I have incredibly fond memories playing through legend of Mana with my cousin decades ago. We've drifted apart, but this game always reminds me of those days. Coincidentally I played through this game to 100% completion last year when the pandemic just started. It's great. The artstyle is timeless. Yoko Shimamura's music here is amazing and one of her best work. I agree with this review, it's about a 6 or 7. It's definitely showing its age. Although not as popular as Secret of Mana or as much a cult classic as Seiken Densetsu 3, it is still at it's core a Mana game. And a damned good one at that. The story is more like a collection of fairy tale stories rather than one big saga. RPGs had the bad habit of showing rather than telling at the time, only to "tell" the rest of the story in Japan exclusive artbooks. You can still reasonably piece together the general plot of the game, and intuiting a few things is half the fun. It's a solid game. With a hands off approach to progression. Stick around, play with the world, and just see what you can discover. This is the Mana game that embodies the "It's about the journey not the destination" adage.
It’s cool to hear your experience with this mana game. I actually bought the Collection of Mana and played through Secret of Mana and Trials of Mana out of curiosity. While I disliked my experience with SoM, I still had some fun with ToM. Doing this made me even buy the Trials of Mana remake! After playing those games to get a better idea of what the Mana series is about, I preordered Legends of Mana. It’s definitely a strange and unique game for the time that it came out, but I still find it interesting. The only thing that I still wonder is why would the developers working on the remaster not put in in-depth tutorials talking about how all the systems work? As a younger player going into this series, it has been a cool journey overall.
@@dragonkilla4540 I had much the same experience as you did with Secret and Trials. Didn't enjoy the former, but love the latter. But I will say, don't sleep on Final Fantasy Adventure. It's obviously limited since it's a Gameboy adventure game, but if you enjoy the earlier Zelda games, i think you'll find a lot to love in the first Seiken Densetsu. I find it way more enjoyable than Secret of Mana personally. It helps that it isn't very long or grindy. Just use a map online or something because it can be hard to remember where you're at.
@@dragonkilla4540 I just didn't want you to get to frustrated with the game. It's actually a great game but the open nature is a tad daunting. Also know the further you place an artifact from your home, the stronger the enemies will be.
In its heart EVERY good game wants to be... contemplated and explored in depth far beyond any possibility of hand holding. Thats what makes a game meaningful and worth your time.
I found this game rather enjoyable. I haven't finished yet, but I find it fun to experiment with the different abilities to find new techniques with different weapon types. My preferred weapon types are spears and 2 handed swords. I love the music and the tone is very whimsical and fantastical, which is what I've come to expect from the Mana series. Also this is one of the best visual remasters I have seen from the 2D era. It maintains the pixel art from the original game perfectly and makes the backgrounds deliciously high quality.
Honestly with as dark, oppressive and demonic as so many games are these days it's really nice to have more colorful and uplifting games to play. We always had dark themed games but it's just insane when i open up steam and glance at what's selling these days. I been playing a lot of retro arcade games and most of those are bright, colorful, flashy and light hearted too. Idk when the shift towards darker aesthetics took center stage but it's just not my thing outside of maybe Resident Evil and Silent Hill and the latter of those two are DEAD as dead can be lol, and the other one is pretty unrecognizable from it's source material.
@@EQOAnostalgia I would say that shift has been a work in process basically ever since 3D hit the scene. The demand for more realism naturally lined up with further advancements in graphical technology, which also came with darker storylines and more realistic stories and characters. Just look back at old forums criticizing Nintendo during the Gamecube/Wii days for having baby games with colorful kiddy graphics. This trend has been a thing for well over a decade.
@tiggy wiggo Yeah retro isn't always amazing. Sometimes it's not that special in retrospect despite all the retro gamers constantly saying how amazing games used to be.
The thing is, games have added so many QoL features, that older games feels "weird" if you are playing for a first time. Nothing wrong with that. But it's a problem with a simple remaster, in contrast of a full remake.
