You'll never stop working it. Ever. I did an LS3 and tr6060 swap. 430hp, modern platform and I am constantly fixing stuff. But it's a classic car and you have to remember that your vehicle is 52 years old. Heck when I'm that age I'll probably be falling apart too

I feel your pain Nate. I've had my 1968 Convertible since 1989. She was restored then and had a new 302 build in '98. Trouble is.....it's still a struggle. Literally, everything you talked about I have lived through. That being said, I can't get rid of her. She's just too damn nice. As we speak though, she's "grounded" with motor issues. I was told once that you need to drive them to keep them from having issues. Maybe that's the problem. Since the restoration, she's only been driven about 500 miles. You keep on driving her Nate.....it's got to get better.
the problem here bud is that you are trying to mod it and doing a 600 hp engine swap before fixing it, yes its a 50 year old car of course its gonna have problems, fix it first then mod it.
everything is getting swapped so fixing the current motor wont have any affect on what we are going to do

If upgrade everything that moves. Breaks, suspension. Re-wire the whole car.
If you want it to be reliable, make sure anything that can fail has been replaced or at least inspected.

@@drewsharp1615 I would disagree regularly checking your wheel bearing will keep the wheel on the car. Lol steering loose. I guess now one has shown you how to check your tie rods and ball joints with pliers. Once again basic mechanical checking on old cars is required to keep it on the road. People take for granted new cars. 50 years ago this was all basic stuff

Nate, mistake with Coyote, love mine and she's to 289 68 as well. Reckon coyote swaps have been done to death. These cars are great the way they are. Appreciate for what it is...

Nate, I'm up on OC and rebuilding a 68 FB of my own. Been following your channel. I understand the frustration, but you're not doing yourself any favors (on the frustration scale) by doing that coyote swap. Here's what I would recommend you do:
1. Put a nice 360hp crate 302 in and convert that auto to a 4 speed. Huge fun factor improvement with the 4 speed alone.
2. With the money you saved on not doing the coyote swap, go have AC put in. We're both in So Cal, and dude, you need AC. I'm putting it in mine.
3. Get the car re-wired. You'll be glad you did. No telling what the PO did, but it's clear he spend a ton of money on appearance and not on the drive train and electrical.
Do those things are you will really enjoy that car! It is beautiful. Message me if you want to talk further.

Gas gague fix. It's just two ground wires running to the fuel sender on the bottom of the tank. Just follow the wires from back of dash make sure they are properly grounded. Previous owner may have tampered with them.
$30 for new sender unit cjpony. You many not need it.
Also look into dakota digital gagues.
I owned a 76 Torino.. "The Starsky and Hutch" Had an Edelbrock carte motor in and was unreliable A.F.. But that's what you buy in to when you go for a classic, hence so many folks turn them classics in to trailer queens, they know what can and will go wrong. So, best way out? Spend the dough and make it a Beverly with 21st century innerts, Fuel Injection, true performance brakes, A/C, you name it, with this you'll add easily another 40 Large, but than you've got a car you can trust...... comes with the territory ;)

I have a 1968 fastback since I was 10'years old. I am in my early 40's. Never have had problems with the car,,,, just regular things , like a clutch replacement, booster , etc.... But it is just regular stuff that sooner or later will fail in any car. As I always say to people that do the "things that I hate about my car" if you hate it sooo much sell it.

Wow how cool is that to be 10y old and show you buddies in grade school "hey guy check out my car they be like your only 10 we call bs" hahaha that's awesome. My mom gave me her 1981 Z28 Camero it was a rare t-top 351 with forced air fire red and was the last year of that body style but I was a stupid kid growing up in the 90's that age of low rider mini truck so I gave it up for a mini truck to fit in with everyone else what a dumb move thing is years later people still knew me as Tim with the red Camero and I only drove it to school a couple time but no body remembered the sweet slammed mini truck with more speakers than seats lol. So yeah I made the wrong choice but I was a kid so I was stupid by nature.
U need to talk to Luke or thunderhead289 as he’s known on TH-cam. He daily drive classic cars. very knowledgeable about that stuff.

