For the first time in outside of Japan we are getting this Collection of Mana trilogy. For the Nintendo Switch, this collection comes with Final Fantasy Adventure (also called Mystic Quest), Trials of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 3), and the Secret of Mana! It's time to go through all the games that lead up to this amazing JRPG series with my episode on the history of mana!

Seiken Densetsu 3 was right up there with Mother 3 for a lot of people, myself included, who figured their wish of ever seeing a western release would never come to pass. Pity it's been overshadowed by so many other great releases. I'm so glad to see you covering it here!
Im waiting for the remake because Id love to play that on a stream at some point.
It's included in the Collection of Mana for Switch as Trials of Mana.

I played a fan translation and just got stuck at one point; I even looked up a walkthrough and it told me I was supposed to do something that was impossible. It was frustrating.

If you absolutely can't do without Dragon Quest, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 are released on Android. 1 through 3, the "Erdrick Trilogy," being the first English ports of the Super Famicom version ever. I am actually playing through 3 right now, having just beat 1 and 2 (I'm planning on finishing this Erdrick Trilogy and then doing DQ Builders 2 before moving onto the Zenithian Trilogy, which if you are not familiar is DQ 4, 5, and 6. 7 isn't on Android, as the 3DS got Exclusive Remake status (VERY good!) and 8 is a port of the original version, not the 3DS remake with added content. But for 1 through 6, I'd say that the Android Versions are the best way to play the games at the moment, if you can deal with touch controls, which are actually quite good. Somehow I'm in a huge Dragon Quest spree, having just beaten "Adventures of Mana" on my Tablet, which is a super-faithful 1 to 1 remake of Final Fantasy Adventure.
Quite a way to bring that conversation full circle, yeah?

I remember reading about "Secret of Mana 2" in a Nintendo magazine back in 1995, being hyped as hell.
Yeah, I did download a fan translation, and yeah, I did buy a Super Famicom and the cartridge for my collection, even though I'm not fluent in Japanese.
Now I'm finally playing an official translation. Only took 24 years, but well worth the wait. Feels like I'm a kid again, reading that article in the magazine. Such a stunningly beautiful game.

I Still hum finally fantasy adventure music to this day. It was so amazing to have a full fledged RPG on the gameboy
Seiken Densetsu 3 was my absolute favourite game as a child. It was the first video game I ever played when I was 4 (with assistance from my dad because he could read). It made me fall in love with JRPGs and I was so sad to see that nobody I knew had ever played it. I cried my eyes out when I saw that not only are they finally bringing it to the west, they completely remade it. I was happy to see my favourite game get the love it deserves (even though the remake wasn't my cup of tea). I bought the mana collection as soon as it was available and it's so nice to finally relive my childhood like all the other people could.
I love this, I want this, I need this. Also the remake of Trials of Mana coming later, I literally started crying when they revealed that during the E3 direct.

I didn't knew that it would later release in the west, so i bought it for the Super Nintendo when I visited Japan. But I had to wait for the fan-translation until I finally understood the Story. Great to have this now in this form to dive back in again.
I am a long time fan of the Completionist and have been watching for 4 or so years and I really like the structure, tone, and visuals of the video. I like the departure of the less joke based commentary for a more information based video. Although I would like to see some more of your great personality shine through the commentary, I hope to see more of this style of video in the future!! Keep up the good work

I love all 3 of these games, especially Trials of Mana, so bless you for covering it. I never ever believed that Seiken Densetsu 3 would ever get localized, it's the best game on the SNES right after Chrono Trigger and FFVI. Amazing, graphics, music, gameplay, and epic stories. Can't wait for the 3D remake!

Yeah, it's full of FF sprites. One of your party members is a Red Mage, and Black Mage sprites are used as enemies.
Secret of Mana on the SNES had Moogles too, the differences became more pronounced as the series went on.
The Japanese has the subtitle ファイナルファンタジー外伝, or Final Fantasy sidestory and it wasn’t an international marketing ploy either.

What are you talking about? Look, it's very simple: Since it has a few elements related to Final Fantasy, it is related to Final Fantasy in more than just name only. Not hard to figure out. There's nothing to argue here.

Seiken Densetsu 3 was the first one in the series I ever played, back in like 1999 on an emulator with a translation patch.

Man, that first game i vaguely remember playing on the gameboy back in my childhood. It must have been among the first videogames i ever played, but i never remembered it's name so i was never able to hunt it down again. Thanks Jirard, finally i know what to look for.

Over 20 years I've been waiting for Seiken Densetsu 3 (now called Trials of Mana) This is a dream come true.
For an advert, this was very well done.
Also, I don't know if they've tweaked this for the Switch re-release, but the late-game of Secret of Mana 2 can be a bit stodgy (to put it lightly). Hopefully, they'll make the God-Beasts less of a ball-ache in the upcoming Trials of Mana remake.
Its noteworthy how melancholic and sad these games usually where. In most of them the ending and the stories themselves had a very bittersweet taste to them with characters loosing loved ones and friends left and right.
The production of this episode is out of this world. You can feel the research and love Jirard and co. have for this series.

Squares RPG’s are something truly special and they have special place in almost everyone’s hearts. And it’s heartwarming to see that they still get the same love and appreciation they deserve to this day.
Sword of mana was a game i was bought for my bday way back when. I didnt get into it at first but i gave it a second chance later on and it quickly became my favourite game on my game boy. Its a great franchise with so much potential for future games

I've never played a Mana game before even though I had friends tell me how good Secret of Mana was back in the 90s. I pre-ordered the physical version as soon as it was available and eagerly await its release! Great video, got me even more excited to play these games!
Trials of mana was such a gem! When it got shadow dropped at E3 I immediately bought and played through it!
This is great to see. And I’d like to see a full completionist episode on Trials of Mana (obviously Jirad loves the franchise, and with the different characters and storylines seems like a good fit for a multiple playthrough game)

first RPG i ever saw, the instruction manual and the tiny amounts I played at someone's house... they opened my imagination in a big way.
I wish we had more realtime-combat RPGs even if these particular games had way too much grinding and difficulty to be all that enjoyable for me.

i just learned today that secret of mana had sequel and prequels, i was just aclueless kid back then who got this game gifted by his uncles but god damn this was the best nintendo game i have ever played and now i consider playing trials of mana aswell. cheers for the video.

Currently playing Trials and I gotta say I learned a lot! Sadly my first play through I didn't select a "paired" team. But my second run I plan on using Angela and Duran!

At Sakura Con 2008 Hiroki Kikuta had a mini concert/rave at his panel using a lot of samples from SoM and ToM. That was a good time.

The fact that we've finally got an official release of Seiken Densetsu 3 is pretty huge. It's a phenomenal game, and it's crazy replayable since it changes based on which party you pick. That alone makes the whole collection worth it.

Your video finally got me to break down and pre order the physical collection. I loved the 2nd game but never finished the VC version I had on the Wii. Hope to finish the trilogy in between writing my thesis!
