I know it's hard to remember, but the Gameboy screen did NOT start ghost for 6 years. It's caused by the ink based screen slowly dieing, and was not an issue until the system began to age. And in 12-16 years there won't be a single unmodified Gameboy system that screen will still work.
You're right to point out that we shouldn't be so quick to assume that vintage tech is still able to faithfully recreate the original experience. It is also true that it's hard to remember exactly what it was like. I do however remember an incredible improvement in LCD tech from ~1990-2005. I also think's it's useful to remember people's expectations were much lower back then. There was incredible novelty to playing video games on the go. FWIW, I do remember one of my games from back in the early '90s, Boomer's Adventure in Asmik World, ghosting like mad during boss levels. I was fine with it at the time. If you had told me the designer intended that effect, I would have believed you. XD
It actually have 4 screen options for secret and trials, not 2. Windowed and full, but each of them have a option without filter and with a very light filter that makes the image a bit blurred but minimizes shimmering. It’s very difficult to notice because the game doesn’t really advertise it but the option is there
"[Secret of Mana] It's why you clicked on the video, inn'it?" Nay, sir. I clicked on it for Seiken Densetsu III. I played it with a fan-translated ROM years ago and I LOVE it. So seeing this video, it was an instant click. :3
Would love to know what’s different between the fan translation vs the official translation. I’m sure there’s some things that are different. I’ve noticed fan translations tend to add a little extra humor for better or for worse.
I will give a correction! The first one isn't called Final Fantasy Adventure on every part of North America! In Canada, where I live, when we buy the Collection, once at Title Screen, it'll show for us the Title Mystic Quest instead, but for sure, if we select in the language version before starting the game the option English (US), at that moment the version you'll play will show Final Fantasy Adventure, but not in the Title Screen Selection of the 3 games!

A valid question. History lesson time! The full japanese title of the first Gameboy game is: 'Seiken Densetsu - Final Fantasy Gaiden'. This translates as 'Sacred Sword Legend - Final Fantasy Side-quest'. While this first game started out with more FF aspects like Chocobos and Moogles the SNES sequel became its own thing and dropped Chocobos and FF from the title. The original concept of Seiken Densetsu actually predated Final Fantasy 1 but it was one of Squaresoft's early failures that almost led to them going bust; hence them betting it all on their 'Final Fantasy'. Lucky for them FF1 was a hit! They later reworked Seiken Densetsu and released it for Gameboy. Now the sequel, Seiken Densetsu 2 started out as the original concept for Final Fantasy 4 as they were looking to add real-time battles to the series as a way to evolve it. For whatever reason, they decided to stick with turn-based and SD2 became its own project called 'Project Chrono Trigger'. This was originally to be released on the Sony SNES CD add-on. When that deal with Nintendo went South, they cut it down and released it on cartridge as SD2/Secret of Mana. The cut material was then reworked into 'Chrono Trigger'. This is why Randi and the protagonist from Chrono Trigger look oddly similar.
@@epicgamerxd4511 Well their development is sort of intertwined but I believe the intention was for SD to originally be a spin-off of FF but it sort of took on its own identity and later became its own beast. The main FF entries don't have a lot to do with each other. It's more a sharing of themes I guess.
@@epicgamerxd4511 Cool. I read a couple of translated interviews from a couple of different magazines, recently, where they interviewed the devs. I thought I'd regurgitate the basics of them here while it's still fresh.

I really was turned off by the boss in SoM. Maybe it was just early on. But most of the bosses I came across required me to save as much mana as possible and then I could win. Many times I've tried to fight a boss with low or mid mana reserve resulted in me loosing constantly on most of the bosses and having full mana made it dumb easy and not requiring other thing than spam it. So i was ending up dogging most enemies in dungeons. Which is a shame because I was charmed by the rest of what I have played so far. The music and graphics and the presentation was pretty good. But the bosses man... They turned me off. But that theme tho.
I am disappointed that it doesn't include the Secret of Mana 3d Remake. It should have came with both the 2d original and the 3D. I'm not paying $40 without that. I already have the SNES mini and a Raspberry Pi.
what a total bummer. why only the 3 games? wasn't there a gamecube "mana" game as well? Why leave it out, if it's a collection? I would have purchased this for my son, if it was worth it, but I'd rather just build him a sick gaming computer and show him how to emulate all the old games I used to love.
The remake for secret of mana reminds me of what they are doing with the Pokémon games. Get it together. I cannot believe how bad the Pokémon games look still… If Pokémon games looked anything close to dragon, age 11, I would be buying that shit day one. I am not such a Nintendo fan boy that I will put up with the Pokémon games until they get their shit together. Paying legend of mana now, you can still find it hardcopy on Amazon. The Japanese version supports English language!
Two SNES games & a game boy game? For us$40? In the year of our Reggie 2019? Like, ok, SD 2 & 3 are classics, but no. No, this collection is not worth it, imo. If the collection was retailing for $25 then sure, or if it included the PS1 game Legend of Mana maybe. But as is I just can't recommend it myself.
It's 3 whole games for 40 dollars. They even went through the trouble of localizing the third one. And they're releasing it as a physical copy. AND it's on sale at Amazon and Gamestop for around 30 dollars. Really not that bad of a deal considering how much content is present here. These are big JRPGs, there's probably at least 60 hours worth of main story gameplay here.
@Scitch2781 yeah but fans most likely have already played a translated rom for it. 30 is a fair price but 40 is a bit much imo. I can already play all 3 games.

I have a fifty dollar bet on a American football game next week. If I win this is what I’m getting. If I lose well I’ll cry. Go broncos
No... Secret of Mana is NOT why I clicked on this review. I clicked on the review because I wanted to know about Seiken Densetsu 1 and 3.
Just got this for 19.99 CAD for boxing day
what a total bummer. why only the 3 games? wasn't there a gamecube "mana" game as well? Why leave it out, if it's a collection? I would have purchased this for my son, if it was worth it, but I'd rather just build him a sick gaming computer and show him how to emulate all the old games I used to love.
$15 rn at Best Buy!
Jesus Christ, whoever played SoM for the review... he really doesn't know how to handle the combat. Hitting before 100%, no positioning.
I wish they had included the colored SNES Mystic Quest version of Final Fantasy Adventure. That was one of my favorite games growing up
The remake for secret of mana reminds me of what they are doing with the Pokémon games.
I had lost my copy during moving over thr summer, and just picked it up again yesterday! Kinda looking forward to getting into these.
I couldn't give a toss about scan lines. Couldn't agree more mate.
Mfer crying over 2 Jackson's for 3 games lol.
@Scitch2781 yeah but fans most likely have already played a translated rom for it. 30 is a fair price but 40 is a bit much imo. I can already play all 3 games.
