Kudos to you, Steve, for inviting us into your own practice session while you experiment with a “different swing.” Much appreciated and it was fun to watch your honest reactions. I’m playing to a 9 these days and probably, like many of your viewers, I too have experimented with different swing concepts and feels. I agree completely. Tried the Moe Norman set up and it just is not a natural set up. Once you try to get it right you get thins and although it sometimes goes straight be prepared to lose distancel. Currently I’m all over the place. And today just confirmed how dangerous it is to fiddle around with this method. It was 14 holes before I struck a decent iron. I’ve been following Steve for about 18 months. Approximately 2 weeks ago I was watching Moe Norman then when at the range I just weirdly decided to try high hands. I couldn’t believe the difference and consistency 🎉🎉
GREAT tip Steve. Ive been recently experimenting with the same thing after watching Bryson's recent success. It works. Last time out i shot 72 (par) with an 8 hdcp. Keep up the good work highlander!
Steve, that is my swing now. I do have to pivot more like you said and I absolutely have to feel my right lower lats to know I am swinging right. I tend to shot a bit more right now, so I guard against that by taking one more stronger club and giving it a 3/4 or less swing. I love how I can depend on it. - I like how you keep on pushing the envelope. It's all about trying new things but having fun with it. - Keep on, keeping on!
What a coincidence! I just did the same thing with my swing. Only difference is I moved the grip more into the palm on my lead hand like Bryson and Kirk Junge. Skipped the range and took it straight to the course and shot even par on the front 9 for only the 2nd time in my life.
I can’t wait to try this, although I’ll be waiting for a few days as it’s a very cold and wet winter here in Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺 next week is looking better.
Great job with your SPS adjustment. Especially at 2:23 at impact, and to a lessor degree at 6:42 and 8:44 it seems your trailing elbow is extending away a from your body a tad early, especially considering that your camera position is behind the ball and not behind you. At 7:09, 7:40 and 8:10 you have an improved trailing elbow tuck. Otherwise you might want to eliminate your open foot position to help compensate. Great ulnar deviation, better extension on your 1st, 3rd and 4th driver swing was great (2nd one didn't have quite as good on an elbow tuck). BTW, on your PC press the Space Bar to stop playhead near impact, then press the Period key ( . ) to advance 1 frame at a time and the Comma key ( , ) to go back so you can freeze the video at your exact moment of impact. Thanks again Steve, your swing is really looking great!
I tried Eureka, and Single Plane Todd Graves, I have more consistency with the single plane swing. It is so much easier, no looping etc.. Your right arm should form a straight line with the shaft face on view, and your trail hand should have a straight line with the shaft in the down the line view.
Inspired to try this on the range today. First practice session in about 6 months and had some success, especially with Driver. Totally eliminated the damaging toe-strike duck hook. Worth a go on the course this week - feels really comfortable. 'mon the cabbage!
I am old and my swing is short due toback issues. i tried the Bryson swing and found that my aim was better especially with wedges, the strike improved and the ball fliht became quite strong. I try E UREKA as it helps my back. There is definitely some very good mixing both swing thoughts. regards
Saw the first part of this about higher hands at address, went out to practice this and flushed everything. Before I was trapped sometimes massive fat shots, now feel I can rotate shoulders easier and get forward press.
Started using a similar swing about 2 1/2 months ago (difference I face the ball at impact). Most of my strikes were going straight (even the thins and duffs). But for the past 8:55 last 3 weeks I can’t seem to hit my irons. The driver (hit about 85% of fairways), and fairway woods have been unaffected. Any suggestions?
Falls into place for me. I actually have had not good results from the Eureka golf swing in the past. But I have always always watched Steve. Excellent instruction. Of late the one foot one inch drill was killer good. And a few others - so its some creative flow that has entered this phase of the channel. And this Bryson move that makes sense. And its the way Steve presents it. Good golfing everyone.
Aye...as others have said, Moe Norman perfected the single plane swing long before Bryson was even born😂😂😂. We should be celebrating Moe and his awesome track record, numerous club records and several 59's . Legend.
Its Hogan who who perfected long before Moe. And Moe's swing isnt just single plane, the hands are "high" while with Hogan they are same as classic swing. And I dont understand what's so special about single plane, many players today are single plane, Tiger was and still is single plane.
Single axis golf swing. Is it coming back into fashion again? ‘Natural Golf’ was all the rage in the 2000’s. Todd Graves and Jack Kuykendall have been teaching versions of it for 20 years.
