How odd! I met Lucille Ball when she was walking her dog with her assistant on the streets of San Francisco back in the late 70’s. She must have been in her 70s and she was absolutely delightful to me. Just wonderful. She signed an autograph took a picture with me. She kept calling me “dear”. It’s a favorite memory of mine.

My mother met Lucy once a in Hawaii. Well she didn’t “meet” her but they were at the same resort. My mom said she was extremely rude to everyone. The staff, other guests and even people she was with. Martin’s story definitely checks out

Alas, this is unfortunately not an isolated incident. I’m a flight attendant and she had a terrible reputation for treating crew and fellow passengers horribly. I was such a huge fan of her but her attitude and treatment were just so atrocious. Not just with me, but other flight attendants as well. Never meet your ‘heroes.’

If you’ve ever seen documentaries on how awful hollywood was/is for women, it puts harvey weinstein to shame. Back then it was cool to smoke all day. As she got older, every bone in her body probably ached. When old people get upset and angry unnecessarily, I’ve always been able to neutralize the situation. Martin should have just been incredibly apologetic and kindly explained that there was no way he could have hit her chair. Complement her, and just disarm the situation. Sounds to me like there is more to the story.

Her daughter said she was not funny but very serious. People entwine characters with the real person. They can't seem to separate the two. I had a relative who worked in Hollywood way back in the day, and he said there was more bed hopping, affairs, drugs and booze then there ever was in modern Hollywood. The only difference was they did everything back then in designer gowns and without social media.

Some very very well loved personalities but behind the scenes they were hardly nice at all. Michael Landon was a real prize. He abandoned his wife and children for another woman and left them in such a financial state that other friends were leaving them CARE packages so they could eat. When you hear the story from Hanna Barberra about Walt Disney and how he tried to steal their ideas and keep them out of the animation business Disney does not come out in a favourable light. There were many more in these books just like them. Wealthy, greedy, and hungry for more at anyone else's expense. There were also some incredibly generous folks so I guess in the end it balances out.

Martin Short is a part of the fabric of my reality. Which is why I was so elated when I saw him at the Toronto airport. No first class nothing stuck in a terminal with me and like 12 other people with no ac it was like a hundred degrees. He was an absolute gem and he was totally doing a character so I wouldn’t bug him but I did anyway and he was the best.

I worked as an airport agent in Palm Springs California. I witnessed this type of behavior several times and it was directed to adults and kids. She was not a pleasant person in real life.
Yeah, I know exactly what you mean! When I was in Vegas ten years ago, I had a similar situation with one of the stars from Law & Order SVU. When I told him I was a long time fan of the show, his reaction of: "yeah man... whatever" and the dirty look gave me changed my perception of him.
My cousin was a flight attendant, she worked a flight that Lucy was on. She asked if she would like something to drink, her assistant told my cousin that Ms. Ball doesn't speak to common people, my cousin told her, if she wants something to drink, she'll have to speak to this common person!
Heard a similar story about the singer Cilla Black in the uk. Her assistant said not to speak to Ms Black. At which point the steward said ‘I knew she couldn’t sing, I didn’t realise she couldn’t speak either’😄
Wow, that and the story Martin Short tells certainly bring Lucille Ball down more than a peg. Here's a less funny story about an "icon" who turns out to be a massive jerk. A major art collector in LA was in a restaurant close to a table where Frank Sinatra sat with some of his mob type buddies, and those buddies were talking loudly in making anti-semitic comments. Finally, the art collector stepped to that table and said he was offended by their comments. Those guys then beat up on the art collector who was so seriously injured that he had permanent damage from it. Sinatra sat by and took no exception to his thug friends beating up on a guy. That story alone left me unable to ever listen to Sinata's singing without revulsion. Of course, I've always thought he was a grossly overrated lounge singer with a smooth voice but no real soul.
I've read biographies of actors, that have entertained Mr. Short. He is this guy. He's funny, warm, and venerous. It breaks my heart that he lost his beloved wife. He hasn't remarried. He and Maya Rudolph r comedy gold.
This dude is so funny. He's the reason why I watch OMITB. Can't wait for season 2. Steve Martin is funny too but Martin short makes the show. I just watched this movie he did when he played a clumsy bank robber and omg he was so funny in it.
There's an old saying that some people are reusing here which is "never meet your heroes" (or words to that effect). I would say, as long as you are prepared, if you have a chance to meet one of your heroes, I don't think I'd let this sort of thing stop me. And sometimes, they can totally live up to the expectations. I felt that way when I met William Hurt as well as Sissy Spacek!! Another would be John Travolta.
If you haven't seen his Netflix special with Steve Martin (I think it's called "An Evening You'll Forget For The Rest Of Your Life"), I highly recommend making sure that you do so. It's like a 90-minute live performance where the two of them do some comedy, look back on their careers and tell stories, riff in sit-down interviews, and do some musical numbers. It's really great.
I'm a huge Lucille Ball fan, but loads of people think Lucy Ricardo and she are the same person and that couldn't be more wrong. She was quite a serious person from before her comic debut on television and as she got older, she got more set in her ways (as the older we get, the more we do) and if you read her biography, her life growing up wasn't easy either and the role models we have as young can set the tone for how we'll become when we grow up - not always, of course, but more often than not. For those interested in having a better glimpse of how she was when she was older (around Martin Short's story actually), I'd recommend reading the book I Loved Lucy: My Friendship with Lucille Ball by Lee Tannen.

