WTH?.... I'm an electronics tech (10yrs) and retired USN electronics tech (20yrs). Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is a VERY common pcb cleaning solution. Now it should be a high purity (99/98%) and not the generic rubbing alcohol (70%) from the local pharmacy.
Little tid bit of knowledge, IPA (at least the ones with high purity) do not conduct electricity.

AT2 (HSL-41, 1988 - 1992) here. I used to "wash" my hands with copious amounts of Trichloroethelene after avionics maintenance. Worked great! Causes cancer. Today, brake cleaner and/or WD-40 is the solvent of choice, for cleaning my computer parts. But, yea. PURE IPA also works well... Drugstore 70/30 has a LOT of water, which can damage computer parts/electronics.

What about 91% gotta use that cause Walmart never sells 99%. It works for me and I have tried 70% once which works too but I let it dry overnight cause it’s pretty close to 50% too lol.

@@strawberrysherbet96 Gotta work with what ya got. I'd do like you already are and extend the drying time or give it a bit of a bake. The lower purity ones will tend to leave a film though (this may or may not bother you depending on what your cleaning). Cheers.

@@strawberrysherbet96it's fine to use the '91% especially if you make sure it's dried out pretty well. Take the component and kind of fan it in the air, that will throw off any unevaporated liquid. Just don't pull a Linus and launch it across the room.

I think using IPA is a good solution. The fact that it not only does a great job removing dirt, but it also evaporates very quickly. Recently I did acquire an old beast and it would not work at all. Hit the power button and it would shut off 1 second after pressing the power key. I pulled the board out, and there were dust bunnies on the back which I assumed created a short. I cleaned it up and wouldn't you know it? It works completely fine. That was just with a good brushing.

some motherboards have a BIOS setting for behavior when power is restored, and you can have it just boot up. Problem you've replaced the CMOS battery many times so that setting ought to have reset by now. I think the board is kaput since it doesn't even give beep codes. If it was a working mobo, it would still give beep codes if it had no CPU and/or no GPU.

In your first video, at 15:10 you were asking about the pattern on the back of the board. That is a tale-tale sign that the board has been HOT!!!. I used to work for a repair shop that had some success reflowing solder and fixing a dead board using an oven. It does work some of the time, of coarse there are videos on YT about it, and because of that many people try it themselves to varying degrees of success. All that boards that we reflowed using the oven looked nearly identical. Why you might ask. It is the rosin cooking out of the 60/40 solder.

Okay, I went back and watched the other video again as a refresh on what people were complaining about, and I'm sorry but if you think spraying IPA on a motherboard and cleaning it with a toothbrush is bad... then you're probably not the "computer technician" you think you are. You cannot damage an electric circuit with a neutral liquid if it's powered off, and there are liquids that you can spray on it that can't damage it even if it's powered on. For applications where they can't have downtime, they take a pressure washer to industrial power equipment and servers... while they are powered. This is a special blend of chemicals that are not conductive, which normal people won't have, but you just need to remove power first and fully dry it before powering it on again. As for the toothbrush... nothing wrong with that as long as you aren't ham-fisted neanderthal and you just get overly aggressive. I've brought so many mobos back to life use this method. HOWEVER, I would absolutely remove the CMOS battery first.
Also, I have worked for several PC repair shops and I run my own now... you need to know the laws in your state and how this is handled, but you just can't be expected to hold on to their computer perpetually. You eventually have the right to sell it if they don't ever come back to pick it up or they refuse to pay.

I would've at least used some thermal paste while testing the cpu just to be on the safe side, but aside from that I didn't really see any issues. As for the 2.5 inch drive, I'd recommend grabbing the 10 dollar icy dock adapter and throwing it in the 3.5 inch bay for propriety's sake to make it look a litte cleaner.

  • @twizz420
    @twizz420 4 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

I've had the bristles from an "ultrasoft" toothbrush get under surface mount components and rip them right off the board before. That's why I only use a very soft paintbrush now.
Iso is fine to use, but not rubbing alcohol. If you can't get at least 99% iso then don't use it. In 70% iso, the other 30% is water. That's why it's bad to use rubbing alcohol. If you drop a phone or something in water, don't turn it back on. Dunk it into a container of 99% iso. The iso displaces the water, even if the water has gotten into the circuit board(s).
Also you can use chlorine-free brake cleaner as well. It tends to work a little better because it's pressurized.

Let me help, as far as batteries goes, the 2032 is a 3.2 volt battery new, any voltage below 3 volts replace. When you are trying to figure CPU vs M/B which is bad. In my life I have only had one CPU bad. Mostly look at motherboard when you have to pick between the two. Also, good on you for documenting everything, and protecting yourself. There are some really shifty people out there whom don't care if they're taking food off your table, or not. They've got no problems ripping people off, and as long as they get what they want out of you, they'll do it. At the end of the day they thought they could pull one over on you, and they ended up paying for it. Now you can sell it as a refurbished PC, and at least gain compensation for your troubles.

