Franka Potente is such an underrated German actress. If you haven’t seen it, she was in the really inventive movie Run Lola Run. She’s basically running to save her criminal boyfriend’s life. It’s very creative visually and is another late 90s film.
She is perfect in this movie 🍿
Yes! Run Lola Run is such a great movie! A must see! As you say, she is constantly running the entire movie, trying to save her boyfriend's life after he messed up while doing a thing for his mob boss. And it has a Groundhog Day feel to it, as she keeps failing, but not giving up, trying again.

This was a groundbreaking movie. So many movies copied the fighting style and the directorial style to the point where it's generic now but at the time this came out it blew people away.
sadly that is what happens with "good techniques".. so many copied styles after star wars and all the disaster movies and now the super hero stuff is almost generic.. miss the originality

Even Star Wars ripped off countless things from samurai culture to Akira Kurosawa films to the Dam Busters to classic swashbuckling action films that were popular when Lucas was a kid.
(ironically the Star Wars original trilogy were actually huge step down in fight choreography from the better films of the swashbuckling age of Hollywood like the B&W Mark of Zorro)
All Lucas did was add a sci fi to those things combined with some great acting talent and a top notch FX team headed by Douglas Trumbull (oh ye and Lucas copied 2001 A Space Odyssey too).
George Lucas stood on the shoulders of geniuses to get to Star Wars - he's a hack.
WIthout a last minute save in the cutting room even A New Hope would have failed - ESB and TORJ weren't directed by him for good reasons - the studio knew he was problematic.

All movies "copy" something. That's what they're designed to do. Their job is to entertain you, not invent something new. Even movies like Avatar are just new combinations of various older concepts in a new package and new ways to illustrate them.

It's ironic because watching this the 1st time on rental I must have tuned it out completely because I didn't rewatch it until I saw Bourne Supremacy in the cinema a year later.

What's weirdly inspiring about these movies is that with each moment he stays alive, each challenge he overcomes, he is steadily turning all luck and chance against the people who programmed him to kill and now want him dead. You run a network of assassins, you lose one man and presume him dead, and pow, the next thing you know, your whole house of cards is tumbling down and you can't stop it.
I love Clive Owen's line too. "Look at this, look at what they make you give."
And as others have said, this came out the same year as the last old-school Bond movie, "Die Another Day", and changed the way Bond (and other) spy-suspense movies were made. Craig's Bond is closer to Bourne than Brosnan's Bond.
BTW I think Clive Owen was in the running for Bond at one point

Clive Owen was up for bond but decided to do Children of Men.
Hell, they're all rip-offs Of THE DESTROYER novels by Richard Sapir and Warren Murphy which began publication in 1973 though the first book was actually WRITTEN in 1963 during the Kennedy Administration/ (JFJ was a huge fan of the James Bond novels, as it happens)/
Also the line is repeated at the end of Ultimatum from Bourne to the Assassin he didn’t kill. Makes the guy question everything and not take the shot.
This is such a good movie. For me The Bourne Identity does quick cuts in the action sequences right, as opposed to so many movies that tried to copy it and did it wrong. In this movie the quick cuts are used to enhance the action, and they're done in a way that actually helps you to follow the action and see everything that's happening. It works with the fight choreography, instead of obscuring it. In most movies that rely heavily on quick cuts they make them too quick and they use them to try to make a very run of the mill fight sequence seem more exciting by making it so that you can't really tell what's going on, and you can't see how bad the fight choreography is.
The problem is that it’s been done to death, like so many action and Marvel movies that overuse CG. Every movie now is made for people who missed their morning Ritalin dose. I really enjoyed this movie when it came out, but I look at it like I look at a lot of movies. Starting in the late 90s, pacing in movies went out of control. When do we ever see James Bond just relaxing and enjoying himself for more than 30 seconds? The camera never sits still either. This was inventive filmmaking at the time, but now it’s not special anymore. It’s been done to death. I look at it like atomic energy. It might have been okay if it was just used as an alternative to electricity, but someone had to go ahead and build a bomb with it. Terminator 2 used CGI perfectly. Now stunt work and practical effects that actually look believable barely exist.
Completely agree. The editing in this film allows you to appreciate the fight choreography. I like the sequels a lot less because I feel that the quick cuts are used to obscure the choreography instead.
Yes the quick cuts and shaky cameras are amazing. To me it's even more amazing in the Supremacy and Ultimatum.
I'd rather the choreography be so good they don't need quick cuts at all.
But it was the Bourne sequels by Paul Greengrass that took the quick cuts too far. Unfortunately, it's the financial success of those films that caused other films to copy that style. So we ended up with ruined action scenes in Batman Begins and Quantum of Solace. The Bourne Identity did it right. The action in The sequels are a jumbled mess. Fortunately, that style seems to have been dialed back these days. Though Michael Bay still annoys audiences with it.
Love this series, these movies skyrocketed Matt Damon, he was already known for actually have good acting skills but after this he also became an action hero

"Enemy of the state" with Will Smith and Gene Hackman is also a great spy movie!