Steve, there’s some negative nellies out there. Ignore them. I’ve added the ‘high hands’ to my setup just to try and there is something in it that needs further exploration. Sure it won’t help everyone but for some it’s a game changer. Keep going sir & we appreciate what you’re trying to do.
Hi Steve, nice one. I’m also subscribed to Brysons channel as I’m a similar size at 50 with a handicap around 5. Worked on his style for a couple of months as even after 44 years of playing I’m still learning. Long story short it simply didn’t provide me with the same level of confidence even though the good shots were better and have returned to a similar style to your natural one. Perhaps I didn’t try long enough. 🤔
very nice. I just noticed one thing, at address your right hand is still a bit over your left. drop your right shoulder a bit more and get that right hand a little more under the club. This helped me significantly. I use the Moe Norman style to golf. In this type of swing, the right arm is just along for the ride. try an overlap grip instead of interlocking. Also, your ball is too far back toward the right leg. I would move it up about 1 balls length to the left and compensate with a little more left knee bend (slight lunge) through impact.
I've been doing the single plane swing for a few months. Slightly longer shots with more height and very straight. Start from impact position with hips bumped forward. Try to keep left elbow facing target going back and on the downswing.
The great Moe Norman originated that swing and set-up...right forearm and shaft on same plane line...not sure if Moe used over sized grips as Bryson does...
Hey Steve, Interesting that you said it feels like your using different muscles. Do you think this will be a more back friendly swing? I ask because I have had a lower right back issues for years with conventional setup/swing, switched over to more upright, high hands, locked lead arm with square grip, flat lead hand at the top single plane swing and my back pain improved. I played this method for 2 years, then switched back to my older conventional setup/swing and back pain returned. I think I may need to switch again to single plane. BTW, I also shortened all my clubs this year, so thinking the combination of this and switching back to single plane makes sense to me. So my shaft lengths are as follows, which is different than the one length: - Driver 44” - 4W 43” - 4Hy 40” - 5Hy 39.5” - 5i 37” - 6i 37” - 7i 37” - 8i 36.5” - 9i 36” - PW 35.75” - W 35.5” - GW 35.25” - SW 35.25” - LW 35.25” My distances are very consistent with the above shaft length changes and I feel I can swing with confidence better than I have when the shaft lengths all varied with the conventional lengths.
Other than high hands at address, does this nullify any of your previous instructional videos? Can you comment on ball position using this new address position ?
Why would you change a swing that is so good and works. Eureka works for me. I find that the straight up arms causes tension in the swing if not careful. Stick with what works.. thanks Steve your content is spot on
Coincidentally I have made a similar change in my swing to great results. Also, it’s been noticeable some changes in the swings of Tom Kim and Nicolai Hojgaard to be similar to Bryson’s concept.
Steve…I chip and pitch {up to 70 yards} with my wrists pointed down. {tight stance} My short game is now class. I used to blade or hit heavy. Now when I get a bad shot, it’s because I don’t hold the angle. It’s mad, works 100% of the time. .The only thing I can think, it takes my wrist hinge out of the stroke.
So I was focusing on keeping my arms equal on my torso and had good results but when I switched to my lead bicep more over my pec like you're demonstrating I saw a noticeable difference. Bryson's swing almost looks like a combination of Mo Norman and Ben Hogan combined.
It's early days yet as I only saw the video last night. So far my striking of the ball is inconsistent and generally poor. One thing I have noticed is that in straightening my wrists I alter the lie angle of the club. Won't that have an affect on ball/turf contact?
I couldn't get the single plane until I went to a strong grip (like Kirk Junge). I shoot in the 70's all the time. I also use one length irons (Cobra). Never think about wrist hinge. One benefit is you never need to guess where to put your hands at setup. Same setup with every club definitely eliminates many variables.
Made me check my swing at address..i already do this ...not that extreme but i used to do thenother way for a while and was to inconsistent so went back to my old ways lol
I really think you have a more entertaining way of explaining this, but you are basically just doing what Kirk Junge has been advocating for many years. This totally saved my swing a few years ago. So easy to change to this. But you need to reference Mr Junge on all this stuff.
