    Fun fact about Lilo & Stitch. Aloha Oi is a song originally written by Hawaii's last Queen before the country was anexed, and it's basically her farwell to her country as she knew it before it was forcibly taken by an invading power. I find it incredibly powerful that they used it as a symbol of Nanis pain over her family being torn apart by agents of that very government. Especially for disney in the 2000's.

    • @Darkstriker133713
      @Darkstriker133713 ปีที่แล้ว +109

      The only thing is that makes this song bitter is that she herself didn't experience Hawaii as an untouched country. It was told to her by her parents or grandparents who were the last few Hawaiians who knew what true Hawaiian language and culture was before the British and Americans. The song was a eulogy for a Hawaii she never knew.

    I really appreciate how Lilo is written. They wrote her as a problematic child bc that’s how a lot of children who have to deal with the trauma of losing their parents, especially as young as her, act. I love how they don’t write her as a nuisance, but as a child who’s gone through something really terrible and as a result acts different compared to the average child or the other girls in the movie. It isn’t just her being the quirky kid, and it isn’t the characters victimizing her too much or looking/acting w disgust around her bc of how she acts out.

    18:35 To be fair, I haven't seen the film in a while, but I think the lesson Tiana was supposed to learn was to not focus on achieving her dream to the unhealthy degree she displayed at the beginning of the movie. She was working so hard to raise the money, that she was:
    - Staying up late to the point of only getting seconds of sleep each morning (displayed during the time skip where she entered her room in her maid uniform and then had to get ready to work at the diner)
    - Constantly choosing work over hanging out with her friends (shown during her conversation with said friends)
    - Having to be convinced by Charlette (Tiana's closest and best friend) to take time off work and go to her ball, and even then Charlette had to give her a huge tip to make up for the money Tiana could potentially lose by not working.
    Her life hinged so much on achieving her dream, that when the guys said someone else bought the building she was gonna buy for her restaurant, she spiraled into a depression before her encounter with Naveen shifted her mind elsewhere.

    • @xLolwat
      @xLolwat ปีที่แล้ว +240

      Just wanted to say that I agree, so much. The whole point is that a dream job is not everything in life, and it certainly isn't worth working yourself to death for. Tiana definitely had a lesson to learn at the start of the movie.

      @Walking_Spinel ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Just saw the movie for the first time last week. Imo I don't think she had a lesson to learn. She literally needed the money to take care of herself and open her own restaurant. I can understand in hindsight that she focused a little too much on work to the point where she wouldn't hang out with people and enjoy herself, but given her situation, I don't blame her. I found it kinda realistic

    I'm glad we got Lilo and Stitch at all honestly, but I'm so upset that they cut out that MASSIVE deleted scene of her scaring the tourists away from the beach just to punctuate how much she resents her home being treated like a vacation resort where she's basically seen as a photo opportunity just for being a native islander.
    That scene got so close to being finalized before it was cut too, literally only needing to be colored and cleaned up, it's such a shame because the only leftover from that concept is her taking pictures of tourists as a way of turning the tables on that disrespect. The movie doesn't give any context to her photos except to make it look like a quirky hobby instead of a calculated "see how you like it" revenge behavior.
    Then AGAIN when she's vengeful to her lil white friends predominantly taking up space in hula dancing school while going out of their way to other her and make her feel unwanted, the movie tries to make SURE white audiences can't pick up that maybe part of her frustration has to do with the other islanders trying to understand her trauma and grief, while Murtle just flat out calls her crazy to her face.
    The original uncut Lilo and Stitch was gonna be about how hard it is for a child to grapple with her culture being turned into theme park bullshit and it would have gone hard as hell.

      there was also another deleted scene that further explored how traumatized she was by her parents' death. basically, stitch fucks up by slapping away a fish (i believe to be the same fish she feeds sandwiches) and laughing when the fish gets eaten by seagulls, and lilo gets really mad at him and says "you must never let your family die!".
      this sentence means that lilo feels responsible for her parents' death bc she believes the fish she feeds sandwiches controls weather, and her parents died in a car accident caused by heavy rain. she must've forgotten to feed him that day, which made her believe he was upset and therefore made it.
      this movie could've gone so much harder, damn.