Before you put the new motor in, you will need to fix your front suspension. New ball joints, tie rods, steering box... Consider a swap to rack and pinion. All that play on your steering means your suspension is worn.
i own a 68 coupe and can relate to your issue's, but it's just part of it's charm man. A classic mustang is like a hot but annoying gf, one moment you hate it and the other moment you're just absolutely in love with it hahaha

One of Nates earlier video showed this car had 2 quarts of oil. So ya, previous owner didn't take care of it. Plus Nate should have checked the oil in front of the previous owner.
This is what owning a classic car is like. And the prices they are charging you get a car that has a ton of hidden bogies

As a classic car owner /restorer (67 mustang) sometimes you are at the mercy of what the previous owner did... When I first restored mine in high school, I had to deal with alot of crappy things previous owner did. So I remember it constantly breaking down and always having to fix something but driving it and always turning heads kinda makes up for it... Now, 20 years later, I am restoring it again and redoing just about everything that I did not have the funds to do back in high school. So now, I myself know what's been done and feel more comfortable driving it.. And yes a TON of speed bumps along my rebuild process. At the end of the day, it's a classic. 👍 💪
she might have issues but she looks darn good it's worth the troubles sometimes
I’m daily driving a 68 mustang coupe right now. No a/c, no power steering, no radio, drum manual brakes. Has electrical issue causing turn signals to not work. Still love it tho. A/C and disc brakes are the next must haves after fixing turn signals. Oh and those fuses are fun. Just have to slowly give her love.
So all those issues are upgradable.
Get a wire harness with modern blade style fuses conver to a one wire alternator with a internal voltage regulator. Convert over to a mustang 2 front end with a rack and pinion. Then throw the external coil and distributor in the trash and get an HEI distributor. The wire harness will fix all your other electrical issues And make the car reliable.
''hate'' is a pretty strong word to describe a classic. You get these problems with old cars, it's part of the process. You sound ungrateful when you say ''hate'' I'd love to have that car if you don't want it.

It happens man 🤘my 1970 Pontiac Firebird breaks down from time to time. Nothing beats a Classic Merican Muscle. The cool factor and being the Man in the streets I live in Northern California and it's 105 degree weather 😞

Reason why you have over spill is that the old cars don't work well with the nozzles. You have to listen to that high pitch sound as the fuel hits the neck. And fix your sending unit.

Well Nate, since you asked! My daily driver is a 77 F-100. One of the things I dislike about these older ford pickups (73-79) are the fuel necks! When ford decided to move the gas tank from behind the driver seat to under the bed they made the fuel neck do a almost 90° turn! Whenever I am filling up I have to hold the handle where it's just barely letting fuel flow so that it doesn't backsplash out like your mustang! Also if I want to fill my tank completely I have to shake the bed so that the air bubbles can vent out the neck (it has a vent tube but it's not very effective). This seems to be a very common thing with these trucks as well, I have a friend that has the same year truck and he has to do the same exact thing!
My daily driver is a 68 with a stroker 408 , as things break, I upgrade. My latest ( 2 yes ago ) was installing a Sniper EFI fuel injection system from tank to TBI

TBH the way you are holding the fuel handle it’s not odd it’s actually the way you where suppose to hold them back in the day, that’s why the car takes the gas better that way
Oh yeah the sputtering is probably the fuel filter. Older cars that sit alot have all these problems. Drive it and run it more. Fuel varnishes in the float bowls of the carb. Sitting bad....
Shiny paint only gets you so far. First thing you do when buying a 50 year old car is go over brakes and suspension. As far as parts go buying what’s cheap will cost you more when you have to buy the better part afterwards anyways. You should also change to larger wires for the battery at the very least use 4awg, better grounds would also help some of your electrical issues. Gas gauge is an easy fix on most old cars the sending unit either has a bad ground or just needs replaced
these are just pretty typical older car problems, like even 10-20 year old cars will have these issues with higher mileage.
Just think, when that new motor gets in there, hopefully soon, no more problems.

