Chris Tang here (former Atari/Capcom designer, Primal Rage I/II/SFIII3s etc.) - This is one of the best podcast episodes I've ever experienced, period. Having Doc on and tell these stories and the history of the ever growing best arcade in the universe had me smiling ear to ear nonstop - and I loved hearing all your reflections on how arcades really were back in the day! Just wanted to mention about the special move inputs on Primal Rage 1; I had been kicking and screaming for them to simplify inputs from early in development but those with more influence in the team doubled down on the "we need to be different" route and only allowed positive edge inputs starting from 2.0 as a concession. I never stopped screaming about it because I knew it was hurting the game's playability - especially for our core audience of casuals and kids who just want to bang on stuff and get moves to come out. It took when the game did poorly on test in Japan that they finally gave in for 2.3J ; there were no Japanese designers - that was me! (but I'll take that as a compliment from Doc!) XD Oddly the version on Midway Arcade Treasures 2 for PS2/XB uses the 2.3J standardized inputs so it really is the definitive way to play PR1. Thankfully getting those inputs the way I wanted wasn't a problem for Primal Rage II, but that was of course, unfortunately cancelled :/. Now, thanks to the efforts of Doc and content like this episode, the game can be played and the stories about it be shared. Thanks so much for this episode, it really made my week, and I hope that when Capcom Fighting All-Stars shows up at GGA, I'll get to be there too!
As someone who lives in Illinois and has been going to the Galloping Ghost with friends for years now, it's so awesome to see them getting the recognition they deserve. It really is like a history museum of arcade games, and I look forward to going back for years to come!
@NHParadox I would say so. It was always pretty busy whenever I went, however, that was also pre pandemic. I'm not sure currently, but I would hope so.
Seriously! I re-watched that clip from 52:31 several times. I would say he either has the game already in the back or is about to have get it. I think we'll be seeing it in a mystery game Monday soon.
Back in 2017 I traveled from the Netherlands to Chicago for Mortal Kombat 25th anniversary. Daniel Pesina picked me up from the airport and drove me straight to GGA were I met Doc and other MK fans. Had such an awesome time. Doc also organized the 25th anniversary of MK at Kombat Kon. Best times of my life. He also signed my MK2 banner with the rest of the MK cast 🔥🔥
51:13 I was thinking that if they ever hit the 1000 games mark, they should upgrade to more floors. Not just for bigger games like House of the Dead 4 Special, but also to just free up more space on the main floor. In both my experiences going to GGA some places it's pretty tricky to navigate, and certain machines are just unfortunately blocked off by others. Hope it's feasible! I'm so jealous of the kid Doc mentioned that has been going to the arcade ever since the age of 11 when it first opened up, and is now in his twenties and still visits the place... I wish the arcades I went to as a kid could've stayed open for that long. :/ GGA is a goddamn national treasure and ever since I first went to Chicago it's been my must-go for every trip there. Last year I went on my second trip and I tried playing more games than I did on my first visit, but it's still pretty tiring trying to get through so many games. XD
This interview came up at the right time, man. I just finished Bastich B 64K's 10 hr. epic documentary about the history of arcades ("Arcades: The Universal Language - Director's Cut"), which only brings me to appreciate a place like Galloping Ghost Arcade more after seeing it. Shoutouts to Doc and the crew at GGA, I hope to visit someday and that you cats continue to thrive. The work is appreciated; great ep, fellas.
I'm in the suburbs of Chicago so I've got easy access to GG, but I only ever went once for a friend's birthday party, probably over 12-13 years ago. I'm thinking it's time I go for another visit
The guy so passionate after all that years i respect him glad they ve survived after pandemic. Wish i have a place like GG because like Max said in 90s most of arcades not safe for children and parents biased about it. You can't break it . I 'm not living in NA , hope they will keep what they are doing
Galloping Ghost is amazing. I'm from the west coast, but I go to Chicago every year for a convention and I make sure to stop by. It's incredible seeing so many rare arcade machines in one spot.
I finally made it to Galloping Ghost! My little brother and I had the times of our lives. It was glorious. We made friends! We played games that we hadn't seen in decades and some we didn't know existed. I hope to go again some day, but just getting to see that place once feels like a privilege. Legendary.
I feel once I finally make the trek back to Illinois, once me and my friend reach Galloping Ghost we'll be like Thanos at the end of Infinity War. We can finally smile while we watch the sunrise knowing we went to the greatest arcade in the world. Another banger episode!
Great podcast with Doc Mack!! A few of us Home Arcade TH-camrs visited GGA last year in September and Doc was an amazing host and let us ride the R360. Between the amazing main arcade and dedicated pinball arcade down the street, it's too much to do it all in 1 day! I need to spend a whole vacation for several days to get the most out of it. Look forward to going back some day!
Aw MAN! I was in Illinois for the holidays and we specifically tried to find the best arcades in Chicago, but we just had to go off of what we found on Google. Round 1 and Nickel City were both amazing in their own ways, but if I had KNOWN about Galloping Ghost? BAH! Now I've gotta pretend to want to visit family again to get another chance.
Sounded like Doc has the Capcom Fighting All Stars arcade, just waiting for its turn to be unveiled. Maybe you guys can do a fan meetup while Triple KO is there.
I grew up in the early 2000s and managed to catch the tail end of the arcade era. My local mall had a arcade that spaned 3 rooms. This was my first exposure to fighting games, with Marvel vs Capcom being my first game. The arcade was right by the food court and on weekends the place was always packed. The arcade was removed around 2006 and the mall was never the same after that. The area that used to host the arcade would remain vacant. The area and food court are currently being torn down.
My company sent to our Chicago office a few years ago, and I made for damn sure I set aside some time to get out to Brookfield to visit Galloping Ghost. Truly a gaming Mecca. I wish I could have stayed for 4 hours more. I nearly got the high score on Samurai Shodown II! Missed it by only 2000 points or so!
My 2014 trip from Saudi to chicago was delightful , and GGA was easily on top 3 highlight of that trip , spend more than 5 hours on the place , it was magical
I loved this episode! I've never been to GGA but I'd love to visit it one day! Hearing the guys and Doc talk arcades and their experiences with them was so entertaining to listen too!
I'm glad that y'all took the time to do this interview with the man behind the arcade I've come to love since 2010. Being a local here I've kinda pretty much grew up going to this arcade. I was 13 when they opened now I'm 25 today and this is my second home. I also run fur meets over there once a month and started those in 2018 so it's definitely worth going to this arcade and to have fur meets here or a gathering with friends and family! 100% recommend! Doc is a good guy and his staff is awesome too!
Big picture the fighting game community is rather niche. Even more so some regional/local arcades. Props for you to put the spotlight on those and the passionate people that run them. After listening to the pod, I absolutely will check out that one next time I am in the region!
I was following Dark Presence for the longest time. It always felt like a crazy production and some of the early planned features like shock bracelets and a reward box were hopelessly naive. It came across as some kind of investor scam to cash in on the MK hype at the time, and as time moved on it looked completely outdated. But at this point it feels admirable just for the tenacity of trying to get this game made for 30 years. If and when it does come out, I hope it gets some kind of digital release so I can finally get to try Vamphyrial and Veil. In either case, the GG arcade is a marvellous achievement, so whatever happens with the game, GG has made a great effort in video game history.
Great episode. I got to know Doc Mack since opening day of Galloping Ghost Arcade. At the time I used to live about 10 minutes from the arcade but now it takes me about an hour. The one thing Doc left out since you guys love the retro arcade scene, GGA has developed a fighting game circuit called the Bloody Wars Tournament where people come to compete in different fighting games with the champion holding the Bloody Wars title. And also to Justin Wong, you said you were going to go after the Marvel vs Capcom 2 score. Well that score runs through me as I am the current house high record holder. 😁
I was just there a little bit ago and they got their 1000th cabinet! I love that place, I got obsessed with their House of the Dead machine and I’ve never looked back. Crazy taxi, initial D 1, a whole street fighter lane, neogeo stuff, bullet hell room, and they added like two rooms. It truly is the entire block. It looks like 4-5 businesses but the whole building is just them. Crazy cool and one of the best places I’ve ever been
From California, I was in Indy for training and I drove to the Galloping Ghost. It was amazing. It is like a museum for video games! I can't wait to go again.
This whole video give me hope. I've been wanting to start my own arcade. I stopped thinking it was possible because of how everything has been these few years. but maybe I still have a chance
I'm so excited about you guys having a guest! It seems like there is so much potential to hear from people who come from a different fighting game background than even you three. I would be stoked if you guys had an episode on anime fighters and their place in the overall scene and I think having someone like LordKnight could bring an interesting perspective
Every time I go to Galloping Ghost is just pure magic. I find new stuff to try out each time that blows my mind. And can you say you've been to GG if you haven't sweat out 3 pounds in the SHMUP room?
Ghalloping Ghost and Logan Arcade are really awesome in IL - Logan Arcade (in chicago) has a MK and Street Fighter 3rd strike scene, they hold monthly gatherings
I've been meaning to go to Galloping Ghost for years now with my buds. We all live like an hour away from Chicago, so it wouldn't be a crazy drive or anything like that.
I have been wanting an arcade in Columbia, MD and now we finally got one, I want more Arcades to open up in Maryland that has the same passion and amount of games as Galloping Ghost
Galloping Ghost was recommended to me the last time I was in Chicago, but I had a last second gig pop up and wasn't able to go. I'm in the Midwest, so I really wish this high speed rail they keep proposing actually happen to allow impromptu afternoon trips to Chicago and back.
The holy grail of arcade games is the 1990 version of Galaxian 3. It was a cylinder that sat 28 players and was basically a theme park attraction. One was made and it shut down in 2000.

