As the Pacific Northwest was slowly awakening from its winter slumber, I was day dreaming about riding in Arizona. So I decided to book a trip to Arizona and ride the short version of 2023 Pinyons and Pines route. ridewithgps.com/routes/42021852
I’m not part of the race, and I won’t be going at racing speed… I did my ride on May 7th - 12th, just a week before the race. And despite doing this in six days, it still totally worked me! I was able to complete the short version as it was mapped out on ridewithgps, though for the race, I think weather and blowdowns caused some last minute rerouting.
Overall, I had an amazing time and am proud of myself for completing the route! I experienced hot a and cold, smooth and chunky, hard and easy, a lot of contrast which is something I love on an adventure!

This is such a great recap of the course. The time you must spend on wide landscape solo shots must really add up in time and mileage! You did the OG course before we made adjustments because of the snow wall/cornice near the end. Great job on the route! My favorite parts.

@@pnwbikepacking Totally! Mine as well. Question: I'm trying to figure out your grip/bar end set up. It looks like you're using ESI grips with Ergon bar ends. Is that correct? If that is your set up, did you get the GP3s and remove the barends? It looks comfy and cush.
If I stay in motels, I use ear plugs. Usually sleep like a baby with them in.

Great accomplishment and a very nice post. This looked tough but may have been easier but for that massive camera on your chest! I can’t imagine trying to film myself on such a challenging route. Great job!

I'm just starting to get into bikepacking this summer with my Priority 600X. Let me tell ya how much I appreciate my PNW Coast suspension dropper. Long days in the saddle are much more bearable. Thank you for sharing this awesome adventure!

@@pnwbikepacking I still have a ton to learn about how to haul all my stuff but the bike just takes everything and keeps going. I have 900 miles on it now and it still shifts and pedals just like it did when I unboxed it. Now that I've had it fully loaded down (about 80-90 pounds) a couple times I can see why it was built the way that it was. The 600% gear range gives you a nice low set of gears to get that loaded bike up hills. I'm running 29x3 tires on it and so far it seems like it's a bit overkill for the easy sections until it ain't lol. Definately not a speed machine with wider tires but I think I'd prefer comfort over speed. Currently using the Old Man Mountain rack and it's real sturdy but I think I'd like to give that Aero Spider rear rack a shot.
Doing 65 mi plus all the time invested setting up shots and filming = good day of work! Well done!

I too live in the PNW, I’m above you in Vancouver, BC. This summer’s journey is a mouthful…I start of of riding on 4 of our Gulf Islands, and then head to Victoria where I’ll ride trails and logging roads approximately 800 km’s (that’s 500 miles to you!) to the top of Vancouver Island. Then I’ll backpack the Cape Scott Trail and North Coast Trail (I’m packing a roll up 50 liter backpack in one of my bags). Then I’ll catch the Inside Passage Ferry up to Prince Rupert (15 hour ferry) then the ferry to Haida Gwaii (7 hour ferry) Eventually I’ll ferry back to Prince Rupert and catch the train to Jasper, Alberta, and ride the GDMBR down through Banff and to the US border. Instead of continuing on the trail to Mexico(!) I will turn west and ride a series of trails back home to Vancouver. Easy peasy, right? 😬

While living in the little town of Strawberry AZ. right on the Mogollon rim I was witness to a Mountain lion draped over a car, killed during some hunt. This was 1985. So... going to pick up flagstone in those hill was with new caution after that.
That cat was much bigger than I, I am 145 lbs.
I did ride my red Simoncini road bike on 87 up the rim to Flagstaff, the return trip was much faster.

My 10 year old carbon fiber hardtail just got destroyed in all the mud at Unbound XL and is not safe to ride so I need to get a new bike. Yikes! I love my old bike. Thank you Tamas! In this video I am using a Slingfin Splitwing. It excels in this type of trip due to it's weight, compactness, only needing 1 pole. It isn't the most comfortable tent I own, but there are times where it makes the most sense. I carry a backpack because it is my preferred method for carrying my camera (On the shoulder strap) So if I am filming, I am brining a backpack... which has been about 95% of the trips I've been on over the last 3 years. I've grown really used to riding with a backpack, for better or worse 😃

Thanks for watching!!! The tent is a Slingfin Splitwing. Overall I really like the tent. It isn't my most comfortable tent, but it packs down really small, which in my experience, matters when you're doing rides with a lot of single track. It is advertised as a 2 person tent, but i'd call it a 1+. Doesn't have the best headroom... but it is light, compact, modular, and I only need to bring 1 pole to set it up. For fast and light bikepacking it is a strong contender!