    Honestly, Jon Silver and Jim Hawkins relationship has to be my favorite of any Disney movie, which is saying a lot.
    Simply because it's one of the few movies where the villain and the hero interact with each other positively. They help each other grow, despite the fact Jim, and the audience, already knows Silver is the villain. We're all told this fact when Jim's handed the map. Yet, throughout the movie, we watch as the two grow closer and become better people thanks to one another, all the while we know that it has to end eventually. Silver acting as a sort of father figure to Jim, who comes from a broken home, and helping him grow into a confident young man. Whereas Jim helps Silver realize that there's more to life than treasure, that it's good to appreciate the nonmaterial things.
    Their relationship is what makes Treasure Planet such a good movie for me.

      This isn’t just your regular old cheesy steampunk though, it’s actually an extremely intricate, well thought out and researched, cohesive and creative take on the visual genre - probably the best one in my opinion. I don’t think you need to be a steampunk fan to appreciate this world, any fan of good world-building and aesthetics would enjoy it. I find it extremely bizarre that, for someone who consumes a lot of media, he didn’t even think it was decent. Truly one of those things which I think is objectively good, if not exceptional and a masterclass in world-building. Schafrillas is quite baffling to me sometimes to be honest.

Loads of people love it, and that should be more important than how much money it made. Besides, isn't a late release better than no release at all? And why do you people keep using the word "Disney?" When you say that, you're literally talking about God knows how many people working there. Do you honestly think every Disney worker sabotaged it? If so, that's a stupid and incorrect thought. It was only the people in charge who made it come out when it did. My point is: It was nearly 20 years ago, and it wasn't a crime against humanity. So let it go.

Not only becomes a freak to the town, but also upsets her father who wanted her to improve as a better person (and have the mother being alive as well). In order to give confidence, she was sent to a summer school called Camp-Yes-You-Can where she met her friends like in the final product but with Ugly Duckling being a boy. The sheep who ran the camp turned out to be wolves in disguise who were planning to eat all the students. Now, it is up to Chicken Little to confront her fears and save the day. The scrapped version of Chicken Little could've been great in the final product but too bad Disney can't accept that.

    A lot of people say that Princess and the Frog is based on the old fairy tale of the frog prince, but it's loosely based on a book that's in turn loosely inspired by that story that's called the Frog Princess. In the original book the titular princess turned into a frog because a bracelet her aunt gave her to keep her from getting cursed had an unforeseen reaction with the curse that was on the prince (it was enchanted to turn any magic she got involved with back on the caster). And you're right, Charlotte and her father don't have any equivalents in the book, they probably were added for the reason you think.

    I think a fan's relationship with their father (especially a son's relationship) defines how each responds to Treasure Planet. That is why so many guys that grew up with that movie care about it so much because they see aspects of their own father-son relationship in it. I can recognize that it isn't overall as quality of a movie as many make it out to be, but it is personally meaningful to me and one of the few Disney movies of this era that really brings out deeper emotions from me, so I get why so many love it.

    There's actually a deleted segment of Lilo and Stitch that I think was a real shame to be omitted. In Lilo's room the walls are plastered with photographs of seemingly random people. This was actually explained to be due to the fact that tourists would take photos of Lilo in public because she's a "real hawaiian girl" (a scene specifically cut was a car full of tourists taking a photo of her in passing without consent). So in protest she takes candid photos of tourists and hangs them up on her wall. I guess the whole aspect was cut because Disney wasn't ready to tackle that kind of racism. Learning about it made Lilo and Stitch that much better to me.
    EDIT: I was actually reminded/informed about that car scene in the comments below, none of the drivers take a picture of Lilo, but ask her where the beach is. One of the drivers ask her if she speaks english. Soon after Lilo arrives on the beach and a tourist remarks that she is "a real native", and another takes a picture of her. I conflated the two events into one, please forgive my senile brain.

      It also would've gone hand in hand with Nani's job at the luau. It really wasn't Hawaiian at all. It perpetuated stereotypes of Hawaiian culture that tourists believe, aka taking anything remotely Polynesian and calling it Hawaiian specifically. Nani's outfit, for example, is more Tahitian. David works as a fire performer, and that particular art is Tahitian as well. A Hawaiian luau doesn't look like that either. It's not a restaurant or a place, but a banquet or party. Nani calls her former boss a vampire, and I think they could've explored more how racist Nani's job actually was.

