Duel is the most fun I’ve had playing a fighting game in a couple years. I really enjoyed KOF and GGS a lot.. but there’s something about this game just being a get together for crazy busted weirdos. Everyone can do shit that is unfair and thats really great. The current fighting game landscape needed a game that’s like a fever dream, and this fits the bill. Really fun so far.
I wish Max would stop saying that Strive is dead for casual players. I find matches in parks very easily everyday and I'm not even a Celestial level player. Ranked can be empty at certain times of the day but that's fine, I just wanna hit rematch over and over and it works for that. DNF might also have the same longevity imo
Someone in his position needs to be conscious of what they say in those regards. Casuals listen to people like Max, Justin, and Sajam when they talk about these games. "Well Max says it's dead, no need to go back to it"
I can guess why he thinks this cause the last time he played it majorly outside of the day a DLC came out was Baiken, and even then (basing this off of Max’s history of videos considering I didn’t really watch his Baiken week videos when they released for some reason), he probably played a bunch of ranked with maybe a couple casual matches. But yeah, before saying something is “dead”, probably should ask around the community of some of the top players there if there’s a pulse there or is there mostly waiting in the lobbies/switching to ranked for matches. Even then, I’d consider it dead if it doesn’t pull like 25-50 viewers for locals or obviously the devs pull the plug and servers aren’t functional, so not really dead, but not as popular as at launch and it’s mostly the die hard fans now playing it. Not defending Max’s statement, just giving the potential thought process and agreeing that he should look some stuff up before making claims like this for people, like you said, him and 2 other TH-camrs they watch for fighting game stuff and influencing their thought process.
@@p0laris74yt8 I agree with almost everything else, but I think Twitch viewcounts are one of the worst ways people try to judge a game's popularity. For example, I once saw SFV with like 500 viewers-"dEaD gAmE aMiRiGhT?!?1"
I love the "answer" mentality of SFV. It makes me feel like I can pick any character and be competitive to some degree if that character really gels with how I want to play the game. Older games make you feel like if you aren't picking certain characters then you're going to have to work way harder in most matchups.
Awesome stuff as always form this podcast! I just wanted to point out one cause of misinformation @38:06 with the characters base classes. The actual base classes would be Slayer, Fighter, Gunner, and Priest. So essentially berserker is in the slayer subclass, striker=fighter subclass, Ranger & Launcher = gunner, and Sader = Priest. Just general information for those that may eventually be interested in the source game! No hard feelings and much love; Thank you for showing support of the game!
Btw watched future cops because of the fighting game movie ep you guys did, holy shit thank you so much for bringing that movie into my life. Could not believe I hadn't seen it before
Thank you Justin, Matt, and Maximilian for covering this fantastic game. I have been looking forward to this game since I started watching videos on the betas. It really spoke to me as a 90s arcade crawler. DNF Duel really does capture all of that bombastic classic 2D spectacle and play style of the fighting games of yesteryear making it show stopper even when casually walking by it. To your gentle-men's point, I did notice that I get a lot of "Bless you my son" and "The Lord giveth and taketh away" type of quotes after facing Crusader, surprisingly NOT so much when facing Inquisitor though. I like how DNF Duel really tries to the best job possible of representing most popular fighting game archetypes. Thanks to Rooflemonger's videos, I am really enjoying Striker and Grappler (so much so that I how have him [complete with wooden sign] as my Desktop wallpaper). I had hoped that there would be a nicer edition of this game available since I really want an art book for this beauty. Looking forward to the next episode and keep having fun making them.
I love DNF Duel and been playing it hard with Striker, Berserker, Kunoichi, Troubleshooter (Maximilian Dood), Dragon Knight, and Launcher. Personal favorites are Striker and Dragon Knight. It really definitely feels like BlazBlue 2.0 only a little bit more grounded towards Guilty Gear.
Downloaded this game before it was released then bought it. It is really really REALLY hard. Specially with my favorite character Striker. It's not fair to her. Her moves sometimes don't connect, slow evades and follow ups, low attack power and no projectiles. This character is my favorite character and the hardest to play with. This character needs to be reworked, tweaked, and finalized.
21:48 man I rather have answers and mess up that have nothing to do, last night every 7 out 10 players lock me out without nothing to do on DNF Duel... not a fun feel, and I'm just about in gold. Im playing an ok character (kuno) but now it feels that I have to learn just the highest top tiers to even play (berserk, hitman or crusader)
One good thing about survival mode is you can just run up to them or let them run up to you so you can grab them. While grabs aren’t really something you can rely on in earlier games like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter it almost always works well in this game
8ing was also behind the Japanese ps2 fighting game Fate Unlimited Codes which was also published by capcom and I think some of Wesker's playstyle was based off Kyrie and fun fact they share the same japanese voice actor
When Max says that, he means for himself. He doesn't play anymore. It's also the most played FG on Steam because everyone is stuck waiting to get into games. lol
Another great podcast! On the topic of regions having different patches, I'm Glad Max mentioned about PSO2 having to catch up with the Japanese versions too. We caught up pretty fast but the rush made us miss out on a chance to maybe get some of the stuff Japan got, also in case Matt is unaware the Japanese version even had cool stuff like a Godzilla costumes and lobby.
I'm enjoying DNF a lot, though it definitely helps that my favorite characters are on the more mobile side (Dragon Knight main, Swift Master secondary). I definitely wish it were at Evo, no question I'd watch every minute of that. For gameplay change wishes, more mobility across the board obviously. Ideally I'd like air blocking (and air throws to counter it), but I doubt that'll happen. More realistically, I'd say less recovery time/total duration on rolls, so that when you successfully roll something, you're more likely to get actually rewarded for it with a quick punish, even if only off a light attack (because as it stands, you very rarely get anything besides the space you moved from a roll). Balance-wise, obviously Swift Master needs numerous nerfs (I'd say start with his attack range and the mana cost of his tornado shield move). Crusader's wall too, and perhaps increasing the mana cost on his javelin move, which is insanely cheap for how strong it is. Safe dps need to go as well, so doing something about Hitman's in Awakening (just improving roll could fix this though, since you can roll his follow-up, he's just still safe if you do) and removing special cancels on block from Striker's. That'd be a great start to dealing with the most obviously absurd things in the game right now.
I play Dragon Knight, and my gameplan is now "get a hit, corner carry, and end combos at 50% health to hopefully skip their Awakening." The input reading fucks me up, though. I get a lot of accidental DP motions. I've lost rounds from running forward, inputting 214MS, and getting 623MS for some reason.
@@no_nameyouknow Air fireball is an important part of her neutral because it's one of her only two moves (the other being 236MP, the huge sword swing) that can compete with the game's other giant range moves. Her other moves are mostly pretty stubby, so until she's within like 20-25% of the screen away, those are her main tools. But her real gameplan is rushdown and mixups. Thanks to fly she's one of the few characters with real high/low mixups, and her corner combos are nuts and eat 40-50% of most characters' health easy. So what she really wants to do is get you cornered and then run the blender, getting one combo into mixup into death.
Honestly, DNF Duel is in my top 10 most favorite fighting games. There are plenty of fighters that I’ve opened myself up to these past couple years. Under Night In Birth. Guilty Gear. Blazblue. I didn’t think this would be one of them, but here we are. Cool roster with really well designed characters(most of them anyway). Great gameplay overall. Feels like a true, genuine fighting game that actually has passion put into it. And tbh, I dropped SFV for this. That game ain’t got nothin on DNF right now.
Grappler is probably more of what they would call a shooter in Japan. It's another word for fighter, I think. Think "GRAPPLER Baki" He's not REALLY a grappler more than he's a fighter.
The characters are such an interesting case. Their aesthetics and visuals are great, gorgeous even but it’s so jarring how they’re not really suppose to be unique characters but they’re not strictly self inserts either but instead just a mixed affair like having pre-made DnD characters. Sometimes it works out in a characters favour like mentioned here; Crusader is one of the most meme’d characters I’ve seen happened to a fighting game character despite not a single thing about his personality or story being highlighted of known. That entire 2 week period post reveal was some of the funniest shit I had seen, it was Glorious.
@@notimeforcreativenamesjust3034 to add to this its actually somewhat lore related and was done by design to detach a personality from the character so that the player can self insert more. All male rangers are empryan fugitives, all male slayers are swordsman with an arm infected by a demon etc etc. The awakenings focus the character a little more by choosing different awakening paths. A berserker embraces the demon and bloodlust, an asura blinds himself to suppress the demon and gain the ability to use waves, a weapon master wholly dedicates himself to the sword and banishes the demon. Every path is slightly different and let's you fulfill the rpg aspect of it more.
Korean MMOs still have that problem of the US version being way behind in patches. Black desert was pretty bad about it and lost ark is still far behind even the RU server

