Am I the only one that feels as tho I'm just slightly addicted to Jordan Fabric tutorials so much so that I find myself checking daily to see if there is a new one... she has such great techniques and a very pleasant voice to listen too love watching them!!
YES! Informative content, great ideas, excellent photography, and good explanations as to why and how. Her diction is impeccable - no annoying “ums,” “tsks,” or wasted words.
I have made a lot of Dresden plates and I have a tip. To make sure your wedge is ironed symmetrically to can use a piece of cardboard with a diagonal line drawn on it. You place it inside the corner you are ironing and have the line on the cardboard line up with seam on the back of the blade. This assures that all of your blades are the same.
I read the comments about waste. Waste is in the eye of the beholder. I save my scraps, divide them into sizes (placed into zip lock bags) and have made some really crazy and whacky quilts, and sometimes they have been used to save the day. Unless you are sewing charms beside one another and making one plain square quilt, there will always be some waste, and again what one determines is waste is in the eye of the beholder. I see this as a new and unique application for my quilting. The possibilities for this is only limited by your imagination. Lastly, this is the reason there are so many patterns, just like a gazillion style of shoes. They don't always hit someone's hot button.
I took all my scraps too and cut them into usable pieces and placed them into containers so that I could go to them as needed, some as small as 1 1/2” squares and even made a postage stamp quilt out of them. My waste has to be smaller than 1 1/2” for me to toss, I’m not into crumb quilting so I don’t save pieces for that.
I've watched this video several times and what comes to mind is before you put the starburst on the blocks, sew the blocks together first. Next pin or use a glue stick to put the starburst on the blocks. Make your quilt sandwich and NOW stitch the starburst on the blocks, stitch between the blocks, trim and bind.
Not only do you construct beautiful quilts with genuine love and joy but you share other designers work giving them complete attention and mention. Donna I just love all that you do, all your attention to detail, and your gentle guiding voice. You are truly a master! Thank you for sharing your gift!!
Hi from Australia. I have been watching this gifted teacher for a very long time and every demo is beautiful, precise and professionally delivered. Thankyou Donna for holding our hand and doing it all for us. BRAVA !!!
I initially thought the starbursts were English paper piecing. What a clever technique. Your quilting really enhanced the starbursts. Another great video thank you.
It is a great technique for a small challenging project and beautiful color combination and result. I wouldn't mind wasting a bit in comparison to the awesome result. Thank you
Hi from Florida! I am a big fan. Fairly new to quilting. I’ve been following you for about a couple of years. Love your videos! You are a wonderful teacher.please keep doing what your doing😃👍 BTW, love your natural hair! I started 14 months ago too!
What would my mornings be without coffee and Donna! Your videos are just what I like to watch and listen to while I'm having my morning coffee and trying to wake up! I love watching you sew all those seams, and I especially love watching you cut all that fabric for those beautiful quilts that you make! Your quilts always come out looking so beautiful! Thank you for the tip about putting a weight over my ruler when I do my cutting! That's one of the best tips I've learned from you! And "finger pressing" my seams! I've learned so much from you! Thanks, Donna and Matt, and please keep the videos coming! (Hearts to you both!)
This has real paper piecing vibes - as an aside, I thought all quilting was done with scrap material and bits of paper. I thought all those 'American' style quilts were really advanced paper geometry! Then, after finally finishing a double quilt I have been making with small rectangle notelets as a template, a quilt I have been doing on and off for more than twenty years (!), I watched Donna wizz up a quilt in a matter of hours! Seriously! My second quilt, with Donna as my on line Quilting 'Auntie', took me a weekend - although the hand quilting is taking some time. So, thank you Donna for being a truely great teacher, Claire, England. xx
This is a really magical pattern. As the tutorial unfolded it was like an ah-ha moment. Donna your Master Video Maker is superb really. He gets his camera exactly right to the spot so that we can see exactly “how to”. Thank you for all your time and effort and skill in teaching all the quilting methods.
I didn't think I was interested in this pattern, but it's Donna and she is always worth a watch. Part way through I thought - well this one isn't going to get done - and then suddenly, whoa, I like this, you could have fun with this. Loving the bright colours but you can go anywhere with the colour choice on this . Love it. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing the technique. I have made another me and my sister design and it was fun and easy. For the people commenting on wasting fabric... find a different pattern that you feel is worthy. We are so lucky to have many different patterns and ideas for different people's tastes. Thanks Donna for sharing!
I am sort of laughing because I find myself thinking: Oh, let’s make that (because she makes it look quick and easy - good teacher that she is) SO technically I am not relaxing but mentally adding to my Let’s Sew That list.
I love your teaching technique! You break everything down so I believe that can do it also. Even your voice is soothing to listen to. I have made a couple Dresden plate runners and it never occurred to me to quilt them like you did, absolutely brilliant! Please keep your tutorials coming. Blessings from MN.
Hi, from Quebec, You are an inspiring teacher.. you work so beautifully, it is a true pleasure to watch.. thank you for taking time to show us what beautiful things that can be done.. wow. I am a beginner and I have lot to learn.. many many thanks
Every time I watch one of your tutorials, I learn something new. Today, I learned how to “straight edge echo” on the background quilting without actually marking on the quilt. Nice pattern and a great finished product. Thank you.
