Honorable mention to pre Gen 5 Sturdy, it negated 1 hit kill moves, it negated 4 moves in the entire game, 4 almost never used moves that would most likely miss you anyway, thank god for Gen 5 making it an actual useful ability

Solid Rock is overrated. Energy Ball and Surf will still kill Rhyperior before it knows what hit it. Every Pokémon with the Solid Rock ability has a 4x weakness to Surf or Energy Ball/Giga Drain/Grass Knot. Although I’ll agree it’s still better than Lightningrod on Rhyperior. And I guess it’s okay for Camerupt seeing as it has good special defense and Amnesia but still... Rhyperior is still a really good Pokémon and doesn’t need Solid Rock to be better than all other Rock types except Tyranitar though. I just don’t think the benefit is as good as it seems.

If they had one that reflected a single type back, like grass onto a rock type gets reflected back for 4/10th total damage, i could understand that. 40% back would be nice.

Truant is understandable, but Defeatist and Slow Start were completely pointless since the Pokemon in question didn't need "balancing"

    • @D-Havoc
      @D-Havoc 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@snekladyrobin Those legendary pokemon are only "more op" than regigigas because regigigas has slow start. If, by some tactic, you got rid of slow start then it would shit on pokemon left and right justa s Slaking can do when Truant is gotten rid of. As for Archeops, it's lower defense stats also play a part in the "balancing" aspect of why it ahs defeatist. Oh, and let's not forget this thing can learn roost, so it's not like "all is lost" just because it drops to half its HP. But without Defeatist, Archeops would just be Salamence Jr. It's also important to remember the generation the pokemon was made in. There wasn't really that many op legendary pokemon back in Gen 4 to compare to Regigigas and I'm sure you remember how terrifying Flying Gem + Acrobatics Archeops was.

Although I agree with Run Away, fun enough, I'm doing a shiny hunting badge quest in Soul Silver right now and I'm finding a lot of use in that ability. My only high level Pokemon is my shiny Chikorita, so to avoid getting its shiny sparkles confused with a new shiny, a Run Away Sentret has been my lead Pokemon.
But yeah, Smoke Ball really invalidates that. It would be cool if they buffed Run Away so they could escape Arena Trap, Shadow Tag, Fire Spin, etc. in battle.

My thoughts on how some of these abilities could be improved and how it could affect competitive
RUN AWAY: On top of its current effect, a Pokemon with the ability can switch out even if abilities such as Arena Trap, Magnet Pull, and Shadow Tag are in effect, and it can switch out on trapping moves such as Wrap, Fire Spin, Infestation etc. This would probably benefit Dodrio the most since it would be a better pick than either Early Bird or Tangled Feet. Could also be useful for Rapidash and give my boi Furret some other options.
BIG PECKS: Should also protect from Defense lowering effects from the user. What I find ridiculous about this is that the only way any of the Pokemon that get Big Pecks as an ability is to use Mirror Move on an opponent that used something like Close Combat or Superpower, so I don't even understand the current version of the ability from a game balance perspective.
PLUS and MINUS: Buff the bonus from 50% to 100%. Considering how gimmicky the abilities are, at worst the most problematic thing you'd run into are two Minus Manectrics in a double battle.
MAGMA ARMOR: Add a "Reduces the damage from Fire and Ice Type Moves by 50%". It isn't much but it would allow Magcargo and Camerupt for safer switch-ins against Fire and Ice attacks.
LIGHT METAL: Add a "Increases the Pokemon's Speed by 50% but reduces DEF and SPDEF by 33% each". Essentially gives you a Choice Scarf as an ability with the downside of being locked into one move being replaced with a -1 for both defenses. Could make Scizor a better sweeper and make Choice Scarf Metagross a major threat. Would still be completely useless on Registeel though.
HONEY GATHER: For an in battle effect, just make it the Grass-Type equivalent of Water and Volt Absorb. Congrats Ribombee, you have a decent ability now.
STALL: Rework this from a "Pokemon always moves last" to "Any moves the Pokemon uses that have Stage 0 priority are reduced to Stage -5 priority". Say if the Pokemon with this ability used for example Thunderpunch on an opponent the following situations could happen.
*Cannot be burned by Beak Blast as the move would complete before the user would attack
    *Shell Trap will always fail
*Avalanche and Revenge would deal less damage as they would go first
*If the Pokemon with the ability is slower than their opponent, Counter and Mirror Coat will always fail
The only moves that would still go after the attack would be any of the force switch-out moves (Roar, Dragon tail, etc) or Trick Room. Plus you would still have the benefit of all the increased priority moves still keeping their original priority. Ultimately Prankster would still be the far more useful ability for Sableye, but I could see some pretty interesting sets that could take advantage of the decreased priority.

