    One of the underrated things I love about this trilogy is that they tell a pretty complex spy story, but in a way that everyone always knows exactly as much a they should. They convey the secrets and subtlety in a way viewers can grasp the ideas, but are also just as confused and lost as Jason is. It's a tight rope to walk and they do it beautifully. It's one of those things you don't appreciate until you watch it like this, already knowing what happens.
    Seeing someone who DOESN'T know what happens, but still grasps the major plot points, tells you what a great job the writing/direction did.

    • @atomicNoodle
      @atomicNoodle ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You point out something really good here! I never quite realised until you put it in to words, but these movies are indeed good at doing the 'spy' thing without overly complex or over-the-top plot structures. There's secrecy and subtlety, but it's never intentionally over complex or disoriented in the way it's displayed.

      I liked her character a lot but I will respectfully disagree and quote the first movie: She would slow him down or the tempo of the movie anyway. It was a necessary/right move right from the beginning to keep the pacing from the director or the script + the motivation for revenge adding another element to the story. His “true” love is someone else anyway. He just can't remember. ;) I also believe IMO that relationship was the trigger that started the whole situation on the boat when he could not kill Wombosi right in front of the kids. Knowing how it feels when you lose someone you love right in front of your eyes. But this is just my own theory.

      @christopherconte27 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    The original Bourne trilogy movies are based on three novels by Robert Ludlum. The novels are set in the 70's/80's and Jason Bourne was a deep cover agent tasked with hunting down Carlos The Jackal (an actual terrorist from that era). As in the first movie Jason loses his memory but the CIA thinks he's gone rogue as he no longer follows their protocols, but is using their assets. In the books the role of Marie is filled in by a woman who works for the Canadian Embassy and by the end of the book Jason finds his way back to the CIA (who have been trying to kill him) after he almost gets Carlos. Cocklin survives in the books and is deeply apologetic for his mistakes. Jason also learns his real identity (David Webb) and retires together with Marie to become a professor. In the second book, someone in the Far East is posing as Jason Bourne, using the same methods and tools as Jason did during his career. So the Secret Service in Hong Kong decides that they need the "real" Jason Bourne to hunt down the fake one. As David has no interest in this, they fake kidnap Marie and make it seem that the fake Jason Bourne is behind this. So David goes back into action again. The third book in the series finally deals with David having to take up the mantle again to take down Carlos for good.
    There was a miniseries produced of the first book, which starred Richard Chamberlain (of Shogun fame) as Jason, which actually follows the first book quite closely. Of course the later movies couldn't do this as a) the CIA had become somewhat of a suspicious agency in many people's eyes and b) the real Carlos the Jackal had been arrested many years before and there wasn't really anyone who could be used in his place.

    Living in Berlin it's funny to see how many "Moscow" scenes were actually filmed in Berlin (The Moscow airport scenes at the car park, Karl Urban exiting the club onto the street, Bourne travelling to the Neski girls' former apartment by taxi, Bourne getting shot and the Police officers arresting Karl Urban, the tunnel car chase)...for some scenes they didn't even have to do much set dressing 😀 Also the exploding house supposed to be in Munich is actually in Berlin...I walked by it after watching the movie to see what it looked like now and if you could see any evidence of the blast...but of course, it was all special effects...the house was actually for sale! They shot the movie during the winter of 2003/2004 and it was bitterly cold...some friends from my class were participating as extras in the "protest" crowd scenes at Alexanderplatz, similar protests were really happening at the time with students of schools and universities being on strike and protesting against the education system. My classmates had to be up all night in freezing temperatures until the scenes were set up but didn't make it on camera 😀 The movie theatre I watched this movie in when it premiered can actually be seen in the movie, which was kinda a weird experience!

      I think that was one of the two major aspects of the books they had to leave out because of the actor they chose. The other is that, in the books, Bourne is past his physical prime so some of the things he could rely on don't work as well. Matt Damon was too young for those things to be plausible. The thing to remember about the shaky cam thing is, to a large degree, that style came from these movies. They made the quick cut, hand held camera fight scene and interior shot car chase popular. It has become overused, but the car chase in this one, when it first came out, was like nothing we had ever seen before. It was viscerally impactful in a way that shocked the hell out of people.

