I agree with atlantis and treasure planet, perhaps because I didn't grow up with them, but found them to my liking as an adult, while emperors new groove is too childish for me. It may be because these movies killed bad (and good) people while the "worst" thing happening to someone in ENG is transformation: winning in a single fight against a crocodile, falling over a waterfall, there's no fear or excitement about what will happen anywhere in the movie. Just a "boohoo. I'm cold and it's raining" or "bohoo. This person is emperor instead of me" not to mention the devil on his shoulder doing a handstand, and not liking a quiche was the worst insult ever. Sorry. it's late and I become more caviling the later it gets but I wanted it off my shoulders :P Have a great day, and continue to enjoy these movies :)
What I love about Treasure Planet/Island is that Long John Silver is the most unique "villain"/antihero ever conceived. He's a ruthless pirate, yet has a soft spot.
I know this comment is over a year old at the time I'm replying but... I literally just saw the movie last night for the first time and I totally agree. I think instead of "villain" I'd just describe him as an antagonist kind of antihero? Like... maybe he's not necessarily a "villain" but he does butt heads with Jim.
@@smittywerbenjagermanjensen7989 He is a villain. He is the reason behind the movie's conflict, but he's also very sympathetic and he learns a lesson in the end where he learns that there are things more valuable than a whole planet of treasure. He is ruthless, greedy and fiendish and that's why Jim hates him once he learns of his true nature. But at the same time, he set Jim straight by teaching him how to take control of his life instead of just drifting through it. After Silver lets go of his obsession with treasure to save Jim, he recognizes that there are two sides to Silver. One of them is a ruthless pirate and the other one is the closest thing he had to a father.
@@Neb_Raska You weren't aware of it because it was an absolute flop with zero marketing. It was basically one of those direct to video/tv films that Disney makes a lot of in their spare time. There's been a lot of sequels to older Disney films that I wasn't aware of for years, and they are all terrible.
I'll keep this brief because I dont want to get anyone in trouble, but I know for certain that your theory is correct. When I was studying animation in college, I had a professor who had worked on Treasure Planet, and they assured me that the awful marketing for this movie was intentional. Disney wanted a reason to move away from 2D animation, and Treasure Planet was a carefully calculated scapegoat. They poured a ton of effort and talent into this movie, and rigged it to flop. It was the perfect reason for them to say "this style of animation clearly isnt lucrative, we're putting it to bed"
Vincenzo Nova thank you. This makes me appreciate the amount of wasted effort in this film. Let us spread the word of treasure planet: Disney’s true masterpiece
I'm just pissed off Disney killed their 2D animation. It's even worse now with the live action remakes. They act as if they have something to improve on their original works, and sadly, I meet a bunch of people who say that they prefer it because "it's 'more adult.'" BS. Walt said that with animation, they "had worlds to conquer," worlds that didn't have the same artiststry in live action. So, if you think that animation is childish, and not for adults, listen. You're an idiot.
@@ClulssCrs3310 I'm glad that Japan has kept it alive and elevated the medium, but I'm sad that except for the occasional experiment like Klaus or Into The Spiderverse, the west doesn't seem very into being very creative with their animation style.
@@armchairrocketscientist4934 Because it’s tremendously expensive to have a hand drawn animated movie. Let alone the technology 90’s Disney used. Computer animation is leagues cheaper and required probably a ton less people to work on it as well. One of the main reasons traditional hand drawn animation was so big back then was because the computer side of it was still in its infancy. It wasn’t until the 2000’s that CGI, flash animation really took off and took presendce over traditional art.
Treasure Planet was the last movie i watched with my dad before he passed away from pancreatic cancer two years ago. He loved it. We both did. Your video essay is the reason we watched it. Thank you.
I actually had no idea Treasure Planet flopped this badly. Treasure Planet was one of my favorite movies growing up and i loved Jim. The kid me looked up at him and wanted to be him. I got into skateboarding because of Jim and his Solar Sailboard. To hear this childhood masterpiece of mine flopped is so depressing. And to hear it might have been because of Disney Corporate really ticks me off. Thanks for the video, BreadSword.
I remember going to my grandparents job site when i was 3 or 4 and asking a carpenter who worked for them try and help me make the rocket sail thing from the beginning out of scrap wood. 22 now and still my all time favorite Disney film.
@@miihoodw6925 thanks for your comment man, I've been trying to find out for years which pirate animation movie McDonalds made toys of and now I got the confirmation
Treasure Planet was going to be big or that's what they thought. I heard that not only was there going to be a sequel in the words but they were already writing screenplay for a T.V series. But because it failed at the box office they had to put the projects to the side. Also, they made a PS2 game that my brother and I had own. We never finished it. :(
My jaw dropped when you mentioned the part with the Disney commercial and it spoiling the whole movie. I can’t tel you how many times I’ve seen that happen with films and it goes to show how your marketing team can really screw over an entire project.
@caitlyncarvalho7637because everyone (mostly) knows who Sherlock Holmes is. Even if you dont, he is immortalized the saying. Treasure planet on the other hand is only really known by people from around the time it came out. Since there hasnt been a vastly successful and popular adaptatoon (besides this one) not enough people remember or ask for it. Or sinply just talk about it
I feel horrible for Ron Clements and John Musker, this is a movie they wanted, loved doing, and working on the most. I liked the movie and loved the characters and how the story went, for me personally is my favorite Disney movie. It completely bombed hard at the box office. Because of that, I feel extremely sympathetic for them and the movie.
And they would get screwed over their passion projects 2 more times. They wanted to make an Alfred Hitchcock homage from the perspective of a house cat. That ended up getting canceled because, as one of the execs oh so wisely said,"nobody wants to see a movie about a fat old director no one remembers". Then they tried to get a hand-drawn animated adaptation of Mort off the ground, but that was cancelled because A. The Terr Pratchett estate tried to sell Disney the rights to the whole Discworld series and B. The execs were "unsure about having Death as a Disney character". My boys started the Disney Renaissance. They deserve better than this, man.
@@opticalraven1935 How do you do? My name is Alex Morrison and I want to ask you about why Disney wanted Treasure Planet to fail in the first place. There must be a reason behind Treasure Planet's failure at the box office. It's great to talk to you, so please respond to me as soon as you can. Thanks for listening 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊.
Three passion projects John Musker and Ron Clements worked and tried to work on: One of their passion projects that got finished but failed at the box office and the other two movies that didn't see the light of day 😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔.
Imagine being super loyal to a company, giving them success after success, paving the way for their bright future, and all you ask for in return is to make _another movie for them,_ which is also a passion project you’ve dreamed of for years. And they’re basically like, “F*ck you.”
It's wild to me that RonJohn continue to stay with Disney even after they continously denied them of their passion project and then proceeded to turn Aladdin into whatever you can call the live action remake. Like, on one hand, kudos to you two for having that much patience, but on the other I feel like they'd have so much more creative liberties if they joined something like SPA Studios instead.
It's sad to say but Disney's been doing that since the 1970's :s people forget that fact and think it didn't happen until the 90's and or early 2000's. Neither case is true....The Black Cauldron is another example of it, and that one almost killed the company which just made them want to give their staff that chance even more. Cauldron was delayed over and over, they kept trying to get the staff who worked on it to do other movies barely into production, not even like half way in, hardly anything had been done on it before they wanted to effectively sabotage it. Treasure Planet isn't the first, and I bet frankly will not be the last time they do it. Now it's more a case of which concept will they do it do next. They will do it again they've done it for the last 40+ years already.
Not really.. they did give them 140 million for it. They just didn't give it the polish they normally would for business reasons. Like everyone else is saying. Sad.
It's one of my favorite movies I remember seeing trailers of this moving also amazed of the CGI this movie what's so fantastic I can't believe part of the Caribbean come out
Didn't see Treasure Planet till well into my twenties and I love it. Thankfully, Mom bought Atlantis for me and it ended up being one of my favorites when I got older.
This was SUCH a good review. I’m so freaking sad that treasure planet never had a sequel. This was my favorite movie as a kid, the visual aesthetic, music, and theme I was all obsessed with as a kid.
I think treasure planet deserves a lot more appreciation, but considering Disney’s history of terrible sequels, I’m almost glad it doesn’t have one. Like, I would love for it to have a sequel, but only if I know it would actually be a decent story continuation, and not just a big marketing scheme.
Ah, so Disney's biggest mistake wasn't the film itself. It was not giving a single damn about it and basically setting it up for failure. Seriously, one of my all time favorite Disney films.
I think the reason why they didn’t have a main love interest for the protagonist is because they already supplemented that relationship with the father-son like relationship he had with the cyborg.
Basically what he said in the video....Disney's biggest mistake was not giving this film the amount of attention it deserved despite the fact it was one of their best ones
Given the fact that the directors had to make 5 feature films before they could even bargain with the bigsuits to make this film, I absolutely believe you that the bigsuits sabotaged this film's release so they can have a reason to not make more films similar.
Every time another formulaic disney movie comes out, I listen to people go "AMAZING" and wonder what they see in it. I know that some people would say that the singing, happy endings, silly comic relief, random animal sidekicks, etc make disney what it is, but it usually annoys the heck out of me. :P
I'm going to watch this and Black Cauldron sometime this month (job and all that means I have to queue things I'm going to do). I'm all about checking out underrated films I never watched before.
I watched The Black Cauldron a while ago... it was pretty disappointing. Might be better to skip it and read the books, if you're interested in that story for whatever reason. Treasure Planet is worth watching though.
Treasure planet was released about a week or two after Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets, the second movie not the first one. Also a few weeks later the second movie of LoTR came out. Harry Potter - November 15th Treasure planet - November 27th LoTR: The Two Towers** - December 18th So positioned between 2 masive franchise films with minimal and bad PR it was set up to fail at the box office. **Edit: Misnamed the movie wrote "The Twin Towers" insted of "The Two Towers".
