I feel like one of the reasons people are reluctent to use spells early on is that they want to save their soul guage for being able to focus and heal. When it comes to choosing between focusing or dealing extra damage (especialy when you have no idea about the damage numbers) saving it for focus seems like the safer option to new players.
Also, new players tend to be kinda bad, so they need to heal a lot more than endgame players. Some people, like me, never actually stop being bad, so I still need to heal a lot.
i find healing overrated. spam abyss shriek, boss is dead. easier than trying to find a moment where you can heal. in early game it is needed to heal though.
Me at the endgame: guess I am bad then

I personally like the nail more because it doesn’t lock your movement. I can be deftly nimble and precise, reacting quickly to unexpected movements, where using a spell might make me sit there for the half-second that makes a difference.
you know what... I totally vibe with this response. Good arguments. Yes I agree
I use the nail only because nail bounce exists. I will bounce the radiance to death if I can.

This really isn't nail vs spells in most cases, its nail+spells vs nail+healing. Spells require knowledge of the enemy you are fighting (often not much knowledge). New players are too scared to use spells because they are not used to the cast times or attack patterns. End game nail charms still win in dps but that doesn't mean experienced players stop using spells.
Yeah, especially since you usually are not going to know about quick cast on your first run.
Very true. Once you're comfortable enough against a boss, using spells whenever you can will absolutely vaporize their HP. Especially when you consider Spell Twister and Shaman Stone.

I'm surprised you didn't mention Nail Arts! I used a hybrid build of sorts to clear Trial of the Fool on my run, but the cornerstone for me was the Great Slash. It does require a good deal of investment to get Nailmaster's Glory, but it does let you double up with other build aspects (like, for instance, Shaman Stone to make your spells powerful).

Something that maybe should have been put in the nail argument was the Nail Arts gifted to you by the three Nail Masters. After all they do a load of damage, are fairly easy to get, and once all 3 are unlocked you can get a free single slot charm that nukes the windup time for using them. We begin the game with a nail, we end the game with the nail.
Just tell us that you heal vey often
@@yourdad5799 I have been trying to use spells but I always end up forgetting and using the nail. And yes I heal very often, but I’m trying to switch over still lol.
Actually you begin with focus and end with focus! You also technically start with void and end with void (depending on the ending)
We are born by the nail, made men by the nail, undone by the nail. Fear the old nail
@@yourdad5799Lol yeah, you can heal so much on Pure Vessel or Absolute Radiance or any other fast boss, right? Dude, in order to beat these bosses using only a nail, you need to learn the attacks and not catch hits, try to heal something when one hit = 2 hp. And using spells you shorten the boss fight, therefore you do not need to learn the attacks, as much as when playing with a nail. Not to mention the abuse of invulnerability with Descending Dark. So nail players are much more skilled than spell players, which confirms your own words that without spells it is impossible not to take damage and you must definitely heal.
there's also saving the meter for focus.
healing is important.
yeah, you can deal a shit ton of damage casting spells, but you can't cast the spells if you're fucking dead
But u won't need to heal if u just kill the boss fast enough
@bharatmatakayoda yeah, but the thing is
If you know when to heal, and you can get consistent enough hits, you can focus forever, and therefore theoretically battle the boss basically forever, which can help if you're not good enough to kill the boss quickly.
@@SleepyFunkin yeah but I hate long battle because luck is huge factor in them which is why I always use damage build to finish the boss quickly
I always found spells useful for bosses. That is if I’m not suffering and needing to heal for 2 minutes straight. The nail is more consistent for traveling or exploring. But I do love the endgame when it becomes super strong
Nails because using and dominating with it is SOOOOOO satisfying
This. I avoided spells for a long-ass time because spamming Abyss Shriek and calling it a day didn’t feel like a real boss fight to me. But finally beating a boss after learning all of the patterns and improving my skills? That’s so much more fun.

