, I'm guessing).
    11:26 - Slight hints with the Master's musical theme there.

  • @Wannabe_Baby
    @Wannabe_Baby 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    10/10 reaction. :) I think I liked your reaction when you figured out that it was the Cybermen even more than the Master reveal. Oh, and when you went slightly crazy in the last minute of the video. That was amazing too. :P
    I also didn't like John Simm but he is better in the final episode of season ten (as I'm sure you know by now). He's more serious and malevolent, rather than a pantomime clown. If he played it the same way back in season three, I'd have liked him a lot more. As for this episode, I love it. 10/10. I actually tend not to like Cybermen episodes but this one really gets across the body horror aspect of them, which is great. Had the BBC not spoiled their John Simm reveal in the Next Time trailers, this probably would've been my favourite episode of Doctor Who.

      MrAzmatMahmood - I actually didn't like Missy in season 8 or 9. She reminded me of Moriarty from Sherlock, who I hated. I liked her more in season 10, when she toned it down.
      Also, she wasn't more pantomime than John Simm at all. Are you forgetting the dancing around to Scissor Sisters?

    • @Mrazmatmahmood
      @Mrazmatmahmood 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wannabe_Baby Fair enough. I see so many people say how much they disliked Simm's Master because he was so OTT and that the Master shouldn't be like that. Then, in the same breath praise Missy and go on about how much of an improvement she was over Simm in that regard, like what!? At least your consistent with your criticism.
      Also, yes I do remember that ONE scene with Simm dancing, but have you forgotten the scenes in series 8 with Missy dancing? How about in series 9 or the scene in this very episode where she dances and even dabs? Missy was definitely more pantomime than Simm in every way. I love them both though.

    If you like Cybermen stories - and especially this type of Cybermen story - I highly recommend the Big Finish audio play _Spare Parts._ It also does "Genesis of the Cybermen", but set on their homeworld Mondas, and it's quite possibly the scariest Doctor Who story there is. The Cyber-Committee insisting that it's still human is truly disturbing.

    G'day Jess. That is in my opinion one of your best reaction videos you have done. Everything you expressed, i expressed when i first watched this last year on ABC iview the Sunday morning it was posted.
    All the elements and emotions were there, Bilk becoming a Cyberman, John Simms Master (so much better here then under RTD. Felt like old school Master, Roger Delgado).
    Everyone was brilliant, Peter, Michelle, Pearl, Matt, and of course the brilliant Rachel's sensational direction, the best in 21st century Who.
    When i first started the episode, i was hit for six with that regeneration, thinking What the Hell, but the way it gets handled is unquie and brilliant. In fact if i remember that first scene was filmed only 2 weeks before hand, the quickest turnaround from filming to broadcast since the 1960s, when they were filming the same story as it was being broadcast ( ie. Filming part 4 as part 1 was on the air). This was because they were filming the Christmas ep at the same time as this was broadcast.
    I love your analysis of this Doctor's relationship with his companions. He is very much like a teacher and the characteristics of Clara and Bill while different are similar in that they are learning from him. If you like this teacher/student relationship then you would live 7 and Ace.
    Anyway, fab work and have tissues next week if you haven't already watched it.
    Love your week, from Liverpool, Australia. ❤❤❤
    P.S - i understand your sickness, because i can feel a sickness coming, especially with a sore throat.

    Likely the only person on the planet who did not have much of the episode spoiled for her. ^_^