Well, that is a good way to kill your numbers. Come out between two major franchise sequels, with a giant book fanbase, one of which is loved by a large amount of adults and seniors, and one by tons of tweens. It's like, sticking a squirrel, albeit a awsome, beautiful, expensive to get squirrel, between a lion and a shark in a zoo.
Thinking back to the time ‘Treasure Planet’ was released, I can’t stop but to think it’s rarity in movie theaters. My father, who fell in love with the trailer of Jim surfing in his “glider”, tried to get us a ticket at our nearby theatre. Surprisingly, the place didn’t show ‘Treasure Planet’. Couple of days later, we found out that there was only ONE place that showed it (in Manhattan, though not sure of the exact place). I always thought to myself why this film, unlike majority of Disney movies was only shown in scarce numbers. It really comes to show how corporates and executives can control and sway the audience and critics alike, especially when the movie / product is not in the best interest of a company. I think if it was shown in majority of the theaters, it could have been a greater hit than it was before.
True. They intentionally doomed it. I only found most of my favourite movies, both animated and live-action, by finding them as VHS and DVDs in rental places of that kind or in stores. Treasure Planet was no exception there sadly..
Fascinating story, but one not that far removed from mine. I lived in Monaco at the time and desperately wanted to see it on its opening weekend. It was released in the only movie theatre in town/the country... but it was given the smallest screen of the theatre, since the two largest were being taken by Die Another Day and, especially, Harry Potter II. As such, I remember seeing this movie (among the first ones I saw alone, with Erin Bronkovich and Lilo and Stitch) in an almost empty theatre with the noises of the other two screens shaking the small, run-down screen where the movie was shown. Also, the story with your father falling in love with a trailer is a nice touch, and reminds me of my fathers downright infatuation with Gangs of New York after watching the first trailer back in December 2001.
After watching it countless times as a child I feel like it might have been to do with the moral of the story. How money isn't everything and it and greed can turn good people into bad people. They might have not liked that and didn't want a generation growing up being consious of their money, because that's something I learned from it. Considering all the other disney movies out at the time didn't have the same topics. Maybe they just didn't think kids would like it. Who knows.
There was also a really nice detail with Jim. Shadows around his eyes. He has them there the whole time, adding to his teenage bad boy kind of wibe, but whenever he opens up, or at the end he takes charge of things... they disappear and his face brightens. This movie is a masterpiece of animation, greatly written, great characters. When I first saw it, luckily for me our ads about the movie were much better and did not spoil the movie, I fell in love with it. The thought of sailing among stars in such a ship like RLS Legacy is just awesome. To see the stars, planets and so much more from deck of a beautiful ship instead of through window or monitor. Disney really carpet bombed themselves with sabotaging this movie. This could have become something great. I can already imagine a series where Jim takes on academy and under watchful eye of his 'aunt' Captain Amelia, learns what it means to be captain of a ship. Sometimes he fails, sometimes he succeeds, but never gives up. In the end he might reunite with SIlver. Now cadet of academy against a pirate, but in the end they do not let this ruin their friendship. And who knows, maybe Jim could find his father.
Definitely better than any of these modern Marvel Movies (although Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant Man were good, but not comparable). Way better than these cheap CGI movies they spew out on a regular basis nowadays.
fun fact: The Princess and the Frog, Disney's last 2D animation movie, was released against the last Harry Potter movie. Let that sink in. It was bound to flop..
29:28 to be absolutely fair, the movie itself reveals Silver is a villain very early into his introduction. I think the scene showing that he's secretly leading the pirate crew is only 15-something minutes after he is revealed. It is also hinted at immediately, since Jim was warned a cyborg was the one who wanted the map earlier in the movie, so as soon as the audience sees Silver is a cyborg they already suspect him.
This is a good point but I think that makes tha actual twist- when he turns his back on Jim, specifically- so much more powerful. We as the audience, and Jim himself, always knew Silver had the capacity to betray the crew, but no one suspected he would also betray Jim
@@SintanityThat is such a good point! I wondered why they chose to give it away so quickly but that actually makes a lot of sense bc it really did make the scene of him betraying Jim more shocking.
That song "I'm Still Here" montage scene got me through a rough time. It was always on because My mom bought the dvd and she would watch it almost every day. I think she Identified with Jim's mom Sarah and was hoping that the 4 of us kids would do something amazing to get out of the cycle of poverty... And I identified with Jim. Growing up without knowing where your father is, and having a rocky relationship with your stepdad while you try to improve yourself is extremely relatable. And yes, I'm saying that John Silver was Jim's de-facto stepdad.
This is similar to my story with this film. I grew up watching this during a rough time in my family and Jim was the only character in a sea of protagonists that I could identify with.
I have clinical depression, and feel like I won’t amount to anything because of it. As a child, I had trouble interacting with other people, and it’s still kind of difficult; I know it’s cliche and sappy to say, but because of that, that song speaks directly to my heart.
I had been avoiding this video for so long, no matter how many times it was recommended to me, cause I didn't wanna hear someone call one of my favourite movies a mistake... I was wrong, and I am so glad I was wrong. Thanks for giving Treasure Planet the praise it deserves ^-^
This will probably always be my favourite Disney movie, and I am still a little baffled that it was received relatively poorly. As a six-year-old boy, I was probably the perfect demographic for this movie, but even today, I find the hybrid Victorian-science fiction setting inspired and imaginative. The characters are well-realised (and in some respects more complex than those in the source material), it has a strong emotional core and it holds up as a beautifully animated film. Money well spent, as far as I'm concerned.
It wasn't received poorly, but rather sold poorly, those are two distinct differences. But yeah, this movie really sparked my love for adventure/scifi movies especially with how the movie handles it's worldbuilding and setting. Seriously, pirates on space? That's so damn imaginative when I'm sure all kids our age thought space and pirates were cool.
Not to simplify things, but I think the reason the movie flopped was simply because it was dated. Computer animation was all the rage and everybody wanted to go see Pixar movies. Treasure Planet just looked like ( animationally ) how every other Disney movie ever looked. You can talk about marketing, etc.. but I think it was just poor timing. No, not poor timing coming out at Christmas, poor timing that it did not come out 10 years earlier... you know, WHEN THEY FIRST WANTED TO MAKE THE MOVIE! PS.. I created a new word animiationally.. USE IT! Thnx!
Both treasure planet and Atlantis were my absolute favorites as a kid and are still in my top five.... Next to mad max: fury road. And I will personally fight anyone who says they are bad movies.
Treasure Planet is honestly one of the only animated movies I've ever seen that realistically portrays what it's like to be a teenager. I connected with this movie so much as a kid because not only was Jim himself relatable, but he was also flawed in all the right ways that speaks to kids because it's on their level. He had realistic issues, such as parental abandonment, which left him depressed; struggling to figure out who he was, who he wanted to be and where that left him in the grand scheme of life as a whole. I have always adored this movie, and this video, in my opinion, hit the nail on the head in regards to the criminally unjust way Disney set this masterpiece up for imminent failure. To you, good sir, I say thanks and have never subscribed to a channel faster than this one. Definitely looking forward to checking out your other content. :)
Yessss absolutely, i remember listening to the song "I'm still here" for the first time when i was a kid and watched this movie (which is a song i presume was written about jim) and i always got chills from it because i could really relate to the lyrics - "🎶 they can't tell me who to be, cause I'm not what they see 🎶" or " 🎶 you don't know me and I'll never be what you want me to be🎶" - i agree as a teenager i could really relate to it haha
Ami Bird Yep! I was already a HUGE fan of The Goo Goo Dolls as a kid, so when I heard that song, I immediately fell head over heels in love with it. The lyrics only make it that much better because we all know how that feels in some way, shape or form.
you should seriously watch tarzan , loosing parents is one of the most common themes among all animated movies ever created , 90% of disney movies use that
Such a shame that Disney set up this masterpiece of a film to fail. I enjoyed watching it as a child and enjoy watching it now as an adult. I really liked your video essay about how the film does certain things well, especially the significance of Jim's wardrobe changes throughout the movie, it was something I never thought of. Really nice video!!
I don't give a fuck about numerical digits, dollar signs, or Disney for that matter, this movie was a masterpiece and I am forever thankful that it was made.
This was one of my wife's favorite movie as a kid and I never heard of it. So she made me watch it a few years ago and I freaking loved it and was so confused as to why I never heard about it or why it was never touted as one of Disney's best films.
@caitlyncarvalho7637 my answer is yes. Loved both, but my first impression came from finnish dub. Finnish version of "I'll be here" gave me chills and still kinda does.
Definitely. I have long cleaned out most of my DVDs and passed them on since we seem to be headed in the direction of digital everything, but Treasure Planet is one of the few DVDs I refused to let go of. (=
Beautiful, beautiful film. One of the reasons I got into drawing. Should have gotten way more exposure, but I'm somewhat grateful that it didn't, so it wasn't ground into the dirt of pop culture like Frozen.
well disney as a whole didnt really want to make it, it was directors who wanted to make it, so they wouldnt support it because they as a company didnt want it, in base explaination, there is alot more to it
We can all agree that this movie is a underrated masterpiece. Even today looks better than some animated films. Its visuals aged pretty damn well.......... The characters, the soundtrack, the places..... Something i always aprecciate in a movie is the sense of adventure and in this one is unmatched imo. One of my favorite movies of all time.
@@doctordeath2419 It's not a clickbait, it's the pov of Disney on the movie. They literally want everyone to forget about it. The public loves it, however, that's why it was their biggest mistaken
I cant believe I just discovered this film but I watched it and to date it's the only movie I've seen where a main character's father just...left instead of dying or something. That little detail is so good because more kids can relate to a father leaving than a father dying, I'm sure. Also my father was pretty similar and I remember feeling exactly like how Jim was when he saw his father leave. This just makes the movie even better to me.
THIS is a movie they should be remaking in live action, not classics that already did well, but the underrated gems that never got their due first time round.

