    I thought the coverage of the Denmark game was excellent. Shearer not pulling any punches and the analysis of the game from all was great. The hard hitting questions from interviewer was also nice to see.

      Post game interviewer speaking with the players was excellent, at one point she literally asked ‘are you being told to sit back by Southgate?’ Exactly what it should be, accusatory, something is going wrong and we deserve an insight.

    The best point about the Kalvin Phillips comment was made by Rhino Legs on Ben Foster's show
    "He's saying there's no replacement for Kalvin Phillips, he is actually available. He's not injured or banned, he is available for selection and you've decided not to select him. So you can't mention him"

    I've said it for years. Southgate has got this far relying on individual performances and the opposition being poor. Tactically he's clueless. Imagine being a CM and seeing a WB play in your position.

    • @pablodrogo
      @pablodrogo 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +45

      England reached quarterfinals in 2022 and finals in 2021 despite Southgate, not because of him. The players are that good, with any other manager they could have achieved more, or at least show better football

    • @nimascolari1508
      @nimascolari1508 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

      @@pablodrogo exactly. Individuals have bailed him out every time. As soon as the opposition start playing he has no tactical response. Literally "go out there and do your best lads" management. England scored when Serbia had stage fright. As soon as they came out playing England looked shell-shocked. He took Kane off and brought Watkins on? 😂 🤦🏻‍♂️ They should play together when the team is under pressure so the opposition have to sit back more. He thinks defending is bring on more defenders and sit deeper. Sunday league coaching.

    • @Bert-lw1ot

      @@pablodrogoso why aren’t the players doing it now? They can barely pass the ball to each other

    • @andrew_l1900
      @andrew_l1900 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      And he’s got picked there because of his range of passing, but then all of the forwards you play drop deep and want the ball to their feet and don’t make runs in behind the defence so his selection is pointless.

    • @nimascolari1508
      @nimascolari1508 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      @@Bert-lw1ot because there's no collective vision, identity or gameplan. Foden was running forward with the ball past Kane without a target to pass to! Kane can stay up and hold it, he's done it before but he's coming deep without overlap runs on the wing to turn and lay off to. CMs are passing side to side because there's no forwards running behind because Kane isn't running behind. It's like 4 different game plans in one team. Defensively, they're sitting deep without counter attack movement by CMs and attackers so it just invites pressure without an outlet. This is a group of talented players without leadership, coaching, tactics, strategy. It's shocking. Imagine being a premier league CM then having a wingback take your spot in a major tournament. TAA hasn't played that role and now he's expected to. Who the hell experiments like that in a major tournament when Rice can push up? Lack of vision, balance, identity, guidance and tactics. It's disgusting at this level. Negligence.

    It's difficult to understand how and why Southgate decides his initial teams and setup. There are two different factors in picking a side and a style of play. At an individual player level, you're analysing a player's skill, technique, footballing IQ, fitness, passing ability, pace, whether he can carry the ball, whether he can receive and play it under pressure. And then you analyse the player within the team model. What are the other players around him in his club side doing that helps him be successful? What are his responsibilities? What expectations or instructions does he go out with and execute? And you build your side, and your team, to try and get the best out of that. If you have to play Tripper at left-back for example, and you know he's not going to really give you width or cross in easily from the left, then make sure you play a winger like Gordon who can offer the width. If you have watched Kane throughout his career, he thrives when there is pace around him, not when he has 3 number 10's. If you want to play Trent in midfield, you'd look at Trent at Liverpool and think, he loves that switching play cross field pass and sees it early and executes it - but don't play him and then not give him a runner on the left side.
    It's very frustrating. It's almost as if the side he's picked for the first two games are designed not to work with each other. Surely he can see that there's no balance or fluidity, there's very little shape, we aren't creating decent patterns of possession, we're not pulling teams out of shape, there's very little pace. I don't mind if England don't win a game or a tournament, but at least play like a team and set up so that players have a chance of being successful.

    • @steveallen3434
      @steveallen3434 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I agree. That is where Southgate fails as a coach and if you take a player to a tournament and they can do the job best play them. Experience should not matter

    • @redmed10
      @redmed10 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This is what you get when you set up not to lose. And not trusting your team if they go a goal down. The fear of failure always exudes England teams and that comes from the constant cycle of building the team up too much beforehand and knocking them down too much afterwards.

I wouldn't be surprised if the players start tuning him out.

    This is the state of English football under the management of Gareth Southgate, These comments come from Harry kane, his own Captain !
    “We’re struggling both with and without the ball, We’ll have to go away and look at it. The pressure in both games hasn’t been right. We are starting games well but when teams are dropping a few players deeper, we’re not sure how to put the pressure on and who’s supposed to press."

    The best managers do not want to manage international sides unless it’s a last job before retirement. That is why we have Southgate. He has never won ANYTHING as a manager. Unless something changes, we’ll hire another D-list manager like him.

    Everyone keeps saying how good England were in the first 30 mins against Serbia. The reality is Sebia sat back and allowed England space. After the goal Serbia came out to attack and then England struggled.
    All the talk before the tournament was about how to break down defensive teams.
    Other teams have looked at England's recent, pre-tournament games, and are taking advantage. Slow, negative.

