It happened to me. There are two kinds of school exams in my country. One takes place directly at school, the other at an independent testing center. I knew that I was significantly better than everyone else. I often won various competitions and even wrote my own research paper when I was only 16, for which I won a prestigious prize. But I had one classmate whose parents bribed the school so that her school exam results were much better than others. She even got a gold medal. She was very narcissistic, with an incredibly inflated ego, and was constantly trying to humiliate me. But in the end, my scores at the independent testing center were an order of magnitude better than hers, she wasn't even in second or third place behind me. So I wasn't upset about that. Even now (10 years later) it's funny to remember this situation.

I am with Naad on this one. Whilst his master did explain to him what was wrong she responded to his outburst by goading him... then letting him kill her to cement his dark side turn. Are a Jedi always this moronic? She did a better job of turning a Jedi than Sidious.
What the master did was mostly right. It was a test and one that naad failed. He lacked humility and had issues with anger especially when it comes to disrespect. If someone like this was allowed to become a jedi he would misuse their teachings, something naad eventually did. The only thing she got wrong was that she needed to kill naad, not let him kill her.

Yeah because it's not a fair test. He wasn't a Jedi master, he was a student. A YOUNG student. And she literally expected him to have the wisdom of a Master, and then when he failed the test she penalized him absolutely as much as she possibly could. It's for sure not a fair test, and goes straight to one of the big points of the prequel trilogy: the Jedis dogma and arrogance that they are right causes them to fuck it. Did anyone else feel like the Jedi handled Nadd wrongly here? I always did feel that way when reading his story in the past, the lesson that they wanted to impart was a good one, but I feel like this is where the Jedi go wrong in their teachings, younger people are more rash and impulsive by nature, and all of that complicated monk psychobabble just pushes them further away. They could have just told him straight up, your ego is getting in your way, you need to rededicate yourself to the core teachings until you understand why we did not choose you, it is because pride will get you in trouble down the road, it will lure you to the dark side in moments of arrogance. Sure the same result may have happened either way, but I feel like at least then it would be entirely on Nadd being a selfish arrogant dick instead of feeling looked down upon and passed over in spite of his talent.
I don't think it's recklessness or even lust for power. Teenagers also need guidance and support when you take in children you need to provide emotional support and care to them. What they basically did was crush his perception without explanation and when he came to them for guidance or even comfort they rejected him. I really can't blame him for feeling hurt and betrayed by the jedi. I don't think they even had to say anything about the lesson itself. I think just comforting him and showing that they still cared and wanted to teach him would have been enough. If that master just gave him a hug and said "You will understand soon" or maybe even "You have to find out before we will grand it to you" I don't think he would have fallen. It wouldn't have provided any answers but it would show him that the jedi still cared and that it was something that he could work on. His fall to the dark side was more due to him feeling abandoned and betrayed by the jedi and, if you destroy a child's perception of themselves without providing context or support I don't think any child would react to that well. To me it feels more like the jedi wanted to teach someone a lesson but they forgot that they were dealing with a child. The only other reaction I can imagine is that they will feel very hurt and spend a lot of time crying. They would also become quite fanatical and/or suspicious as they will view their place in the jedi order as very fragile and that their fellow jedi can not be trusted. I know jedi training is tough but I do think the order should provide a sense of security and guidance. They won't just hand things to you but if you really need them they'll be there for you.

Humility cannot be taught. If it is, it isn’t true humility, only subservience and compliance with the expectations of the teacher. Humility can only be learned by each person coming to a deep understanding of himself / herself, and developing compassion and respect for all others. Freedon Nadd utterly failed to achieve this.
Exar Kun was an inevitability. By the time he meet Nadd, Kun was a dark sider. Even then there's an innumerable amount of Dark Jedi who eventually became Sith Lords after the first great schism.
Refusing to give rewards to those who don't deserve them because of their own character faults isn't a mistake. Like Lucifer he was too proud of himself to acknowledge that he might have a flaw. He was too sure of his own perfection to even be willing to look at himself and recognize why the council denied him what he wanted. The only mistake the Jedi Council made was in hoping he'd develop the humility to recognize it on his own. That if they gave him the time he'd redeem himself.