When I saw your fabric selection, I immediately thought of impressionist art-my favorite. Exquisite. Your white-on-white pattern added the leaves to the flowers! You are an excellent teacher, Donna-a natural. I’ve watched all your videos, a few more than once. Thank you for all you do. 💕
I got this pattern ordered today, the end....yes the end until after September. Swore I wasn't buying any more until after my daughter's destination wedding. But HAD to have this. I'll make the bride and groom a tablerunner to ease my guilt.
Hi from Texas. Even if I can’t possibly take on another project I am thrilled to see a new video from Donna. She is always so upbeat and fun. Thank you for a few minutes to relax with no worries.
Very cute pattern and cheerful fabrics! Made a beautiful runner. You explain things so wonderfully! Great that they include the template. I like to use "True Grips" on my rulers or templates that don't already have the surface to hold fabric from slipping. Thanks! Cheers from🇨🇦🍁
You are a great teacher Donna. This would be pretty intimidating but you explain everything so clearly. Your camera person is really really good too and that makes it so helpful! I can very clearly see what you are showing us. Thanks!!!
My thoughts exactly!! I've learned SO much being able to see up close and follow along with Donna's excellent instructions! What an amazing family operation!
Like many others, I'm bothered by the sheer waste from this very attractive pattern. I'd draw it out on paper, cut it, then use the bits to draft patterns to cut so there'd be no waste. I have a dresden template so I'd get the angles correct without difficulty. I do enjoy your videos! You're so pleasant and calm and your camera angles make clips that are clear and helpful. Thanks!
I am new to the quick piece method. Why not cut your own sqares rather than cut down the 5 inches blocks? So much waste. Sure one can sew the itty bitty scraps together, but life is too short. Donna is the best quilting instrucor. She’s precise, articulate, fast, and fun to watch. Wish I lived close enough to visit the shop. I’d probably disappear until the rescue dogs found me!
Not only the waste- the amount of work! Instructions are great as usual, just not for me. So small, it would take so long to do anything other than a runner or doilies (spelling 🤷) neither are my cup of tea. Again without watching this video it would be tougher.
I saw the two sisters at Missouri Star Quilt Company a couple years ago. I’ve made two of these and they are so much fun. So cool to see you doing this one. I cut and sewed the four patches precisely so that the pieces you cut away (equals about 50%) are ready to do something else with. I use every bit of it. No waste! 😊
So many fabric combinations could be used for this pattern; Christmas, Halloween, fall, etc. This pattern could also be a great scrap buster! Thanks once again for a wonderful tutorial!🥰
Absolutely! You could even sew the scraps together as you would in a crazy quilt block. You can precut some of the shapes, and/or add other scraps to some of the leftovers from this block; when all sewn together, square up to get perfect blocks. I would use a contrasting fabric to make sashing between the blocks (black, red, or your favorite) to make the blocks pop! Sewing blocks like this is very freeing & fun! ❤
I use the leftover scraps, along with scraps from my stash, to make crazy quilt blocks. In a quilt I just completed, i added red prints and red solids to create a red theme which tied all the blocks together. I then sashed them with a bright Christmas red solid; the quilt is stunning; it's one of my favorite quilts. Who knew!!! Also, once you have pieced enough scraps together, you can then cut out any shape you want, squares, triangles, dresden plates, parallelograms, star points, etc. In my quilt, the unifying factor in all the blocks is red. It works, and the crazy blocks are fun and very liberating to make ❤
The other thing you could do would be to combine the scraps into blocks and replace some of your backing fabric. If there are enough scraps it could make your table runner reversible.
The blocks for 4 patch seem to be 3" sq. The wedge at the bottom appears to be 4" across. Maybe this info helps you conserve fabric. She cuts so that picked edges are off each side, as well as cutting the smaller sq from charm size. Pieces trimmed off using the wedge template are large enough for some other purpose, not just as waste, too.
Totally agree! I don’t think this is one I will pass on. I love all the rest of her designs and she makes everything look so easy! Donna has and I for colors I never could put some colors together if I didn’t see them made up by Donna! She is amazing and I loved every item I have purchased. Matt is also amazing. Bought lots of runner precuts and other precuts. All items are perfectly cut and go to get her quickly. Thanks Donna.
I’m also from Texas and love to watch your creativeness! I love how you sat,”I’m not going to worry about it too much.” It truly makes me think that I could do this and not stress “too much.” Love you, Donna!
I had been skipping this video because I don’t like appliqué patterns… but, I finally watched it today. This is a game changer! I might be willing to try more appliqué patterns going forward!
So beautiful. Made think of Shakespeare - '“If you see a fairy ring - In a field of grass, - Very lightly step around, - Tiptoe as you pass; - Last night fairies frolicked there, - And they’re sleeping somewhere near.” l see many international comments. Would be fun to know how many countries are represented. Also see several requests for more in-depth explanation for off-setting backing when machine quilting. Love from the Ozarks.