I don't think the review sounded that harsh. It's important to cover all of the most significant aspects of the game in a review, both the pros and the cons! Besides, in the end they still think that the game's got more good qualities than bad.
just a headsup for you, if you played secret of man back in the day. this combat is an actual step back. so be "warned" about that action part of the combat. i never played more than the first "dungeon" of the game, because i hated the combat. slow and clunky.
I loved this game as a kid, and this remake is letting me see stuff I never saw before, like the Grand Prix “quest’’. I agree it’s a bit odd, but I think that’s what I liked about it and still do. It was always fun rebuilding the world to see which Demi humans or quests showed up based on the elemental setup of each zone
Loved this game when I was a kid (I was 7 back then. It was 2000 when I got a PS1 and this game too). I second what the reviewer said about the game's lack of direction for the quests, that's so true haha! When I played this back when I was a kid, I had no guide to use nor the knowledge and skill to use the internet. Sometimes it took HOURS to beat certain quests. I'm also not a native english speaker so there was some parts that I had to ask my parents about for me to understand what's going on, or what I needed to do. As it was also my first RPG, I didn't think of backtracking or checking out old areas if there were new quests to trigger. It's nice to be able to play this again after so many years. The font is much nicer to read, the save-(almost)anywhere is so useful especially for smithing, and the remastered music sounds amazing. Also, I think some of the texts are rewritten / re-translated for the remaster which makes some awkward-sounding dialogue from the original much smoother to read now, which is great!
Super in depth crafting system that allows you to fuse element tarot cards into items is very in depth and hardly explained. Also you can create custom spells, program a robot to fight along side you and build him various weapons and movesets, and any non boss enemy can be captured and raised and will develop new attacks as he levels and fights along side you. This game is super in depth and absolutely beautiful. But yea the story is confusing and nothings really explained lol.
Really 6/10 what noobs may find it difficult to get into but veterans at the time finds it suitable of its time. 7.5 is good for the type of game it is at the time!
I just want to know why the classic FF games like 1-6 didn't get this fantastic treatment. Except, they are getting more ugly Sprite reworks. Just give us a FF collection like Mana Collection. ;_;
@@the-NightStar The Pixel remasters look extremely lazy especially when compared to the PSP versions. Sorry Night Star but I just can't agree with you on any level. When fans like you give them money for this kind of behavior it just reinforces it. You are free to disagree but at least TRY to consider why people are complaining. The rigid clunkiness to those moves comes from you pressing your attack buttons too much, for the 2h sword press it only 3 times max, and the attack animation will not freeze at the end, same with any other weapon, I believe unarmed is like 5 button presses, other weapons might be 4 I don't remember. But yeah if you don't eff it up you can chain together a bunch of strikes and animation lock your enemy until its dizzy/stunned.

The game is great and each mini story in the areas of the game is memorable, but the combat and gameplay is quite dated. I think a great introduction to the series would be the likes of the trials of mana remake for gameplay but not necessarily story lol

That and coop player cant customize anything except in there own game and then port them over. Loved dueling friends in the arena.
I just got my physical copy today from PlayAsia. Can’t wait to get into this. It looks awesome and absolutely beautiful. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with feeling dated.
This game is really great but you really need a guide for it to make sure you're placing all the artifacts in the most optimal places. Also while you can do quests in various orders there's also a more optimal way. Yea so just play this with a guide and you'll love this game
I've found a lot.of games are less enjoyable when they hold your hand so much, so games like this are fun without a guide. Kind of trial and error style.
I remember playing Secret of Evermore when I was young young. Like on the SNES and what not. And going through the process of discovering the mechanics was pretty awesome. i totally get why not it's like... not the move, but honestly I found it pretty clear as a young one, at least in Evermore, which with regards to levelling is the same.
It's a mana game unlike any other. I would only recommend you look up proper level map placement because there really is only one layout that will get you access to every location and artifact. Other than that enjoy explore and try to keep up with a story with SO many sub plots.

Well, people had way less distractions back in the day. Trial and error does not really fly now when you only have so much time to play a game on top of school, work , watching shows etc. Mosr people either have a guide or faqs handy or just drop the game because it decided to be obtuse at a certain point.