I always found it odd that the King Adas Holocron which was created around 27,000bby was able to tell Nadd Naga Sadows resting place even though Sadow went into exile around 5000bby.
Most likely Adas saw it through The Force long before it happened. There were Force Users who could see the future but often their visions were hard to understand. It's not that. This is more them forgetting that jedi students are still children. You can't just leave a child hanging like that. You need to show them some kind of support or else they'll feel abandoned and betrayed. It doesn't even need to be useful guidance, just emotional support to show that this is something he can overcome.

For all he knew they were going to chuck him out or make him a lowly servant. Skipping him without a word and refusing to speak to him surely means they have no confidence in him. He was suddenly abandoned by those who he thought loved him and seemingly rejected. As well as everything he believed about his position being pulled out from under him without any explanation. If the jedi wanted him to prove himself to them they would have said so. Not just leave him hanging.

So filling his head with feelings of abandonment and betrayal without any context or guidance is a really bad idea. If they had told him it was something he did wrong he would have some context, he would know that they want him to do something. However they didn't say something like that. I have to say "the story of" is my favorite of your series, it is packed with information and always interesting. I don't really find the vs series as compeling (spelling) since it don't have as much history as the story of. this is kind of a short (but still long) lore of some of the characters in the Star Wars universe. I would love to something like this of bigger/more famous characters such as Darth Plaguies (even tho i´ve read the novel). Other characters in such as Mace Windu, Plo kun and Darth Maul would also be something i personaly would love. so yeah, great video as always ofc
You tell a fine story, Evan, and I really enjoy them. The odd thing is that while Nadd's tale is a fascinating one, it's also a story of epic fails. Nadd managed to leave a fearsome legacy through others, but in life he couldn't even keep one planet under control. Fail. Also, why do so few Sith Lords keep their apprentices on a leash i.e., Kun? Is it megalomania or do they just enjoy the thrill of wondering if their apprentice will kill them today? The other thing that struck me was about the Jedi, specifically Master Matta. One of the problems with trying to write a wise character is they can't be wiser than you can pull off, otherwise they just look like fools. A five minute glance through our own world's spiritual wisdom would have shown her that pride is one problem that cannot be seen from within, because it blinds you by its very nature, beam in your own eye, and all that. The Jedi have always drawn inspiration from the samurai, of course, particularly in their fetishization of death. Matta takes that to another level entirely. In the finest tradition of the Jedi, she concludes "hmmm, I could easily solve this dilemma with a quick therapy session, but I think I'll let him kill me instead, derp."
Freedon, some things cannot be taught. Some things you have to find out for yourself. If we showed them to you, pointed and said, "Look, here it is," you wouldn't understand them. A Jedi must look inside himself, listen to his heart and spirit. If you don't... well, let's just say you'll never become a true Jedi JEDI MASTER MATTA TREMAINE

As for what I would like to see in the future, here's some ideas Darth Sidious vs Darth Krayt Shaak Ti vs Luminara Unduli Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Nihilus Darth Vader vs Darth Malgus And as for story wise, I'd like to see the story of: Obi-Wan Kenobi, Kyle Katarn, Darth Sidious, Yoda, or even Luke Skywalker. Jedi understand people and how problematic emotional attachment can be, and they are unraveling those attachments so that Jedi can see and do what is needed. People tend to forget, Jedi want detachment from emotion. They want someone aloof and objective, not someone easily misdirected by emotion.

Humility cannot be taught. If it is, it isn’t true humility, only subservience and compliance with the expectations of the teacher.
Humility can only be learned by each person coming to a deep understanding of himself / herself, and developing compassion and respect for all others.
Freedon Nadd utterly failed to achieve this.

IF ONLY Nadd hadn't fallen he would have been one of the most legendary jedi in history and so much war would've been negated.
You can say that for a lot of the legendary Sith Lords. Ulic-Qel Droma, Anakin, Dooku, Jacen Solo. I mean the list goes on and on.

Exar Kun was an inevitability. By the time he meet Nadd, Kun was a dark sider. Even then there's an innumerable amount of Dark Jedi who eventually became Sith Lords after the first great schism.
Seems to be a running theme in Star Wars lore huh? :)

Refusing to give rewards to those who don't deserve them because of their own character faults isn't a mistake. Like Lucifer he was too proud of himself to acknowledge that he might have a flaw. He was too sure of his own perfection to even be willing to look at himself and recognize why the council denied him what he wanted. The only mistake the Jedi Council made was in hoping he'd develop the humility to recognize it on his own. That if they gave him the time he'd redeem himself.

