About student discipline, I think this is more of a recent problem. Growing up in Korea, there was A LOT of physical discipline. This became an issue only over the recent years and they pretty much banned discipline all together. Since the parents grew up with teachers with rods (my P.E. teacher used to carry a hockey stick around and hit students whenever they “misbehaved”) they are really sensitive when it comes to punishment. There is no such thing as a happy medium in this country 😂
@@taylerwithane I had wondered about this because, yes, I have always imagined that students are better behaved in South Korea.😂But you're right, kids are kids everywhere. I had thought for some reason that they still used corporal punishment which I'd also imagined kept kids behaving respectfully because they didn't want to be embarrassed. So that whole section was really surprising!
ahh that makes sense because i was so shocked when I saw some of the beatings teachers gave in kdramas lol and then I heard her say the teachers were scared to punish and I was really confused
Like you I've learned to teach while in Japan on JET, a similar program. And I relate significantly to what you've said about the job in general. I've had to get information in a proactive way, having to ask or get the info myself. For phonics I recommend a program someone told me about called Oxford Phonics World.

Try Hooked On Phonics! I used it to teach my 3 children to read & it’s very effective. They were reading before they entered school & now they are all grown & all 3 went onto Ivy League schools.

I just randomly found out about this surfing the web. I'm in my late 20s going on 30s soon, and only recently started my journey to study psychology and I've also learned doing something else after my bachelors would not be bad. I've watched a lot of videos, since teaching would be nice for me and I am glad someone like yourself has been teaching a long time compared to some who only go to Korea for odd reasons only to move back. I been into Korean music well over 15 years and finally learning Korean well on my own and buying more Korean books. I can read and pronounce hangeul easily. A coding friend of mine who is a distanced friend also said she wants to get her bachelors like me and go to South Korea. I know things won't be perfect and I'd be a black foreigner but you make it seem very easy going and it doesn't too hectic at all. You seem to have the best outlook on youtube considering this position. Do you think you want to do this for a long time? Or fully go back to the U.S.? I know you may not see this comment but thank you fro your videos. It's been such a life saver.

Your concern about student discipline, it's the same thing here in my country especially when you're teaching in a private school. I was always careful when I reprimand my students otherwise they would take it differently and later parents would come to you and have you explain the situation to them. I swear I experienced different types of parents already. Stay strong! Teaching is not an easy job! Take care and stay healthy out there. 😇😊

I'm half Korean, but I feel like I should know Korean before I do this because I am Half. I wonder what it'll be like being half Korean as an English Teacher in Korea. I know sometimes, Korean people who are from the states who go to Korea can be scrutinized if their Korean isn't that good, just because it's expected that we should be fully fluent. For powerpoints and word just use chrome! If u have a google account you can use all those programs for free in the browser and if ur browser is in english the programs should be too! Also you can download the files to desktop and itll ask to convert it to whatever year you have on the desktop.
Elementary school is why I left 😂. But after being home in the US for a year and and half. I'm ready to go back to Korea lol. Whew chile and being the last to know things 😂😂😂. I remember there was a whole festival that they forgot to tell me about then I had to preform 😂😂😂🤦🏾♀️.
Great vid. Very much wanted to know the situation out there. I'm currently in Japan and the school life seems very similar although we're now expected to make lesson resources/plans without any resources at work because the Japanese don't trust foreigners using the internet or a computer at work. They also get you to teach their lessons then beg you for your materials even though they have unlimited resources and are allowed to use any of the facilities available at school. We work around 43 hours a week but are given a part time contract so they don't have to give us any of the benefits of someone with a full time contract etc etc.
1:25, Phonics they chose Her to teach maybe is because She speaks colloquial English very well. Herself, as a Native English Speaker of the United States probably would not know why they chose her for that course. Most of us would be like " Why do you want me?". However is was a Compliment. A Compliment that by Nature herself and Most Americans would not understand. It meant they admired you so much that they wanted You to now introduce and teach Native Korean adults "Phonetic" American English. I know its strange about teaching contracts. IN THE UNITED STATES, it would be ILLEGAL for any School to do that. However it was actually Compliment
I speak very little Korean and actually it doesn't make too much of a difference in my life or job here. Of course, it would make everything a lot easier, but I get by 😊
The computer thing sounds like so much FUN. I'm a Mac user as well (not as long as you've been one), but I still know my way around a PC. We'll see how that goes. I just read a comment below that mentioned not being able to use Microsoft Office...good grief. Thank you for really providing examples of the whole "there's always a change and you likely won't know ahead of time". I've read about this a lot in my research, but I hadn't read/seen it explained in this way. Anyhoo...I hope you're well!
I absolutely LOVE your videos! I'm taking my TEFL course right now and I'm graduating college with my BA in Communications and Media in May of 2021. I used to be a substitute teacher and I originally was taking my degree in Education (but decided Comms would fit me better). I'm planning on staying in Korea once I move there for probably 10 or so years depending on how much I like it. I've also been independently learning Korean for 2+ years in preparation so I don't get lost once I first move there and for when travelling in Korea. Thank you so much for the videos! They make my decision much more easier. I'm hopeful that we find a vaccine for the virus soon so I can make my move to Korea. P.S- do you have any videos on things you needed to prepare for Korea? Ex: money, visa, etc. I'm just curious as to how much I should save up and when I should start applying for EPIK as I want to move to Korea right after I graduate.

