In November 2023, I completed the SoCal Desert Ramble: a 500 mile bikepacking route that passes through the Anza Borrego Desert, Slab City, Joshua Tree, and Big Bear. The adventure took me 8 days to complete. The route starts in San Diego, but I chose to start in Alpine due to some private property issues near the start.. This was the adventure of a lifetime and I chose to immortalize it in this video.

I came from a bad home, and in my twenties I spent a lot of time out in Anza-Borrego State park and Ocotillo Wells OHV Park. You rode through the former and by the latter. That's some beautiful country, a place where one can slow down to a walk, stop and think - heal from childhood trauma. The part you mentioned about PT and folks in their 70s saying it seemed to them that it was just yesterday that they were your age - that's very true. I'm 56 and fairing pretty good but sometimes hardly recognize my own reflection. Seems like yesterday I was riding my dirt bike out that way, but that was 1989, some 35 years ago. Time flies and we're all just renters in this world. I don't live in San Diego any more and seeing the scenery meant a lot to me. Thanks you so very much for sharing.

@@dlambbikepacking I've been all over the USA and traveled the world and yes there's something about the greater Anza-Borrego area that gives off an "energizing vibe" like no other place. Amazing amount of quartz and granite in the area. You took Hwy S22 from Borrego Springs to Salton City. At one point near Hwy 86 you are standing on an overlook that looks south. That wash below is were the last X-Files episode (1990s UFO tv show) was filmed. In it, the "smoking man" was in a mud hut they had temporary constructed for the shoot. He made the statement, "They can't come here. There's something in the soil." By "they" I believe he meant "the bad people". Sounds crazy, but I believe there is something very geologically unique out there. Some places on this world have a "bad" vibe and some "good". Anza is definitely good. Maybe in fact that's why they tried flooding it and in part succeeded? If you are ever out Vegas way, drop aeolus(dot)sv(at)gmail an email and the wife and I would be happy to take you to dinner. The strip has some good food.

@@sailingaeolus I know the X files! It would be impossible to forget that iconic theme song. I don’t remember that scene though. I’m sitting in my apartment wishing i was back in Anza Borrego right now. I’ll drop you a line if I’m ever in Vegas!

@@dlambbikepacking If you google "x-files filmed at ocotillo wells" you'll find some interesting links, text and pictures. Ocotillo Wells is the Offroad park you rode right by on the S22. Maybe it wasn't by chance you stopped at that very point, flew your drone over the very spot that episode was filmed...? Synchronicity?

Just finished watching it in full. The interview at Slab City and your synthesis of it the next day as you climb up makes this work rise from a bikepacking video to a documentary. There are lots of bikepacking videos with great visuals, but what is missing in almost all of them is the contemplation of characters inhabiting the landscape, the history and its effect on you.
There are a few more opportunities in this video that you do not take, but which the drone visuals easily affords - a quick history of the landscape you are traveling through. Salton City, Coachella, the central valley, the canal, the sierras, are all central to california's history and culture and you have a chance to dwell on it.
Looking forward to your growth as a bikepacking documentarian!

I love constructive feedback! That was my only regret after I published the video. I spent time before the ride reading about the history of the salton sea and had footage describing it, but my goal was to keep the video around 30 minutes and that didn’t make the cut. I think you’re right that info could have been conveyed in the drone shots after Slab city. Thank you 🙏

They are tubeless. I had an extra tube just in case I couldn’t plug it

Good feedback! If you’d prefer the natural sounds, I could definitely upload a version with no music

Thanks, for some reason music kills the vibe for me , can't watch movies for the same reason. Cheers @@dlambbikepacking

Basics: Self Care: Nutritious food, eliminate substances that are not good for the human body, processed sugars are not good such as with cholesterol and too much salt. Keto for men or Ketosis for women for improved human body health and then there is faith, love, and Hope in God.

Why does the route have an awful canyon hike a bike and a 30 mile section of pavement? Seems like bad design.

Canyon sin nombre is one of the highlights of the ride. Even though it’s slow and difficult it’s ultimately rewarding. The 30 mile highway section is truly awful. There is a big shoulder but all it would take is one distracted driver. As I recall there is no way of connecting the rest of the route without the highway section.

Oh you were referring to day 1, yeah that’s a rough hike a bike. Not gonna lie. But I hope to do the CT someday so need to get accustomed to it 😊