It is quite a shame traditional animation basically died out in the west. I guess my love for that kind of style is one of the reasons I turned to anime.
Same here. And Treasure Planet and Atlantis, two of my favorite Disney animated films, are also probably the two that fit in with anime most easily, due to their dynamic animation and awesome storylines.

I usually really dislike Disney sequels (not all of them, but most of them are crap). But i would totally watch a sequel to Treasure Planet done right. And seeing the concept arts and what the sequel was going to be about, i really wish it was actually made.
+Bullwon The Atlantis sequel wasn't a true sequel. DIsney had planned to roll out an animated series to follow the success of the movie. They created a few episodes, but eventually canned the idea. Then, they stitched the three together, and released them on DVD as a sequel in an effort to recoup some of the costs. (That's why it feels like 3 disjointed segments with barely a thing connecting them, it is.) That's also how Beauty and the Beast 2 happened. Lucky shows like The Little Mermaid and Hercules got green-lit, those "movie sequels" would also likely have been trash.
I don't care what anybody says. Treasure planet has been my childhood favorite film. I remember grabbing a random VHS tape from the stack inside the Tupperware my mom got from a yard sale. The song "I'm still here." Is nostalgic because I would replay that scene over and over again.
I came to this video expecting to be angered by someone who "clearly didn't like Treasure Planet, one of my favorite Disney films, and doesn't know what they're talking about because they're ranting about it being a mistake." I expected to hate the video and be upset with you (and your team if you have one) for creating it. But, what I got was not a scathing review. Instead, I got a well-researched, tenderly narrated video talking about the history and events surrounding a film that I enjoyed so much when I was younger and still have fond memories of today. Thank you for creating this and thank you for bringing it to light. Even though it may be a conspiracy, it's good to know that others also enjoyed this lesser-known film.
You can tell by how long the video was that that wasn't going to be the case, or the title wouldve said, Why, I hate treasure planet, Context clues, people, context clues
I really think that this movie having Jim's father just walking out on the family was more emotional than any parent dying in other Disney films. It's one thing when a parent dies either from a freak accident or self sacrifice, but it's something else entirely when a parent just up and leaves you because they wanted something more.
It's also important to note the point in Jim's life his father left him like Breadsword is mentioning; he left the family when Jim was a pre-teen and close to hitting puberty, which is the confusing stage in life where you don't know if you're a child or not, what identity you have, how your future is looking, and why you're feeling so strange inside (hormones). Since his father left him during that age, then Jim both feels that he apparently wasn't good enough for his own father, but also ended up never having a male role model whom probably could explain to him how it's like for boys his age growing up (his mother could possibly explain it, but not accurately). All this results in him feeling like he has no future and is just trapped in a strange and inexplicable male teen world.
It didn't help the fact that he felt alone and an outcast his whole life. He felt unwanted by everyone. In a deleted scene,Jim was trying to help an alien kid fix his scooter but the dad comes in and basically shoos him away. Jim gets to see another kid spending time with his dad while he's left to his own devices.
Not to mention having a parent leaving you is a more common occurrence for kids in the early and mid 2000s thus being more relatable than let's say a parent who died fighting off a mutant werewolf
It's 2019 and I still love this movie. I miss when animators used to be more experimental with their movie ideas. I thought that the mix of the alternate future and the 18th century was so unique. Like seriously, I miss the imagination that comes in animation.
@@dsizzle7859 Yeah people generally seem to consider everything after Shakespeare and before 1920 "Victorian." It's annoying but tolerable as a one off, but he kept saying it and seemed like a lapse in basic research in an otherwise impeccably researched video.
I remember being *SO EXCITED* for this movie! So much so, I almost *forgot* Harry Potter (I dont remeber going to see it). But, I remember when I went to see Treasure Planet. I took my best friend at the time. There was a little boy sitting next to us who had probably seen it 12 times by the time we sat down. He quoted the whole movie, pop songs and all! The three of us shared pop corn, and we theater hopped into the next showing because he was so enthusiastic about watching it again. It was a *GREAT* experience of sci-fi, high fantasy, and swashbuckling! I miss the thrill of watching new features in a theater.
Got into an actual screaming fight with my ex about how amazing this movie is. His roommate and best friend took my side. Ex said, “Fine! We’ll go find it and watch it.” I dug it out of my movie chest and told him, “If a movie is bad, I will talk through it. If it’s good, you won’t hear a peep.” To this day, it’s the only movie I sat through in silence for. …that he knows of. But he’s an idiot and out of my life. (He threw away my movie chest)
I gotta admit, knowing there was a second one set up that never saw the light of day is a punch strait to the feels. This was my favorite movie growing up...
Still one of my favourite videos on the internet. Like dude it's so phenomenal, just the editing and the voice over and the amount of content that's just squeezed from this movies history is amazing. Truly a time flyer. Thank you
DartLuke - Only in game though. I'd rather sit back , relax and just marvel at those Victorian-Steam-Punked style technologies. Graphics positioned in deep canvas technique with virtual sets. ah gonna watch again later the movie. lol
This is one of my favorite Disney movies, when it came out I was absolutely enthralled with it being the strange little girl who loved astronomy and space and pirates. I loved the strong female captain and I loved jim and the cyborg - all amazing characters. The story has perfect pacing, the visuals are unique and imaginative and the story though it’s classic treasure hunting adventure is also so much more than that. About leaning into your talents and getting that long needed guidance from a parent/father figure who tells you to reach for the stars because they know you can do it. Not to mention all of the music was contemporary, rather than classical like so many other scores of Disney films. It will always have a special place in my heart. Not to mention I’m still obsessed with pirates and space and astronomy
Honestly, when I first saw the title, I was worried you'd rip into one of my favorite all-time animated movies, but I was genuinely surprised to see you give it so much praise (of which it is highly deserving, of course.)
I agree. I was just thinking this. Disney owes it to the public to commit to this movie. They somehow thought Home On The Range was worth its time to produce... That movie was retarded. How could some big wig at Disney not see that this was a good film and recognize its potential?
i'm gonna disagree with you here. Zootopia did not have better characters. There are a total of...2 maybe 3 characters in Zootopia that have an actual backstory (i could be wrong its been awhile since i've seen it). treasure planet has, the mom, Jim, the proffessor, silver, and Ben. all of which have much more traumatic, realistic, and relatable stories.
Treasure Planet will always have a very solid and tender place in my heart. i grew up as a kid rewatching that movie DOZENS of times on end and i never got sick of it. especially on road trips, man those were the best. Treasure Planet was not only a part of my childhood nostalgia, but it truly did teach me a ton of things about life and i managed to memorize multiple phrases and lines from the movie itself and i think about it all the time. this movie means more to me than any other disney movie ive ever seen (even Princess and the Frog which is a strong second favorite). i will always recommend this movie to others
I'm not gonna fucking lie...learning about what Disney did to this movie and learning why not a lot of people even know about this movie made me tear up. It's really depressing to see such an amazing masterpiece of a film not only fail but get it's future crushed all in the very first blow. This video deep-rooted my love for this film so, fantastic job on this.
I'll be honest, I saw the video title and i thought it was gonna be about how bad Treasure Planet was and boy was i taken on a whole different field trip
These kinds of videos are a dime a dozen and they're always the same. Don't get me wrong, this is a GREAT video. But what I mean is that there are tons of 20+ minute videos with clickbait-y titles that talk about some forgotten shows/movies and shed positive light on them, for people who never even saw them or for people who had very faint memories. Again, this is not a complaint. Just saying that these kinds of videos are very popular nowadays and when reading the title I just knew what it's content and tone would be.
I feel like this is one of disney’s movies that has themes and darkness for older audiences, yet has off the self comic relief, happy ending parties, needless exposition etc. that are so obviously aimed for children that it becomes confusing who the target audience is. Sometimes studios think they can take the easy road with animation movies since children eat almost everything but they forget that people who buy the tickets are teens and adults. I love this movie though.
I honestly feel bad for Ron Clements and John Musker. They fought for so long (and even made movies they didn't wanted to make) to finally make the Disney movie they always wanted to make. The result of their dream project? A huge financial failure that became a forgotten Disney movie. :(
its not forgotten, if the right people give other people the chance to see it. A lot of what happens now days is taken too fast, sometimes taking life slower means you will not be bored as much.