To briefly answer your questions now though, you should plan to save at least $1000 to bring with you once you move to Korea as you probably won't get your first paycheck until a month after you get there. Also, you should take into account the added costs of the application itself. As far as when to start applying for EPIK, a common rule of thumb is the earlier to when applications open the better as it will help your chances getting your preferred placement (though not guaranteed).

You mentioned you have to get medicine every other month or something like that , my question is is the healthcare ok for you ? As in are u as comfortable getting care there as you would in America with price and doctors knowing how to treat or diagnose you ? My husband tells me it’s more expensive for foreigners but I have been reading that it’s not . What’s your opinion?
Yes, I love Korean healthcare! I find it much more affordable overall and the doctors are very knowledgeable. They put high emphasis on the medical field here. Korea definitely one of the best healthcare systems in the world 😊 The only pain was trying to transfer all my medical records from home to Korea.
Im on a binge so excuse me popping up but the parent discipline thing omg!! i thought it was just a training center thing because the parents pay so much money, but no its just a cultural thing and a problem in oubic and private schools ToT
Another note on the challenge of computers, most of the public schools now don’t allow Microsoft word or PowerPoint. So you have to use that dumpster fire that is HanCom.

When I was in high school my English teacher from Canada (Mr... I don't remember his surname but it's definitely French origin) used to hit students hands with a stick if they don't behave lol. Some students were really really rude so I kinda understand him. Plus we became really good friends because we had kinda similar taste in music. I heard that he's still teaching in Korea. I hope he's doing fine :)
I'm currently 13 years old. I've been thinking about teaching English in South Korea for as long as i could remember. Hey I love your videos and you actually sparked my interest in teaching abroad! Quick question you said there’s 26 vacation days but also that you can take off just when you want? So are there only a certain times of the year you can utilize those days?
I have a question about the letter of reccomendation. I understand they need an ink signature ultimately, but when you first put in your application online do they accept a PDF of the letter, unsigned, then when you go to send in your final paperwork, it is not until then they need an ink signature? I was told an electronic signature won't be accepted but how else to you signa PDF? Are they expecting no signature on the PDF version?
Ask your school's computer dude to change everything to English! It will annoy them but they either already know how to do it or are savvy enough to figure it out.
Haha sometimes that is even a struggle. Honestly, I've gotten so used to working in the Microsoft Office programs in Korean, sometimes I even forget that I am lol

Hi! In my opinion, the tefl course was pretty straightforward and they offer a lot of them online. To be honest, most people come here with very limited teaching experience and a lot of it is learn as you go, but having some teaching/tutoring experience definitely helps.

I've seen a few apartment your videos (yours included😊) and I'm just wondering how you manage all your belongings when moving between cities, one of the youtubers mentioned that she sells her things and some leave their things behind. Altonia Mohamed I did a combination of both. Unfortunately I moved right when the pandemic was at its height here in Korea, so I didn’t sell as much as I wanted and left more stuff behind than I initially planned (the new teacher who moved in after me was grateful though). I then shipped the stuff I was bringing with me through the Korean Post which was actually pretty cheap and brought the rest with me in my suitcases. There are also moving services you can use to move all your stuff, but that wasn’t available to me at the time due to the virus.

Wow! I am so surprised that it is more difficult to reprimand difficult students in Korea than in North America. Back in the day the Korean students had the utmost respect for teachers. That sounds like a change for the worst.

