I used to run a yearly tournament at a comic and game store I worked at. We called it the IronMan of Gaming and it would feature games of a bunch of different genre and generations and have challenges and point awards for winning or beating challenges. At the end of the night we'd take the top 4 and do a mystery final set of challenges with secret games. The final challenge the last time we did it was a 4 man free for all in Onimusha Blade Warriors. Winner got $250 store credit.

I am with Justin on this one. SvC Chaos is a looot more fun than what I remember. I came back to it recently and the core gameplay is so punchy I love it. But yeah SnK dropped the ball for making literally half of the roster hidden characters. Thankfully those "plus" versions exist. I also hope for SNK to authorize Code Mystics to give SvC Chaos some kind of UM treatment

  • @Jeffmetal42

Thank you Justin for actually seeing the good in SVC Chaos. I have a soft spot for that game, the sprites are just soooooo damn good. For a game that was made during SNK going bankrupt, I think it has a lot of charm to it and could have been waaaay worse.

I actually looked up some Criticom stuff and was shocked to see that there actually is something in there, you do have special moves, your characters level up, gain new moves and change appearance as they go through the arcade ladder. But that's really all there is, and as the videos from Max and Matt showed getting those special moves to come out is nearly impossible.

Mortal Kombat Vs. DC is a an easy one to throw in there.
Not even because of the general things people complained about the game like the lack of gore with Mortal Kombat being attached to it but because of how unnecessarily complicated that game’s version of EX’s worked and the Rage mechanic cause since it lets you armor through actually everything no matter what you’re doing, that means a few seconds of a match can be spent by one player popping Rage and the other backing away hoping they can last long enough until the Rage goes away, ya know, provided that person isn’t playing a character with the tools to very easily catch people who do that.
Honestly to me that’s the the thing that ruins MK Vs. DC more than anything cause before you play the game long enough to think of the Rage mechanic, it can actually be goofy dumb fun, but it’s very easy for the Rage mechanic to bring the pace of a match to a screeching halt and that’s what kills the gameplay in my opinion.

  • @Goufunaki
    @Goufunaki 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Kakuto Chojin is Tobal 2, minus the grapple system and quest mode. If you take the time to play the Chojin move sets (unlocked after completing the game as a character), there's a lot of fun combos to figure out. My main issue with the game would be the lack of content. I just wish Dream Factory had more time to work on it.

Maybe I'm wrong (pretty sure I'm not), but having been around the block on the Unity Asset Store the characters in Fight(!) are from the "PBR Fighters Pack" by artist Maksim Bugrimov. It's like their cheapest character pack. I have little doubt the animations also all come from a single asset pack though I can't be bothered to watch gameplay to see if I know off the top of my head.

As Justin correctly said, we, Dragon Ball fans of the '90s, were able to play every shit with DBZ licence on it at the time. I played a lot of Dragon Ball Z Ultimate Battle 22. I didn't like it at all as a fighting game, it was much worse than the DBZ fighters released before on SNES and MD, still... I had it imported from Japan and played a shit ton of it. Same for Dragon Ball Z Legends (this was the one with 3 on 3 fighting, not UB22) and GT. Dark times, for sure 😅

As someone who’s dabbled in bad fighting games, I will always say my top 3 worst fighters are:
Battle Master (not the Gundamn games) is a fighting game that you first have to figure out how to do one on one fights, realize your have to earn the fighters and there are only 4 or 5 fighters total. On top of that there’s some weird leveling up system in which you build your mech to get the true end. It’s…. It’s so bad!!! (Fighting eyes and FIST are the other two lol )

I (like Justin) have been a victim of bad anime IP games (especially on Super Famicom) and although I have played all of the Dragon Ball related ones, NONE are as bad as Hokuto No Ken 6 in which all of the characters play the same with 1 unique special move each. The sequel was slightly better with a Vs mechanic and added a different finisher to each character but was still very minimal for a fighting game.

Rise of the robots is the worst fighting game (that is not an indie, mobile or portable one). You can't even jump over and cross up your opponent, terrible animations, clunky controls, useless normals, even worse and pointless special moves, exploitable AI. And it has no excuse, it came around the same time as "2nd generation" fighting games like Darkstalkers and King of fighters 94. What the hell...
You couldn't do a game that bad if you tried.

    • @Millenium-Mige
      @Millenium-Mige 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Fun fact: when Rise came out onto it's original platform (Amiga), British game magazines pretty much destroyed their credibility by giving it really high scores across the board. Why? The arrival of Edge who praised Rise to high heavens led the publisher demand positive press via contracts. Amiga Power was the only magazine who said no and had to wait until the release. Their score , a 5 out of 100, made everyone else look like a bunch of liars.

