Hey there foodie! For this recipe I am applying my knowledge of bread making and pastry making to these dumplings to make them super tasty!
Today you'll learn how to make this traditional Jamaican breakfast side dish perfectly fluffy and soft on the inside but flaky and cripsy on the outside. Some of these steps differ from the ones our parents and grandparents might've taken while making this simple dish.
I feel like every time I make Fried dumplings the measurements might be a bit different but there are certain things that never change. So, I'll be giving you guys those tips. Sometimes in the past I'd add a pinch of Baking soda but it's really not necessary. I've recorded this recipe to provide one for you guys to have in your collection of Jamaican recipes to go back to every time.
    .......................
RECIPE YIELD: This recipe gives you 12 - 14 MEDIUM-LARGE dumplings.
FOR SMALLER YIELD: I use about 1 1/4 tsp baking powder TO 1 cup flour.
For the other ingredients I just add a bit less
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    INGREDIENTS:
    Vegetable/canola oil for deepfrying
    3 cups allpurpose flour*
    1 1/4 tablespoon baking powder
    1 1/2 teaspoon salt
    2 tbsps white sugar (OPTIONAL)
2 1/2 tbsp unsalted cold butter**
    3/4 - 1 cup cold water
*cake flour may be used to achieve lightness but allpurpose works just as well.
**much better in order to control saltiness of the dough
Temperature used is around 275F and then you may increase to no more than 350F.
    .......................
SERVING: Best served hot and freshly made. Traditionally served with Jamaican breakfast entrees like Ackee and saltfish, Mackerel Run Down, Cook up Saltfish, Canned Corned Beef, Stew Chicken Livers, Callaloo and Saltfish etc

it’s 5 am in the morning but i just remembered how much this video helped me. Before this video i had no idea how to make fried dumplings. i felt almost ashamed i couldnt. i would depend on my mother wenever she could to make them for me and im 23 lol. or i would go to a restaurant that has bomb dumplings but they’re kinda far and i haven’t been leaving my home much these days. Anyways followed this step by step but left the dough over night. I am in love. My family loves my dumplings. lol they can’t believe I made them. wish we could post pictures in comments. Very good demonstration and I love that u explained the process. I'm one of those persons who need to understand "why".
I hate shifting the flour but after ur explanation, I will try harder to incorporate this step 😩

I was really struggling to make fry dumplings for a good while now and I've asked alot of people for tips and I watched a lot of videos on utube and nothing helped until I came across your video, thanks alot didn't realize the secret that I was missing was cold water and the way I knead the flour. I didn't use sugar tho and my fry dumpling came out perfect :) I just subscribed. Keep posting videos. Big up u self!

your a really good teacher and your recipes are so simple and easy to follow! I find that I don't really like traditional fried dumplings with butter and sugar , I prefer that in festivals (I always mess up the ratio of flour to baking powder so thanks for the measurements)

Thank you Tina😁 Yeah I understand luv. The butter and sugar are definitely not traditional additions, I just like the taste and effect on texture. Have a great weekend!

I agree on the sugar and butter and also you are indeed an excellent teacher. This type of dumplin is not my favorite but it definitely can eat. If I get breakfast from a restaurant, I find this is the method used. They taste good but I love the old time traditional way. I think my preference is because I grew up eating and making it the traditional way.

It's basically identical, except that you add fine cornmeal, and use warm or cold coconut milk, then shape them cylindrically.

let me tell you, you are a life saver I love fry dumplin and I could not make it until I watch your video and I'm telling I fried it yesterday and it was the bomb, it was so fluffy inside and tell you eat again I left some for overnight and when I warm it up in the morning it was still soft and nice. thank you so much

I'm so happy you liked it Karol! Did you warm it up in the microwave? The BEST way to reheat the next day is to wrap them loosely with foil and put them in the oven at about 300F. They are soooo good😃 Thanks for the feedback! Have a wonderful weekend
