    what about putting the bike on select to insta use it.
    Or that you can press A in front of a tree or water, etc
    to use HM's?!?
    You know, back in Gen one you weren't able to do so.
    you always had to go to your pokemon open severel menus to use hms or to search for your bike.
    THAT'S innovative!

      @Jrose11  7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      So the registering items thing is neat, I considered it, but it's really changed a lot since Gen 2. I don't think you even can register items in Sun/Moon. Also HMs no longer exist, which is why I had to leave that off the list, but it *is* extremely annoying to have to go through menus to cut down a tree!

    • @theSato
      @theSato 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You can't register items in sun/moon because there's no need to (ride Pokemon replace the bike and any other thing you'd want to use out of battle), but the Favorites list makes things more convenient in battle :D

    - 1st event pokemon (Celebi in Crystal with GS Ball in Japan)
    - male and female protagonist

    • @GreyPunkWolf
      @GreyPunkWolf 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I might be too late for my opinion to be relevant, but I don't think Pokémon games were ever intended to be hard to begin with. I mean, if you consider winning the elite 4 as the end of the game, it's pretty easy no matter what gen you're playing... Same from the IA, always had been bugged and/or bad in terms of strategy so there never was any challenge on this side either.
      To be completely honest, the only true difference is when you consider the end of the game to be when you've catched all pokemons, and that's actually harder in new gens because of the amount of catchable mons per game. So even then, the argument falls off by itself once you've thought about it...

      Pretty sure the lack of day/night in Gen 3 also comes from the same reason why sprites were not originally animated. The GBA's specs were too new and the Pokémon team decided to strip down the game to include the new mechanics, colours, and "cutscenes". Fan outcry over the motionless sprites is why Emerald sported some type of animation (even if it's just a sprite hopping up and down and turning the colour of their type, like Milotic).

    8:11 I wouldn't say breeding ever had a role to play in competitive. Gen 4 kickstarted competitive with online wi-fi, but it was sustained by simulators like Shoddy and by wi-fi battlers using things like Pokesav. It was not viable to breed a perfect Pokemon until gen 6, and it is only just now possible in gen 7 to hyper train non-breedable Pokemon. By the time these things finally became possible, simulators were better and more established. Despite legitimate perfect Pokemon being attainable, Showdown is now the only thing that really matters. Even if you do tournaments, chances are you do all your theory crafting, testing, and practice on Showdown, and only crunch out a team of real Pokemon just before the event.

    7:20 Gen2 competitive battling was the stalliest meta we ever got. Everything got bulkier because of Leftovers and there were no choice items to counterbalance the bulk. There were other items but none proved quite as powerful as Leftovers.
    The king of the hill was Snorlax if that is any indication. Machamp could scare him out and if you figured out his attacking move you could sort of counteract him based on that, but after a few Curses it was pretty much GG.

      It wasn't really leftovers though, I mean they didn't help, but it was more than you didn't have to pick which stats to EV train, you could train all of them. So everything had max bulk, offences, and speed. Today you can't max all of your defensive stats, only two, and that makes a huge difference. But mix attackers were actually a viable option then, so, that sucks you can do that anymore.

    Even though I have to admit that the series has gotten a lot better since gen 2, gen 2 will probably remain my #1 pick for the best due to just how massive of a leap it was from gen 1. There were just so many new features, rebalances, quality of life changes, and other details that the difference is like night and day (especially since that's one of the improvements). Plus it felt like every generation after it had a few steps back compared to the previous gens.

  • @Gameflyer001
    @Gameflyer001 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another crucial innovation in Gen 2? The experience bar. Gen 1 was annoying in this regard because you had to constantly check your Pokemon's stats chart to find out when it would level up, and having a high-leveled Pokemon meant it would take quite some time to get it up to a new level. In Gen 2 however, that option was still available but now you had a visual indicator of experience which could be observed in battle. The one weird part of the bar was that it moved from right to left, whereas in later games it moved from left to right.