I purchased a 25L with similar issues. I'm fairly confident that Windows update pushed out a bad bios update that bricked the motherboard. I'd bet money that that is what happened here.

I have had the auto power on when power was removed while the board was learning a new configuration, i.e. after cpu or ram swap.

I'd detour and see if that water damage can be resolved before following through with the swap, gonna have to mess with all the cables, plus it's far more resellable with original mobo as a SKU and all the features there like m.2 etc.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but in the previous video that he sold him a working i5 system (with a 1070) and that guy came back with an i7. Now, we find out it's a 10700F AND a 2060.
If anything, the fact that the customer fucked off and basically tried to "scam" him with a 10700 and 2060 (depends where you look, but a 10700 is still roughly $150-200 CAD and some 2060s are looking to be around under 200 nowadays), that's a win win with a mountain of cherries on top.
People are saying time was wasted trying to diagnose and fix this, I say- I spent time finding out I was given $400 instead! ($360 if you take into account of the motherboard)

There's nothing wrong with using isopropyl alcohol; I've been repairing computers and electronics for 38 years and have extensive experience in the industry. The concerns about isopropyl alcohol are largely unfounded-it's perfectly safe. In fact, you can even immerse electronics in a bath with dish soap, provided they're not plugged in, of course! Regarding the mainboard issue, the likely culprits could be power delivery, a faulty MOSFET, or the customer may have corrupted the firmware. Generally, everything during the post is managed at startup, and a classic sign of corrupted firmware is when issues arise at this stage.

Curious, maybe worth a try. If you cleaned that goo off the back of that Omen mobo? Is it possible that is causing the mobo to auto power on as soon as you turn on the PSU? Most like the Mobo is fried, but its worth a try to clean off that goo and see if it resolves the issue.

You might be able to save that board- no idea how much the board is worth so it may not be worth the trouble, though if it is water damage it could just be a bad/shorted capacitor that needs replacing. Looks like this worked out for you in the end!
It'll be funny with you using this rig as a test bench so if the Person who tried scamming you follows your vids, they'll then get to see it many of your vids!

I have more then once saved a PC I should have tossed in the trash. I exchanged a dead PC for one of my old spares... (all junk to today's standards really)
Was for someone I knew a long time ago and reached out to me. I gave everything for free as I like to help people.
    I gave a perfectly fixed Core2Quad 6700, 8GB Ram, Radeon HD5700 (old)... 250GB SSD + 1GB mechanical... Windows 10... ran flawlessly. It's old but does the job.
I took his old not booting Acer FM1 AMD, it had a lower end A4 cpu (useless trash) and 500GB mechanical drive.
In short for the fun of maxing it out, I paid for the highest end CPU the board can take, and A10 which is a quad core @ 3.0Ghz with intergrated radeon.
Then I realized the motherboard was the issue, so I ebayed a replacement motherboard... and all in all... it's just a shit system that his brutally slower than a back then 120$ OEM 2nd gen I5 2400.
    250$ CAD wasted.
Then again, I did it because it's a unique AMD and was curious to how it held up...
Badly is the answer... it's complete crap.

As far as the IPA goes, even if it doesn't hurt, I just don't see it fixing a faulty motherboard. A bad MB is the result of some electronic failure, not because it's physically dirty. Of course it's helpful to clean a dusty pc, but air/vacuuming is sufficient.
Lastly you mentioned the motherboard was in there with only 1 or 2 screws? Then you are risking frying the board because of shorting it. Any contact with the metal case should be grounded with screws.

If the board does not even attempt to post like yours its worth trying a different bios chip or reprogram the one on there. If all the voltages on the board are there, i mean. Had a asus crosshair iii formula last week that did not beeb or do anything except turn on and off. Bios chip was bad. Also had this tiny short near the sio but taking the shorted part off and putting it back fixed that.

One last ditch effort to see if that HP motherboard works or not is to clean the back side with a toothbrush and isopropyl alcohol and in and around the CPU socket to drench it in isopropyl alcohol and use a can or compressed air to see if anything comes out from uderneath the socket.
I tried that on 1 board and it worked. It's a 50-50 chance it will work you you unless something popped on the board.

Alcohol is fine. Even if it were lower purity like 70 the computer was off and it dries quickly.
I've cleaned electronics with alcohol for many, many, years and I have never had a problem with it damaging components.

I've seen so many of these 9th to 12th gen Intel CPUs just die at random, even under warranty. Custom builds and OEM. By comparison I see so many OEM boards from this same generation die versus the custom build boards have a much lower failure rate.
I have worked in IT for 20+ years so i deal with a larger quantity of PCs than most.

The motherboard is shorting somewhere. Probably nothing you can do about it unless you feel like desoldering and re-soldering the whole thing, and even that's not a guarantee. If two traces are shorted, RIP to that board EDIT: Just saw the water damage, so I was sort of right. It was shorting. It'd be interesting to see if you can clean it up and get it running again.
