For those unaware, Steve is now in remission! So happy to see the treatment has been a success (not that I had any doubt you'd beat cancer's butt!) Much love to you and the family, Steve! God Bless
The news that Steve is in remission is fantastic news for Steve his family and us all, with the loss of Brian not too long ago, it sure would have been a hard pill to swallow if the news had been dire for Steve too.

Hey Steve, long time watcher, the reason I even know how to take apart consoles and ifixit advocator. I really want to thank you for not giving up and still filming despite the circumstances. A stranger just thanking you and telling to keep up the good work.
I can't believe you even have the energy to do these videos! I know how hard it was on my mom when she had cancer... and thankfully she has been in remission for over 12 years now. I loved reading that you are also in remission. Glad everything is working out the best it can, and I just wanted to say there is plenty of life to be lived after treatment. F--- cancer!
@tronicsfix - Steve, i'm so glad to hear about the remission! I am very glad that you are beating it! sending prayers and thoughts my friend to you and your family. i lost my dad a year ago to the cancer. i'm happy to see you beat it, and absolutely thrilled you are doing better. with the best wishes and love from the Meakers.
This really took me back. That laser adjustment was my very first console repair. I learned it in a magazine too! That’s for reminding me of such a wonderful memory. ❤
Retro consoles are.... soothing to me? They're from a time when manufacturers didn't go out of their way to make repairs harder than necessary. Just feels weirdly "wholesome".
Those are old consoles. Might have been put up in the attic years ago, now the kids have long moved out and the parents don't think they're worth anything anymore, so they end up at the dump. I was actually surprised they were defective, a lot of fully working consoles end up in the trash that way.
sadly maybe they dont wanna spend too much money fixing them because its not every day you can find an ethical fixer like tronics. Usually the electronics repair industry is filled with scams and overpriced service.
You should visit Germany, some neighborhoods toss out EVERYTHING and it's in perfect condition. Ever since Germany started selling awfully made tools and overall electronics for more then a decade the trashing became even more awful then before and it use to be a huge problem now it's a ocean of trash. They dont even sort or recycle anything most of it ends up as general trash. 5% goes to recycling, 5% goes back to China the rest ends up in landfills ...
that power port solder issue is extremely common on Model 2 Genesis, i was able to get multiple for $5 each several years ago and they all had that exact problem, my guess is the port isn't well braced by the shell so if the console is moved around or stored with the power cord left in it may crack the solder joint like you found.
It was so fun to see this bc my sister has a gensis and I remember sticking an eraser under the power cord to prop it up to keep it powered because it just wouldn't stay on with the cord hanging down. So cool to see it's just a loose solder joint! I have 0 solder experience but this seems like an easy one so if she ever mentions it maybe I'll see if I can fix it. It's probably in a box somewhere rn tho.
That’s the nice thing about those older consoles, the damn things just worked and failures were usually easy to fix. New consoles break if you look at them the wrong way.
Such a crime to see these in the dump. Always makes me smile when you bring these old consoles back to life. Love it and all the best with the rest of your treatment!
Hey Steve, just commenting to tell you congratulations to being on remission. I've just learned everything you went through, and I'm glad to know you went through it like a champ. You're an inspiration!! Much love from Argentina 🇦🇷❤
I forgot how relaxing was to watch your videos. Just saw your community post and, in the comments, that the treatment is going well. Hope it continues that way!
I love this. You have such an amazing way of explaining what you are fixing and why you are doing it. All at the same time learning with us. Thank you for these videos. It is much appreciated!!!
I LOVE that you took junk yard electronics and got them working with very minor repair! Classic example of why people should try to fix things instead of tossing them!