I could be wrong Steve but in the PGC there’s a poster of you with the opposite to the thumbnail pic 120 / 170 yards? Seems a bit contradictory but I guess it’s a change of swing….. But perhaps that’s the contact as opposed to the address. Ignore me if I’m way off
2:43 "I'm not gonna say I'm gonna change my swing." 🤔 I'm saying you're gonna change your swing! 😃 Once you find out that besides sending the ball super straight, that is easier to draw it, fade it, and to hit it low, medium, high, you'll fall in love with it. Best wishes!
Done very much the same, not extreme high hands, got some one length clubs and my 1st 5 rounds have been effortlessly under my handicap. less wrist hinge far more accurate.
Good stuff. I struggled with one length clubs as the short irons went to high so stalled into the wind🤷♂️ Love the concept though, might get them out and try again!
All clubs have different lie angles and the task is to have contact with the ball in the middle of the face as possible with the face as square to the target as possible. This includes having the sole of the club as square to the surface of the ground that you are hitting the ball from as possible. Golfers are made of all different dimensions. Manufacturers all have different standard lie angles and lengths for their clubs. Therefore one must adjust to their own clubs and dimensions to achieve square impact.
I have tried it with my driver, but not my irons, looks and sounds good! Moe Norman like! Swing path more consistent. I will try it with my irons today. My set up is not like yours but I will try the high hands swing, if it doesn't work I will go back to what I know.
From Stack and tilt to Eureka to a single plane swing (Bryson), or Steve Stricker for that matter, interesting, this approach must require a lot of upper body muscle isn't it?
On your PC press the Space Bar to stop playhead near impact, then press the Period key ( . ) to advance 1 frame at a time and the Comma key ( , ) to go back so you can freeze the video at your exact moment of impact.
I'm not sure if its just the camera angle, but that take away is way inside out. Seems to be more stack n tilt than single plane. No complaints, just an observation.
Hi Steve I don't think classing the angled address position as "wrong Address" is conducive to the masses. I've just come back from the Scottish open at north Berwick and the pro's were angled as this helps keeping hands low on takeaway (Bryson wasn't there😁). Sorry pal just my thoughts but I'm sure this will work for some people..
If you watch Bryson you'll notice his hands actually go up higher and his right elbow gets up to approximately shoulder height and his left shoulder goes down more towards the ball. Also his lie angle is higher than most players. I'm actually going to have my irons lie angle fitted for this type of swing .
Have been playing around with this for the last 3 months and have gained about 20m off the tee. Have gained a hook at time and lost completely a slice. I tried the Moe Norman grip but have struggled with it. It's worth playing around with the grip and width of stance. When working well, you hit a beautiful high long draw.
The reason this works is , your lead arm tries to form a straight line naturally due to centrifugal force with the club shaft , every great ball striker has a pretty straight line from the lead shoulder to clubhead at impact, Bobby jones , hogan , all the top golfers through time, the camera Dtl doesn’t catch this , The camera needs to be from the target to see this
Isn't it the same as lifting the handle when chipping not to duff it, but applied to a regular iron shot?! I felt like your shots were missing to the right, as it happens chipping with this sort of handle upwards...
Good point - when I made the single plane swing adjustment I also had to stand much further from the ball and had to have my irons extended over 1 inch to keep my balance (and not fall forward beyond my toes at impact). That said I haven't adjusted the club lie and I don't see a problem on the divot board when I try swinging to measure it.

Hey Steve,
Interesting that you said it feels like your using different muscles.
So my shaft lengths are as follows, which is different than the one length:
- Driver 44”
- 4W 43”
- 4Hy 40”
- 5Hy 39.5”
- 5i 37”
- 6i 37”
- 7i 37”
- 8i 36.5”
- 9i 36”
- PW 35.75”
- W 35.5”
- GW 35.25”
- SW 35.25”
- LW 35.25”
My distances are very consistent with the above shaft length changes and I feel I can swing with confidence better than I have when the shaft lengths all varied with the conventional lengths.

Now when I get a bad shot, it’s because I don’t hold the angle. It’s mad, works 100% of the time. .The only thing I can think, it takes my wrist hinge out of the stroke.
With your left bicep over your left pec, does that bring your arm across your chest more and move your hands away from target a little bit?
Bingo💥
Made me check my swing at address..i already do this ...not that extreme but i used to do thenother way for a while and was to inconsistent so went back to my old ways lol
I do have my lead arm turned over more(strong grip) which makes my arms more straight than low and relaxed
very nice.
