Paul: I have done this with oak. I turn the shape and then go deeper for the illusion of the bands. I paint the bands black. Looks nice, but not as nice as yours with the copper. All the best from Petawawa, Ontario.
Very nice and unique idea. The bung is a wood plug, not copper. However...the copper sets off the overall color of the barrel. Thanks. Another project for me.
Thank you. You can certainly make a wooden bung if you prefer. Walnut would look nice against the oak. I used copper because I liked the look. Best of luck. Cheers, Paul
Fantastic video. One question I had, what RPM would you run copper at? Looking to make rings with a wood & copper sandwich but I also don't want to end up eating it. What are your thoughts?
I don't recall what RPM I was at, but with a ring being a smaller diameter you'd be able to go quite a bit faster anyway. It was pretty forgiving, and turned well at a pretty wide range of RPM. Couldn't go as fast as you could with just wood, but if you start at 800-1000 RPM, and sneak up on the optimal speed, you should get it dialed in without any problem. Sounds like a cool project!
So I tried to get some facts on hardness of copper vs oak. Not easily found but knowing how easily copper scratches compared to hardwoods its not surprising its cuttable with wood blades. This does open a tone of ideas. Copper and wood glue ups for picture frames for instance
Very good video. Good to see it on here with the toppers for sale. May I ask where you got that fence for the band-saw? I've been looking for one such as that one for a long time. Thanks
Hi Dennis, thanks for asking. It’s been awhile since I made this, but I would typically just turn it down as far as possible and then use a hand saw or whatever it takes to complete the removal, then sand.
Cool project! Saw the link from Vondriskaworks instagram and checked it out, glad I did. I’ve used copper for lathe tool handle ferrules, and I like to glue them on while it’s still on the lathe, so I can true up the exposed end and polish them. Looks sooooo nice. Questions, have you cut copper on a table saw, like you might aluminum? And what’s that push stick you were using on the band saw? Looks pretty nice!
Thanks Ben. I’ve cut copper on a table saw a couple times but not too often. Miter saw too. No problem. The push stick is pretty cool. I’ve been using it for 10+ years now. amzn.to/3I30TBS

Thanks for your nice comment. All best, Paul
Well done Paul! That turned out great. Carl even approved! 👍👍😉😉
Thanks, Steve. Yep, that's a pretty cool endorsement, and so is yours! Cheers, Paul
That's so cool, what a great idea!!
Thanks Carl! Was a fun experiment.
Pretty cool outcome. Great job
Thank you! Cheers!
Fun project, great presentation, and good length for a video.
Thanks Wakely.
Great job Paul....
Thanks, Jack
What a great idea.
Thanks 🙏
Such a great looking project.
Thanks Mark! 🙏

@@ToolMetrix The copper does make for good contrast to the wood. Where did you get the copper?
@knothead5 Amazon
good video and very informative, thanks
Thanks for watching, Scott. Cheers
Very nice!!
Thank you Max! 🙏
That's very cool
Thanks Ken 🙏

I love the combination of copper and wood. This was my first time turning it but I use it often for an accent on square projects.
It polishes up so nice on the lathe! Just make sure there’s some sort of finish on it, or just wax, so it doesn’t tarnish over time.

Thanks for sharing your feedback. The bandsaw is a Laguna 18bx and the fence is stock.
How did you remove the stopper from the other piece of wood and then finish that end?

Where did you get the copper?
Hi Mark, It's sourced in the description, but I see that it is currently unavailable in that size.

That looks sweet! It’s on my birthday wishlist haha. Really cool project, I’m going to try it for sure.