Hi! There are always more positions available in spring than there are in fall. Also, there are rumors EPIK is cancelling the August intake this year (just for 2020), so I think moving forward you would have a better chance starting in February than in August just because more schools will be hiring teachers in Spring.

I know the EPIK application requires you to put your GPA, but I’m not sure how much weight they give it when making their final decision. I’m also not sure about being a social worker here. I know you need a specific type of visa if you want to do anything besides teaching and it’s pretty hard to get unless you meet certain requirements. And yes, a majority of job involves preparing lessons and teaching your students English. Your school may have other events that as the native English teacher they want you to be part of, but that’s on a school by school basis.

Nope not at all! I didn't complete my course until around the time I got my placement. I believe there is a specific time you need it by during the application process, but I can't remember it off the top of my head. You do need proof that you are taking the course though to submit with your application I believe.
It sounds interesting, but seems you don't have much of a social life. I hope this is made up in salary which I did not hear you mentioned. Anyway I always say Love A Teacher❤

Great vid. Very much wanted to know the situation out there. I'm currently in Japan and the school life seems very similar although we're now expected to make lesson resources/plans without any resources at work because the Japanese don't trust foreigners using the internet or a computer at work. They also get you to teach their lessons then beg you for your materials even though they have unlimited resources and are allowed to use any of the facilities available at school. We work around 43 hours a week but are given a part time contract so they don't have to give us any of the benefits of someone with a full time contract etc etc.

1:25, Phonics they chose Her to teach maybe is because She speaks colloquial English very well. Herself, as a Native English Speaker of the United States probably would not know why they chose her for that course. Most of us would be like " Why do you want me?". However is was a Compliment. A Compliment that by Nature herself and Most Americans would not understand. It meant they admired you so much that they wanted You to now introduce and teach Native Korean adults "Phonetic" American English. I know its strange about teaching contracts. IN THE UNITED STATES, it would be ILLEGAL for any School to do that. However it was actually Compliment
It will be great for your cv to have such a wide variety of teaching experiences.

I speak very little Korean and actually it doesn't make too much of a difference in my life or job here. Of course, it would make everything a lot easier, but I get by 😊

The computer thing sounds like so much FUN. I'm a Mac user as well (not as long as you've been one), but I still know my way around a PC. We'll see how that goes. I just read a comment below that mentioned not being able to use Microsoft Office...good grief.

I absolutely LOVE your videos! I'm taking my TEFL course right now and I'm graduating college with my BA in Communications and Media in May of 2021. I used to be a substitute teacher and I originally was taking my degree in Education (but decided Comms would fit me better). I'm planning on staying in Korea once I move there for probably 10 or so years depending on how much I like it. I've also been independently learning Korean for 2+ years in preparation so I don't get lost once I first move there and for when travelling in Korea. Thank you so much for the videos! They make my decision much more easier. I'm hopeful that we find a vaccine for the virus soon so I can make my move to Korea.
P.S- do you have any videos on things you needed to prepare for Korea? Ex: money, visa, etc. I'm just curious as to how much I should save up and when I should start applying for EPIK as I want to move to Korea right after I graduate.

To briefly answer your questions now though, you should plan to save at least $1000 to bring with you once you move to Korea as you probably won't get your first paycheck until a month after you get there. Also, you should take into account the added costs of the application itself. As far as when to start applying for EPIK, a common rule of thumb is the earlier to when applications open the better as it will help your chances getting your preferred placement (though not guaranteed).

Hello Tayler, I just discovered your channel, I watched the road trip that you took with your boyfriend. I really enjoyed seeing the beautiful sights. Is he also an English teacher? Where are you from in the states and what did you do before teaching? You are a beautiful person.
You mentioned you have to get medicine every other month or something like that , my question is is the healthcare ok for you ? As in are u as comfortable getting care there as you would in America with price and doctors knowing how to treat or diagnose you ? My husband tells me it’s more expensive for foreigners but I have been reading that it’s not . What’s your opinion?
Yes, I love Korean healthcare! I find it much more affordable overall and the doctors are very knowledgeable. They put high emphasis on the medical field here. Korea definitely one of the best healthcare systems in the world 😊 The only pain was trying to transfer all my medical records from home to Korea.

Another note on the challenge of computers, most of the public schools now don’t allow Microsoft word or PowerPoint. So you have to use that dumpster fire that is HanCom.