financial failure? yes. but not forgotten. Being a movie nerd with a girlfriend often too busy to sit down and really immerse herself in a movie who instead goes for more shallow, mildly entertaining flicks more often than not, I already know what the next movie is going to be that I'm gonna watch with my GF.
i feel like their usage of traditional animation and digital 3D animation mirrors the contrast between Victorian and Sci-fi perfectly. It wouldn't have looked as compelling and amazing if it had only been one animation stile, it wouldn't have been fitting to use two stiles for one genre. These combinations made it work as well as it did and that's genius.
I'd like to shoutout the lack of a romance narrative as well. With the plot solely focusing on fulfilling his dream and making his mother happy, it's so much cleaner than if they would have tried to work in a girl to try to complicate stuff. A fantastic choice, and just straight up refreshing. EDIT: Hooooooooooooly shit that ad is so bad. EVERYTHING is spoiled.
I agree, I've seen too many movies where they've forced a romantic interest in there just to have it there when really the movie could've done just as well or even better without it. Treasure Planet is definitely the kind of movie that would've been dragged down if they'd put a romantic interest in there so I'm so glad they didn't.
Honestly, one of the best movie, but sadly one of the most underrated... And what I like about these older films is that you could see that they put a damn ton of passion in them. Huge respect to the crew whoever made this film!
Funnel Cake yes and my opinion is that your opinion is wrong. But hey guess what? It's all subjective because they are opinions! So we're all talking circles and arguing over nothing.
Being born in 2001, it is only now that I got to see the full movie and I regret not being able to watch it sooner. I felt each emotion the characters went through, especially when Jim felt betrayed. It is unique in terms of storytelling and animation. Like WOW the animation is so beautiful for something in the early 2000s. Its a shame it wasn't as advertised as it is.
I loved this movie so much as a kid and always thought it was a gem. I didn't even know it was a failure in any sort of way and honestly it saddens me to think about it that way. I remember watching this on VHS again and again which probably makes it my most watched childhood movie but I never truly appreciated it until my late teens. It was a Disney movie that catered less to fantasies of a prince or princess and more to characters that I could relate to and even sympathize with. If there was one thing I could change about this movie it'd be how well it was received.
damn i rewatched this movie like 100 times when i was at my gradma's, we also had it on VHS and now i show it to my little cousin and still enjoy it. there is no doubt in my mind that for me this and the iron giant were the masterpieces of my childhood
Jim was when I was little and still is such a relatable character to me. Rewatching this film makes me wonder if it subconsciously molded me as a person despite the last time I saw this film being when I was like 6. Jim feeling like his life is hopeless and despite trying his best always ending up making everyone think less of him is something that resonates with me now far more than it did when I was little, and it did then too. I always loved this movie growing up, and it has remained one of my favorites to this day, even though it's been about 14 years since my last viewing
I remember 7 year old me seeing the ads back in 2002 but I never got to see it until finally recently. Back when it came out, I chose Harry Potter and Santa Clause 2 instead. And I did like them as well
maybe hecules would be more popular if they used the right goddamn name. I like the first reich and all but their version of greek mythology is horriblee
'Treasure Planet' is a masterpiece. What bothers me, is that Disney seems to forget that not every one of their movies was a classic right out of the gate. 'Fantasia', 'Cinderella', 'Lady and the Tramp' all underperformed in their initial release. They have since become legendary and well-loved through numerous re-releases in theaters, new merchandising every few years and attractions in their theme parks. That's why younger children know about the timeless cinematic treats. 'Treasure Planet' (and 'Atlantis') flopped on its initial release, and Disney should have pushed said movies more into the conciousness of new(er) generations. 'Treasure Planet' could have used a small marketing blitz in 2005, or 2008, or 2012 for its tenth anniversary. Make kids aware of 'lost' movies. Do something with your unloved properties. Make new merchandising available in your parks. It's really quite simple. A classic can only become a classic once it's treated and revered like one.
Disney intentionally flopped this movie. Managers in Disney wanted it to crash and burn. Some people in the leadership wanted to axe the traditional animation studio, but not everyone in the company was on board with that. So it was sabotaged trough the timing and bad marketing.
Honestly for what it is I’m glad that the movie was rigged for failure instead of just failing. When I first heard this movie didn’t do well I was absolutely baffled because it has made its way to number one spot in Disney movies for me. To hear that it was meant to be makes me feel a bit better because I know that it had the potential to become a defining film for Disney. It’s still so tragic that more people don’t know about it, but I guess it’ll make it even more special to certain individuals knowing that it is like a hidden masterpiece. And at the very least I’m glad that the movie ended on a non cliffhanger despite having planned sequels, because I know of several great series that were cancelled right on major cliffhangers leaving this empty feeling of wanting more.
I just watched this movie for the first time because of this review I came upon randomly and another review where I heard it was mentioned as biggest Disney flop, so my curiosity (thankfully) got the better of me. I am crying, this might be the best Disney movie I have ever watched. The plot is finally focusing on a protagonist without a love interest with both parents alive, but no father figure, the plot is so complex and relateable to many, and Morph might be the only ''animal'' sidekick that actually NEVER annoyed me, and he is the cutest one too. ALL the characters were so lovable, I can't... Them allowing it to flop is just..... I can't, this is a masterpiece of animation, story, music.... Everything is so good, I am in tears that this was allowed to die. Just cruel.
This movie deserves to be re-release, this has been shown ahead of time and only our generation can relate to this story now. If this has been released to this day this might have been the best movie of disney.
tennisobsessed25 One reason as to why I watch anime... Made in Abyss is my Go-to recommendation at the moment and it might fit as a recommendation for Treasure planet especially... I don't think it's quite as good as treasure planet though (Which is, by the way, still probably my favourite or second-favourite piece of animation ever, only second to Madoka Magica). But: Made in Abyss isn't comparable in terms of theme. This might be a slight spoiler, but: It's NOTHING for children. Everything up until episode 9 might be, but send all children present to bed when you start Episode 10, because... well... Nah, I won't say anything.
I don't recommend Madoka Magica to Anime-Newcomers because of its deconstruction of tropes which you should at least know about going into the anime. Without that, you'll only get half the experience and a damn good soundtrack.
Coming back to this video now, it’s kind of remarkable how history is repeating itself. Audiences didn’t want to see Treasure Planet in theaters because they caught on to Disney’s dvd release schedule and now Disney is having the EXACT same problem with streaming.
@@MKMMXfable Well actually, they did quit when their proposed project, Fraidy Cat, got cancelled all because it was considered "unmarketable", that's when they resigned. But John Lasseter convinced them to come back to do the Princess and the Frog and they did.
I have to laugh at most of their live actions, Lion King in particular....since that movie was 99% CGI. There was no live action in the first place, calling it such was a front faced lie that Disney refuses to own up to. Live Action can have CGI, Lord of the Rings has it in droves, but the difference is oh idk....theres LIVE ACTION. Several of Disney's live actions have little to none at all yet still get the label.....the fact they're being allowed to become the monopoly they are is disgusting....the fact they've been allowed to for the last near 15 YEARS just shows how little they actually care anymore. People can hate on EA and such companies all day. Disney has them beat and there is no way you can change my mind on that fact :| This video came out before they fired the 2d staff that were left to do screen projections. They're ALL gone now, on top of the mess of who was also recently fired from their company. Just makes me glad I'm not in the US anymore....Disney in theory shouldn't be able to do what they're doing yet they are.....and it's getting much...MUCH worse.
My wife and I watched it on our first date, and we loved it. Thanks for this wonderful nostalgic feeling I will have to surprise my wife with this for a movie night soon.
Hmmmmmmm 1. Immense effort 2. Good editing 3. Very good commentary 4. A lot of research in video 5. Charismatic commentator How does this channel not have at least a million subscribers? Oh right ... Only two videos ...
Holy tits, this is his second video? That's very impressive, especially when it was done so well. Wasn't boring, kept me informed, and interested in his video. Really hope this guy does more.
@Miss Lady Shana Tbh though it seems like the plot of the sequel was gonna be... not the best. Very much along the lines of "well time to give our main character a rival who is also a love interest and go back on a lot of the themes of the original"
2D animation is better than 3D animation in my opinion. I value how much more “artistic” it looks, and it’s a shame that you don’t see it on the big screen anymore.
I think they're both great and different in their own respects. The problem, in my opinion, is when people see 3D animation as an upgrade to 2D animation.