I love that the game is a spin-off of a spin-off. Also happens to be my favourite of the Mana series even if it is just a little side piece to them all.
Im enjoying this. Legwnd of mana was one of my FIRST Rpgs i was 6 when tbis came out i played it at 8 and had little issue figuring everything out. You say things are not explained however everything does get explained you just have to be willing to read up in the encyclopedias and speak with the onion knights in the first 2 quest locations that are dungeons and not towns.
Just downloaded the ps1 version and popped it on my psp. Honestly all the quality of life improvements sound great. Only thing is the redrawn back rounds look a little too good
The physical release is on its way to me together with the Saga Frontier Remaster. I am looking forward to finally get my hands on them And put them on my shelf in my gaming room where they will reside unopened for the next decade :)
Zion if you're reading this I just want you to know you're my favorite nintendo life guy. I love all 3 of you but you're my favorite dude. I don't even like the same games you like I just like your chill personality.
I have been playing the game from a few hours now, I have previously played fully both Secret of Mana and Trials of Mana, SNES versione before this. Right now I cant understand some of the critiques in this review. The combat mechanics in particular are the natural improvement on the mechanics of previous games. If you criticize these mechanics and this menu system, then you should demolish completely the ones in previous games, way clunkier. I cannot judge the story yet, I can only see that the approach is very similar to octopath traveler but, thankfully, with quite a bit less dialogues and more action. Graphics and music are top notch. I will wait to finish the game, but for the moment this is not a 6/10 game. Especially if you compare it to the two predecessors.
Legend of Mana was and still is one of my favorite videogames. However you can still see it’s age. It’s one of those games that you have to find and/or make a walkthrough. Even with that the most updated walkthrough is from. 2009. Right now I’m just trying to refresh and finish up the quests I wasn’t able to complete as a kid. After that… we’ll see how long I’ll play the NG+
It's an excellent game don't worry. Only thing and this might be an issue but you definitely want to play this with a guide. If you play it with a guide you won't miss out on things. Having said that, I'm not sure how much that detracts from your enjoyment
Honestly, I would only play this game if you played the original PS1 version and liked it/have nostalgia for it. This game was a huge part of my childhood. So the nostalgia I have for it can make me gloss over the many flaws the game has. I'm not sure if newcomers would like it, because yeah, it doesn't hold up to the standards that people except from most JRPGS. To get the fullest experience you can, following a guide is necessary imo. Even when I played this as a kid, I missed out on many things about the game. But this time I'm closely following a guide
i loved this game...but yes....imo it;s better to look up a guide during your 2nd playthru bc of the missables, the layout of the map can get confusing...
This looks so clean now. I saw NCS' LP of the ps2 version and the spritework was just amazing but some of the graphics and character portraits were pretty muddy.
While the backgrounds look amazing, the sprites themselves look very pixelated which I feel is quite jarring. Like two different groups worked on the visuals and didn't talk about a unified art style.
It's a weird argument to say "If you come into this expecting a typical RPG story, or even a normal one at that, you're going to be sorely disappointed." I didn't know it was a negative to break away from typical and normal and that this could lead to disappointment? It can be disappointing if done poorly, maybe, but this review doesn't show evidence of that being the case, so I'm left wondering why we're docking a game for not being standard these days. Even going so far as to say the story isn't gripping but is still not weak and is even hard-hitting is...odd within the context of such a review. Having played it, I don't even understand how the story is really hard to grasp, but that's a matter for another time, I suppose.
The quote literally explains itself “IF you come in EXPECTING a typical story THEN you will be disappointed” doesn’t say anything about it being a bad thing to stray from the norm it just says you should set your expectations accordingly
@@t.fernbach602 Bayeeern! 😃 Ich finde, es harmoniert überhaupt nicht miteinander und wirkt eher so, als hätten die Entwickler keine Lust oder Zeit gehabt, auch noch die ganzen Charaktere neu zu zeichnen. ^^
@SquareEnix One would hope that the character GFX will be updated with all the rest of the game GFX, otherwise it kinda feels like half-ass effort.. The blocky, pixely GFX needs to be updated...