To fill my classic 65 I hold it in place but flip the auto shut off thing that’ll stop pumping when full so you don’t have to go in faith

The fantasy just ran into the reality! Your struggle is my entertainment. :) But if you’re struggling with this motor, the coyote is much more complicated. Also, if you are running into this many issues already you need to tear the whole car apart and find all the other hidden problems. Right now, you have no idea whats the previous owners are hiding.. My 67 Mustang, I had it a day before I tore it apart!

Also, when you fuel the car the reason it splits out gas is the fuel tank does have a vent tube.. As you put in the gas the air has no place to go and pressure builds.

I've got to bring up three BIG issues with classic(50+ year-old) cars . 1) Crap replacement parts, this is a bane to older cars which you can't just run to the dealer and get quality replacement parts. This is why owners should carry things like spare points, condensers etc. You'll never get the same quality of parts that came on the car 50 years ago. 2) After market/performance parts, just like autohouse parts, these too can be crap. Not to mention how hard it is to get them to "sync" with OEM components or other bolt-ons. 3) These cars are 50+ years old! Just like people, cars age. Sometimes they go to the doctor to reclaim some of their youth and things go wrong. Be it a botched job or faulty replacement parts, this just bring the car down more, making it harder on the next guy. Not to sound preachy, I really enjoy your videos and your taste in cars, but like a lot of others on here, I felt compelled to bring these things up not to lecture or criticize you but to hopefully embolden your love for this car. Sorry for going off so much, as you can tell, I could talk about classic cars all night and into the next morning. Just hate to see a fellow classic lover who is depressed with their ride. Keep on it and I promise you you'll have yourself a ride that will never disappoint!

Tbh I could never have a car like this lol like if I was giving up music, AC, safety and other things, the car has to sound like a freakin Shelby gt350 R lol this car doesn’t even sound as good as my GT. I work in a a BMW shop 40 years now, we have them come in with 10 problems $10,000 to repair,your car had to many people over the years working on it, and your wheel bearing hell it's not the car,that's from nobody greasing them
The car is 50-60 years old. You think putting a coyote in that car is going to fix all the problems your having. It might make it a bit more reliable as far as engine problems, but it may reveal/cause other issues.
Buying cheap parts for that car was your first mistake. Also, check your grounds.
If you go coyote swap.
Check out mike maier inc for suspension parts.
DSE also makes very nice suspension setup for these cars.
Even IF you don't go coyote. Look at those guys. Mike has a nice power steering upgrade to. Steer clear of most of the rack kits out there.
Look into swapping out all you elecrtical. Just do it. It's worth the money. You get 4xs the fuses updates everything to modern fuses.

I got a 68 cougar Prestine and after reverse engineering the ac. I can say vintage air ac can be done diy. Just buy basic tool set, electric drill and a small electric circular saw. It can be done. Just get your wires 12-10 awg and make them long. But the only issue I'm fixing with the ac is that the ac cut off when it reach 185 engine temp

Swap the motor drive train and suspension with all of newer stuff swap it with a 5.0

Now do you let it sit and cool down cuz there's something wrong, or how long you drive, etc. I have a 66 swapping the 289 with a 302 and was just curious I want it to last and if stopping like that helps than I don't mind, but thanks for the help if you get this😁

I got a 67 ford mustang Coupe a yr ago and had the same problem year later it's looking good and still need just a few more parts to replace over 4 G in new part and engine rebuild 289 I kept same engine it's looking good

Do you plan on upgrading the suspension. Sway bar.. might give you a better feeling when driving also look into tightening the screw on the power steering I believe it will help with the play in the steering wheel
Put a big block 390 or 428 in it don't Coyote swap it
Wanna make surer you have some subframe connectors before throwing a coyote at it. It will twist that body like a pretzel. 4 link suspension for the rear wouldn't be a bad idea either

Everyone knows the carbs need to be adjusted often. That's why you go with electronic fuel injection