    I'm not usually one for complaining about mentality or effort, and think it's usually incorrect when people criticize them. But something is deeply wrong about the England setup and mental approach. I don't think I've ever seen a team that so consistently collapses after taking a lead. Most teams get a lift after scoring, we slump. It's as if fear of success overwhelms the players and coach.

    Genuine question for the panel. Obviously there's more opinions from ex pros these days and possibly the players read less papers, watch less analysis....but, from when you played/managed/coached, have you any stories about a time when a pundits views impacted what a squad or player did going forward? Have any of the comments ever landed with players and helped them or has it never had an affect to your knowledge?

Funny to hear a slice of Alan's life..."Shearer, Shearer!" That would drive me crazy, but I guess it's all in good jest. Michah and Gary after some wine was also good. Rarely do we see football stars normalized. Even the Man City doc on Netflix made them all out to be angelic super stars. It doesn't work like that. We all went to school to good football players. I feel like Southgate wants to be like Ancelotti as he wants the players to respect him and just try and let them “play their own game” so they end up having no direction on the pitch and lack cohesion as a team. You can’t have your striker at Left Back kicking the ball clear (to where he should be standing mind you) and the clearance is what eventually leads to the Denmark equaliser. Keep your 9 in the 9. Let Bellingham be in the 10 as he’s been the most devastating 10 in the world for the better part of 12 months and he needs to get in those final third positions. Foden can come on when Jude is tired and then move to the 8, but Kane needs Gordon to his Left to balance the pace of the team.
    Eto’o was a lethal st who bagged goal after goal, but in a UCL final against arguably the best side ever, he sacrificed his own game and played wing back for Jose and inter to win a treble. If you play for your manager, you don’t just drop deep and do what you want. So either the players are petty (which I doubt) or Southgate is not firm enough on his star players.

    I have a theory about the offside rule and V A R.
    In this competition it’s shown a V A R screen version with a transparent thin vertical line, showing offside with a hand being furthest forward, offside for response time yet the feet were in line, no advantage by distance. Surely if a footballer voted on whether offside should be on furthest foot to goal, or any part of the body, they would vote foot right!
    not to penalise reactions but actual distance, V A R thin vertical line view showing the feet of offending player in front it’s a slam dunk. So why have an original or adapted rule that leaves so many disappointing offside decisions, over what should be, is a better response time and a fantastic goal not being disallowed.. Surely it’s good essentially for football , offside if anything would be by the feet and modern V A R has pointed out that they’re wrong, thoughts ?

    Teams worked out a long time ago that we are not good enough at the back if pressed to get the ball out, added to that we stand off the opposition all over the pitch, even an average pro can look good if given time and space to play.
    The players we have maybe rely on others to do all the donkey work in their club teams, possibly the only ones we have is Wharton/Gallagher who will do that role selfishly for the benefit of the team, Gallagher is a bit clumsy in the tackle though. Still need other players in positions where they are comfortable and confident.

    Trent. You can't defend his tournament performance so far as being good.
    It's not like he's the only one playing under par and he's brilliant at RB inverting at times for Liverpool.
    Us none Liverpool fans are not saying Trent is a poor player, simply that his inability to go on the half turn matters too much at this level.
    Man Utd aren't even going turbo on Kobbie, let's be fair, this staunch defence is a bit silly now.
    Me personally, I'd put Wharton sitting, Rice box to box and leave the rest as is and just get 10 yards further up the pitch.
    Wharton finds a pass through the lines like Carrick did and frees up Rice and Bellingham who are our most well rounded players to choose whether to attack or defend more; if we aren't gonna be given a tactical plan at least give us the chance of the most balance!

    Love the camaraderie of the lads. Whenever someone’s not there they always miss ‘em. Hope Big Meeks made the flight 😂

    I genuinely think England should sack Southgate now and bring in a temp replacement. They don’t need a coach, they need a rouser, someone like Redknapp and Stuart Pearce would give England a much better chance.

      Of course they bloody need a coach. The problem is at the moment the coach is completely tactically inept.

      These are international players, they don’t need coaching. It’s a mentality thing that’s the problem. They need a manager who will relax them, release the shackles and tell them to go out and have a go. Football isn’t about coaching at this level,, it’s about mindset.

      @@MathewParker-by4nx Mathew I’m sorry, but with peace and love, that’s delusional. At this level, football is about mindset AND coaching, more than ever.
      Tactically, Southgate has been outclassed in both games. He’s playing Trent when all of our forward players come to feet and never run in behind. Makes no sense. This guy plays in a Liverpool team with constant movement and runners.
      The front four press on their own, and the rest of the team are 20 yards behind not pressing at all. So Denmark and Serbia build-up through our press with ease, countless times. Harry Kane even said it in his interview after the game, that they didn’t know how to press. These are all TACTICAL problems.

    Gareth doesn't want them to press, he doesn't tell us to sit back either, he tells the team to keep the ball.
    Except Gareth doesn't understand that another team is on the pitch and will press us and we buckle under pressure and lose the ball and it pushes us back.

    Superb discussion from these two legends. They got right to the heart of the issues. Any current England player listening to this will surely have to park the trite, absurdly loyal siege mentality and take on board observations of two former players who have simply been there. Have some bloody self knowledge and honesty England, you simply must do better