I gotta be honest: I hate this game. And through no fault of its own. It’s just... so different from any game I’ve ever seen played. It doesn’t provide a tightly written main story peppered with sidequests, it doesn’t provide a wide sandbox for you to explore, it doesn’t simply provide a fun gameplay loop with racing, minigames, shooting, or fighting other characters. It’s just sidequests. It’s literally sidequests the game, and thanks to that, it provides a very unique vibe which may or may not float you boat. And it completely sunk mine.
I could see that concept working better in a heavily character-focused game. when I hear 'sidequests: the game' I think 'ooh, episodic slice-of-life series'
The non-lineraty is more prevalent then i initially thought. It takes a minute to understand the flow. Its interesting to see a ps1 game do this. Combat is fun and story and characters are interesting. Iv enjoyed what iv played so far. Its a pretty much if you get the vibes you get the vibes, but if you dont you wont enjoy it.
Problem with your review is you respect the game as a pioneer, but still judge it based on modern times. I get it, But tryin not to sound too old here but it IS one of those "you had to be there blah blah things. So for the tiiiime.. One of a kind Art style (The colors alone..) Some of THE best tracks any video games have to offer (and arguably still to this day Awesome and ridiculous characters and dialogue (this game literally taught me words as a kid) Gameplay was actually amazing, had the slight learning curve, but the world building came off great; as games that let you pick your own path were extremely uncommon. Even the fighting was amazing. Bosses looked awesome, THERE IS in fact a combo system, and the specials alone were enough to play and enjoy the game. Now fun fact: This IS a technically incomplete game, turned out that some things were rushed and omitted, But this isn't really seen until you completely dive in, and it honestly doesn't really take away from the experience. The lore is confusing. And don't get me started on the workshop.. but then again that's where you see the games depth, as forging weapons that hit 500+ strength, finding rare materials, and creating Monstrous Golems felt like a whole nother game within a game. Truly an amazing experience as a youngun, And not to mention it was super hard to find, and was ALWAYS being rented at the video stores, making you obsess even after you had beaten it.
Great review and great video! I remember the first time I came across Legend of Mana when I was a kid. I thought the game looked pretty, but I didn't like how different it was from Secret of Mana (which I consider to be the superior title.) I'll probably pass on this remaster, but that's just me.

Trial and error does not really fly now when you only have so much time to play a game on top of school, work , watching shows etc. Mosr people either have a guide or faqs handy or just drop the game because it decided to be obtuse at a certain point.
@@goldmemberpb the problem is that work and school are basically inescapable. Internet is such a double edge sword
This is the only mana game I will keep playing again 😍
I love that the game is a spin-off of a spin-off. Also happens to be my favourite of the Mana series even if it is just a little side piece to them all.
Lol can you just appreciate a game for what it is instead of comparing it to games you like mana is a awesome game full of content and hardwork
Yeah, how dare a review do a critical look at a game and considering all its aspects instead of just saying it's an awesome game
I am looking forward to finally get my hands on them
And put them on my shelf in my gaming room where they will reside unopened for the next decade :)
Ha ha I actually ordered both games at the same time as well a few days ago. Mine shipped already. So excited!
@@creekandseminole Great choice :) Hope you will enjoy them :)
Zion if you're reading this I just want you to know you're my favorite nintendo life guy. I love all 3 of you but you're my favorite dude. I don't even like the same games you like I just like your chill personality.
I kinda wish Zion would give his opinions on the game as well. Would like to know what he thought of about legends of mana
Thank you for your wonderful reviews every time!
Thanks for the review, I wish it were higher since I have a physical copy from PlayAsia. But, I look forward to playing it.