Chris Cooper is a great actor (the CIA bad guy). He’s amazing in Adaptation and Nicholas Cage gives two of his best performances. He plays twins.

@@robertocarbonvarela6387 Yeah Breach is a very interesting twist on this kind of character. And then a great different character is him as a modern sheriff in Lone Star (also with a super young Matthew McConnaughey and many others).
He's good as always however in this movie there's too much going back and forth to their command center and it kind of breaks up the rhythm of the movie for me and makes his character seem too important to the story, less of those scenes would'be been better in my opinion. Basically, I guess it's too much of a good thing here.
He's also the extremely unbalanced next door neighbor in American Beauty.
Hey Daniel and Sam, I think you really enter the mindset of Jason Bourne. --------- Bourne wants a regular life as he watches the kids at the lay over house. He just wants to be a regular man not a world class GOD Tier assassin. ------- Clive Owens' dialogue lets us know so much, "They takes so much from us. Look at what they make you give."-------- The price of being a 007 agent is so high for sure.
I really love Clive's part in this. You actually get "the feels" for his character at his end. You suddenly understand what these men have been put through to make them something more than they actually want to be.
Such a shame Julia Styles stopped acting. i know she is happy behind the camera, but she has such a presence on screen. Every movie I have seen with her I enjoyed her performance.
Yeah I got spoiled when she was in a Shakespeare adaptation every other year (10 Things I Hate About You, O, Hamlet) and miss her a lot now. I think the last thing I saw her in was Silver Linings Playbook, which was a small part but making her Jennifer Lawrence's older sister was genius casting.
If she stopped acting I never noticed, hope it's not a new development I've missed.

Another movie in a similar style but which is vastly underrated is "The International" with Clive Owen.

12:18 This moment was when I experienced the greatest pain I can recall. I had broken my collarbone a few weeks prior and was sleeping in a recliner. I had this movie playing and must have dozed off sometime after Marie picked him up (I had seen the movie before). But when the agent crashed through the window, I woke up and my whole body jumped. That hurt far more than the initial break since it moved so suddenly out of its normal position.
Not sure if you recognized him, but Brian Cox was also in "The Long Kiss Goodnight." 🙂

In the end when Abbott went to the oversight committee to tell them Treadstone was decomissioned he mentioned Blackbriar as the next study he was seeking funding for. Blackbriar is the next iteration of Treadstone and features in the sequels.
Then, with the introduction of Operation Blackfriar into the picture, the stress, tension and danger levels are launched through the roof.
Guys the Bourne Trilogy are amazing films, with Identity, Supremacy and Ultimatum all just brilliant and cannot be split, as each one is as good as the other. You gotta do the three they are off the charts!
Hey Daniel and Sam, your analysis of the story theme in the Bourne identity is so spot on, where there is a reveral of tactics in this movie. Jason Bourne has to investigate himself as opposed to finding out about another person who committed a crime.------ It makes for a very compelling story divergence. Great reaction.
These movies surprised me so much. I remember thinking casting Matt Damon as an elite spy/assassin was so ridiculous. Then I actually watched them, and they're up there with the absolute best of the genre.

Finally...I've been waiting All Day for this one to upload! Thanks Friends, and as I've mentioned before...there are 5 Bourne movies total. I know most only stop after the first 3 (calling that a complete Trilogy), but if y'all are up for it...I will support Your Reactions to All 5!!!!!
Nah. The last one with Damon was terrible. Just a retread of the trilogy, with literal scene and scenerio recreations, a terrible villain, and just lazy writing all around.

This movie started the whole quick-cut method of filming action scenes. However, if you look at how they filmed it in this movie every cut serves a purpose to tell the story or to generate a feeling in the audience. You never see the director just cutting for the sake of cutting. Replay the embassy scene as he works his way up the building, each cut telling you soneyhinf about the way he notices little things in a completely chaotic situation while on the run.

These movies are taken from the novels by Robert Ludlum - the first one coming out in 1980. They are a great read on their own. There was also a mini series for tv made in 1988 starring Richard Chamberlain and Jaclyn Smith (an original Charlie's Angel).
Came here to give Ludlum his props. He was the master at beginning his books in the middle of the story, where your head was spinning in the first chapter.
The ending to this and them doing the Jumper change had me wondering where they could go with the next one. Cause they kinda had to go even looser with the adaptation.
A great franchise that's worth watching.
Glad people are finally reacting to this series. Hope you do them all except the Renner one. (1, 2, 3, & 5) It's mostly unrelated.
People write the fifth one off but it does add some more pieces of the story.
this is legit my personal favorite trilogy of all time, I love the spy action genre, but this trilogy has a more somber and isolating vibe than james bond and mission impossible (which I also love) and the darker vibe of these films really gets with me

