Great Video. I'm heading up to Ovens river with my kayak. Are there any things you think I should be aware of in the river such as currents etc? I'm chasing my first murray cod so any tips about catching them on lures as well is appreciated. Thanks

    • @fishermansoffice
      @fishermansoffice  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey mate,
Fantastic you want to get out after your 1st Cod and well done for giving it a go.
Current Is always a factor to consider when kayaking in general, watch out for submerged timber and current that pushes into and under overhanging trees/bushes etc.
My suggestion to anyone kayaking with little experience of an area is take a buddy with you(preferably one who knows the area well and if you can a PLB also and inform someone of where abouts you will be launching and retrieving from including any backup spots you have in mind if you have any.
Lastly just enjoy the experience of it regardless of encountering any fish it's great to experience what the area has to offer - warm (hot 😁) weather, large dry floodplains big river gum trees filled with cockatoos and cicadas (in some areas the noise can be pretty intense😂).
Some absolutely stunning sunrise and Sunsets to behold also.
      Things to bring
      - good sun protection (it's extreme out there and you will cook if not prepared) so good hat, sunnies, hooded fishing jersey or use a quality neck buff, gloves (often neglected but very usefull to avoid burnt hands), sunscreen for all other areas exposed.
-plenty of water (an isnulated flask to keep it cold is a nice luxury)
      - mosquito repellent (your preffered)
      - head torch, best times for fishing are low light to dark conditions typically so a must.
-snake bite kit (wriggly sticks are encountered often on these waters)
Have one and not need it rather that need it and not have one.
      Lure fishing...
1st thing - Keep it simple I usually pack 1 box of lures I plan on using on the day and leave all.others behind.
      - Take 2 to 3 Surface lures Max
paddlers are easiest options - eg jackall pompadour or a codger.
      Take 2 - 4 spinnebaits
My preference has been single arm 5/8oz single or double willow blade variety's (HC lures or Spinwright would be my recommendation) - black/orange - white - fire tiger or black/chartreuse.
      Diving hardbodys 2-4 Max
Old mate or Oargee divers are good value for money and catch fish, medium or deep options
Similar colour pallet to the spinnerbaits I would recommend.
Fish 1st light in the morning and late afternoon (usually surface)
Fishing casting typically upstream to pockets of disturbed current (eddies)
Anything which breaks flow in the river can potentially hold fish - particularly if within deeper pockets of the river.
When using.spinnerbaits sink them into the deep cover winding them back slow allowing them to drop occasionally back down.
Hardbodies similar to spinnerbaits however you are cranking down to the cover so casting past your intended target and cranking down to it is usually the better method.
      I hope that helps.