It's an excellent game don't worry. Only thing and this might be an issue but you definitely want to play this with a guide. If you play it with a guide you won't miss out on things. Having said that, I'm not sure how much that detracts from your enjoyment
Legend of mana is not the 4th game of the series, its a spin off
The 4th game (and last one today) is Dawn of mana
All I need is Grandia and the Dark Cloud series and I’ll be set with all my childhood fav games
This looks so clean now. I saw NCS' LP of the ps2 version and the spritework was just amazing but some of the graphics and character portraits were pretty muddy.
Auto saving is a godsend in RPGs
We also need a Chrono Chross remaster !!!
Love this game.
I'd love to see legend of legia and legia 2.
While the backgrounds look amazing, the sprites themselves look very pixelated which I feel is quite jarring. Like two different groups worked on the visuals and didn't talk about a unified art style.
This looks promising.. might pick it up 💖😎
Some people are saying the review is harsh, but it's all up to opinion in the long run. Great video!
I played the original release years ago, but didn’t get very deep into it. This review pretty much explains it.
I would get this just because it looks like Golden Sun..
You've never heard that phrase before, have you? You have sorely misunderstood the meaning.
I bought the PC version. Needs a pixel smoothing mod
This was my favourite game in PS1. Wish i can afford nintendo switch soon ☺️
Of note. Some things have been added and some things have had names changed.
whats with the pixelated characters, why make the backgrounds look great then toss in jarring low resolution sprites.
The game was REALLY great, but personally I don't like the way it mixes pixel art with that hand-drawn style.
It does look a bit weird, doesn't it?
@@t.fernbach602 Bayeeern! 😃 Ich finde, es harmoniert überhaupt nicht miteinander und wirkt eher so, als hätten die Entwickler keine Lust oder Zeit gehabt, auch noch die ganzen Charaktere neu zu zeichnen. ^^
@tiggy wiggo Completely understandable!!
this might be the firs time i've watched a review genuinly wondering whether or not i will buy the product
@SquareEnix
One would hope that the character GFX will be updated with all the rest of the game GFX, otherwise it kinda feels like half-ass effort.. The blocky, pixely GFX needs to be updated...
How you gonna have a preview of this game (as a commercial)before your review??😂
If you love secret of mana this is a good continue to the series and the style is really good
I loved this game back then
It is worth it, however you will probably want it on Steam as opposed to Switch because of the remote play feature.
Think I’ll try this in a sale.
Guys, The anime adaptation is out!!! Don't miss it.
They need to give us a Final Fantasy 6 remaster that looks like Octopath ASAP
Too bad there’s no demo. It seems like one of those games I’d like to try before I buy
Just picked this up last night
the switch version actually runs better than the pc port (wich has pacing and chugs really bad during battle)
Problem with your review is you respect the game as a pioneer, but still judge it based on modern times. I get it, But tryin not to sound too old here but it IS one of those "you had to be there blah blah things. So for the tiiiime..
One of a kind Art style (The colors alone..)
Some of THE best tracks any video games have to offer (and arguably still to this day
Awesome and ridiculous characters and dialogue (this game literally taught me words as a kid)
Gameplay was actually amazing, had the slight learning curve, but the world building came off great; as games that let you pick your own path were extremely uncommon.
I like the mouse teddy bear thing lmao that's like Dubya Dubya lol 😆
Breath of fire needs a remake like “trials of mana” had. 😤😤
twials of wegend
Harvey Dent… Can we trust him?…
Arrrrr take that 700th like matey!
Sprites and Pixels and Pixels and Sprites and Sprites and Sprites and Pixels and Sprites YO HO!!!!!
Lmao, I completed this game like 10 times but I never knew leveling up depended on the weapon you had equipped.
So playing this again
Great, not do Vagrant Story and Valkarie Profile.
i really hate the a "wtf im going to do moment"
legend of mana are really good switch game zion from Nintendo life, this is very good video in UK.
I'll be getting this when its 50% off
Right
Omg this looks incredible!!!
Looks a lot like Simon The Sorcerer., nice.
Great review and great video! I remember the first time I came across Legend of Mana when I was a kid. I thought the game looked pretty, but I didn't like how different it was from Secret of Mana (which I consider to be the superior title.) I'll probably pass on this remaster, but that's just me.