      I recall that they were trying to get to the beach (dumbasses don't realize that Hawaii is literally a freaking island, just drive anywhere and you'll eventually find one), and there were some punks who asked Lilo if she could "Speak English", it was more showing the ignorance of the tourist rather than the whole picture thing.

    Everyone always talks about how much of an underrated classic Treasure Planet was, but rarely mention Atlantis. Atlantis was one of the first mainstream films to use a “dieselpunk” aesthetic, and was one of the best 2D/3D Disney films visually. Plus, the fact that the story is so mature, kinda feeds into what I call “The Iron Giant” problem, where the movie is too adult and ambitious with its story telling and messages, as well as being quite off brand than what people are used too, that the marketing department just doesn’t know what to do with it. Atlantis was an experiment: Disney wanted to see if they could make an animated movie aimed at an older audience. It was intentionally darker and more ambitious than most of the others film, but because of this it didn't had an audience: many children were scared by it, the intended audience ignored it because they thought it was another kids cartoon with funny characters and catchy songs and Shrek and Tomb Raider wrecked it at the box office, attracting respectively the kids and the intended audience, leading to his obscurity.

    • @DZodiark10
      @DZodiark10 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      @@dragonofepics7324 I agree. Also this is just another example of “we want representation” being conflated with “we want representation but absolutely nothing bad can happen to them and they have to be flawless individuals or it’s bigotry.” Like..you can’t have your cake and eat it too, I’m sorry. A character being transformed into an animal or monster is a common trope, and when a lot of protags are POC by virtue of Disney trying to include them more..yeah, you’ll have that. It’s so dumb. The transformations that I remember were handled with respect, they never implied that “omg POC protag is a disgusting fucking animal!” It’s just coincidence by virtue of increased representation, which should be a good thing..and is, IMO. It’s just normalization. Minorities shouldn’t be the exemption, or put on a pedestal, it just alienates them further. Like, a black person turning into a fucking ape or something? Yeah that’d bad. But a Native American turning into a bear? Come on. Bears are seen as powerful, majestic, part of nature. On that note as well, personally, I tend to value animals above people...natures beauty and all that. I don’t see how a character becoming an animal is derogatory. That whole argument from Schaff felt really fucking pretentious and made me super uncomfortable.

I think its one of the best animated 2d films they ever made, with rolling down the byou and the madegra being great. All the songs I liked and Ray was better for me. They Balance each other out, tiana starts as a workaholic to the point where she risks losing the whole point of her dream (that being family and interaction) and the Prince starts as a douch who always depends on others to guide him through life as he’s never rlly worked for anything but buy the end tiana learns that having fun and interacting with the same people she wants to bring together will help her achieve her goals ams the Prince takes on the responsibility of himself and his own dreams and even more so he learns that being able to help himself and help someone he loves is all he needs...the kissing thing still doesn’t make sense tho

      when me and my mom were watching the movie, we actually did make some sense out of the whole “tiana kisses naveen and turns into a frog (somehow)” thing. basically, she was always taught about independence and having to work to earn things as a kid by her father, and handsome prince man who is now a frog comes to her one day and says that instead of putting in the extra effort, he can just buy her the restaurant she so desperately wants. so, she reluctantly agrees because it had been her lifelong goal for pretty much the entirety of her existence since her dad passed, kisses him, and boom, is now a frog! this didn’t make sense to most people as tiana is virtually the complete opposite of naveen: hard-working and independent, humble, etc, but when you think about it in a deeper sense, it kinda does. independence was one of the biggest values in her life, so just agreeing to let naveen buy the restaurant for her kinda contradicts the whole meaning of that. that isn’t to say she didn’t work hard, because she most certainly did, but yeah i guess her transforming into a frog did make a little sense

      I always assumed she turned into a frog cuz it wasn't supposed to happen at that moment. almost like it backfired. Like, Naveen was supposed to kiss a princess. Tiana was not a princess until the end CUZ she *married* Naveen and fell in love with him. the beginning was just an ol' quick peck. I thought maybe it woulda happened to anyone he kissed.

      while this all checks out story-wise, it's still missing the point. the point was mostly to question why this character arc couldn't have happened without turning the first black disney princess into a frog for the majority of her film, and additionally questioning why this means of character development is only chosen for characters who aren't white. the individual in-universe justification doesn't matter because it doesn't engage with the real-life implications of portraying people of color as animals, which is the whole reason it's being pointed out in the first place.