The VA2 is a pretty rare revision of the model 2 genesis. It was a pilot build for an alternate source ASIC from Toshiba, which is why it has the separate YM2612 (most Model 2s do not). A relatively small number of them were sold in a few regions of north america (seems like most ended up in eastern Canada) before they revised it to the VA2.3 which itself is not common either. The VA2.3 incorporates that clock fix that required all those mod wires and the mod board, but also completely changed the layout and it has much cleaner audio and video as a result. Unfortunately, most VA2.3s shipped with a defective ASIC that has broken shadow/highlight functionality.
I was looking more for the comments than the video itself, so glad you beat that, you're an example of positivism and perseverance during a tough time!
In all honest this is why I love to work on retro consoles. They are usually far easier to fix over complex modern systems from the past 14yrs. Also i'm glad to see that you're in remission and I hope you continue recover!!
Some people don't treasure old video games and treat them like obsolete technology! I remember I bought a Sega Saturn from a lady and she ended up giving me a bunch of other consoles, including one of these second generation Genesis console!
i recently picked up 20 super famicom controllers from japan, sold as parts. been fixing them up as i get free time. some of them are INCREDIBLY nasty with the shmoo inside haha! iso wasnt touching it, so i stuck all the plastic shells in very hot soapy water and let them soak, and then gave them a scrub with a toothbrush and a sponge. worked amazingly well, and fast vs the iso. thank you for repairing these old consoles! i love seeing this stuff repaired, or at the very least used for parts, instead of thrown away
I lost my ps-1(absolutely identical to this 1) due to repair masters not being able to look into it properly(it stopped showing image) even though it was with me for 8 years(even after i got pc) 😢 It's both nostalgic and magical to see u repair this piece of gaming history! Thanks for the upload and get better!
Thanks so so much. I saved all my old game stuff(much to my wife's dismay), and now with you educational videos, I've managed to repair alot of it and enjoy with my youngest. I really hope your treatment is going well so you can keep doing these wonderful videos 😅
My father in law gave me a box of “gaming stuff” last weekend, to my surprise, there was a mint gray PlayStation and an NES, both dusty but turned on, so I had high hopes. I’ve seen so many of Steve’s videos that I figured out what was wrong with it (jammed switch for the disc drive) within a few hours I had it clean and working. Thank you for these videos and glad you are doing better!
It's always so satisfying watching these old abandoned consoles breath new life. Well done Steve! I'm not sure if it's paranoia on my end, but would it not of been better to remove the old solder on that AC jack? Seeing the original break lines still, sort of sets me on edge.
Woot a new video on friday a great way to end the week. And hoping the best for your treatment tronicsFix! remember you health comes first before making new content.

Great fix on the systems, Steve! I just fixed a couple Genesises recently, both with similar issues (one with cracked solder joints on the power connector, and another with cracked solder joints on the AV port). Seems to be a common fault after years of abuse and neglect of these systems. But an easy fix, and an opportunity to save another system from the landfill. Well done!
First, congrats on remission, second every time you say at the end of your videos " let's see if I can fix it" I think we'll if you can't, no one can! 😊
I gave my grandson a laptop that I had stored away after his died...He complained that it kept getting hot and finally took it apart to see what was going on, it turns out that the heat sink was completely filled with fuzz/lint, whatever floats through a house with cats...It took him almost an entire day to get it cleaned out...I thought it was a small price to pay for a free Alienware m17...
Back in 2010 I bought a media laptop as at the time it was one of the few laptops that had an actual gpu in so I could play online games when travelling, it used to be around 60 degrees celcius idle on both cpu and gpu and kept shutting down even on 800x600 games of OG Counter Strike so rarely used it in the end, after about 4 years I found a cpu upgrade online and it was a socketed type of cpu and when I went to replace the cpu paste was basically a see through layer of what looked like toothpaste, and the gpu had none, that's right no paste on the gpu at all, I repasted them and the laptop went down to about 45 degrees idle for both and the laptop fans didn't go to full each time and I could have it on my lap without feeling like my legs were about to burn.
also the sega shorting jack is a common issue with model 2 and nomad consoles. i cant tell you how many times ive had to add extra solder to keep that jack from breaking
