    Hey, great video again! The horror is defintely well done in Attack on Titan, I can especially remember the first few episodes of the second Season, where they were going around the wall to check if there was a hole somewhere. Even though I kind of expected that they wouldn't find anything, the suspense was absolutely great and it even became one of my favourite episodes just because of the whole atmosphere. But personally, I'm a bit more engaged in the mystery, especially since they do such a great job at giving the viewer enough hints to come up with own theories.
    Anyway, I'm really grateful you did this video. Attack on Titan is among my favourite anime ever and although I know that it is insanely popular, it doesn't get nearly enough critical acclaim in my opinion and is considered by many people to be something for "casuals", thats why I'm very happy if someone takes his time to analyze it.

      Random Username The first few episodes of Season 2 were actually one of the biggest reasons why I made the video. There’s this level of uneasiness you get out of it that really makes Attack on Titan feel special and different. From a creative viewpoint, I’ve always thought that the mystery and horror is intrinsically tied. Stories that tap into the unknown like death, or life beyond Earth, or mysticism can at times be terrifying. It’s our own way of finding answers to a nagging question we may never get answers to. Attack on Titan just pushes the envelope on that mystery aspect and that alone has me invested!

    I take that what is most engaging in attack on titan are actually it's mysteries.
    The horror in not knowing anything about the titans works greatly in favor of the mystery vibe, but this one aspect lasts until season 2 only. By the 2nd half of the first season you can already see that humans are the ones behind this and those people from outside the walls are the enemies, but I don't think that makes the story any less fascinating. Also, it was great touch to add that ost at end of the video.

    • @NerdyShenanigans
      @NerdyShenanigans  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      クソナード I agree with you on so many levels. First half of season one definitely taps into the ideas of the video more so than the second half. The second half has that at some level, but different elements are added to change the landscape completely. Then, the first half of the second season recaptures that same uneasy energy.
      What I will say too that many great apocalyptic tension filled stories do is study what people do. Books like “The Road” or comics like “The Walking Dead” create a situation of scarcity and out of it, the greatest horror becomes people. A cautionary tale of what we’re capable of when push comes to shove. Perhaps Attack on Titan is going for a similar aspect in its own way. Albeit, they’re a tad more explosive about it lol

    Hey John, I've been following you since your Kimi no Na wa video and I have to say, you're getting better with each new analysis. (However, the Kimi no Na wa is my personal favorite since I loved the movie so much).
    With each new video, your editing is becoming smoother and your transitions into your next talking points have become more organic as well.
    There's much less fluff, and you're using less examples when drawing from other works, all of which is a great improvement as it lends more credibility to your own opinions while still keeping the well researched and fitting quotes.
    I truly hope you're able to gain more subscribers, because your videos are continually informative and entertaining.
    If you've read this far, I'd like to ask a few questions before your channel does (hopefully) blow up:
    1) You mentioned you work full time, so what got you interested in making anime/Western entertainment analysis videos in the first place?
    2) Do you have any prior experience in research (like from school or work?) Because the way you use sources is a little more on the scholarly side and reminds me of when I wrote research papers in university.
    3) Are there any anime TH-camrs you get inspiration from? Similarly, any you would recommend watching?
    4) Finally, other than the ones you've made videos about, what are some of your favorite anime? (Better yet, if you have a mal, I'd love to see your rankings)
    Congratulations on the recent surge in subscribers, and I'll be looking forward to your next video!

      Smartjedi hey there! Great seeing you on here again! ^^ I've taken your critical feedback in the earlier videos it's stuck with me since!
      Great questions by the way!
      1) I've always had an interest in anime/western entertainment analysis. It was just something I did in conversation with friends. So I figured why not take something I do anyways and turn it into videos. I do video production full time in corporate business styles, so TH-cam is a creative outlet for me to experiment and try out new ideas stylistically when I normally wouldn't.
      2) My experience in research comes from college and at some level from work. As you can probably tell from my videos, I love videos that bridges the psychology of how we think and feel when we watch an anime, show, or movie.
      3) My most favorite anime TH-camrs has to be Pause and Select, Super Eyepatch Wolf, and Under the Scope Reviews. They don't upload frequently, but my god their production quality is off the roof! You could just tell they put just as much love in their editing as well as their writing. In terms of style and slickness, I resonate quite a bit with how Vox, Captain Kristian, and Nerdwriter1 do their videos. I want to see more anime analysis videos done in this sort of style, and few I feel manage to pull off this sort of style as effectively.
      4) Oh gosh there's so many! Gurren Lagann, FMA Brotherhood, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Spirited Away, Code Geass, The Boy and the Beast, and Mob Psycho 100 just to name a few off the top of my head!

    • @Smartjedi
      @Smartjedi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The improvements have been great to witness! Your background context helps make sense of the way you structure your videos.
      I can definitely see how you'd like Pause and Select haha. Joe has to be the most scholarly TH-camr I watch, and that isn't limited to anime analysis creators either.
      Thanks for answering the questions, and hopefully we'll see a video on one of your favorites sometime soon.