      Not only has it become overused, the way it's used now is pretty bad. People don't really know how to use it effectively. A lot of the time you aren't able to tell what the hell is going on when modern movies use it. But this movie uses it masterfully.

    A guy on TH-cam met Karl Urban at a convention and asked him if he thought his character survived his injuries and Urban said he likely did. If he died, it would negate Bourne's mercy and make it for nothing.
    Bourne meeting the Neski girl is my favorite scene out of a huge number of great scenes in this movie. Once Bourne found out what he did in his old life, he didn't hesitate: he put his own life at risk to do The Right Thing as best he could. Didn't care how angry he was, he wasn't going to dishonor Marie or go against his own moral principles to cave. The fact that he didn't care if his last act was apologizing to this girl for what he did makes Bourne a better character than James Bond IMO.

    • @leonardofacchin1452
      @leonardofacchin1452 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. That scene is one of my favorites' in any movie. Especially because of the ambiguity: it's not entirely clear if Jason is just being altruistic (he wants the girl to know so that she can move on) or if he is also trying to alleviate the feeling of guilt that is devouring him. Maybe a little bit of both, especially if we go by one of the following chapter's dialogues (which I won't elaborate on in order to avoid spoilers for people that might have not seen it yet).
      Also, I always found Oksana Akishina beautiful in that scene. And I don't mean it in a sexualized way. She was definitely pretty, but it was the mix of vulnerability, palpable fear and strength that she managed to impart on the character in just a few minutes of screentime that made that scene so touching in my opinion.

    Great reaction and insights as always. It's unfortunate, but Marie's death reinforces that Bourne can't have a normal life and his story can't have a happy ending. Even though it was his job and under the pretense of "national security", he has killed too many people to come out of this clean.
    Someone else mentioned "Ronin" with DeNiro and Reno, I would have to strongly agree that you guys should watch that, a great action / thriller. And I would also have to throw "3 Days of the Condor" with Redford in there as well. I am waiting for someone (anyone) to react to that film. And not just because it's a great addition to this genre, but that it takes place in the mid '70s and so very interesting to see what was considered "high tech" back then and how the main character navigates and gathers information in a time with no internet, no cell phones, etc.

    Yeah, Karl Urban may be Billy Butcher in The Boys, but he's also Eomer in the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, Doctor 'Bones' McCoy in the latest round of Star Trek movies, had significant roles in other movies like Thor: Ragnarok, Doom, Riddick, RED, and an uncredited Stormtrooper in Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker, as well as TV shows like Almost Human, Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, among others. Unfortunately, I don't see that you've seen ANY of those on your channel. Oh well, you definitely have something to look forward to.
    Also, I think you misunderstood the scene where Jason had the desk clerk call Pamela Landy's room. If you L👀k back at that scene, I think you'll notice him calling the hotel as he walks in and asks the hotel operator to ring Pam's room, then he immediately walks to the front desk and asks the clerk to also ring her room ... WHILE he's still on the line with the hotel's receptionist. This gives him an excuse to NOT talk with her (he can't ... the phone is busy) while also seeing the room number. He didn't know it before, because they probably wouldn't give out room numbers to strangers so, by doing what he did, he got them to show it to him. As proof, you can see him hanging up his cell phone just after the clerk tells him that the phone is busy.

    Glad you liked the movie. I also, didn't care for the shaking of the camera technique. This is one of those movies where it's completely unnecessary. The John Wick movies is proof of that.
    I'd like to remind you, I love watching you two because you do the one thing I watch you for, Movie Review. Some couples have to argue or converse on something based off a scene. A couple of times I saw some reactors talk about something completely different from what the subject was: 1)talks about aliens and whether they believe in them or not. It's was a demon possession story. It was The Exorcist. 2) talks about surviving a tragedy and wonders how life can be so cruel. IT WAS MERCENARIES, DUDE!!! That one was Leathal Weapon.
    Whenever I watch reactors that don't even pay attention, I have to change the channel. I'm watching them for their re.act.ion.
    Some couples just argue. Boo 👎.
    All in all, I'm always happy to see you two, because of your reactions. Hang on to her, sir. I could never get a girl that could do this. I'd always get talkers that talk about everything under the sun, EXCEPT the movie. (wah).