This era of Disney is filled with underrated films
Emperors new groove
Atlantis the lost Empire
Treasure planet
I loved those movies as I kid
I grew up with them in my early childhood
Sorry. it's late and I become more caviling the later it gets but I wanted it off my shoulders :P
Have a great day, and continue to enjoy these movies :)
These are actually my favorite childhood movies! So glad that other people love them too
Dont forget Dinosaur
How about Sinbad
Treasure Planet was a legit steampunk space opera and and underrated masterpiece
I KNOW!!!
Facts
I wouldn’t say masterpiece, but is still underrated
@@JV-mm2yf Yeah, even as a die-hard Treasure Planet fan, I gotta admit, it has its flaws mainly pacing.
It has its flaws but it's memorable and I like it for that
What I love about Treasure Planet/Island is that Long John Silver is the most unique "villain"/antihero ever conceived. He's a ruthless pirate, yet has a soft spot.
this! amazingly well written character
really rare
I know this comment is over a year old at the time I'm replying but... I literally just saw the movie last night for the first time and I totally agree. I think instead of "villain" I'd just describe him as an antagonist kind of antihero? Like... maybe he's not necessarily a "villain" but he does butt heads with Jim.
John Silver's character development throughout the film makes me so soft I cannot believe I didn't know about this movie for so long
@@smittywerbenjagermanjensen7989 He is a villain.
You'd like him in Black Sails too.
So happy I grew up with this movie. This and "Atlantis" are highly underrated. They were adventurous and exciting.
Facts! I was obsessed with those when I was a kid
The sequel to the Atlantis animation was 🤔
@@oioioioi992 Wasn't aware there was a sequel to Atlantis...
@@Neb_Raska well don't watch it. The animation sucks. :/
Comment is appreciated. Really enjoyed their work
this is everything wrong with the world
disney is complete garbage and thank you for the comment so I can further understand the reasons I should dislike their work
that's make sense, anime mostly mix between 2D and 3D, no problemo
I'm just pissed off Disney killed their 2D animation.
It's even worse now with the live action remakes. They act as if they have something to improve on their original works, and sadly, I meet a bunch of people who say that they prefer it because "it's 'more adult.'"
BS. Walt said that with animation, they "had worlds to conquer," worlds that didn't have the same artiststry in live action.
So, if you think that animation is childish, and not for adults, listen.
You're an idiot.
Just look to anime, it has a lot to explore
@@ClulssCrs3310 I'm glad that Japan has kept it alive and elevated the medium, but I'm sad that except for the occasional experiment like Klaus or Into The Spiderverse, the west doesn't seem very into being very creative with their animation style.
You summed it up pretty well
@@armchairrocketscientist4934 Because it’s tremendously expensive to have a hand drawn animated movie.
I agree
It was the marketing. Obviously Disney SAT on this one.
Both Treasure planet and Atlantis where my favorites
same here, i started skating and snowboarding becuse of the movie! the guy looked fly as hell shredding through that factory!
There aren’t too many films I grew up with that influenced who I am today but this film definitely gave me childhood dreams