I really think you have a more entertaining way of explaining this, but you are basically just doing what Kirk Junge has been advocating for many years. This totally saved my swing a few years ago. So easy to change to this. But you need to reference Mr Junge on all this stuff.
Cant see where the ball goes but the contact sounds excellent
How much was the grip changed?
Moe ‘Eureka’ Johnston or Steve ‘Eureka’ Norman? 😊
I could be wrong Steve but in the PGC there’s a poster of you with the opposite to the thumbnail pic 120 / 170 yards? Seems a bit contradictory but I guess it’s a change of swing…..
But perhaps that’s the contact as opposed to the address. Ignore me if I’m way off
2:43 "I'm not gonna say I'm gonna change my swing." 🤔
I'm saying you're gonna change your swing! 😃
Once you find out that besides sending the ball super straight, that is easier to draw it, fade it, and to hit it low, medium, high, you'll fall in love with it. Best wishes!
It's the Moe Norman swing, yes?
It would help if you could put your normal swing and this one side by side on screen for an easy comparison.
Done very much the same, not extreme high hands, got some one length clubs and my 1st 5 rounds have been effortlessly under my handicap. less wrist hinge far more accurate.
Good stuff. I struggled with one length clubs as the short irons went to high so stalled into the wind🤷♂️
Love the concept though, might get them out and try again!
You are setting the limits of your arms on a circle. There has to be something there👍
One plane swing. they've been banging on about this Moe style swing for years.
Agreed 👍
I have tried it with my driver, but not my irons, looks and sounds good! Moe Norman like! Swing path more consistent. I will try it with my irons today. My set up is not like yours but I will try the high hands swing, if it doesn't work I will go back to what I know.
High hands, wouldn’t that affect how the lie (toe down) is at impact?
I thought it would but Trackman says no.🤷♂️
From Stack and tilt to Eureka to a single plane swing (Bryson), or Steve Stricker for that matter, interesting, this approach must require a lot of upper body muscle isn't it?
What would be nice is a slow motion video from the front and side with a breakdown.
I adopt the Eureka golf swing 👍www.eurekagolfswing.com
Hi Steve I don't think classing the angled address position as "wrong Address" is conducive to the masses. I've just come back from the Scottish open at north Berwick and the pro's were angled as this helps keeping hands low on takeaway (Bryson wasn't there😁). Sorry pal just my thoughts but I'm sure this will work for some people..
Steve looks more like Stricker. I think you should experiment for 4-6 weeks 👍
If you watch Bryson you'll notice his hands actually go up higher and his right elbow gets up to approximately shoulder height and his left shoulder goes down more towards the ball. Also his lie angle is higher than most players. I'm actually going to have my irons lie angle fitted for this type of swing .
I think you should keep the single plane swing, perfect golf swing.
Are you sure that’s a telegraph pole? Hard to tell from your video but it looks like a power pole with maybe a transformer hanging on it?
More Norman would be proud
Have been playing around with this for the last 3 months and have gained about 20m off the tee. Have gained a hook at time and lost completely a slice. I tried the Moe Norman grip but have struggled with it. It's worth playing around with the grip and width of stance. When working well, you hit a beautiful high long draw.
Moe Norman promoted this as well
Norman had more of a Nicklaus finish I think.
The reason this works is , your lead arm tries to form a straight line naturally due to centrifugal force with the club shaft , every great ball striker has a pretty straight line from the lead shoulder to clubhead at impact, Bobby jones , hogan , all the top golfers
through time, the camera Dtl doesn’t catch this ,
The camera needs to be from the target to see this
Isn't it the same as lifting the handle when chipping not to duff it, but applied to a regular iron shot?! I felt like your shots were missing to the right, as it happens chipping with this sort of handle upwards...
Hands high at address sets your wrist at the top in the same position every time.
Moe norman has been doing that for a long time
If the lie on your clubs are fitted to your usual swing, wouldn't the toe be too low for a Bryson-type swing?
Yes it would be but on trackman all seems fine? I’m still working on this
Good point - when I made the single plane swing adjustment I also had to stand much further from the ball and had to have my irons extended over 1 inch to keep my balance (and not fall forward beyond my toes at impact). That said I haven't adjusted the club lie and I don't see a problem on the divot board when I try swinging to measure it.
Funny thing is --we only have your word those shots are good! I could not see the flight, direction or landing of the ball!
@@edwardw8019 well…..don’t try it🤷♂️
@@stevejohnstongolf I won't!