Been loving the show. For all the episodes is there a place where we can see what day it was actually recorded as opposed to released? Is it shown somewhere and I am just not seeing it?
I would honestly kill for Lost Ark to get the DNF Duel treatment. The one month I spent on that damn game, I seriously saw more potential with those characters as fighters than as dungeon crawlers...
Why are unlockables looked down on...thats how it used to be instead of everything behind a pay wall. Besides it gives you a reason to try the single player content. And its only 1 guy.
Because people want to lab day one instead of having to complete story mode/s. People think its annoying to unlock fighting game characters that way now, since if you don't like some characters and you HAVE to play them to unlock others people think it's not fun.
Unlockables are a double edged sword. On one hand, unlocking stuff through your own merits is fun and rewarding. On the other hand, sometimes you just want to pop a game in and play with a friend.
@@nicksrandomreviews But you can still do that, earning a character is exciting because thats more content available for just playing the game. And in that case, then let people spend $5 to unlock all characters with no work for those that cant spare time in single player.
Been loving what I've seen and played on the game on PC, but I feel its biggest flaw is not releasing on Xbox as well, most games are going multiplatform now and as much as I enjoy playing on PC, I have so many friends on Xbox who wish they could play it as well, and I want to play with them too. I was hoping that they'd make this one multiplatform but many friends lost interest immediately when it was confirmed that it wasn't
Arc has this hate boner for Xbox, have for a while now. The only ASW game on it is DBFZ. Which is a shame, since I, and likely many others, bought DBFZ on multiple systems. DNF Duel is a fine game. Bought it on PC. But Arc would have made way more money putting it on Xbox. I feel like it also might be due to the fact that they like putting crossplay in their games, and Sony is incredibly stubborn in regards to crossplay.
That's just a consequence of it being a smaller-name fighting game out of Japan. The X-Box has never been popular in Japan, so the only reason for them to bother with it is if they're a big enough name to expect a large international following, and outside of Dragon Ball (and maybe Persona Arena, if we ever get a P5A), ArcSys games just aren't, and with DFO being far more popular in Korea and other Asian countries than elsewhere, it was obvious DNF would be no exception.
@@Zevox87 I think with the Series S and X outpacing the PS5 in Japan, that will likely change. Its weird to me because its not like they haven't made Xbox versions of games that didn't get them in Japan. I mean, Xenoverse 2 got an Xbox version in the west, but was actually a PS4 exclusive for a little over a year in Japan. Hell, during the sixth gen, a lot of games that came out in the west on multiple systems, only came out on one in Japan. Budokai 2's vastly superior Gamecube port never released in Japan, so their memories of Budokai 2 are filled with spotty framerate, terrible interlacing, and weirdly dark colours. Just saying, there may not be market for DNF Duel on Xbox in Japan, but there is outside of Japan.
It's funny that modern fighters are all so rock paper scissors given how much the FGC trashes DOA, which has one of the best designed rock paper scissors mechanics and practically pioneered that design in fighters
DoA isn't trashed because of its mechanics. It's trashed because of literally everything else. Nobody gets deep enough into DoA's mechanics to complain.
The more I play this game, the more it feels like HnK. Ghostblade is the only character that clicks with me, but the combo system in DNF is so organic that I can't not love it. 8ing still rules.
Man, can't disagree with Max's view more. This game is very much about specific answers, and combined with the four different comeback mechanics, it's a large factor in me bouncing off of the game. The rock paper scissors in DNF is very rigid, much more so than Strive with its RC system or MK11 with its custom loadouts and flawless blocks.
I went in with zero hype for DNF Duel. In fact, I would say from the trailers, all the gameplay, all the coverage, I think I kind of hated it. It just looked so average. But then the other day, I noticed I had too much money, and decided to buy it on Steam. I was wrong. I was expecting an Arc System Works game, which I tend to not like, but no... it is 8ing through and through. Everything about it harkens back to 8ing's work on everything from Bloody Roar, to TvC, and even the surprisingly good Kamen Rider games they did on the PS2 and Wii. Its so damn fun, and it feels like a fighting game sandbox.
Yeah, probably cuz Matt didn't really play the game so there's only so much two people can talk about it before things get repetitive. Kind of wish they would have delayed the episode so all three of them could actually be engaged, but ah well.