One of the few trilogies where each gets better than the previous through Ultimatum. A lot of people don't like the sequels with its hand-held camera work, but honestly, it's more suited than the stand-still cameras for the fights, because this kind of spy series is meant to be grounded and gritty, not to be a martial arts show.
It's entertaining but it's the farthest thing from grounded I'll tell you that. Body of Lies is way more grounded.
This was sort of a reaction to all the over the top James Bond movies. This and Taken later on, showed a more realistic form of hand to hand combat

@adalatcc12 Yes, but the plot was a little different. But it started Richard chamberlain. Jackelin Smith ( from Charles Angels) and Robert Mitcham.
His mission was to capture or kill the terrorist / mercenary. ( Carlos the jackel) the world most wanted man . ( in real life ) cold War story . Chamberlain was a big star then . 70s movies and 80s TV shows and mini series.

It's crazy how in the early 2000s, this trilogy (at the time) was heralded for being revolutionary in its action sequences, having quick cuts and shaky camera everywhere, compared to now, when use of either one of these things, much less both, is lauded as being terrible choices when choreography and one-takes are so prevalent.

I love the scene in the park with the 2 policemen and when Bourne disabled them, he stared in disbelief of what he just did.
Now waiting for the THREE (or four, if you count the Bourne Legacy) sequels.
In my opinion Legacy is the second best of the franchise after Identity. Instead of staying with Bourne it gives us a different yet parallel perspective. The action is also staged and shot much better than the Greengrass films.
It's a shame fans blindly dismissed it based solely on the absence of Matt Damon. Ironically, I suspect those same fans made up the majority of the people complaining about Damon when he was originally cast.
Okay, you guys have to do the rest of the series now. 😊
As with so many classic movies, you also have to appreciate the time they came out in. Bourne was one of those movies like the Matrix that changed the whole genre.
Looking forward to you revieweing the next 2 installments, "Bourne Ultimatum" being my favourite! The next one, "Bourne Supremacy" was largely shot in Berlin, some of my then-classmates participated as extras in crowd scenes, having to wait all night for a few seconds of filming during freezing weather. Actually I watched that movie in the cinema when it came out and the same cinema features in a brief shot in the movie...so that was a weird feeling 🙂. "Run Lola Run" which has been recommended in a lot of comments here already is also a wonderful time machine for me to remember the rough Berlin of the late 90s. Do see it! The unexpected success it had outside of Germany and especially in the USA paved the way for Franka Potente making her way over to Hollywood.
Seen this movie many times but never noticed the red bag with flowers at the end before.
The final shot with the first few notes of the iconic theme 'Extreme Ways' by Moby, now I got that stuck in my head. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. It brings the entire Bourne experience flooding back. I wish you guys could have reacted to that, but I realize movie reaction channels have to jump through different copyright hoops than music reactors, somehow. Anyway, great reaction!

I really enjoyed watching this movie with you two. This is my kind of movie. I liked seeing her doing the jump scares it was fun. I love how immersed she is in in movies. Listening to you two watching a movie I love was a really good time.
I always loved the irony of a man who doesn't know his identity and is suddenly confronted with a multitude of IDs as soon as he opens that safety box... from being "no one" to being "too many" in a heartbeat, he still has no idea who he is even after finding those papers. Nice creative way to prolong the mystery for the audience and the desperation for the fictional character at the same time.
You two are excellent. Thoroughly enjoy your reactions. It is fun to watch folks thinking and figuring out the story.

I think an overwhelming majority of movies that try to "break into" the spy (James Bond) genre tend to fall short.
Jason Bourne did an extremely good job IMO.
Also, I agree, Marie is a GREAT stand-in for the "Everyman", along with being a "sidekick" & "love interest" to Jason. She does provide "balance" for Bourne too.
I don't remember if it was the writer or director, but I heard him in an interview once saying that what he tried to do with these movies was make them so that if you removed all the action scenes you would still have a compelling story. That in itself is I think part of what makes the Bourne movies so good.
Also, I fully back Run Lola Run, it's fantastic and there's very little dialogue, so it would be easy to react to. Lots of excellent visual storytelling.
I always liked that his underlying personality always came through with him NOT wanting kill if he could get out of it another way.. BUT he would kill if pushed to it

Jason Bourne was my ideal spy character.
Because he was so flawed, relatable and stoic.
Definite Inspiration on The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996) and Jackie Chan's Who Am I? (1998).
The novel series by Robert Ludlum debuted in the year I was born (1980).
I saw the very-first screen adaptation on television with Richard Chamberlain & Jaclyn Smith when I was 8 (1988).
Matt Damon getting his own franchise, 5 years after winning an Academy Award was unprecedented.
So great from start to finish and more of an tradition approach to the genre.
I have the special edition from 2004 with alternate beginning and ending that makes the story more complex.
The next 2 films (2004, 2007) are incredible.
The 3rd film (2012) with Jeremy Renner is not liked very much.
But was a decent enough sequel to me.
The 4th film (2016) with Damon's return as Bourne is a phenomenal one.
Extreme Ways (The Bourne Theme) by Moby is killer.
Incidentally, Brian Cox co-stars in Long Kiss Goodnight as well.