GAS TANK PROBLEMS, YOU HAVE TO CHANGE THE NECK (THEY HAVE KITS THEIR COSTLY TO BUY) TO CHANGE THE NECK TO THE TANK. THE KIT WILL REPLACE THE NECK TO THE GAS TANK. AND YOU WILL HAVE TO FILL UP YOUR FROM INSIDE YOUR TRUNK. KIT WILL CAP OFF THE OLD NECK. YOU WILL HAVE TO CLOSE OFF YOUR ORIGINAL GAS CAP. AND YOU'LL HAVE TO FILL UP FROM INSIDE YOUR TRUNK FROM NOW ON. MUSTANG'S AND FALCON'S ALL HAVE THAT PROBLEM WITH FILLING UP GAS.THE ORIGINAL NECK OF THE GAS TANK IS TO LOW. AND YOU HAVE SPILLS AND ALL KIND'S OF PROBLEM'S FILLING UP YOUR GAS TANK. THE KIT TO FIX THIS PROBLEM ISN'T CHEAP. AND REPLACE YOUR OIL PUMP DRIVE SHAFT WITH AN (ARP OIL PUMP DRIVE SHAFT) IT'S WORTH BUYING IT WILL BREAK IF YOU HAVEN'T REPLACE IT YET. A LOT OF THESE CARS HAVEN'T BEEN RESTORED FRON THE GROUND UP. Just remember there’s nothing on these cars that can’t be replaced/fixed steering is superrrrrrr easy to fix on these classics
Ok.... First off you do realize that what you call a classic car was once all there was on the road. And they were reliable. Did coast to coast road trips. Got people to work every day. Its the upkeep. And you said it perfectly. No cheap parts. Not auto zone. You want Napa parts. That style rotor was used till the 90s. You dont pad slap those cars. You pack the bearings every brake job so the bearings dont get burned up from no grease. When you buy a classic car the first thing you do is replace or at least test those very things you have replaced. Before you start driving it regularly. Next is change your coolant and thermostat and change the trans fluid and filter. Trust me. Only use type f trans fluid in that Ford trans. All my hot rods have been nothing newer than 89. You can improve your fuel economy by better ignition parts. Mallory or accel cap and rotor with the copper contacts. Accel or msd 8 mm wires. A mallory or msd coil. The better the spark the more efficient it will burn the gas which equals better fuel mileage. It will stop night and day better if you keep your rear brakes adjusted. With the car on Jack stands in neutral when you adjust the rear brakes there should be a slight drag when you spin the wheel.
at the end of the day it still looks just stunning and sounds even better, i would say its still worth the trouble.
Also for the brakes, switch to manual its way better than power

@@charliesierra6919 not sure if those were skinny, you usually won't here this but back in the day these automobiles all had elegant thin tires that honestly turned real well! 50 years later and people expect the same performance and perfect brand new working order...its their own naive idiocy and then they go on to blame old automobiles on being less advanced, but yet single handedly prove that they work pretty well for being 50 to 60 years old.
@@WitchKing-Of-Angmar Yep I remember back in the day when these first came out. About to turn 64 so I really appreciate the styling and performance of the 60s and early 70s cars. I drive a black 14' Mustang Gt and while it's fast and cool and all I really think all the sensors and computer crap are just more things to go wrong/add weight. I really miss my 63' Buick with the vent windows, my 72' Malibu, 67' Coronet, 70' Duster etc. At least I could work on them. Plus the metal on these new cars is so thin they dent if you look at them too hard.
@@charliesierra6919 your right, at 82, I have had a plethora and I mean a whole catalogue of automobiles through my life, from my miniature assortment a Not very miniature 1913 Chevrolet Royal mail roadster, to a quite significantly sized Mercury colony park of 1973 that I rode all the way from Manhattan to Florida in. My wife used to blame our trip for the oil crisis as our party joke.

When the vehicle is running on a 1985 and prior when you let the car run off just the battery it will immediately burn the voltage regulator it says it in the Manuel
That car is beautiful, would you consider doing a full swap with the 2015 mustang chassis and stuff like “b is for build”was doing before that company took it away from them?