"Guilty Gear Strive has no staying power" We can't play the game properly. "Connecting to server" takes a while. Lobbies are awful. "Failed to connect" happen all the time. We lose so much time ranking and deranking from stupid lobby floor. There is no crossplay yet. We want DNF Duel ranked matchmaking. I played 350 matches in 3 days with DNF Duel. I can't do it with KOF XV, SFV, or GGS that make me lose my time instead of letting me play the game with people.
Personally that horrendous beta turned me completely off from every wanting to touch the game again…. it was that bad. From the lobby system to the immensely repetitive title screen music it just all really turned me off. I thought once the game releases my views would change but they just didn’t even after they began to basic modes and when they started to show off more “characters”. By “characters” I mean the random mash up of anime character designs that have basically little to no personality outside of cool looking moves and okay looking specials. In fact they don’t even have names which gave me a big function fighter vibe and still do. Hard to attach yourself to these “characters” when they are named after literal descriptions (grappler). The designs are also not consistent overall as the roster seems like it was just pulled from an Instagram artist’s gallery with no consideration to how the “characters” work together on a roster or u know a story or u know at the bare minimum unique character to character dialogue (these guys made mvc3 btw). Hey atleast some of them use swords or kicks? …. The artwork quality of these “characters” is also fantastic but the designs of those “characters” are just all over the place and with the lack of any real personality from these “characters”it just feels like a bunch of designs tossed into a game or as some call it an rpg …. But in fighting game form ….. the type of game that excels characters and their personalities …. Minus the personalities of the characters …. This should have just been another marvel game tbh it would have been more beloved and successful.
Not really upset or mad at the game to be honest just a little disappointed? I was willing to give it a shot since I really liked strive but yeah it is what it is I guess 🤷🏻
@@sloppychlow9329 It's... it's literally the video game that you're shitting on. Are you serious? All of these character designs are pulled from DFO, so if there's any issues with their designs it's solely on that game. I've honestly never seen such a bad take before. I'm kind of stunned.
I'm sure this game is real fascinating to some people, but I just do *not* care at all for this game. Looks like a Guilty Gear-lite in everything but the worldbuilding.

