The biggest turtle ever described wasn’t an ancestor of today’s leatherback turtles or any other living sea turtles. But it looks like there are some things about being a giant, skin-shelled sea turtle that just work, no matter where, or when, you lived.

heck, even the little river turtles get around pretty well and they have much less reason to since they aren't trying to run from anything or chase anything down or travel halfway across the planet.
I get that they were trying to be funny but this is at least ostensibly an educational channel and they never included information to the contrary in the video, just kept talking about shells and playing on stereotypes.

@@nismo4x4n It's not just that sea turtles have predators in the sea and are more vulnerable as babies out at sea learning to live by themselves with no parental guidance. I would see more advantages to just lay a ton of eggs on land and hope that some survive... than take time especially with the disadvantages of having an inflexible towards live birth to raise a few off springs. Also take in mind being pregnant with a shell plate on both sides of the body would be improbable to evolve and also very tolling for the females to swim in the open ocean with predators.

I love sea turtles, I used to work on a snorkel your boat and saw them every day. Sea turtles generally seem to fit the "slow turtle" stereotype... But that's just because you rarely see them spooked.
We had one week where SOMETHING had happened - maybe pilot whales coming through, maybe a big shark, maybe poachers, who knows - and everything in the water was spooked. Didn't see a turtle for a week, and when I did see a turtle, as soon as it saw me it booked it.
Sea turtles are FAST when they want to be.

That's convergent evolution for you. Even if a species goes extinct, if another species takes over that role and begins filling in the niches that once belonged to the previous species, it too will evolve similar traits and habits.

As to a turtle's takeoff: I saw giant sea turtles when I was in Hawaii. They were sunning on the beach at the line of where the incoming tide was just about to meet them. It only took one or two swipes of the flippers for them to be gone once the water overtook them. It wasn't exactly fast, but if you start the clock at when they were just barely "in the water", they did in fact take off rather quickly.
