Hoonigan posted the latest episode of their Knuckle Busters Project Cars series in which they’re preparing a Gen V Camaro to run a standing mile at 200 MPH. The twist is that the car will be powered by a 1,000 horsepower fully-built Duramax LBZ fed by compound turbos.
Hoonigan does nice work. Their series are informative and entertaining, and you can bet we’ve been following the progress of this build and rooting for them. Going 200 in a diesel-powered Camaro is totally doable. After all, Banks went 222 MPH in a Cummins-powered Dodge Dakota in 2002.
But when episode 10 of the series dropped this week, Banks fans were quick to light up our social feeds and Gale’s in particular. He was woken Monday to the sound of his phone vibrating off the nightstand. His Facebook Messenger was going nuts. “Gale, have you seen the latest Hoonigan video? You’ve gotta watch this!”
Before the 78-year-old turbocharging guru had a chance to see the video, we convinced him to watch it on camera. We set up a computer in the race shop and clicked play as the cameras rolled.

I have an early 2004 Superduty 6.0. I took it to a reputable diesel performance shop and talked to them at length about my use of the truck and asked them for their suggestions. They told me what needed to be done and informed me that I was not going to be blowing a ton of black smoke with the upgrades. That the “rolling coal” was super inefficient and was just blowing unburned fuel out the tailpipe. That was over 10 years ago and it still has ridiculous amounts of useable power and blows almost no black smoke. Everything you’ve said makes total sense. The video was humorous to watch and I hope they didn’t explode.
Hoonigan 1000% could’ve afforded to do this with Gale. Dan got 100x further than I would’ve gotten, I’ve watched him build many vehicles and for his first diesel I was super proud and inspired. Even the way Dan handled Gale’s feedback was wholesome and humble for how much Gale shit on the dyno shop 🤣
Exactly. Yea im a basic home mechanic. I can engine swap etc whatever. But techinal i cant. But i do know go to a diesel expert like gale when you have hoonigan or similars massive budget

I would love to see a future video (maybe even a series) with Banks power and Hoonigan on how to correct the mistakes and on how to do things right. I think many people could learn from a video like that, myself included. Sharing knowledge is one of the most valuable things anyone can do.

I enjoy your reactions to other Dyno runs. What I like the most is the common sense explanation you give on how engines work. It's more scientific than wow factor and that gets real respect.
This could be it’s own segment each week, there’s so many diesel “tuners” on TH-cam just going for big numbers and cutting corners. This is why I watch the Banks channel for real builds and real knowledge, thanks for the quality content and knowledge Gale.

This was great, I was smiling the whole time.
I remember years and years ago my grandpa who worked on diesel engines for the Navy in WWII, and drove diesel trucks after the war, and he was complaining about "Kids and their rolling coal tunes" and he had the same things to say, "It's destroying the engine, and it's not making more power." It's cool seeing the diesel performance scene getting wise and maturing. Diesel engines are so overbuilt they can survive these bad tunes, so people used to working with gassers think they're not doing anything terribly wrong, since it's not blowing up their engines right away.
If it's blowing black smoke, it's either broken or a waste of fuel.

@@brussell639 I would imagine that since they had the connections already, they thought they could rely on said people to know what advice to give them... They obviously believed that their people knew what they were doing, otherwise they wouldn't have went to them in the first place
@@brussell639 Dan is basically a driver who is handy with tools. Think along the lines of Tony Angelo. He has some basic idea, but he's relying on the 'experts' to do the homework for him. Poor Dan and the whole Hoonigan team has misplaced their faith in knowledge.

So having watched the entire Hoonigan build series on this. Dan has no idea about diesel power . He does not claim to know anything about it ether. He went and got some "professional advice" . He got bad advice. Seriously Mr. Banks you should reach out to Dan and Hoonigan and help them out. Dan is a good guy and a solid fabricator. He geeks out on all car stuff. Just watch any of the Build Bios videos. It's going to be sad to see this car destroyed. Dan really is a good guy.
We've spoken with Dan at length. He's a great guy and wants to do the right thing.

I think there is some unspoken things going on here as well. Dan has said he has no idea what to do with what in the diesel world and the whole show is sponsored by edelbrock said just slap all this stuff of ours together and take it to these guys they'll show you the way. They had Cory machacha (however you spell it but big in the diesel game) helping with bits and pieces but what I find interesting is they spent an hour or so at Cory's shop setting it all up to make sure it would run and not leak at the dyno shop but somehow never found out about any of the boost leaks that are going.
Timothy Thompson definitely. Dan is a great dude from what I can observe and definitely doesn’t know much about diesel (which as you said he admitted). I thought something was up on this episode, when the filter was black, and there was Uber smoke everywhere, and when they upped boost and gas, and got less horsepower. Wild.
Pay attention to the color of the air filter. Starts out yellow, turns black in short order. And I THOROUGHLY loved your take on the mayhem.