In a double or triple battle, have a Plus/Minus pokemon, have Gardevoir with Roleplay and Skill Swap, A smeargle with Roleplay and Skill Swap, A Shuckle with an assault vest and special moves. Put the plus pokemon, the smeargle and the gardevoir on the team first. Have the Smeargle Skill Swap on the plus pokemon. Then have the Gardevoir use Roleplay to copy the Plus/Minus from the smeargle. Have the smeargle use calm mind 6 times then baton pass with the shuckle. Have Gardevoir skill swap with the shuckle and put replace the gardevoir with the plus/minus pokemon. Then have a pokemon that has the move that swaps the atk and sp atk with the def and sp def on shuckle and bam you got a +6 sp atk pokemon with base 230 sp atk. The funny thing about what you said about counter and mirror coat is that with sableye being a ghost and dark type it can't even be hurt by either of those snaking it even more useless. Personally I think emergency exit is one of the worst abilities. It would be amazing if given to something that could actually outspeed a big chunk of the game and take a hit. But on golisopod it's almost always a hinderance. Sure you can nail something with a priority move and then get out. But if they're stacking hazards well then have fun watching your golisopod do slightly more than a combee by the time it's not getting forced out.

Af=gain, he wasn't analyzing it in singles. He didn't say "It's bad cause you need a terrain setter". He said the reason it's bad is because Raichu is fast anyways. So even in a double battle, Raichu s still the onlymon that gets it and is still bloody fast.

    Pick up has another use:-
    Generation V onward
At the end of the turn in which another Pokémon used a one-time use item (including throwing an item with Fling or using Natural Gift), a Pokémon with Pickup will collect the item if they are not holding anything. If more than one Pokémon has Pickup or Harvest, the faster Pokémon will restore an item first. If multiple items can be collected, the Pokémon will collect the item most recently consumed.
A single Pokémon's Pickup will not activate more than once per turn.

For me, the worst would be "Dry Skin", making both Paras and Parasect pathetic against anything that breathes an itty bitty flame onto their backs. It makes them doubly weak to Fire more so than it already was, and with the previously mentioned evolution line, the type combination of BUG AND GRASS essentially makes it 8x weak to Fire attacks. Worse is when it's a crit, then that number increases to about 12x weak to a common type.

But once you hit 50% you’re forced out on the dot. Thus eliminating your potential set up and forced to take the brunt of entry hazards (which most of the time just re-activate Emergency Exit and you have a be forced out again)

  • @jaredgriffin2155

I get a lot of these, but Klutz is hilarious if you use it on pokemon that pretty much require their item to do well. no eject button, no leftovers, no focus sash, no rocky helmet, no safety goggles. Then you just give them something useless, lagging tail, assault vest, ring target, and red card come to mind. Lopunny is the only one that uses it effectively due to her speed, but then she can just be a great physical attacker, and it's bothered by whatever she might have gotten. Although this doesn't help you during the actual game in the gyms, or the elite 4.
It can be frustrating, to massively detrimental to an opponent when used correctly.

Ever since Rising Voltage, 182 BP under Electric Terrain (on grounded targets), was brought to RU through DLC, Pincurchin + Raichu-Alola has been a pretty deadly duo. Surge Surfer makes Raichu-Alola literally unable to be out sped outside of like Unburden Accelgor, allowing it to run a Modest nature. Rising Voltage is a disgustingly strong STAB attack that 2HKO's almost everything besides a few resists here and there. It's access to coverage moves such as STAB Psyshock, Surf, Grass Knot, and Focus Blast allows it to beat down almost all Ground-types or other resistances that escape the 2HKO from Rising Voltage.

Klutz can be used to keep up the trick though. You can get another item like choice band and then switch that onto a special attacker and so on. It's not a good strategy but it's not replaced by what you described.

  • @Sentinel851
    @Sentinel851 3 ปีที่แล้ว

to make Klutz viable, the Toxic Orb poisons the holder. Switcheroo, a move that swaps held items, can be bred onto Buneary/Lopunny, that also get Klutz, so you can set up for some shenanigans, such as a Protect/Attract combo. if you swap it on, then swap it back, the enemy is badly poisoned, and you can near guarantee it, rather than needing to land a Toxic or set up a Toxic Spikes. the same combo can be done with a Flame Orb, and it gives no risk to you.
it's particularly brutal if you know that an enemy pokemon relies on a particular item to be viable, and wanted to try and take out one of their stronger pokemon by poisoning it.

Here is a use for Klutz:
Give the ability bearer a flame or toxic orb and teach it fling. If you use fling or the opponent swaps items (can’t remember the name if that move) then they get burned/poisoned.

  • @theodoresmith4708
    @theodoresmith4708 6 ปีที่แล้ว

For Stall. A Pokemon with payback could definitely work with this. Payback is a move that hits much harder when used last. And since stall makes you go last, payback would have greater power. Granted, people don't really use payback, both competitive and in-game, but this would make a good payback power-up.