IRUNASSAULT I only watched cuz we owned it along with a small collection of others
I remember going to my grandparents job site when i was 3 or 4 and asking a carpenter who worked for them try and help me make the rocket sail thing from the beginning out of scrap wood. 22 now and still my all time favorite Disney film.

Something about this movie mesmerized me
I never knew there was a planned sequel, now I'm even more depressed.
The aesthetic and universe is so GODDAMN beautiful and I'm so sad they took it behind the shed and put it down.
while it is disappointing, the fact the original exists should make you feel happy :D
Same.
It's a damn shame.
Let's hope that in Disney plus more people will be able to see it
RUMORS it could have live action treatment
Disney wanted Treasure Planet to fail.
@@opticalraven1935 How do you do? My name is Alex Morrison and I want to ask you about why Disney wanted Treasure Planet to fail in the first place. Three passion projects John Musker and Ron Clements worked and tried to work on: One of their passion projects that got finished but failed at the box office and the other two movies that didn't see the light of day 😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔😔.
@@lexiconmorrison7902 he's stating what the video essay says at the end
Imagine being super loyal to a company, giving them success after success, paving the way for their bright future, and all you ask for in return is to make _another movie for them,_ which is also a passion project you’ve dreamed of for years.
And they’re basically like, “F*ck you.”
At least after that they had their revenge since they created dreamworks
It's wild to me that RonJohn continue to stay with Disney even after they continously denied them of their passion project and then proceeded to turn Aladdin into whatever you can call the live action remake. Like, on one hand, kudos to you two for having that much patience, but on the other I feel like they'd have so much more creative liberties if they joined something like SPA Studios instead.
Welcome to large corporations. Thank you for your service now fuck off and keep doing stuff.
Sad.
Jokes on Disney cause me and literally everyone around my age that I know loves Treasure Planet and Atlantis the Lost Empire.

Ah, so Disney's biggest mistake wasn't the film itself. It was not giving a single damn about it and basically setting it up for failure.
Seriously, one of my all time favorite Disney films.
Seen it only once and always wanted to see it again. I had a great time with this movie. It is so different to every other disney movie.
My favorite as well
i was about to be super pissed at this guy because treasure planet is fucking lit

It's one of my favorite movies that I ever watched.
What I like about the movie there was no love interest at all which is common in Disney movies
Except for the doctor and the captain :P
Gotta have that romance somewhere I guess, though at least it’s not forced onto the main character yeah
I think the reason why they didn’t have a main love interest for the protagonist is because they already supplemented that relationship with the father-son like relationship he had with the cyborg.
They had it planned for the sequel that never saw the light of day.
I love it when movies don't have a love interest. It's the most shoe-horned kind of sub-plot of all time.
Instead it was a heck of a bromance between master and student
Disney’s biggest mistake?
More like Disney’s biggest missed opportunity
Ikr
I know that's right.
YES
pamela lejeune it’s there biggest mistake, because they missed a great opportunity
This movies a formula break. It doesn’t do anything a Disney movie should and I honestly think that’s really cool
This movie was my childhood
This is my favorite Disney movie of all time
Every time another formulaic disney movie comes out, I listen to people go "AMAZING" and wonder what they see in it.
Harry Potter - November 15th
Treasure planet - November 27th
LoTR: The Two Towers** - December 18th
So positioned between 2 masive franchise films with minimal and bad PR it was set up to fail at the box office.
**Edit: Misnamed the movie wrote "The Twin Towers" insted of "The Two Towers".
Astral43 YOOO HOW DID I FUCK THAT UP LMAO I KNEW I MIXED SOMETHING UP IN THE SCRIPT
*Two Towers
Well, that is a good way to kill your numbers. Come out between two major franchise sequels, with a giant book fanbase, one of which is loved by a large amount of adults and seniors, and one by tons of tweens. It's like, sticking a squirrel, albeit a awsome, beautiful, expensive to get squirrel, between a lion and a shark in a zoo.
Fun Fact: The Led Zeppelin song "The Battle of Evermore" has multiple references to LoTR
Astral43 oh! Why did they do that?!😱
Thinking back to the time ‘Treasure Planet’ was released, I can’t stop but to think it’s rarity in movie theaters.
I did watch it in theaters normally but I doubt they cared about sinking the film internationally which just shows how intentional their actions were.
Who knows.
So that's why it bombed. Damn disney
Can't be, Mr. Hawkins is just like Mr. Ketchum.
No. The story is enough as it is. We don’t need Disney ruining another franchise.
@@SnailHatan Maybe now, but back then we'd have had something decent, and maybe a series animated on the Disney Channel.

