The behind the scenes Confidential episode for this one is worth the watch. The technical team did a fantastic job, as well as the actors.

It's a really well done stage play which is mostly confined to one set. Nothing is explained because whatever the bad thing is doesn't matter because it's all about the way humans behave and sometimes that's flat out terrifying.

I saw this as one of my first episodes at random on BBC America. ....late at night. I had no idea who the Doctor was let alone Donna and it was absolutely chilling. Later watching it in sequence I kind of love how eerie it remained as one of those few episodes where no questions are ever really answered.
It kind of reminds me of the Twilight Zone

So glad this got reuploaded cos it got removed before I had chance to watch it and this is the one i desperately wanted to see commentary on. idk if it was intentional or not, but the treatment of both Black female characters in this is very interesting. They're the ones who realise the problems and fix the situation all whilst being belittled, ignored or talked over. And the older white people are the ones causing the conflict. Even Jethro wasn't on board with the nonsensical panic, but his parents kept talking him into it, he was more focused on observing and learning. No reactors ever seems to pick up on it or if they do they don't mention it, they just focus on human nature being the monster here. Also Skye an older, seemingly higher class, white woman instantly thinking she's the victim in this situation even though she's surrounded by other people, and the creature instantly plays victim when it fully takes over skye and the doctor. The couple instantly look for an other to blame even asking if the doctor was an immigrant. Also the commentary of a Black woman saving the day, but going unremembered because no one knows her name. Sorry for the long comment I just love the commentary of this episode. So glad to see yall picked up on it.

When traveling alone, depending on your personality type, you meet a lot of new people. I’ve been invited to birthday parties or July 4th celebrations, dinners and barbecues by complete strangers when traveling alone. Unless they set off my freak alert I’ve taken them up on it. Even been invited to stay in people guest bedrooms on occasion. Usually when an older couple found out I was traveling alone and sleeping in the car. I’ve never taken up that offer. But I did become friend with a lady and her mother let me stay at her place anytime I went to the beach. He had and antiretroviral apartment downstairs, it was fantastic. I always brought her a gift, she was such a sweet lady.
I was never comfortable enough to take anyone up on that offer. You don’t meet as many people when you’re traveling with other people.

Fun Fact. Many people will post the exact same ‘Fun Fact’ without reading that the same ‘Fun Fact’ has already been posted many times. Professor Hobbs is played by the son of the second Doctor.

When I first saw this episode, I made the mistake of binge watching the previous two and this one in one go...at night...while living in an apartment that allowed me to hear my neighbors moving around enough that it would sound like someone knocking on the walls. Never doing that again.

This is one of my most rewatched episodes. It's just so perfect, not a single wasted line and the raw humanity both positives and negatives on display is haunting. When I was a child seeing this I was so haunted by the realization we didn't know the hostess' name, it really moved me. Now a bit older I also notice that the white people make a lot of the problems, Doctor included, while the black women are seeing/thinking more. Your reaction is really enjoyable and thoughtful. Thanks for reuploading!

Most of my friends were guys growing up (still are really), and was always rather envious of the simplicity of guys working out their problems with each other - fight, and afterwards you're either fast friends or never spoke again...

This episode reminds me very much of Alfred Hitchcocks 1944 film Lifeboat. It’s a serious look at human behavior, great film. It’s got a 7.6 IMDB with 32k votes and 87% Audience on Rotten Tomato’s with over 5k ratings. I happened upon it half way through in the middle of the night as a teen and was instantly enthralled. Took forever to find out what the movie was because this was the 80’s… and if you didn’t know, you just didn’t know. Synopsis below if interested.
“In this tense Alfred Hitchcock thriller, based on a John Steinbeck novella, American and British civilians who have survived the sinking of their ship by a German submarine struggle to reach land in a crowded lifeboat. When a German officer (Walter Slezak) is rescued from the water, the group allows him to board, but his presence only increases the tensions on the boat. Soon treachery ensues, and the population of the vessel gradually decreases as conflicts come to a head.”

Enjoyed the reaction and commentary you both had for this episode. We always see how the doctor can rally a people into doing amazing, selfless things to help. Midnight is I believe the first time we see his charm, intellect, alienness, and condescension backfire in the most horrific way. But the saddest part is just how realistic a bunch of scared humans will slip into fear-based tribalism. Anyway, for the algorithm! For the re-upload!

I don't think it's any particular social study. I think it's a study in human nature, and the tendency to mob mentality when you feel threatened.