    Early to middle season one spoilers here.
    The thing that sold me on AoT was the presentation of the titans. The titans aren’t just powerful-mowing down humans at will without opposition in the first few episodes-they’re terrifying.
    A long-ago analysis on the AnimeSuki forum pointed out that the titans break the spirits of the people they’re about to eat. Hannes initially intended to kill the Smiling Titan, but Hannes’ spirit broke when he confronted the titan, so Hannes grabbed Eren and Mikasa and ran. Eren’s mother urged her children to abandon her, but once the titan actually grabbed Eren’s mom she had to stop herself from begging Eren and Mikasa to stay. (Maybe that example doesn’t hold up, but...)
    I find it’s a theme that shows up repeatedly, from the terrified citizens of Eren’s town to the desperate begging and helplessness and curbstomp of Eren’s squad on their first mission, and beyond that to the panic among the surviving military rank-and-file when Trost is breached.
    I’ve seen antagonists comparable to the titans in power who are far less threatening. Going off the DCAU I’ve got Mongul, Giganta, Kalibak, Lobo. Those are all capable villains who challenge our heroes, but none of them dominate a scene the way the titans do. For all his strength and toughness, Mongul never inspires the sheer despairing horror that the titans do when they attack the towns inside the walls. Because, for all Mongul’s power he never becomes as threatening as the titans who wantonly slaughter defenseless and terrified people.

    In general I don't like horror, at least Western horror films? Where it's terrifying to be terrifying, rather than to amplify the story and emotions. I love Tokyo Ghoul and Parasyte in addition to Attack on Titan, and the horror, especially the tension, as you've mentioned absolutely adds to the emotions and relatability of the characters. Which seems ridiculous in some ways that we emphathize more with characters because of the supernatural causes they are fighting.
    Also, awesome videos, started watching with your Kimi No Na Wa analysis, and I love these formal analysis of anime as the depth of many shows are often overlooked.

    • @NerdyShenanigans
      @NerdyShenanigans  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Salocin097 thanks for checking out the AoT video! Tokyo Ghoul would've been another really great example when it comes to how horror can be used to amplify a world and narrative! I always appreciate how horror techniques is used in stories that don't necessarily lean so heavily on horror. Many directors I admire actually come from horror!

    My problem with Attack on Titan's horror is that it shattered its suspension of disbelief the moment Eren was revealed to be part titan.
    I used to be terrified of the titans. They seemed like a legitimate threat that had overpowered humanities elite Survey Corps and were even capable of killing the main protagonist.
    But with Eren becoming a super titan and with Levi treating them like grass under a lawn mower, how can I see them as nothing but league of legends minions that kill any character that just sucks at the game if they're lucky.
    Does anyone really care about whether the walls crumble and the main cast dies or not? Does anyone care about what secret potion is hidden in the basement? Or are people more concerned about the theatrics of the show when it flexes it's epic soundtrack and dynamic animation every chance it gets.
    If Attack on Titan's horror relies solely on instinctual fear rather than accompanying it with skillful writing, then it certainly didn't help me believe that I was watching a show about humanities survival.

      [SPOILERS ALERT]
      First of all, I apologise in antecipation for my rusty english, I'm not a native speaker. But coming to the matter, I don't know if you read the mangá, if you don't, stop reading to avoid spoilers. The intrincacy of the horror and suspense in the manga, comes from the brillhant writing with absolute realistical features delivered by the autor. The vibe and atmosphere that involves, for example, the arc of recovery of the mary wall, is a tension that relies on the actual iminent extermination of the whole humanity in the case of failure. Right at the beginning of the confront, all their antecipated plans fails and the Survey cops have to improvise. In the moment that the shitstorm starts to go down, is easy to see the despair taking the heart of every recruit, and all hope ending to every man, even Comandant Erwin, when facing an inescapable death. And then again, bcuz of the brilhant writring, he abandon all hope and face his fear to lose all his dreams to deliver one of the most inspiring speeches of war that I ever read, convincing all the recruits to follow him as bait and charge directly to death, and even in this part all you can see in the recruits eyes is terror, some of them start to cry like kids, other start to puke. Anyway, I have to say that I feel absolutly imersed in this situations, to me this manga is topclass suspension/drama material speaking of graphic content.

  • @Xanderqwerty123
    @Xanderqwerty123 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Slight spoilers for the manga :
    Love how the true enemy isn't just titans, in wall humans, the shifters, or the governments of the world. It is a combination of all to make the heroes' situation feel hopeless whenever they get a leg up. Even when a bigger enemy is shown, there isa darkness behind the new foe, with the current big bad being the underdog in a war far beyond the scope of anything the heroes have seen thus far. The escalation and mystery makes the story seem so different from the start, but still retains the feeling of despair and oddly fitting optimism

    Horror is ABSOLUTELY an element of Attack on Titan.
    An existentialist horror.
    The horror of what mankind/human nature is capable of and pursues.
    The symbolism of the human form literally transforming into these ineffable monsters who cannot speak for themselves.
    The horror of what we resort to for survival and freedom...