Hi there! Hollow Knight speedrunner here! This explanation is very accurate in terms of the different toolsets and their effectivity! I do want to note that even in the endgame, spells still are useful to use as a sort of secondary combo, and that no one who is attempting to play optimally should ever ever ever unequip shaman stone. Also DDark has mad s which makes it very powerful despite being less strong when it comes to potential damage output. Really good video though! Good thing to have some accurate guides out there
Agreed. Each spell has utility! Not using them because they sometimes have less DPS is foolish and needlessly limiting!
trick question its your dash, have shadow dash, equip sharp shadow and dash master, your dash now does 1.5x your nail damage and you have better movement and i-frames, and it just works damage into evasive movements you would do anyway
that's a waste of 4 charm notches i'd rather use on shaman stone and ddark abuse :P
yessssssssssssssssssssssss you speak my languageeeeeeeee
Also 4 charm notches is a pea compared to wasting 7 on a quick focus/deep focus combo (saying that as an example)
I'd use Sharp Shadow if it wasn't for the range "upgrade". It throws me off so much, and even if I do get used to it I'll be unable to go without it, similar to my logic with Steady Body.

for enemies with lots of projectiles i like to spam descending dark for the invincibility frames because I suck at dodging but overall both nail and spells are good for different parts of enemy fights (example when hornet does her little silk circle whip type thingy where she floats)
I usually refrain from casting spells because I could either cast a spell or save the soul for heals and perform chip damage with the nail. Using a mix between a healing build and a nail arts build saved me in the trial of the fool
You’re insults actually helped me learn more about how the damage works in the game then you think

This man out here making the pale King and radiance tremble
Honestly, I had no idea the spells were so good, but as someone with crappy reflexes and not the best ability to read enemy moves, that full soul container could be the difference between surviving or not, so it never feels safe to 'waste' it with spells. And also honestly, that wouldn't matter so much if it wasn't often such a pain to just get back to the thing I was trying to fight from a bench.
I will give credit where credit is due, however, this series has helped me to realize that the fights aren't necessarily as chaotic or hard as I thought they were, and opening my eyes to the fact that I was making them that way. Having concise, easy to understand breakdowns of some of the patterns has sort of evened the playing field a bit. Made it feel less like a fight for my life and more about a series of steps and objectives.
The type of video is also just hilarious and I love it, so that's also fanastic lmao

I never read opposing theories on damage types but I had assumed that the argument was over spells vs healing. Many people want a safety net so casting a spell feels like sacrificing part of your health bar.
ESPECIALLY when that spell doesn't connect (or was an accidental fire that also misses for obvious reasons)
At the end of the day, if you're using both of them at the correct times you're good. The nail is super consistent and free to use, but vengeful spirit has some good opportunities in boss fights to sub in for nail hits, such as casting it between hits, or using it as the final hit of a window where you can only get 2-3 hits in. Shriek is great for floating enemies and dive has useful s.

There's no reason to use soul eater and not spell twister
Spell twister makes spells cost 7 or 8 less spirit, and soul eat gives that amount extra per hit. You're saving 2 charm slots for essentially the same effect.
Edit: if you use both with abyss shriek on warrior graves they go down so fast
@@mentalpopcorn2304 Soul Eater was a charm I never really used, so I decided to experiment with it (it was Lost Kin I was fighting so zero risk). Good to know that ST is better though.
@Deborah Ajao soul catcher gives 3 extra soul per hit iirc, but soul eater gives something like 7-8 extra soul
I say this as someone who loves spells: do *not* use the soul-gathering charms. Soul Catcher does next to nothing, while Soul Eater takes up twice as many notches as you should be using for this. Use Spell Twister instead. It makes spells just as easy to charge as if you had Soul Eater, but it only costs as much as Soul Catcher. It all depends on your playstyle, whether its close combat, range,or defensive or offensive
Something I’ve learned while watching a speed run for this game.
When you upgrade the needle it multiplies some of the bosses HP; this multiplier does not apply to spells so if you delay upgrading the needle you can steam roll some enemies quickly.
