Imagine being human and then becoming a machine with the memories and feelings of being human being. Then finding that you are a machine only with memories of human feelings and the senses of loss of a life before you once experienced. How tragic. Great Short, but also a sad outcome.
Rewatching this one is really interesting. The dialogue about the "checkup" and "running out of memory" makes a lot more sense. Seems like at some point in the past she used a drug that caused her to lose focus on a spacewalk and seriously injure herself. I suspect she was saved and given a new body, either by her own wishes, (so she could see her family) or against her wishes (she was that imortant). From then on, she's been trapped on the space station for over 100 years. Sounds like she refuses to get the "upgrade" the Cid guy talks about which will likely wipe her memories, which are becoming unreliable now that she's so old and has so many. As a computer she has an "overdrive" function that seems to replicate the effects of that old drug she took, but also causes her to occasionally relive the horrifying death and rebirth that she endured. Everyone she knows and loves is dead, so she tries to use her addiction to off herself, but she's watched too closely and is brought back each time more damaged than the last. There are lots of details that support these ideas. She only ever hears Cid over a radio, she isn't seen exiting the airlock, she accesses the ship systems directly, she can subconsciouslyaccess audio files stored on the ship's system. It appears that Cid had to emergency shut her down so he could bring her body back inside. He doesn't care for her, has stopped viewing her as human, and treats her like a tool.