Hey Kevin! Thanks for watching the videos, glad you enjoy them! Recently I have switched over to the Ulanzi Falcam quick release shoulder strap mount. I was previously using a Peak Designs capture clip, but wanted to switch to the Ulanzi because I could use the quick release plate on the tripod and the shoulder strap. Generally, it has worked okay. There are times where I struggle to unclip and reclip which gets REALLY frustrating. I had similar issues with the Peak Designs Capture clip, though it seems like on the Ulanzi it is more prevalent. But the trade off of being able to use the quick mount/release with my tripod is worth it... (so far anyway). If I had to do it all over again, i'd say.. If I DON'T use a tripod, get the peak designs. If I do use a tripod, Ulanzi Falcom system. Hope this helps.

Hey Tyler! I use a Garmin 1040 and I would say it has worked adequately. I haven't used anything besides Garmin computers so I can't speak to Wahoo and other devices. Both my Garmin units have had their share of quirks.
Here is how I'd think about it:
- Want a big screen, touchscreen, and the best battery life? Get the 1040 Solar
- Want good enough battery life, touchscreen and a bigger screen? Get the 1040. If you're not doing a ton of Multi day stuff or you don't have a ton of electronics to charge, this is probably the way to go
- Don't care about a bigger screen and does the thought of a touchscreen have you skeptical? Get the 840 solar.
When I didn't have a touchscreen, I wanted it. Now that I have it, it can be kind of annoying. Doesn't work well when wet, can be a pain in the ass with gloves. The bigger screen... meh... I usually am just following the line to make sure I am on course and if I need to browse a map, I look on my phone anyway. (Gaia).

Another great video! I’m interested in which platform you edit with and your upload settings to TH-cam. I edit on FCPX and shoot in HD with a Canon 70D and Osmo Action 3 and my uploaded videos always look grainy and choppy. Your stuff always looks really sharp. Just wondering what I’m doing wrong? Any tips would be appreciated. Keep on riding and filming!! 🎬📸
Hey David! I use Davinci Resolve. It is great because there is a free version that can do probably everything you'd need. Though if you are using Final Cut Pro, that should be perfectly sufficient!
Something you may want to pay attention to is your frame rate and shutter speed. I shoot my main camera at 24 Frames Per Second (FPS) and export my videos this way. As a result I am shooting with a shutter speed of 1/50. (Spend a few minutes googling this if you aren't familiar with this) The reason 24 fps is commonly used is it creates natural motion in the video. (Versus if you did 120 FPS for example it would look really jarring and figidty).
I am not familiar with FCP, i'd watch a few youtube videos on other peoples export settings. If it looks good while you are editing the footage, but different when you export, yeah... you're definitely doing something wrong.
I just watched your Beast of the Northeast video! I see a few spots where the video looks a little grainy, some of that might just be the cameras performance in lower light (Maybe look at your camera settings). Overall though I thought the video looks fine.

Really enjoyed this video. How much weight is on your back? Trying to figure out my setup and wanting to avoid a backpack for anything but water.
Thanks for watching! Hmm, I have never weighed it, but if I had to guess I would say probably somewhere around 7-12 + pounds, it fluctuates. I carry the backpack because it's my preferred method of carrying my camera (on the shoulder strap). Depending on the trip, I also may carry other camera equipment (Wireless mic, drone, extra batteries, etc..)
- Camera with mic and lense is probably 3 lbs
- Backpack is probably 2 lbs
- Other misc electronics to support video production - 2 lbs
The problem with a backpack is it's easy to shove stuff into it! So if I take off a layer, I usually throw it into my pack versus in one of my bikebags... sometimes same with food. When Rob and I go Bikerafting, my backpack is probably closer to 20 lbs! (ouch). I have become accustomed to riding with a pack. If I didn't schlep all this camera kit, like you, I'd aim to only use it for water!

Hah, thanks for watching Kenneth. Yeah, I will do a gear/bike and camera equipment rundown at some point. The camera clip is actually an Ulanzi f38 quick release shoulder strap. I use that rather than the Peak Designs camera clip because I can use the quick release plate with my tripod. I have used the Peak Designs Capture clip though and i'd probably give the slight edge to the Peak Designs.

Do not you worry about your camera? I put mine back to the pack almost every time. Probably I miss some moment because of this...
The first few trips I carried my camera like this, I was terrified about the safety of my camera... but like you pointed out, the alternative is putting it in my pack and I would either miss shots, or not want to go through the effort of taking the camera out of the pack. Basically, I found I was brining the camera but not using it.
So I figured I'd rather risk the camera getting ruined than... not use it, after all... I had to remind myself I bought the thing to use it, not baby it! I've been on some chunky terrain, bushwhacky terrain, and I have even crashed with the camera mounted to my shoulder strap. After 3 years, the camera is still working like new!
If weather gets really dicy, I will move the camera to inside my backpack. Hope this helps! Take the leap! Get a shoulder clip system and use your camera 5x as much as you currently do !😉
