Hardly any people levelling the blame at the people most culpable- the FA. They have selected him as manager and persisted even when it's abundantly clear to everyone that he's not going to win England a major trophy. Our best box to box midfielder is being used as a 10. A right back is playing box to box instead. Our best 10 is playing LW and being told to come inside. We've got two more 10s and a proper LW on the bench. The only player given width on the left side is an out of form right back. The only proper left back he brought to the tournament hasn't played a game since February. Supposedly we're a pressing team and the players don't even know the triggers.
We can barely get out of our own half and we're always open on the left side. It's all completely his fault. His subs haven't solved the problems either.
He is brainlessly cramming his favourite players into a system that doesn't suit the roles they are given.

My only problem is that many people act as if Southgate made england worse than before and is the only reason why england fails to win.
Because it seems like many people have forgotten that if we're honest england has a long history of failing for almost 60 years, while having world class players.
Southgate actually improved the results compared to before.
But that doesn't mean that i think he is a great manager and that the team + playstyle couldn't be improved.
@@derEnzon yeah, part of why I stuck up for him was because I understood why he was being pragmatic from 2018-2022 tournaments when others criticised him. Pragmatism in and of itself isn't bad.
He was getting the balance of the team first and foremost, but he was also preparing the team well. A balanced and well prepared team got us some massive results, particularly in the last euros when we beat Croatia, Germany, and Denmark in the semi when they were on fire.
Ultimately though, we went out in the world cup semi final because we went a goal up, but momentum swung the other way, things needed to change and he didn't change anything. successful by playing a certain way, and thats been simple football, with 2 holding midfield player in a 3, being well origanised

this period, the guy got England to a final and so did Grealish and Rashford and Sake and Kane. England have gone from
having 4 top class forward players, who could terrorize defenders, get in behind, create and link up and score goals
on either flank, to only Saka on the right, who in these last 2 games, him and walker are the only players who are creating
chances and getting in behind defenders. In my opinion, England have got to make do with who they have at the moment
and try and emulate that, I think Bellingham must play along side rice as the 2nd holding midfield player in a 3, with perhaps
Foden or Palmer. I think gordon and Watkins should be used out wide on the left, one as the starter and one as cover, with kane
down the middle and Toney as cover with Saka on the right with Bowen as cover. If Southgate doesnt wake up and revert
back to the things that have brought England, the progressive success before. England will get terribly embarrassed in
the last 16. Listen England are not going to get to a final this time around, but if sothgate can sort them out and make
brave decisions atleast we can show a little bit of heart going forward and not get embarrassed, and atleast it will be his

Here is the opinion of a Germany fan: The game today and the one against Serbia were similar for me. You take the lead with a goal and after that you stand in your own half and try not to score another goal. That's a good strategy when you're the underdog and have less offensive potential than your opponent, but with your squad, wtf. I have a similar problem with France, too pessimistic strategy, too result oriented, no development. You don't give your players confidence, you force them into a system where they don't have the freedom they need to show their strengths and it's boring to watch. Also, you can't rest your good players or give substitutes playing time when every game is a nail-biter to the end.

The "Trent in midfield" debate I do agree with, it's not working as anticipated with England, however the narrative is minimalized, I'll explain:
I've seen Trent play a more advanced midfield-like role for Liverpool for a full season in the season just gone, so he can do the job, we know he can, we've seen it...
The problem is when he gets on the ball he's constantly looking for that long ball over the top of the defence, which relies on the forward players making that run in behind the defensive line constantly, as soon as Trent gets on the ball for Liverpool Salah & Luis Diaz instinctively know to immediately make that run in behind, whereas for England Trent will get on the ball, he'll look up, but Kane/ Saka/ Foden/ Bellingham don't make that run in behind, it's as though Southgate is telling them not to run in behind, so Trent's only option is to play the ball sideways or backwards...
So the problem isn't Trent, the problem is Southgate not knowing what to do with him or having a positive attacking system that gets the best out of him, it's like Southgate has a Ferrari he isn't taking out of 1st gear, same with a lot of these really talented players to be fair...

Harry drops back because he gets 0 service. Watkins / Toney will have the same problem. In fact, Watkins had the same problem for 24 mins yesterday. Bellingham actually played him a through ball within 15 seconds of him coming on, then Watkins was feeding on literally nothing for the next 24 mins. Kane didn't even get a through ball. The only time he received the ball in a half decent position it came to him via a double deflection.

As a non English person I'm surprised at the shock shown by people at the performances in the Euros. You must have seen this coming. Top players but strategy wise it appears like they have no clue. Kane is the master at getting in the box for England... unfortunately it's our own box.
England have too many square pegs in round holes. Trent in midfield, Trippier at left-back, Foden on the left wing and there is zero use of a press or any shape creation to make passing lanes. If I were in charge, I'd play a more progressive style of football, one which can create multiple passing lanes and triangles to help us keep the ball. One such method is METODO, which Italy used to win back-to-back World Cups in 1934 and 1938. It's a 2-3-2-3 formation. It would be (Sweeper Keeper) Pickford, (Central Defenders) Stones, Guehi, (Defensive Fullbacks and DM) Walker, Rice, Shaw, (Creative 10s) Bellingham, Foden, (Attacking Wings and Forward) Saka, Kane, Gordon. This uses all the players in their natural positions and can be effective in retaining possession as we can create multiple passing options. That was sadly lacking in both the Serbia and Danish games. Also, the player nearest the ball should initiate the press, and be joined by two in cover to follow-up. You make the pitch as small as possible when pressing, and as big as possible when in possession. I saw nothing of this and expect more of the same dire football to follow.

The biggest red flag about him is that he genuinely thinks the result against Serbia was a good one. We know this because he didn’t change the team selection. He was happy with what he saw. Most likely will still top the group just from sheer player quality but definitely going to be a struggle against top opposition.

Dropping Bellingham slightly deeper, where he’s played 90% of his career, is absolutely an option. Him and Rice could work that midfield between them. Let Foden off the leash and get Gordon or Palmer down the left. But also nothing against getting Wharton or Mainoo in there. Either way i think the Trent experiment hasn’t worked.

chances and getting in behind defenders. In my opinion, England have got to make do with who they have at the moment

Foden is no different, when you have Rodri, Kdb, Bernard and Haaland Foden isn't even Man City's 5th best player.
The only 2 players I do believe are incredible are Rice and Kyle Walker, both of these players are world class.

I'm not english but am a huge England fan. I drove for 11 hours from Switzerland with my son and it was a real disappointment. And even worse than the game was to see Southgate almost happy with the way things were going in the second half. Great elite squad but a mediocre manager. England should hire Graham Potter, he will set them up to play modern slick football needed to win tournaments. Look at how Spain outclassed Italy, a team that would 100% dominate this England team. ETH was brave enough to call it as it is.
I knew it was over before the tournament began. The only natural LB he decided to bring is injured. Wharton over Jones or Harvey Elliot who both had great seasons. Trent was listed as a midfielder and Bowen selected over the likes of Grealish, Sancho and Rashford.

I'm convinced now, he's scared to make changes and subs. When he does it isn't to make a tactical change, it's a like for like. He had to whip off three players so it looks more like he's giving them a rest so he can't upset them. I feel like we've had performances like this before we've just scraped through. We beat Denmark in euro 2020 via an own goal and an extra time penalty.
The biggest problem with Gareth Southgate is that he does not know how to attack with 3/5 at the back so he does not have that option to go to.