I just introduced my 15 year old son to these films on vacation, he loved them so much, he rode his motorcycle up a 1,000 ft hill to get enough cell signal to get the bourne supremacy and ultimatum, he really enjoyed them
Wow, that one caught me off guard. Its the original "shaky cam" movie, as you propably have seen. Furthermore, before Bourne Identity action heroes were often portrayed in very unrealistic fight scenes and loaded with all kinds of gadgets, especially through the eighties and nineties. Bourne was able to ground the genre while still providing engagement for an desensitivesed audience. Complete the whole trilogy, if you can!

I enjoyed the Bourne movies too :) I've seen them many times over the years. One thing that you didn't mention about this movie: not only does Jason not know who he is, he is also an American in Europe. That was done intentionally, to increase his sense of isolation.

Grew up watching loads of action movies with car chases galore but when first watching this I thought it had one of the best car chase sequences I'd seen for a very very long time because it makes you feel like your in the car, Ronin was the other movie with an awesome car chase that stands out above all that came before.

Hope you do The Great Escape. Another related war adventure movie that is fun is The Dirty Dozen. Both have stellar casts. And the Great Escape is based on a real event, although highly fictionalized.
"Team America" and "Bourne" are my favorite movies from Matt Damon, but "Team America" still Best performance from "Matt Damon!".

At the three minute mark he's speaking Dutch, not Italian. Don't know why they chose to let him speak such an obscure language, as in not many people speak it, but they did it very well. And so did he. So accurate it just makes me laugh every time. Must've had an actual Dutch vocal coach for those few lines.
My Spanish-Language teacher offered 5 point extra credit on one of her exams. All we had to do was guess her favorite action film. The answer was The Bourne Identity movie, and nobody guesses that.
The girl actor (Franka Potente) is also great in "Run Lola Run", a German move with sub-titles. She's more the lead in that movie. Film has an interesting premise. Highly recommend. Now TBR, you need to watch a pure rom-com. It's only fair! 😀

When he's on the fishing boat he isn't speaking the fisher's language (in the part that you're showing here) , he's speaking Dutch. Surprisingly well for a non-native actor, actually. Usually when they have to speak a bit of Dutch, actors will have a thick non-native accent, but this sounds very close to native; I remember being impressed by that when I first saw the movie :)
This is cool,I own all these on blu-ray now. This one especially is one of my favorite movies for like a handful of reasons. I love this movie.
If you watch all three then you have to watch "The Bourne Legacy" with Jeremy Renner. It is also well worth the watch.
You notice after this movie came out that a lot of the action adventure genre movies, started significant changes in terms of how the films were shot and also how stunt choreography is done .
I LOVE the Bourne movies! They are all good. My mom even loved them! Great fight sequences. Like "Taken" as well.

Can I just say that if your favourite movie is children of men and you like Clive Owen, who is a great actor by the way, that you really need to see Croupier. It’s one of Mike Hodges best films and seeing as he also directed Get Carter, which is the best British movie ever made, that’s high praise.
I first saw Clive Owen in a British TV movie from around 1990 called Precious Bane-he was great in it, as was Janet McTeer.
Clive Owen and Denzel Washington are great in Inside Man with Josie Foster and Christopher Plummer supporting!!!!

I rewatched the trilogy in anticipation of you guys watching this, always a fun time and never gets old no matter how many times I've watched it. Glad Sam enjoyed the first one and is excited to watch the other two! Also, even though I've seen these movies many times, when I rewatched the first one that jump scare in the apartment really startled me lol it's a great jump scare, but also done really well in context of the scene, as is I think the realization of them not being safe at the house at the end - the tension feels so real. I think that's something they do well with these movies, is the tension building and keeping everything feeling grounded. Not only great action movies but great movies in general that are made exceptionally well. One of the all time classic trilogies in my opinion, on par with other big ones like Back To The Future, Star Wars, LOTR...love the Bourne movies so much and I was like Sam for a while and didn't think I would but they're some of my favorites to rewatch. Can't wait for your reactions to the next too!!
Always thought that Jason could have given some appreciation and thanks - and some of the money he throws around casually - to the fisherman who saved him, nursed him back to health and gave him money to get him on his way.
This movie along with the next two are great films! I haven’t watched the one from a few years ago but I think it’ll be as good as the previous three. and this was also made the year I was born!