For the simple fact that we live in an era when everyone has something, anything, to complain about
@@Lunaria.Praesentia Man....truth fucking hurts lmao
When any game trades on online multiplayer for longevity you'd think platform agnosticism and crossplay would be an easy and early decision to make.
Man this is the game where everyone is so OP that no one is OP lol.
Wait it's OUT out... Guess i just thought that demo was getting a lot of love lol
We have have a main every class in DNF except the female Slayer. I smell DLC potential.
"imagine if you had to wait for (the international version to catch up to the Japan version) nowadays"
I can see Matt doesn't play mobile games much
The more I play this game, the more it feels like HnK.
Ghostblade is the only character that clicks with me, but the combo system in DNF is so organic that I can't not love it. 8ing still rules.
Fist of the North Star?

I really like the game but i think im about to drop this i just cant catch a break with this game very discouraging
I had no idea there was an expert input

Dnf duel is 1 character marvel 3
All games
Melty Blood at EVO!!!
someone needs to help Justin sort the focus on his camera.
LETS GOOOO SWIFT MASTER GAMING TIME!!!!
Short ep today
Yeah, probably cuz Matt didn't really play the game so there's only so much two people can talk about it before things get repetitive. Kind of wish they would have delayed the episode so all three of them could actually be engaged, but ah well.
@@ThatsGoodToast1 The actual reason is Justin needed to make a flight.
@@triplek.o.2192 Oh yeah, this was filmed probably right before con stuff huh? Fair enough!

I love you max I do but there’s no way in hell that you actually use honey. Haha my guy is a millionaire and if he isn’t he’s gotta be close. I mean get your money man but damn I just don’t see it is all.
He actually talked about this recently during a yovideogames stream.
Pretty much he is saying that when you grow up without much money, and go to college where you really have to save money, the habits don't really go away. So even though he has a lot of money know, he still scrounge and saves.
@@phabiorules that’s good to hear I don’t watch the streams really ever mostly just TH-cam. I mean I just don’t see him being like alright grab the coupons let’s go food shopping is all. In all honesty honey is just a tool right? So if a pop up comes then he could go to that suggestion instead. And I looked it up he’s worth 6.6 mil. I do really love his personality though he’s very down to earth for a rich guy and it is obvious that he’s self made and not a POS like jake Paul or something. I just don’t see him clipping coupons and being excited for prime day is all.

Ok? Idk I wouldn’t call wearing a old t-shirt and shorts homeless. Listen I’m not saying he should look better or dress better or something like that wear whatchu want king. All I’m saying is that when he needs or wants something I doubt he’s searching high or low for the best price and I seriously doubt he’s got a bunch of coupons clipped out of ads to buy his groceries that week.
Fuckin' LegacyofKaiser man lmao. I had to put his weird thristy ass on the blacklist.Got tired of seeing his videos recommended more than match or tech videos.
"Guilty Gear Strive has no staying power"
We can't play the game properly.
I would buy this if it was on Xbox.
This is episode 19...
i hate that none of them really play grappler to know that all of his armored moves lose to low attacks
I was willing to give it a shot since I really liked strive but yeah it is what it is I guess 🤷🏻
sounds like you just don't like DNF
@@MoojinBoi I don’t even know what dnf is so I guess your right ?
@@sloppychlow9329 It's... it's literally the video game that you're shitting on. Are you serious?
All of these character designs are pulled from DFO, so if there's any issues with their designs it's solely on that game.
I've honestly never seen such a bad take before. I'm kind of stunned.
@@_Jay_Maker_ what is dfo?
I'm sure this game is real fascinating to some people, but I just do *not* care at all for this game. Looks like a Guilty Gear-lite in everything but the worldbuilding.
