    My experience has been a bit different in regards to lesson planning. At my previous school I was expected to take the lead in class, so I prepared full lesson plans on my own. For a while, I didn't even have a coteacher! So the responsibility for planning was completely on me. In my current school, we do share planning a lot more evenly but I still take the lead at times.

    I'm in my second year of college and I'm thinking of getting a job in south Korea for English. (I'm getting a degree in education) what worries me is that based on my appearance (tattoos and piercings) I wouldnt even be considered. I use to work at an elementary school and kindergarten before the pandemic hit and they never told me anything. I mean, I can always take out my piercings and cover up my tattoos but I'm just worried about them not even bothering with me 😅😅 your channel is so informative and interesting it motivates me to keep going towards my goal c:

    • @taylerwithane
      @taylerwithane  4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I would just take out your piercings and cover up your tattoos as much as possible during your interview. EPIK does require you to state on your application if you have any tattoos (piercings I believe too) and at school dress code definitely prohibits you from showing any and you can only have simple ear lobe piercings. They're really strict about that here. Good luck with everything!

    • @marianadallaire7429

      @@taylerwithane I'm also thinking about becoming an EPIK teacher and I'd be very interested to know more about the dress code for school. I have tattoos but I'm not too worried about that since I can cover them up, however I'm also curious about dyed hair and how you're supposed to dress, this kind of things... Anyway thank you for sharing your experience in these videos!

    I'm going into my last year of university and am applying for the EPIK program next spring! I'm super excited about applying and going abroad again (I studied abroad in Japan this semester), but I'm also very nervous about the interview and sturdiness of my application. I do have teaching experience in the line of museum work, but I haven't taken any education courses. I also have green hair, so I'm a little worried how that might be perceived in an interview.😂 I love your videos! I came across them when I was still unsure if I should pursue going to Korea or not, and I feel like they really gave me a push in the right direction. :-)

    • @taylerwithane
      @taylerwithane  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm so glad! 😊 The lack of education courses should be no problem as long as you have your TEFL certification and a bachelor's degree. And having even the slightest bit of teaching experience helps and you should emphasize it in your interview. As far as your hair, I know if you get accepted you will have to wear a more natural color to go along with school policy (they'll probably mention this in your interview).

I know it is intended to work on school stuff I.e. lesson plans, but when you dont have much to do, can you do other things at your desk? Does it mean you literally have to be at your desk or can you be doing other things as long as you are on campus? Just curious. Thanks for the information! I hope I get selected!!! :)

  • @adngbsn

    When you say you don't need lesson plans/they don't need to be detailed; is it that you personally don't feel like you need a plan as you can sort of just have a general plan and go with the flow of the class, or is it that there's usually some kind of plan/curriculum already in place?
    I'm just asking as I'm the sort of person that really likes to plan ahead and know what I'm doing haha

    • @taylerwithane
      @taylerwithane  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's usually some kind of curriculum already in place, usually following a textbook. I can still plan ahead for my classes as long as I know which lesson of the textbook we're on (which usually just involves me checking in with my co-teacher about next class). At my old school we followed such a formula that I was able to plan activities for my lessons 2-3 weeks in advance.

    What i have found interesting in that I know of a guy who has been teaching ESL with the Bay area for 12 years(3 generation Mexican american), certified and allowed to work at high schools and community college levels....4 letters of recommendations from headmasters and deans of schools and EPIK would not accept yet one of his friends who was 23 years old and just graduated with a degree in visual arts was able to get into EPIK a couple of years ago. I learned working in Seoul for 8 years way back when, doesn't matter your experience, references or recommendations, a degree and your appearance will guarantee a job in ROK and Japan. Even working at an international school in Thailand, the experience and recommendations from prior schools weigh down far greater than a degree in .....from....college.

      With EPIK no, but you can put a city preference on you application. You have no guarantee of getting it though. Hello, I have been talking to a recruiter and they said EPIK is a first come first serve system. So having that degree would improve your chances of being accepted into the program but if someone without the degree specific to education but met all the other qualifications had gotten their application well before you, they would be more likely to get their preferred placement. But also EPIK released an update for Fall 2020 related to COVID-19 and it may be that for the next two intakes they are going to give preference to the teachers who are already working with EPIK because many MOEs and POEs are saying they want few or no new EPIK teachers for this year. They said the more flexible you are with where you could be placed, the better your chances right now.

      Not at all. Daegu is one of the major cities in Korea. Also, it’s really easy to travel around the country. Seoul was less than 2 hours away by train (though I didn’t go too often or felt the need to).

    Haii I still have another year left at university but am thinking of teaching in Korea - I've been wondering if it was easy for you to make friends/have people you can hang out with or travel with in your free time? I'm quite shy/introverted anyway haha but am wondering if it's a bit lonely when you move initially? (Love your videos btw!)

    • @taylerwithane
      @taylerwithane  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Actually, orientation was one of my favorite parts about the EPIK program because you meet soooo many new people when you first arrive. I made so many new friends during the 2 week orientation. I tend to be a bit more introverted too, but it helped knowing we were all new to Korea and this experience, so we bonded that way. There are also lots of expat groups on Facebook that you can join and meet people that way too 😊

    @taylerwithane .I’m 29 and have applied for a bachelors degree program in (Early Childhood Education). English is the official language of my country. I was taught English from nursery school till senior high school and after. I can read and write English. I would love to move to Korea after graduating. But my major concern is (My Age) because by the time I’m done I will be somewhere 33 , though I look younger in face and body. I’m into fitness as well. Any advice will be appreciated

    can i ask a quick question? i was wondering if me wanting to do EPIK makes it seem like i’m obsessed with south korea, so basically a koreaboo. i like kpop and ive grown to like the culture and i would love to help teach students about the english language. i’m not trying to become korean, the only reason i want to do this is because i want to help students. most of my friends (who aren’t into kpop) think this makes me a crazy fan obsessed with south korea, so i would like to know your take on it if you don’t mind.

English teachers are always in demand , you respect the culture and have an interest, yes kpop may have opened you to the culture and everything but you want to help make a difference and that's positivity and kindness so please don't get discouraged !

    Tayler: is EPIK saying 22 teaching “hours” as in 22/60min hours? If class is 45 min long that’s 30 classes a week!!!!
    22 x 60min=1320 / 45min= 29.3.

    • @taylerwithane
      @taylerwithane  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually each class you have is considered a "teaching hour." So 22 teaching hours per week, is 22 classes per week (in my case 22, 40min classes since I teach elementary school).

    I'll be moving to korea soon due to my husband being in the military and i have a degree in teaching. Are there any other ways of becoming a teacher not through the EPIK program or would you still suggest this program even though id be living there?

    • @taylerwithane
      @taylerwithane  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Since you will be moving with your husband, I recommend looking into hagwons (private schools). You get more control over the location of your job, so you can choose a place closer to where your husband is stationed. There might be other opportunities for you too (other than EPIK or hagwons) since you have a degree in teaching, but unfortunately I don't have too much information about that.