This is going to sound crazy, but when I was working as a model in New York, I visited Los Angeles, and my father took me in a restaurant called Mateo’s Amongst many celebrities there was Don Rickles and Lucille Ball. My lunatic father brought Lucy back to the table, where she introduced herself to me and told me that she was once a model in New York. Her voice was very low,and she kindly put out her hand. I’m not one to be starstruck, but I was speechless. All I could say was I love you, Lucy.

I can only imagine what that level of fame does to a person over time, but there are a lot of similar stories out there about her acting like that in her later years. It's well known that she was a perfectionist and a bit of a diva at the height of her fame, so it stands to reason that the diva in her was at odds with the fact that she was getting old and the television industry was moving on without her. Going from being young and having the biggest TV show in America to attempting a failed comeback in the 80's and getting canceled after like 7 episodes has to be a pretty big blow to the ego. Either way, just be nice to people.

This isn't the only story I've heard over the years about her getting over the top angry at someone she felt annoyed by. Her boorish behavior here had everything to do with her self perceived super star status & oversized ego & nothing at all to do with her marriage, her raising of her children, or her means of financial support. Plenty of people have personal & professional issues with similarity to hers and never behave toward others as she sometimes did. A lot of people try to make Desi Arnaz the villain in her story, but it would not be easy to be married to Lucille Ball. Bottom line, they each had areas of brilliance the other didn't, with Arnaz much more of a people person.

Back in the early 60’s my husband worked at a Chevron station near a prominent movie studio. Lucile Ball used to come in from time to time and was always very pleasant to him. He said she had a good sense of humor.
Esther Williams was married to Mario Lanza who was best friends with Desi Arnez. Esther said Lucy was morose in real life and a dreadful person to be around. She was insanely generous with waitstaff and other services personnel giving them hundred dollar tips way back in the 60s, but she was a bitter, mean woman and to other actors she was arrogant and disrespectful. These are things Esther said on the Rosanne Barr show in the late 90s or early 2000s I can't remember when that show was on. Maybe you can still find it.

Some very very well loved personalities but behind the scenes they were hardly nice at all. Michael Landon was a real prize. He abandoned his wife and children for another woman and left them in such a financial state that other friends were leaving them CARE packages so they could eat. When you hear the story from Hanna Barberra about Walt Disney and how he tried to steal their ideas and keep them out of the animation business Disney does not come out in a favourable light. There were many more in these books just like them. Wealthy, greedy, and hungry for more at anyone else's expense. There were also some incredibly generous folks so I guess in the end it balances out.

Martin Short is a part of the fabric of my reality. Which is why I was so elated when I saw him at the Toronto airport. No first class nothing stuck in a terminal with me and like 12 other people with no ac it was like a hundred degrees. He was an absolute gem and he was totally doing a character so I wouldn’t bug him but I did anyway and he was the best.

Martin Short is probably one of thr actors I can remember as far as my toddler years. Always a legend.
Lucille Ball had a reputation as an insufferable, demanding person. My late uncle approached her in an airport terminal and she snapped, "I dont know you!" It ruined his image of a star that he once adored.
I worked as an airport agent in Palm Springs California. I witnessed this type of behavior several times and it was directed to adults and kids.
She was not a pleasant person in real life.
Yeah, I know exactly what you mean! When I was in Vegas ten years ago, I had a similar situation with one of the stars from Law & Order SVU. When I told him I was a long time fan of the show, his reaction of: "yeah man... whatever" and the dirty look gave me changed my perception of him.

My cousin was a flight attendant, she worked a flight that Lucy was on. She asked if she would like something to drink, her assistant told my cousin that Ms. Ball doesn't speak to common people, my cousin told her, if she wants something to drink, she'll have to speak to this common person!
Heard a similar story about the singer Cilla Black in the uk. Her assistant said not to speak to Ms Black. At which point the steward said ‘I knew she couldn’t sing, I didn’t realise she couldn’t speak either’😄
Wow, that and the story Martin Short tells certainly bring Lucille Ball down more than a peg. Here's a less funny story about an "icon" who turns out to be a massive jerk. A major art collector in LA was in a restaurant close to a table where Frank Sinatra sat with some of his mob type buddies, and those buddies were talking loudly in making anti-semitic comments. Finally, the art collector stepped to that table and said he was offended by their comments. Those guys then beat up on the art collector who was so seriously injured that he had permanent damage from it. Sinatra sat by and took no exception to his thug friends beating up on a guy. That story alone left me unable to ever listen to Sinata's singing without revulsion. Of course, I've always thought he was a grossly overrated lounge singer with a smooth voice but no real soul.

