    I was waiting for about 20 seconds for Martin Short to move, and then I realised it was a still.

    A Hirschfeld. Perfect analogy. Give that man 3 lines and you recognize the person instantly. Short can do it in one.

    Martin Short is the best - The nutty professors class is adjourned!
    The best impersonation of Jerry was the superb SCTV- where Martin Short did the sketch Jerry Lewis is line in Paris. Having loaves of French bread thrown at him, singing in fake French then breaking down in tears- his yelling at his band leader at the piano for missing his cue (Dave Thomas) . LMFAO!

      Jerry loved Martin Short.

    This is a great interaction. Stern is a masterful interviewer; and he shows it here by asking a provocative question and evoking a thorough and descriptive answer.

      @@raulduke3237 - Actually, he's never been better.
      He was funny in the mid-1980s, but I got tired of him eventually. He's now become a lot more interesting than he ever was in those days. I only wish he had reached this point earlier.

  • @andrewdutler9249
    @andrewdutler9249 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’ve always wondered about this too and Stern articulated the question perfectly. I’ve seen the sketches and I’ve always taken them as a “deep cut” vs an homage.

    Stern is correct. I think that Short's opinion is revisionist because in the '70's we hated the phoniness of the '50's and '60's show biz. Mostly, thanks to Steve Martin.

    • @danielsalisbury245
      @danielsalisbury245 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I grew up passed the heyday of both shows. SCTV holds up better joke for joke although it seems a bit like comparing Eddie Van Halen to Jimi Hendrix in that one lived to see a larger body of work thus allowing more room for errors.

      Jerry Lewis was well for goodness sakes Jerry Lewis a super star, movie maker, comedian, philanthropist legend...end of story.. you don't have to like him, but to say otherwise is just dishonest and stupid!

    It's true that Lucy wasn't funny. People tuned in to I Love Lucy pretty much by default. We only had 3 TV channels back then so if the other 2 didn't have something good, Lucy would get the ratings. She tried to revive her career with a 2nd sitcom in the 70's and again in the 80's, and she just wasn't funny so the shows flopped.

    Watch all the old funnymen, even before Jerry's time and see what influenced him. He was the last of the vaudeville acts that transitioned to film and did it better than anyone. He also revolutionized film making period. We didn't see another of his type until Chris Farley hit it big in the late 90s, and so far nobody since.