  • @jesterje

Lol. Is it crazy that my first experience realizing I was playing a bad fighting game was when I was playing a good fighting game? I was playing DBFZ online and the connections are SO BAD lol. Especially on Xbox. I mean I haven’t played it in a a minute so maybe it’s better but you would wait 30 min for a match, it would be 10+ frames of delay, you would lose the connection on the second fight. Lol. I hope that roll back eventually fixes it.

Kabuki Warriors is not that bad of a game but it is rather basic as there is not much outside of one attack button, a few throws, rolling, and taunting to gain money. It's actually OK but nothing special, I don't get why reviews back then gave it such low scores when there is a lot worse.
Kakuto Chojin is definitely a game Matt should cover as I think it's one of the most underrated 3D fighters out there as the mechanics are actually solid since it was made by DreamFactory so most of the mechanics that Tobal, Ehrgeiz, and The Bouncer had was carried over to Kakuto Chojin with a neat movement, and combo system.

One fighting game I played that was just weird was Rock'em Sock'em Robots for the Playstation. This game was like some strange 3D Mortal Kombat game where you could literally rip your opponent's limbs by attacking it a bunch. The controls were pretty jank, and you could spam moves a bunch. One of the characters felt really broken.

Matt's reaction at 12:28 is pretty much the same reaction I made just now, Jesus lol. I used to own Shaq Fu on my Genesis and I absolutely despised that game (I got it bundled with Comix Zone at the end of the Genesis's life at retail).

SVC Chaos plus had the hidden characters unlocked. Those are available on the normal game via code though.

Rise of the Robots was the first game I thought of too. I think after that it would be Black Hole Assault on the Mega CD. Not a great game but the hidden Pong like game called Black Ball Assault is really addictive.

Flying Dragon (in NES) was my first encounter to a fighting game. Now I think back it was kind of bad, but I had a ton of fun. The funny thing is when its your first fighting game, you don't know what to expect, it's all new. So regardless of how bad it is, its still great at the time.

Shaq fu was good and bad at the same time. Characters were great, moves were wanky but the stages were nice. It had a weird feel to it but I enjoyed it in 1990 something.

    1. This podcast is excellent! Keep up the great work.
    2. Respectfully you guys are wrong about Onimusha Blade Warriors 🤣. It is a pretty good time with friends, has a ton of characters with multiple endings, forms and costumes, there are hidden levels and even some expanded lore sprinkled in. It has problems but me and my friends played it for at least 100+ hours when it released lol.
    3. Ironically I also loved X-Men Next dimension amd sunk a hundred hours in with friends as well. 🤣 so maybe I'm wrong

63 1/3... I knew it was bad, it got rated bad...
But, seeing it in adverts in games magazines priced so cheaply just made me want it, just to bulk up that collection a bit.

See I actually own all of the clayfighter games, including sculptors cut, and I grew up with them BECAUSE they were so cheap and I wasn’t allowed to play Mortal Kombat, Clayfighter was trash, BUT it got 5 releases and there were several attempts to revive the series but it kept getting kneecapped but it’s own company trying to lower costs, tournament edition is decent fun, and there’s a fan hack called ultra clayfighter tournament edition, and it’s actually really good. Just one of those cases where it could’ve been something, and then it wasn’t. Lol

The first trash fighting game I remember playing in my life....Hold on to your time machines....Dino Wars on the Radio Shack TRS-80. The TRS was short for Trash. It was T-Rex vs T-Rex. But this was a time when individual pixels were like fist sized on a 12" screen. And all the T-Rex's did was yell at each other. It can be played against the computer or a friend. Me and my cousins never figured out why some roars knocked down while others had no apparent effect.
Pit Fighter on Snes is a fighting game??? I only ever played the arcade and Genesis versions. Those were beat'em ups.

Lol my first time playing Toshinden was in a Circuit City back in the day. When I saw that old man walk on the spirit bomb I was like yo this game is legit. I also really liked Shaq Fu, just because I thought the animations were so clean, and I thought the special moves were sick. Seemed like it was hard to execute specials, but I chalked that up to me just being trash, and I never owned it. I only played it at other people's houses so I didn't get to practice as much as I wanted to.

Pit-Fighter is more like a brawler or wrestling game, or other player vs computer fighting games developed before SF2. The design has more DNA with the other Atari games or Midway games. The American arcade style at the turn of the decade. It was attractive but never very interesting. It's more like a brawler as well, and there's a follow-up which is just a brawler. It was absurdly common; it was the highest grossing arcade game of 1990
The SNES game was a terrible conversion, presumably to get to market quickly. It's barely playable.