      @@juiceecads3894 tbh…I see it as just a coincidence OR perhaps these characters on these types of stories usually go hand in hand with life lessons linked to kinda advanced topics or places in history. Tiana lives in New Orleans and aspires to be something more but is kept in place due to her background and ppls lack of expectations same for most characters similar to her. So turning that character into an animal is usually done to introduce entirely bigger and more drastic challenges but they’re acc easier to understand. Turning someone into an animal has always been done to not simplify the character but the surroundings, the settings and the struggles they’d face as a human and acc focussed in on the characters. Making their motivations more clear. Giving them a set goal (to become human again) of which by the end they learn the lessons needed to achieve what they’re original plan was before they became a creature. It’s a pretty simple story tool and used nearly everywhere just in different ways and I think since these movies are ultimately for kids it’s probably better that way. Besides without the whole issue of the movie the acc base story line would be bland or would have ended way sooner. At the start of the film she essentially works for and gets her goal but the door is shut in her face. Without that event to launch character progression the movie is done at the finish line. Plus, it’s based off princes on the frog so they kinda had the big thing right there in their faces.

    18:36 Tiana actually had a "reason" for becoming a frog, and in fact it was that she "worked" too hard and was very obsessed with the "working" part of making a dream come true. Through the journey, and also through what Mama Odie wanted to point out to her (but she didn't understand), she learns not to be so obsessed with hard work and listening to her own self (digging a little deeper hehe), because everything she needed and what was more important she already had: love (as she states for Dr. Facilier). That was the point of her turning into a frog.

  • @BlueGuyTube

      It's more likely just the rules of magic in general. Their first kiss wasn't a kiss of true love and the woman giving the kiss wasn't a princess in any legal or traditional sense of the term, so the curse didn't break, but spread instead.
      They try to find a legal loophole (parade princess is a princess in a sense) but miss the timing; since there's no malice or selfishness by this point, the curse doesn't spread.
      Then on the wedding, Naveen and Tiana truly love each other (it's _true love's kiss_ that's more important than being a prince or princess per se in most Disney fairy tales) _and_ since Naveen is still a prince, in the instant of a legally binding wedding his wife is a princess. So now it's a legal princess and a kiss of true love, finally breaking the curse for both of them, just as they were willing to live with the curse for the rest of their lives.

    It's worth noting that Naveen's character arc wasn't really that he was egotistical and needed to be brought down a peg (though it was a flaw of his), it was moreso that he was privileged and lazy, a total contrast to Tiana's fixation on her goal to the point of overworking herself. They're both opposite extremes (which makes total sense given their lives), and on their adventure they both have a positive impact on balancing each other out; Tiana teaches Naveen responsibility and gives him a good work ethic, while Naveen helps Tiana loosen up and appreciate the connections in her life. And then as Mama Odie said all they needed was love to be happy, it was literally all they needed to turn human.
    Not trying to defend the weird, overused trend of Disney turning most of their POC leads into animals (disproportionately to their many, many white movies anyway), just trying to defend The Princess and the Frog's great story and amazing lead characters.
    EDIT: I also feel like I should add that, since a lot of other people talking about this don't really regard the nuance here, Tiana turning into a frog doesn't mean she "deserved" it for any character flaw; if the movie saw her determination to get her restaurant as a bad thing, she wouldn't have still gotten it at the end. She's like the Pacha/Belle of the duo, the sympathetic hero who's forced into this situation by the jerk, but also learns a thing or two herself on the journey and her developing relationship with the other character.
    OTHER EDIT: Modified my statement about the animal thing because a lot of replies are either missing the point or taking it in bad faith. I never said it undermined the rest of the representation in the films themselves, it's more of a gross marketing issue from the disney higher ups.

      @@sunhopii8534 Yeah, I mean I'm in no right to really say anything more about the topic than what I've heard from other POC who've been bothered by it. The real issue is that when there's been little representation by Disney overall, it's a little sus that most of them can't keep their POC leads as they are for most of the film (whether or not it's also been done in a few of their many, many white movies), and Disney (the corporation) absolutely has control over that in their animated movies, Pixar included. I personally think the real solution is to make more POC led movies than just the few that take part in the trope, but that wasn't the point of my original comment