Second Harry Potter film, actually.

@@SintanityThis, we all knew he was a pirate and capable of pulling a sunt like that, but not to Jim ...not to Jim.
And yes, I'm saying that John Silver was Jim's de-facto stepdad.
amazing
This is similar to my story with this film. I grew up watching this during a rough time in my family and Jim was the only character in a sea of protagonists that I could identify with.
I have clinical depression, and feel like I won’t amount to anything because of it. As a child, I had trouble interacting with other people, and it’s still kind of difficult; I know it’s cliche and sappy to say, but because of that, that song speaks directly to my heart.
That scene where Jim’s dad leaves always breaks my heart
John was most definitely his defaco step dad I refuse to believe anyone who says otherwise

That transition though. Even after watching this movie over 50 times, it still gives me chills of excitement.
nonstopjoliver yayyyayyyqyyyyyy
GANDALF!!!
Kawaii MoeGirl huhhh??? Go away.
USE IT! Thnx!

Both treasure planet and Atlantis were severely underrated
Both always remind me of Titan AE.
Both treasure planet and Atlantis were my absolute favorites as a kid and are still in my top five.... Next to mad max: fury road. And I will personally fight anyone who says they are bad movies.
I loved Treasure planet when I was a kid. I still love it today
YES! I loved Titan AE. And, a bit of a nod to "Heavy Metal" if it was done for a younger audience.
both were my favorite movies when i grew up! totally underrated!
Frisk The Fabulous Oh wait.
Slynchthepuppy I'm confused. Lol. Did you want to say something?
Yessss absolutely, i remember listening to the song "I'm still here" for the first time when i was a kid and watched this movie (which is a song i presume was written about jim) and i always got chills from it because i could really relate to the lyrics -
"🎶 they can't tell me who to be, cause I'm not what they see 🎶" or
" 🎶 you don't know me and I'll never be what you want me to be🎶" - i agree as a teenager i could really relate to it haha

To be honest Treasure Planet is one of my favorite Disney movies. It sucks that Disney would market something that awesome so poorly
It Sucked market wise because it is not a Princess story.

It's the fault of the uploader for having such an clickbait title in the first place.

I cant believe I just discovered this film but I watched it and to date it's the only movie I've seen where a main character's father just...left instead of dying or something. I usually really dislike Disney sequels (not all of them, but most of them are crap). But i would totally watch a sequel to Treasure Planet done right. And seeing the concept arts and what the sequel was going to be about, i really wish it was actually made.
The prospect of Willem Dafoe playing a lead antagonist in an animated scifi story is enough to sell me on it. This is really disappointing.
You're not a normal guy! You're a ring-bearer!
A good example of this is how fucking awful Atlantis' sequel ended up being.
Maybe with a bit more of a police/mystery story than adventure but it was already set to be when Jim is working as a cadet
I don't care what anybody says. Treasure planet has been my childhood favorite film. I remember grabbing a random VHS tape from the stack inside the Tupperware my mom got from a yard sale. The song "I'm still here." Is nostalgic because I would replay that scene over and over again.
You do care.

Treasure Planet deserves to become a cult film, like Howard The Duck, and The Evil Dead films did.
You can tell by how long the video was that that wasn't going to be the case, or the title wouldve said, Why, I hate treasure planet, Context clues, people, context clues
Same, and I'm glad I watched it.
same here... it took me weeks until I gave in to watch it was absolutely worth it

*18th century
@@Zarastro54 Thanks for the fix. The summary of the movie said 19th century.
@@dsizzle7859 Yeah people generally seem to consider everything after Shakespeare and before 1920 "Victorian." It's annoying but tolerable as a one off, but he kept saying it and seemed like a lapse in basic research in an otherwise impeccably researched video.

I agree

This is so sad. This movie is so good. I'm 23 now, and this is STILL one of my favorite movies.
100% same
Honestly, when I first saw the title, I was worried you'd rip into one of my favorite all-time animated movies, but I was genuinely surprised to see you give it so much praise (of which it is highly deserving, of course.)
I personally wouldn't mind him completely tearing it apart. I like seeing different perspective on the things I like.
Id pay extra to see a sequel, I honestly believe treasure planet had the most in-depth story and relatable character of any Disney movie.
I agree. I was just thinking this. Disney owes it to the public to commit to this movie. They somehow thought Home On The Range was worth its time to produce... That movie was retarded.
How could some big wig at Disney not see that this was a good film and recognize its potential?
Zootopia? 100% treasure planet had the most in-depth story and relatable character of any Disney movie until maybe Zootpia
i'm gonna disagree with you here. Zootopia did not have better characters. There are a total of...2 maybe 3 characters in Zootopia that have an actual backstory (i could be wrong its been awhile since i've seen it). treasure planet has, the mom, Jim, the proffessor, silver, and Ben. all of which have much more traumatic, realistic, and relatable stories.
chris armer give us the sequel disney!!
I love this movie though.
same here Lol
I enjoyed this twist, and it hasn't shaken my love of the movie.