I have a friend that sells arcade machines he flips and sells (has his own arcade now!) that I've helped move these cabinets and they're no joke! It's hard work but so worth it after we're done setting everything up.
There's an indie game called Deathball that would do well there. The creator sells custom cabinets for like 6 grand and it's currently the only way to actually get the game. Pretty much any room where people gather in general should have a Deathball cabinet in it.
The first time we went to galloping ghost, I didn’t tell my wife where we were going. I remember opening the door and the kids realized what is was and went nuts, I looked back and my wife had the most unenthusiastic look on her face!
I wish doc Mac could convince the people of Gulfport to build a arcade down here that would be awesome we could put a wrestling ring in and everything lol after Katrina we don't have anymore
I'm so confused. I live in Buffalo New York and when I was younger there was a place called docs fun center and it had the EXACT arcade business model that this doc is speaking of. It was an amazing place sounds exactly like the one your describing except it's on the opposite end of the country!?!? Is this like Buffalo docs son or something wtf!
all the arcades around me are more bars than arcades, its a bummer. even if the place does have a fighting game, no one is there to play it lots of fun to get drunk and play NFL blitz with strangers, not as much to drunkenly play alpha II by yourself while katy perry blasts in the background
Dude, I follow both Max and Justin, (and more recently, Matt as well) but had no idea this podcast even existed until now! It’s fine to plug your other projects every now and then, y’know? Just like the asking for likes thing.

