  • Dangerous, wet, curve that we have worked many times... This time an SUV escapes serious damage after sliding off the road and down a steep embankment. The driver had only minor injuries, but was checked over, just to be sure. It's muddy, slick, and steep down the hill with trees and saplings in the way. Can we get the SUV out without further damage??? We are certainly going to do our best. Thanks for watching and God bless!!!

Tell me more about the headsets, I'm interested in getting a set as well. Are they clear, can you hear them over an obnoxiously loud diesel (like my straight piped DT466E), how are they with a hardhat, what brand, where did you get them, and are they programmable? (A lot of questions I know, think I covered everything anyone might ask!)
    As always, thanks for sharing!

Ok...so...I'll do the best I can to answer your questions. Other viewers are also curious about the headsets. First, they are the EarTech UltraLITE wireless headsets. A viewer sent me two individual headsets, one master, and one companion. The master headset has all the "controls" that a standard "hub" system would require, without requiring the use of a hub. The set we have has only one ear muff so the other ear is open for ambient noise, which is a very nice safety feature. This system is, quite literally, put it on and it's ready to go. Talon and I tested them at the shop for their clarity and range before we used them out in the field. They are very clear and with a clear "line of sight" we got approximately 500 yards before they started to "crackle" . The ear muff does allow us to hear over the other loud, ambient noises, such as the engines running and traffic. The boom mic does have a wind screen on it to cut down any wind noise. It is an open mic not a PTT....very nice. It also has an automatic mute if you rotate the mic to the UP position at 90 degrees away from your mouth. They are also set up so that you can wear them on either ear and turn the mic accordingly. After testing the two headsets, I went ahead and purchased an additional three headsets to complete the limit of a total of 5 headsets per a single "master". I've answered all but one of your questions so far, I believe, and here is where I find the headsets a bit lacking. They do NOT work well with hard hats, especially a standard full brim such as I typically wear. The headset design is an expandable, hard plastic shell. It does not fit over a hard hat and then fit to my ear. The first several times I used it, I had to place it under my hard hat and then clamp the hard hat screw down so hard on my head that it was uncomfortable instantly. It also didn't allow for a secure fit of the hard hat as witnessed in this video. It left the headset securely on my head, but sent the hard hat and the viewers tumbling down the muddy embankment. Some viewers have suggested that I place the headsets so that the adjustable shell is behind my head, basically on the back of my neck. Unfortunately, this design does not allow for that for several reasons one of which being the boom mics' limitations. To compensate for this problem I have temporarily switched to a baseball style hard hat rather than a full brim. The headset does work over this style of hard hat, but I'm still getting accustomed to it. I am very grateful to the viewer that sent us the starter set and, overall, I am quite pleased with this set. We have looked into purchasing headsets that are specifically designed for our industry and they are quite expensive, starting out at around $6000 for a starter set of 6 headsets. The EarTech isn't anywhere near that price range. Perhaps we will upgrade in the future, but, for now, I will be grateful for what we have. Thanks for watching and God bless.

@Ron, Reading on the UK page as I was curious, you can get the UltraPak which is a beltpack unit with seperate pluggable heatset which gives you a "round the back" style headset, or you can actually get various other headsets as well. As a bonus the UltraPak has a 3.5mm conversion cable for connecting to a camera if you want!

    • @phytonso9877

From a roadway safety perspective, it's important to remember that guardrail itself is a hazard to life and property, and should only be used where it's shielding a worse hazard. In this instance, the vehicle went off the roadway, stayed upright down the slope, and didn't strike anything solid at the bottom. The occupants walked away, and Ron got the vehicle up in good shape.
If guardrail had been there, the vehicle definitely would have sustained damage from the collision, guardrail would need to be replaced, and the potential for worse outcomes for for the occupants would have increased - as an extreme case, the vehicle could have rebounded into traffic. Where to place guardrail is an important part of roadway design, and from looking at a map and Ron's video I believe MoDOT got it correct here.

Great how the fellows from the FIRE DEPARTMENT were keeping traffic off the right lane so that you had room to get the vehicle up the slope without having to worry about some crazy driver close to you and the tator.

It would be awesome if you could do a video showing the controls on your truck. We see you pressing buttons all the time probably turning on lights, PTO , extending the outriggers etc. just can’t see what displays say and what they do. Just a thought. Love your videos.