  • @MrCarrot14
    @MrCarrot14 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Klutz actually has one use and its only on the Buneary line. Give your Buneary/Lopunny an assault vest and make sure it has the egg move switcheroo. Use switcheroo in a competitive battle (so you don't loose this valuable item) and if the pokemon you target has any status moves, switcheroo in this case acts as a permanent taunt! Theres also one more strategy although its less effective. Teach entrainment to a pokemon with Klutz. If used in combination with a move that impedes switching out (easier in a double battle), your target gets a really annoying ability that you have as well.

This shows a limited knowledge of Pokemon. My Lopunny did so, against a Garchomp 15 levels above it. Let's run calcs for a Lv100 Lopunny vs a Lv100 Sogon-standard Garchomp.
      Lopunny - Klutz
      Jolly
      @ Flame Orb
      24 HP / 252 Atk / 220 Spe
      ~Fake Out
      ~Fling
      ~Protect
      ~Last Resort
      vs
      Garchomp - Sand Veil
      Jolly
      @ Life Orb
      4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Speed
      ~Swords Dance
      ~Dragon Claw
      ~Stone Edge
      ~Earthquake
Using max rolls, this is how the battle would go.
      *Turn 1:*
Lopunny (100%) used Fake Out! (-16.2%)
      Garchomp (83.8%) Flinched!
      *Turn 2*
      Lopunny used Fling! (-8.1%)
      Garchomp (75.7%) was Burned!
      Garchomp (75.7%) used Earthquake! (-51.9%)
Garchomp (65.7%) lost some of its HP!
Garchomp (53.2%) was hurt by its burn!
      *Turn 3*
      Lopunny (48.1%) used Protect!
      Lopunny (48.1%) protected itself!
      Garchomp (53.2%) used Earthquake!
      Lopunny (48.1%) protected itself!
Garchomp (40.7%) was hurt by its burn!
      *Turn 4*
Lopunny (48.1%) used Last Resort! (-55.3%)
      Garchomp (0%) fainted!
Even if Garchomp used Swords Dance instead of EQ, so it wouldn't take Life Orb recoil, Lopunny's Last Resort would still kill. At best, Garchomp could hope to barely survive if Lopunny got min rolls, but it would still die to Life Orb or Burn on turn 4.

    • @Shin_FTW
      @Shin_FTW 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Now, let's assume the Garchomp was CB instead of LO, and had Outrage.
      *Turn 1:*
Lopunny (100%) used Fake Out! (-16.2%)
      Garchomp (83.8%) Flinched!
      *Turn 2:*
      Lopunny used Fling! (-8.1%)
      Garchomp (75.7%) was Burned!
      Garchomp (75.7%) used Outrage! (-72.2%)
Garchomp (63.2%) was hurt by its burn!
      *Turn 3:*
      Lopunny (27.8%) used Protect!
      Lopunny (27.8%) protected itself!
      Garchomp (63.2%) used Earthquake!
      Lopunny (27.8%) protected itself!
Garchomp (50.7%) was hurt by its burn!
      *Turn 4:*
Lopunny (27.8%) used Last Resort! (-55.3%)
      Garchomp (0%) fainted!
And now let's assume Lopunny got min rolls while Garchomp got max damage rolls.
      *Turn 1:*
Lopunny (100%) used Fake Out! (-13.6%)
      Garchomp (86.4%) Flinched!
      *Turn 2:*
      Lopunny used Fling! (-6.7%)
      Garchomp (79.7%) was Burned!
      Garchomp (79.7%) used Outrage! (-72.2%)
Garchomp (67.2%) was hurt by its burn!
      *Turn 3:*
      Lopunny (27.8%) used Protect!
      Lopunny (27.8%) protected itself!
      Garchomp (67.2%) used Earthquake!
      Lopunny (27.8%) protected itself!
Garchomp (54.7%) was hurt by its burn!
      *Turn 4:*
Lopunny (27.8%) used Last Resort! (-46.9%)
      Garchomp (7.8%) used Outrage! (-72.2%)
      Lopunny (0%) fainted!
Garchomp (0%) was hurt by its burn!
      Garchomp (0%) fainted!
Even if Garchomp got max damage rolls and Lopunny got min damage rolls, it would still faint to Burn on the turn it killed Lopunny, unless it was just a 1v1, but the odds of those rolls are slim.
Similarly, I made a Pidgeot (non mega) that can take any Tyranitar unless it gets crit by Stone Edge on a turn it's not Roosting. That's taking into account all versions of Tyranitar (including Mega), and taking Sandstorm damage into account.
And assuming Stone Edge doesn't miss once. That's the power of damage calcs.