I honestly feel bad for Ron Clements and John Musker. They fought for so long (and even made movies they didn't wanted to make) to finally make the Disney movie they always wanted to make. The result of their dream project? A huge financial failure that became a forgotten Disney movie. :(
Yea, that sucked. BUT! Win or lose, at least they got to make their movie. :)
Several great movies by them, actually. All of them released against bigger titles.
its not forgotten, if the right people give other people the chance to see it. A lot of what happens now days is taken too fast, sometimes taking life slower means you will not be bored as much.
A normal Guy That's true. Some projects don't even go into fruition.
financial failure? yes. but not forgotten.
Treasure Planet is definitely the kind of movie that would've been dragged down if they'd put a romantic interest in there so I'm so glad they didn't.
there's some wonderful platonic love throughout the film and it more than substitutes for it {3
He didn't have a love interest in the book this was based on. I guess they wanted to be faithful to the source material which I appreciate
That stupid floating pink thing wrecked it for me. It was clearly jammed in there for the toddler market.
Adding romance to everything is bland.
Honestly, one of the best movie, but sadly one of the most underrated...
And what I like about these older films is that you could see that they put a damn ton of passion in them.
Huge respect to the crew whoever made this film!
It's story hit home, though set in animation the story seems to be for an older or more mature audience. Great film!
I watched it when I was a little kid and got inspired about the universe :D (loved it) and still got the DVD to this day.
Rest in peace, Treasure Planet. You are, and always will be, my favourite Disney film ever released.
Robin Blend umm, it's good. Very underrated. But best Disney film ever? Yeah I don't think so.
Mikes vlogs ever heard about a little thing called an opinion?
Funnel Cake yes and my opinion is that your opinion is wrong.
But hey guess what? It's all subjective because they are opinions! So we're all talking circles and arguing over nothing.
Robin Blend fox and the hound is also amazing
holy fuck i think i just got autism from your reply
A pledge to edge yeah this kinda makes me afraid to rewatch it. Havent seen it in 12 years or so
damn i rewatched this movie like 100 times when i was at my gradma's, we also had it on VHS and now i show it to my little cousin and still enjoy it. there is no doubt in my mind that for me this and the iron giant were the masterpieces of my childhood
I have a big love for it in my heart since I was little
I read this really emotional response that I could relate to and feel for. Then I read your name and I kinda chuckled..
so underrated it hurts
It's everything but underrated, everyone i know who's seen it freaking loves it.
The problem is it's so unpopular it hurts.
Incredible video essay! I like this movie as well but it's unpopular and criminally underrated.
So bad that they are space pirates?
Watch it. It's phenomenal.
Marcus Aurelius i made the 666th like... But i agree
This is my favorite Disney film of all time and the only good memory I have of my dad
I agree
Jim was when I was little and still is such a relatable character to me. Rewatching this film makes me wonder if it subconsciously molded me as a person despite the last time I saw this film being when I was like 6. Jim feeling like his life is hopeless and despite trying his best always ending up making everyone think less of him is something that resonates with me now far more than it did when I was little, and it did then too. I always loved this movie growing up, and it has remained one of my favorites to this day, even though it's been about 14 years since my last viewing
Best disney film ever made. Light-years ahead of it's time. True masterpiece.
This is SO true
I just saw the movie for the first time and It is amazing
@@violetthebookcat7457 same dude
I remember 7 year old me seeing the ads back in 2002 but I never got to see it until finally recently.
Back when it came out, I chose Harry Potter and Santa Clause 2 instead. And I did like them as well
Lion King is the best
It hurts me how underrated this film is. Along with Hercules
maybe hecules would be more popular if they used the right goddamn name. I like the first reich and all but their version of greek mythology is horriblee
Exactly
Honey you mean hunkules
lmaooooo you win!!
HONEY YOU MEAN HUNKULES
Disney is the father that abandoned Jim.
ABAHAHHAHAHHAAHHAHAAHAH FUCKING QUOTEDDDDDD
Brendan O'Brien man fucking true hahahah
Brendan O'Brien this
Ouch. Pretty harsh of you disney...
Oh my God
Just cruel.
I wouldn't call Morph an animal sidekick. Just an alien one.
I completely and fully agree with you
THANK U! my man's just wanna make it in life, nun wrong with that
In Breve, Merida dont have a love interest either
This movie deserves to be re-release, this has been shown ahead of time and only our generation can relate to this story now. If this has been released to this day this might have been the best movie of disney.
THERE WAS SUPPOSE TO BE A SEQUEL?!?!?! Well, this breaks my heart....I miss the old animation.
tennisobsessed25 One reason as to why I watch anime...
Without that, you'll only get half the experience and a damn good soundtrack.
i recomend samurai champloo
Oh no you don't.
watch redline instead
Coming back to this video now, it’s kind of remarkable how history is repeating itself. Audiences didn’t want to see Treasure Planet in theaters because they caught on to Disney’s dvd release schedule and now Disney is having the EXACT same problem with streaming.
After Disney unjustly allowed their dream project to die like this, I'm surprised Musker and Clements didn't quit. I would have been furious.
John Musker retired last year. Ron Clements is still working for Disney.
@@1992disney They probably have contracts with Disney to work. so they couldn't have quite. I know i Would have quite when that happen.
@@MKMMXfable Well actually, they did quit when their proposed project, Fraidy Cat, got cancelled all because it was considered "unmarketable", that's when they resigned. But John Lasseter convinced them to come back to do the Princess and the Frog and they did.
@@1992disney wow, I didn't know that. that is interesting.
@@MKMMXfable Now you do.
I would take a sequel to this over another live action remake.
They’ll never remake a movie that did this badly at the box office.
yep. I thought this movie was pretty mediocre but even still its a thousand times better then all the soulless live action films we hv now
Live action sequel?
No sequels. We all know where that road leads to.
Treasure Planet - Disney's Hidden Masterpiece
together with Atlantis: the lost Empire
It's a Disney “treasure” if you want ;)
Treasure planet - The diamond in the rough
My hidden masterpiece is Brother Bear
Treasure Planet, I will always love you.
Been watching this video for years, thank you for making it
My wife and I watched it on our first date, and we loved it. Thanks for this wonderful nostalgic feeling I will have to surprise my wife with this for a movie night soon.
@Conan R he's talking about the movie night, relax dude

How does this channel not have at least a million subscribers?
Oh right ... Only two videos ...
That's astounding that this video has gotten so much traction with that. dang dudes.
True, Its very impressive. I'm hoping BREADSWORD will feel more motivated now that he has all these new fans.
Holy tits, this is his second video? That's very impressive, especially when it was done so well. Wasn't boring, kept me informed, and interested in his video. Really hope this guy does more.
Because channels who put in time and effort to make quality videos can't keep up with 10min sponsored spam that mainstream channels create
James D yes, sadly you're right.
Guess I'll get back to watching 'Spiderman and Pregnant Elsa fight the Joker 3'
Treasure planet is my favorite Disney movie and nothing can change that
why do you hate The Rescuers Down Under?
That is what we call false equivalence. Not being their favorite does not mean they hate it.
i know. it was a joke
I stumbled upon it and my kids love it too!
I agree as well, Ratatuile and Treasure Planet is one of my favourite Disney related movies, Meet the Robinsons being right behind.
Every once in a while I come back to watch this video: it's the best analysis of my favorite movie. I just wish I could like it multiple times.
real
I love this movie so much. I still get chills when I listen to 'I'm still here'. I am heartbroken that there was a sequel we'll never get to see.
@Miss Lady Shana yes. Willem Dafoe was also slated to be the villain, Ironbeard in the sequel. I’m also bummed that they scrapped the plans. :(
I cry each time “I’m still here” plays
@Miss Lady Shana Tbh though it seems like the plot of the sequel was gonna be... not the best. Very much along the lines of "well time to give our main character a rival who is also a love interest and go back on a lot of the themes of the original"
2D animation is better than 3D animation in my opinion. I value how much more “artistic” it looks, and it’s a shame that you don’t see it on the big screen anymore.
You do, in Japan and the Japanese animations that came to the US. Like Your Name, A Silent Voice, Fireworks, Dragon Ball Super Broly, etc.
MTutoriales#2018情報 yup
DBS: Broly was great
and it's more fluid
I think they're both great and different in their own respects. The problem, in my opinion, is when people see 3D animation as an upgrade to 2D animation.
"Pirates are gay, go make mermaids" is my favourite line from anything, thank yiu
