    I was the first person to carry my bike across the canyon in 1986 when I bikepacked the AZT. A ranger checking permits at Bright Angel Campground at the bottom said it was illegal to ride, I said I was carrying it not riding.

    What a great video! I have been fortunate to have worked with Gord for almost 7 years. We have become great friends over the years. Whether you believe in fate or chance, I think you were both lucky to find each other on this journey. And yes - Gord is cycling and fitness machine. But more importantly he’s just a great human being to be around…as long as he has coffee.

      It's awesome to see one of Gordons friends comment on here. He told me a lot of stories about his old riding buddies and his friends back home! I feel so lucky to have done this trip with him! What were the chances of meeting such an awesome guy on the shuttle and doing the entire ride together!? Glad that you got to see Gordon on this adventure!

    I don't ride, but I am in love with AZ living and exploring here 30 years. I'm a birder and got especially excited about the poorwills and pygmy owls I saw in your video. My husband did the AZT by bike MEX to UT and I live vicariously through his tales. True adventure you had. Congrats.

      Thanks so much Dylan! I appreciated all your tips leading into this, obviously the gaiters were clutch! I had several people on the trail who looked down at my gaiters and said that was a great idea and they wish they had some! I didn't take your advice on long pants/leg covers for the first 300, it was too hot! I guess I'd either be whining about cat claw, or having hot legs!
      Congrats on your 300 finish... I think you were right behind us! It's absolutely insane to me how quickly you did the 300. Looking forward to your next video!

      @@pnwbikepackingYou have quite a memory! I am hoping to packraft the Owyhee with a launch date of next week. The roster of paddlers is dwindling, however, and the trip is in question. So, I may devote more time to training for the Seventy48. I'll be rowing with a friend for my first "ultra" experience. I haven't forgotten my bike though. I did trail work with NWTA last weekend. So excited to have low elevation trails drying out. What fun that you chanced upon such a fine riding companion for AZT. Take care!

      Watched this video a second time, and it was just as good as the first. Out of curiosity, given the choice between a rigid fat bike (4" tires) and a hardtail 29er (2.6" tires) which would you recommend? I prefer the fatbike on really rough terrain, but wonder if there is enough easy rolling on the AZT to warrant faster tires.

    • @pnwbikepacking
      @pnwbikepacking  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Bernhard! Hope you're finding the video useful for your planning! If it were me, I would go hardtail for sure. It's worth mentioning though, I haven't ridden a fatbike for more than 100 yards, so i'm not sure my personal preference is particularly valuable.
      Having said that, here are some considerations which should influence your decision:
      1. Weight - You really want to go for a fairly light set up for the Lemmon Pusch and the Grand Canyon. Even if you're saving a few pounds in overall bike weight, it starts to matter. If you weighed everything out and turns out one bike is significantly lighter that could make a meaningful difference.
      2. Packability - I mean this in two ways... one is simply the logistics of schlepping the bike across the GC. Fatter tires may make the bike more awkward to pack and carry. So i'd practice loading up the fatbike on a backpack and compare that to the hard tail... see if there is a difference. Second, is just how much room you have on your bike... If one bike is more conducive to longer water carries, that could make a difference in keeping weight off your back.
      3. General Comfort and Terrain - "Really rough terrain" is a pretty subjective term, with my experience I would say the majority of the miles fall into the "rough terrain" category. Yeah, you get some highway riding and easy miles, but not much... not enough that I would make any adjustments to my set up that would make that type of riding more efficient. You should absolutely just be getting your bike set up dialed in for "rougher terrain" because that is the vast majority of the miles on this ride.
      4. Serviceability / repairability - With a suspension fork, it is one more thing to potentially go wrong. I've never had any catostrophic issues with my sus fork that have created a problem for me but its a possibility. Gordon and I had to deal with a lot of punctures, plugging, and flats. It seems that with a wider tire, you might risk having to deal with a lot more plugging because there is just more surface area. You probably also would want more sealant. I see this as a downside of going fat!
      If I think of anything else, I'll follow up here. Hope this helps!

      @pnwbikepacking Thanks Chris! There is no perfect bike, I just have to choose which compromises I want to roll with. The fat bike carries a load much better, climbs better, eats up chunk, but is nearly two pounds heavier. I'll do a backpack test before I make a decision.

      You've got it!!! Physically and mentally, If you've done the 300, I think you can do the 800! The hard part is just finding the time and dealing with logistics.... oh... and of course the Grand Canyon. The GC portage is hard to train for... just practice dialing in how to pack your bike and get it moderately comfortable. Dennis - AZT 800 - 2024!!! 👏 Good luck!!!