I remember Dan saying at the beginning of the series "We dont know shit about diesels", well looks like the people that helped with the build weren't that much better either. It would have been an awesome crossover event to see a Banks/Hoonigan project but like others have said, this was apparently pretty much done months ago so Im not holding any hope that any of Gale's wisdom was used.
The engine is done. But the whole car itself is no where near finished. Quarantine caught up with the them.
I said from the beginning “I get that Hoonigan had ties with edelbrock but Banks is the man when it comes to this stuff.” Ppe was heavily involved so there is some hope

The quarantine cut the project short, their last episode came out today. They will continue when they can. On the Tangents Live that just ended, Scotto said they talked to Gale and I think he's helping them sort it out. So there is hope! Can't wait to see what this engine can do when Gale is done with it!

he wasn't wrong. smoke vs no smoke, you'll make more power with smoke. that doesn't mean you can't make power without smoke. you definitely can. but to get the last 5% or so, you'll have smoke

In all honesty, this is not Dan's fault (he admitted his lack of knowledge) and really, he seems to look disappointed and possibly knew something was up.
Asylum Ville agreed. I believe this is Hoonigan’s first actual diesel-anything build.
The problem here isn't Dan, it's the guys at the dyno table.
It doesn't take a diesel guy to know that you need airflow across an intercooler, or that you shouldn't be belching smoke into the dyno room.

I build turbos for a living and a lot of customers that I talk to have huge misconceptions on diesel engines based on old wives tales and internet experts.

The part where you say the air filter is a restriction and the intercooler is another made me laugh as when they showed the intercooler I wandered if that shouldn't have been quite a bit bigger for a compound turbo. Then your rants went on and on about what they was doing wrong! Love it! This is what brings me back to watch your channel... I'm by far a expert, but I Learn more and more each time I watch a video.

Mr Redstoner go through some of Banks’s video. Unabashed shjting on bad products and calling folks out for doing it wrong, then showing how to do it right. Some of them are very sales-pitchy but lots of good material to learn from

hey mate, I'm an Aussie, I actually have never heard of Gale Banks before, but, when he said he knew most of the Diesel guys helping Hoonigan, and they were doing the set-up wrong, I sat up and listened. Love the Camaro by the way ! :)
@@johnhufnagel I can attest to that, my industry mentor sadly passed away this year. He was a hard old sod at times and more than once put me straight 😂 , ended up becoming good friends. It was almost like loosing a father in some ways.

I just got into building cars and motorcycles in my late 20s and I'm a million miles from being anywhere near knowledgable but seeing you rip these guys apart over this build definitely earned you my subscription. Thank you for calling this kind of bad behavior out; you don't build a car to hit a number once; you don't build anything for the claim of having built it. You build it to meet and surpass a goal, and you do it all the way. Everything I see from Hoonigan is about how none of their cars are complete, but they're taking breaks from them and I'm just perpetually amazed at how many followers they have; then on the other side of things you have guys like Rob Dahm that build stuff and he knows he'll never be done with any of it but he does it right and when he can't do it right he brings in guys TO do it right.

@@markrich3271 your comment contradicts itself. "Stoichiometry" is complete combustion. Therefore if any engine including diesels is at "stoich" there is no smoke.

@@micknumpty3783 Stoichiometry is a balanced reaction, it's not limited to combustion. Being at "stoich" will only produce no smoke if the reaction produces no smoke-like products, a diesel combustion reaction produces soot.

Hey Gale, I'm from Germany and I really want to thank you for your informative videos. I didn't know anything about diesels. And all the channels I watched have diesels blowing tons of black smoke out of the exhaust. Till now I really thought that this is the normal consequence of tuning a diesel to a high HP number. But I also wondered, why some of the diesel racetrucks never blow a single cloud. And you give all the answers to my questions. A lot of people say "if you don't know something, go and google it. all the informations are out there". But that is simply not true, as seen in the diesel community. People with knowledge, like you, should come up as the first result of every search in TH-cam. There are so many people doing stuff wrong, but thinking they know their stuff and make videos about it. We need more people like you, thank you 👍

I don’t think this is dan’s fault, because he literally said “We don’t know sh_t about diesels” but, it’s the people falsely informing him bs knowledge.
I mean their thing is "we try stupid shit for fun and if it works it's cool" so the first thing to expect when they experiment with diesel is a TON OF PROBLEMS, wich is completely fine, we learn more by doing wrong things ^^
Totally agree, Dan was like f it we are building it and we don't know how. He consulted others with more knowledge on the subject than he has. It's a shame that his consultant was up to par. But it happens. Sometimes budget and bad advice can throw you off course before you know it.

One of two ever to banned in NHRA for trying to run a Twin turbo Nitro methane dragster. It made same power as of today but that was way back in the 1980's and 1990's. He kept blowing the coupler or gear box before the 60' mark. Gale knows a lot that many will never know. I love picking his brain when ever we talk.

Gale convinced me 29 years ago as a kid that u cool every fluid(air,water,fuel,oil fluids) as much as possible. My freaking daily driver shit box has oil,trans,power steering,I would put a break fluid cooler if there was such a thing
David Moore Fluids are designed to operate in a certain range overcooled fluids can be just as bad as hot fluids. Most cases not a problem but it cold climates it can be.
David Moore when you said brake fluid cooler you lost any and all credibility.
@@mr.randomvideos2928 Way back in the day, some rally and race cars used a re-circulating brake fluid system and cooled the fluid on the return, so it is sort of possible, if REALLY silly for a road car where caliper heat soak isn't a problem.

@@rustedratchetgarage6788 Generally that's the reason it's done on gas engines: area under the curve. On a diesel it's generally done because the top end flow (heads+manifolds) is so crappy that it takes a high PR (lots of boost) to move enough air through the engine to keep up with the amount of fuel that can be injected. Single compressors struggle at very high pressure ratios, so putting two of them in series splits the work and lets each stage operate more efficiently. The area under the curve is also a factor for diesels since they have such a narrow rev range. If you can't get one turbo to achieve your peak boost setting until ~2500rpm, you will have ~1000 rpm worth of powerband and be a complete dog under all normal circumstances. Which, frankly, is what most high power diesel builds are...