When I was in high school my English teacher from Canada (Mr... I don't remember his surname but it's definitely French origin) used to hit students hands with a stick if they don't behave lol. Some students were really really rude so I kinda understand him. Plus we became really good friends because we had kinda similar taste in music. I heard that he's still teaching in Korea. I hope he's doing fine :)

Yes for sure!! It’s an amazing experience and most people come here as first-time teachers. I feel like you actually are more qualified as a bilingual elementary education major than most of the people coming to teach here lol

Hey I love your videos and you actually sparked my interest in teaching abroad! Quick question you said there’s 26 vacation days but also that you can take off just when you want? So are there only a certain times of the year you can utilize those days?
I have a question about the letter of reccomendation. I understand they need an ink signature ultimately, but when you first put in your application online do they accept a PDF of the letter, unsigned, then when you go to send in your final paperwork, it is not until then they need an ink signature? I was told an electronic signature won't be accepted but how else to you signa PDF? Are they expecting no signature on the PDF version?

Ask your school's computer dude to change everything to English! It will annoy them but they either already know how to do it or are savvy enough to figure it out.
Haha sometimes that is even a struggle. Honestly, I've gotten so used to working in the Microsoft Office programs in Korean, sometimes I even forget that I am lol
Has it ever been a scary thought not knowing if your going to be good at? I’m a senior in college and this is my dream but I get nervous with this. I like teaching and working with other but I’m not a education students so not knowing is scary.
Yes at times, but at the end of the day I knew I would work hard to do my best at the job and if all else fails, the contract is only for a year.

Hi! In my opinion, the tefl course was pretty straightforward and they offer a lot of them online. To be honest, most people come here with very limited teaching experience and a lot of it is learn as you go, but having some teaching/tutoring experience definitely helps.

I've seen a few apartment your videos (yours included😊) and I'm just wondering how you manage all your belongings when moving between cities, one of the youtubers mentioned that she sells her things and some leave their things behind. How do you manage yours in this aspect?
Altonia Mohamed I did a combination of both. Unfortunately I moved right when the pandemic was at its height here in Korea, so I didn’t sell as much as I wanted and left more stuff behind than I initially planned (the new teacher who moved in after me was grateful though). I then shipped the stuff I was bringing with me through the Korean Post which was actually pretty cheap and brought the rest with me in my suitcases. There are also moving services you can use to move all your stuff, but that wasn’t available to me at the time due to the virus.

Wow! I am so surprised that it is more difficult to reprimand difficult students in Korea than in North America. Back in the day the Korean students had the utmost respect for teachers. That sounds like a change for the worst.
Hey, I was planning on applying to start next year before everything happened? Do you think that it'll be harder to get hired right now? Or that starting in February versus August will lower my chances?
Hi! There are always more positions available in spring than there are in fall. Also, there are rumors EPIK is cancelling the August intake this year (just for 2020), so I think moving forward you would have a better chance starting in February than in August just because more schools will be hiring teachers in Spring.

Okay here it goes it would be so helpful if you can reply for I can have ideas about to do. Does my gpa matter? To be able to get a job over there in South Korea to be a teacher?Also do you know if I as a foreigner can be child welfare social work over there? Idk if called that or something else? But back to the teaching job all you do is teach English to students is that all or is there more to it? Sorry if the last question sound dumb I really want to be able to live in South Korea permanently and be Korean resident!
I know the EPIK application requires you to put your GPA, but I’m not sure how much weight they give it when making their final decision. I’m also not sure about being a social worker here. I know you need a specific type of visa if you want to do anything besides teaching and it’s pretty hard to get unless you meet certain requirements. And yes, a majority of job involves preparing lessons and teaching your students English. Your school may have other events that as the native English teacher they want you to be part of, but that’s on a school by school basis.

I love your channel!! I’m planning to apply to Epik for the next spring semester. At the time of application i wouldn’t have completed by TEFL yet but it will be in process. Do you think that this is a problem?
Nope not at all! I didn't complete my course until around the time I got my placement. I believe there is a specific time you need it by during the application process, but I can't remember it off the top of my head. You do need proof that you are taking the course though to submit with your application I believe.
It sounds interesting, but seems you don't have much of a social life. I hope this is made up in salary which I did not hear you mentioned. Anyway I always say Love A Teacher❤