I read a book about somebody living in Vanuatu, and for the life of me I can’t remember what it’s about! I’m in New Hampshire USA. It’s 3:40 AM right now and I will be praying in a minute. Have a great day. I think it was the Book, Getting Stoned With Savages! 🤣
This is a great tutorial. I bought the pattern with the ruler last week, before I came across this. I read through the other comments about the "waste" of fabric, but I figured out a way to make the block using 2 !/2" squares, because I plan to use my stash of fabric instead of buying charm packs.
I am working on a grandmothers fan, also placed on a square, and have been thinking about how I wanted to quilt the blocks. I love the idea of outline but am inspired by the angles following the sections and using the marking technique you showed. Thank you, you are a marvelous teacher.
This is a great pattern and I will try it. Donna thank you so much for your clear instructions. You make this pattern and all your other projects so very easy to try. I enjoy watching your videos. Thank you 😊
This one really speaks to me Donna and I am such a NEWBIE - LOL! It is saying "Christmas Presents" for all seasons. Loved the fabrics, the background you used - everything! Thank you so very much for showing how to quilt it on the machine too. So grateful for your time and patience!
Great close-up video, very tight, thanks! If some don't want to deal with leftovers, consider making a pet pillow to donate to a rescue shelter. It's a great child's beginner sewing project, learning basic terminology, how to sew a line, turn corners, invert, fill and close off. Pillows can be used for soft bedding. At least it's something.
I don't get the commercials, thank goodness! Lovely quilt and lovely design. I was very interested in learning about twisting the backing fabric--hope this helps me with the quilting on my old machine as I always seem to end up with folds, even with a walking foot.
Donna I love watching your videos, this one is so cute. Makes it look like there was so much work and while there is work not as much as it looks. I like the quilting you did.
Such a beautiful runner! While it does seem extravagant with its consumption of fabric, there are always scraps in every quilt project. All it takes is a dab of creativity to determine how those bits will be turned into something new. Thank you, Jordan Fabrics, for another wonderful tutorial. I always learn something new. Your methodical approach has encouraged me to acquire new skills helpful for my hobby. With gratitude ~ Happy Quilting!
I agree - as sewists/quilters we need to think outside the box to consider how to reduce "waste". As someone else suggested, save unusable pieces for stuffing a pet bed. I donate them to the local humane society. (Missouri Star Quilt Company has a video tutorial on making a small version but you can adjust the size easily.)
@@d.s.friendly7616 Here is the "outside the box" way to make the quilt just as Donna did. The pattern calls for 3" squares. You could get 9 of these out of a 10" in layer cake and have only 1" inch of waste per layer cake.

I like the uniqueness of this pattern. It simlar to a dresden but the extra dimension of tge diamond shapes gives it sizzle. 🎶💐💖
You are the best teacher. I always learn something from you. Thank you!
Donna brings such joy into her quilting patterns. It doesn’t matter what she is making, she just injects smiles.

If anyone is worried about whether or not they will like making this, you can make just one (from scraps) and turn it into a pillow or table topper.
This is great - I love how you get the camera so close to show exactly how to fold the wedges over. So helpful. Thanks for another awesome video!
I am working on a grandmothers fan, also placed on a square, and have been thinking about how I wanted to quilt the blocks. I love the idea of outline but am inspired by the angles following the sections and using the marking technique you showed. Thank you, you are a marvelous teacher.
I never thought of sewing both ends of a dresden piece...can't wait to see if it will make a star also! Thanks.
Wow such a beautiful pattern and unique method!! Any time I see a new video from you it makes my day! I learn so much from each of your videos!
I watch at least 2 or 3. A day. 😊. She’s very easy to fallow along with.
I love this pattern and the fact that the template comes with it is a great bonus feature.
This is a great pattern and I will try it. Donna thank you so much for your clear instructions. You make this pattern and all your other projects so very easy to try. I enjoy watching your videos. Thank you 😊
This is fantastic. I'm learning patchwork with you. Your tutorial and how you teach is wonderful. Thank so much for sharing your patchwork knowledge.
What a fun technique. Thank you for your wonderful videos.
This is really pretty. I don't understand the theory of having the backing crooked. Can you explain why, please?
This one really speaks to me Donna and I am such a NEWBIE - LOL! It is saying "Christmas Presents" for all seasons. Loved the fabrics, the background you used - everything! Thank you so very much for showing how to quilt it on the machine too. So grateful for your time and patience!
I bet you could even quilt each block separately and then sew them together like a QAYG project. That would be fun and easy on a domestic machine.
I enjoyed this thanks 👍🏼
It reminded me of making Dresden Plates but more intricate. And I would definitely use the scraps for another project. 😊🌸🌷💕
So pretty would look like a snow flake with Christmas colors, Using off the bolt would mean less waste I would think.
Wouldn't it make a great tree skirt
You make it look so easy, I like the design!
Jordan Fabrics, thoroughly enjoy watching your tutorials!! Thank you so much! Love the quilt giveaways! Lovely for you to share your talent!!
Jorden fabrics
Oh, I am guessing I misspelled Jordan Fabrics, should be Jorden Fabrics??!! So sorry!
What a fun video donna ! I'm so aching to make a quilt. You do beautiful work.