Lol you are a legend bro
Grew up with midway arcade treasures 2 so hearing about weird inputs confused me cause I didn’t remember it being weird and now I know why
As someone who lives in Illinois and has been going to the Galloping Ghost with friends for years now, it's so awesome to see them getting the recognition they deserve. It really is like a history museum of arcade games, and I look forward to going back for years to come!
Same! And I drive all the way from Michigan for it! Gotta make a full day of it.
would you say it has a lot of traffic and they're doing okay moneywise?
@NHParadox I would say so. It was always pretty busy whenever I went, however, that was also pre pandemic. I'm not sure currently, but I would hope so.
Doc is one hell of a cool dude. I hope I get to visit galloping ghost someday.
Yeah. Me too.
As a Chi-Town boy, I love seeing Galloping Ghost get its credit. Truly a Holy site of gaming, Thanks for everything Doc.
I hope Doc gets a hold of Capcom Fighting All Stars just to get all of Triple KO over to Galloping Ghost!
He did say they had a deep vault , so who knows ....
I did notice Doc having a shit-eating grin on his face when Matt and Max mentioned Capcom Fighting All Stars. :D

52:38 oh boy oh boy OH BOY!
If you're a gamer period, you need to make a pilgrimage to Galloping Ghosts

18:45 the Justin Wong story callback. A now classic.
Great guest! Doc seems like chill af dude. Definitely need to go to GGA, been on my list for a while now
I FUCKING LOVE THE GALLOPING GHOST
Always love going up to Galloping Ghosts, it's just an hour drive for me and everytime I go I play until my wrists hurt lol
I'm in the suburbs of Chicago so I've got easy access to GG, but I only ever went once for a friend's birthday party, probably over 12-13 years ago. I'm thinking it's time I go for another visit

This man is a legend 🙌🏼✊🏽
This man is a legend. The John Hammond of Arcades.
But with slightly fewer deaths at his establishment!