I've read biographies of actors, that have entertained Mr. Short. He is this guy. He's funny, warm, and venerous. It breaks my heart that he lost his beloved wife. He hasn't remarried. He and Maya Rudolph r comedy gold.

There's an old saying that some people are reusing here which is "never meet your heroes" (or words to that effect). I would say, as long as you are prepared, if you have a chance to meet one of your heroes, I don't think I'd let this sort of thing stop me. And sometimes, they can totally live up to the expectations. I felt that way when I met William Hurt as well as Sissy Spacek!! Another would be John Travolta.

If you haven't seen his Netflix special with Steve Martin (I think it's called "An Evening You'll Forget For The Rest Of Your Life"), I highly recommend making sure that you do so. It's like a 90-minute live performance where the two of them do some comedy, look back on their careers and tell stories, riff in sit-down interviews, and do some musical numbers. It's really great.
When I worked at CBS, I heard numerous stories from many people describing Lucy as obnoxious, nasty, rude & extremely entitled.

I'm a huge Lucille Ball fan, but loads of people think Lucy Ricardo and she are the same person and that couldn't be more wrong. She was quite a serious person from before her comic debut on television and as she got older, she got more set in her ways (as the older we get, the more we do) and if you read her biography, her life growing up wasn't easy either and the role models we have as young can set the tone for how we'll become when we grow up - not always, of course, but more often than not. For those interested in having a better glimpse of how she was when she was older (around Martin Short's story actually), I'd recommend reading the book I Loved Lucy: My Friendship with Lucille Ball by Lee Tannen.
Listen to TCM’s season on Lucille, it’s incredibly interesting.

Clifford is one of the most underrated movies of all time.
The sheer irony of comparing meeting Lucy to all those times her character met a celebrity and just spilled as much spaghetti as seemingly possible. I was sure this was going to turn out to be a gag. I guess she was just having a bad day.. like that time she thought she was picking up radio signals on her teeth.
This is going to sound crazy, but when I was working as a model in New York, I visited Los Angeles, and my father took me in a restaurant called Mateo’s Amongst many celebrities there was Don Rickles and Lucille Ball. My lunatic father brought Lucy back to the table, where she introduced herself to me and told me that she was once a model in New York. Her voice was very low,and she kindly put out her hand. I’m not one to be starstruck, but I was speechless. All I could say was I love you, Lucy.

I can only imagine what that level of fame does to a person over time, but there are a lot of similar stories out there about her acting like that in her later years. It's well known that she was a perfectionist and a bit of a diva at the height of her fame, so it stands to reason that the diva in her was at odds with the fact that she was getting old and the television industry was moving on without her. Going from being young and having the biggest TV show in America to attempting a failed comeback in the 80's and getting canceled after like 7 episodes has to be a pretty big blow to the ego. Either way, just be nice to people.
Lucile Ball strikes me as someone who knew how to be funny professionally but wasn't funny personally. And by the early 80's, her kind of professional funny had passed its expiration date.

This isn't the only story I've heard over the years about her getting over the top angry at someone she felt annoyed by. Her boorish behavior here had everything to do with her self perceived super star status & oversized ego & nothing at all to do with her marriage, her raising of her children, or her means of financial support. Plenty of people have personal & professional issues with similarity to hers and never behave toward others as she sometimes did. By the time of this flight, it's clear she had become, & gotten away with being when it suited her, a selfishly entitled, thoughtless bully, which is sad.

Lucy was being a diva and by this in her life was a very unhappy woman. A failed comeback in the 1980 and not getting the recognition she once had decades prior probably fueled this encounter and I would assume a great many more.

Back in the early 60’s my husband worked at a Chevron station near a prominent movie studio. Lucile Ball used to come in from time to time and was always very pleasant to him. He said she had a good sense of humor.

Esther Williams was married to Mario Lanza who was best friends with Desi Arnez. Esther said Lucy was morose in real life and a dreadful person to be around. She was insanely generous with waitstaff and other services personnel giving them hundred dollar tips way back in the 60s, but she was a bitter, mean woman and to other actors she was arrogant and disrespectful. These are things Esther said on the Rosanne Barr show in the late 90s or early 2000s I can't remember when that show was on. Maybe you can still find it.

I was born when my dad was in his forties. I was a toddler when his mother died. My oldest brothers and sisters could have heard stories like that. Some if them are still alive and in their 70's. I am 60-ish.