I will be surely discussing this with my friends, using this arguments about why Gold & Silver are bigger and more important games than Ruby & Sapphire (which are pretty sick tough). THANKS! Gotta catchem all.

    What about being able to hotkey usable items? IE: Press SELECT to use your bike. It's an innovation that feels like such a no brainer, but really makes playing the game SOOO much better. It ranks pretty close to the segmented backpack. I remember the one time I went back and tried to pay Blue after playing Gold and I found it so clunky having to go back into that backpack to and searching for my bike. I

    I love Gen. 2. As I've said many times, it's my all-time favorite Pokemon game. No other Pokemon game has really surpassed Gen. 2 in my opinion. (Not even its remakes, imo)

      DrawnToast I saw many people say that but i cant relate. Maybe this is because i never played original g/s/c at the time when it came out. I later got myself HG/SS and i think its one of the best pokemon games ever:)

    My favorite feature was getting to play as a girl in crystal, i especially liked her cool blue pallete

  • @cathallynch8269

    A missed innovation would have been to mix up the starters from the usual fire/water/grass to include dark and steel. They did this in Gen 3 such as Swampert's Water/Ground typing and I suppose it would have been hard to pull off with such limited Pokémon and moves in Gen 2.

    7. The day/night cycle depended on the time and drained a lot of power from the batteries and required (borderline) professional help to change. It made the game not be able to save when the battery ran out, which is a problem that I never ran into in Gen 1 (to this day) but have run into a few times with Gen 2 games. Not worth it imo.
    Also Lugia is a steel type? Also I think some honorable mentions should be that you can see how many pokemon are in a box and you can move pokemon around without opening/closing pokemon boxes (and having to save). You can also mark an item with "select" which means you can say, hop on the bike by hitting select (or say, use a fishing rod with select) instead of opening the item menu.
    I also think that the exp point bar underneath the level was a nice update, it made us a bit more patient by seeing how close we are to a level up, and I think the different colored display made seeing the health/level/hp etc was much easier than in gen 1 where everything looked the same.

  • @wyomingptt
    @wyomingptt 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The main reason I hate replaying Gen 1 is having to constantly open the menu to use Cut & Surf etc... Thank God Gen 2 made that easier. Also, not sure when automatic Box switching became a thing but that's also really nice.

  • @ericicu
    @ericicu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Dude the BEST innovation is the shortcut for items.
    Gen 1, you need bicycle? Start, Item, Bicycle (that of course you had put at the top of the list)
    Gen 2, just press SELECT fuk yeah
    Same thing if you need to fish for a long time.

    Spikes was actually pretty good in gen 2, to the point where many players state it was 'the best' gen for Spikes, even though you could only put 1 layer down. The lack of offensive ideas and all pokes being fairly bulky contributed in any chip damage being even more important.
    Also, Normal types were better than Psychic types in gen 1, albeit by a small margin. This actually also was because Dark types didn't exist, which made Psychic types good, which made the only users of good Fighting moves poor.

    I did find a shiny in gen 2, and it was before the Gyardos too :) It was in the unknown places, after doing the first kabuto puzzle. 5 or so Unknowns in, and (I think it was) a 'P' appeared. It sparkled, and was kind of blue. I literally had no idea what it was. I caught it though, and didn't even think about it when I ran into Gya. Eventually I reset the game anyways, but yea :p

    I used to like Gen II above all others, but playthroughs throughout my life have changed that for the most part. The level curve is so baffling you either have to grind like crazy or not have a full team of 6, or even 5. I've seen trainers below the last city where the 8th gym is using non-evolved pokemon at the low 20s. And they expect you to be at 45ish for the League.
    Then you go to Kanto and every single person is weaker than the Elite Four except for Blue who is in the high 50s. Then at Mt Silver they expect you to level up up to high 70s to beat Red by beating level 35-44 pokemon or going to the League over and over and over and over. I'll pass, geez.
    I don't want to praise Gen 5 again because that one has terrible exp problems as well, but at least everyone in the post game (which is fairly extensive) is much stronger than the Elite 4, making for at least entertaining fights with decent exp.