Not Dragunov being a real life arcade owner lol
I loved this episode! I've never been to GGA but I'd love to visit it one day! Hearing the guys and Doc talk arcades and their experiences with them was so entertaining to listen too!
I’ve had the honor of having galloping ghosts 5 minutes away from me for years
Epic podcast! Gotta go to the galloping ghost arcade asap, such a paradise on earth with all those games

Been going there since I was a sophomore in high-school and I'm 28 now
I live in the area, and have been going to the arcade since 2012, it's well worth it every single time. Highly recommend.
Im lucky enough to have a local arcade that brings in a lot of people
Wow, I love 40 min from this place and never heard of it! Definitely checking it out.
From California, I was in Indy for training and I drove to the Galloping Ghost. It was amazing. It is like a museum for video games! I can't wait to go again.
I was planning on going there the first time this friday! Perfect timing. Can't wait!
The Galloping Ghost is awesome, I wish it and the crew all the best. Arcades hold a special place in my heart and I will for sure visit one day

Just started getting hardcore into fighting games recently and just now discovered this podcast, now I got a catalogue of stuff to listen to at work
I always have the same dream, i take a walk inside an Arcade. You are so lucky to have a place like that
SUPER awesome episode. Was really cool getting to hear about Doc's experiences and stuff.
33:24 I'm sorry, but did he said mother-effin Tom Brady, the GOAT of football, gifted him Primal Rage 2?!
their smash team back in the day use to be the best in the midwest! great times
That place sounds SICK, I need to go at some point
Hell yeah! GG is DOPE!!
Every time I go to Galloping Ghost is just pure magic. I find new stuff to try out each time that blows my mind. And can you say you've been to GG if you haven't sweat out 3 pounds in the SHMUP room?
Would absolutely love to go one day soom
Ghalloping Ghost and Logan Arcade are really awesome in IL - Logan Arcade (in chicago) has a MK and Street Fighter 3rd strike scene, they hold monthly gatherings
I'm stuck in the middle of bumfuck nowhere in Canada. I wish I could go there.
good to hear Matts Dad is good
This was one fun ass listen. Thanks for having Doc on the podcast. Very insightful and informative. Glad I got to hear it
I've been meaning to go to Galloping Ghost for years now with my buds. We all live like an hour away from Chicago, so it wouldn't be a crazy drive or anything like that.
Definitely going to make a trek to GGA at some point. Sounds like a magical place.
At that point isn't it just a ride then?
@@Neronova888 they also made paired down versions for arcades, but that original installation has never been recreated. It would actually be groundbreaking news if someone manages to make it again.
YOOOOOOOOO!!! DOC MACK!!!!
Every time I go, I gotta play through Ninja Baseball Batman at least once.
Triple KO live from GGA
you miss the most important galactic thing about arcades, the arcade era was super exciting because back then arcades had exlusive games and all games had a next gen graphics and sound system. That's why when you played your shitty NES and SNES games and visiting arcades you were dropped in alien world. Now best of the best games are at home.
great episode!
As someone whose dream it is to open an arcade, this episode is really inspiring and gives me hope that it can be done still
Get Kitptoe to do a mural!
That would be so damn cool and people will love looking at it
Providing you have a big brick wall
Or even 10hundred would be happy to do a mural!
The city will probably like that more than signs
Yo, if you’re ever there play “The First Funky Fighter” It’s a badass take on whack-a-mole
I live 5 mins away and i used to go every Thursday and just enjoyed taking in the scenery. Now i live in tx and man i miss going
I haven't been there since 2019. I miss that place
I live in the chicago area but I've NEVER been able to go there!!! my parents never let me do cool shit...
I have a friend that sells arcade machines he flips and sells (has his own arcade now!) that I've helped move these cabinets and they're no joke! It's hard work but so worth it after we're done setting everything up.
I'm so lucky to be a 30 minute drive from GG
I wish the northeast had an arcade like this, would love to go one day
920 games beats my mame collection, this is impossible captain
He has to come from serious wealth or something. You can't obtain that insane of an arcade collection without having a big bank beforehand.
such an interresting episode! Doc's stories were super fun to listen to
No one even mentioned Mortal Kombat Nitro Edition? Wow! 😢
Fun fact: Oakland, Ca still has pinball machines banned.
Im honored to not be too far from this great place
This place sounds amazing, I hope I'll ever get a chance to visit it!

I gotta go to this place eventually
I blame the Arcades = gangs from the movie TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES. Menthol or regular????
anyone know of a similar kind of arcade around Orlando? sounds so fun but I don't think there's anything like it near me

Dude, I follow both Max and Justin, (and more recently, Matt as well) but had no idea this podcast even existed until now! It’s fine to plug your other projects every now and then, y’know? Just like the asking for likes thing.
All three plug them regularly on their YT community pages and Twitter every single time a new episode releases.