"He'll figure it out" is fine if you're talking about a wayward master, but to expect that kind of awareness from an apprentice still in training is stupid. He's your student, so teach him.

I always found it odd that the King Adas Holocron which was created around 27,000bby was able to tell Nadd Naga Sadows resting place even though Sadow went into exile around 5000bby.
Probably learned it from someone at the time who knew of Sadow's escape. Or maybe Sadow himself.

Most likely Adas saw it through The Force long before it happened. There were Force Users who could see the future but often their visions were hard to understand. The jedi failed a lot of people. Its sad how they refuse to understand the ties that bind.
It's not that. This is more them forgetting that jedi students are still children. You can't just leave a child hanging like that. You need to show them some kind of support or else they'll feel abandoned and betrayed. It doesn't even need to be useful guidance, just emotional support to show that this is something he can overcome.

Also being patient is not so easy with no information. For all he knew they were going to chuck him out or make him a lowly servant. Skipping him without a word and refusing to speak to him surely means they have no confidence in him.
He was suddenly abandoned by those who he thought loved him and seemingly rejected. As well as everything he believed about his position being pulled out from under him without any explanation. If the jedi wanted him to prove himself to them they would have said so. Not just leave him hanging.

So suddenly pulling the rug from under them and not proving any support whatsoever is a really cruel thing to do. I can't blame him for feeling confused and abandoned.
Also your logic doesn't quite make sense. He reacts based on his emotions and he can't control those yet. So filling his head with feelings of abandonment and betrayal without any context or guidance is a really bad idea. If they had told him it was something he did wrong he would have some context, he would know that they want him to do something.
However they didn't say something like that. For all he knew they just hated him and decided to chuck him out.
@@MrMarinus18 I get that he's emotional and has every right to be, but again, he's still responsible for his rash and unjust actions because of emotions. That's why jedi do what they did to test how he would react. He even knew he failed but he blamed the jedi, not himself.

I have to say "the story of" is my favorite of your series, it is packed with information and always interesting. I don't really find the vs series as compeling (spelling) since it don't have as much history as the story of. this is kind of a short (but still long) lore of some of the characters in the Star Wars universe. I would love to something like this of bigger/more famous characters such as Darth Plaguies (even tho i´ve read the novel). Other characters in such as Mace Windu, Plo kun and Darth Maul would also be something i personaly would love. so yeah, great video as always ofc
You tell a fine story, Evan, and I really enjoy them. The odd thing is that while Nadd's tale is a fascinating one, it's also a story of epic fails. Nadd managed to leave a fearsome legacy through others, but in life he couldn't even keep one planet under control. Fail. Also, why do so few Sith Lords keep their apprentices on a leash i.e., Kun? Is it megalomania or do they just enjoy the thrill of wondering if their apprentice will kill them today?
The other thing that struck me was about the Jedi, specifically Master Matta. One of the problems with trying to write a wise character is they can't be wiser than you can pull off, otherwise they just look like fools. A five minute glance through our own world's spiritual wisdom would have shown her that pride is one problem that cannot be seen from within, because it blinds you by its very nature, beam in your own eye, and all that. The Jedi have always drawn inspiration from the samurai, of course, particularly in their fetishization of death. Matta takes that to another level entirely. In the finest tradition of the Jedi, she concludes "hmmm, I could easily solve this dilemma with a quick therapy session, but I think I'll let him kill me instead, derp."

Freedon Nadd was someone I only saw in Sith pictures but never knew how deep and how far his influence went and what his story was. Humility is indeed something very strong. Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Nihilus
Darth Vader vs Darth Malgus
And as for story wise, I'd like to see the story of: Obi-Wan Kenobi, Kyle Katarn, Darth Sidious, Yoda, or even Luke Skywalker. Hope it'll happen and as always may the force be with you

While yes, he had a right to be upset, he could have taken a route that was more humble than, say, attempting to murder a Jedi? I mean even when my instructor at a college course gave me three zeroes for missing a single day of class (for my own grandmother's funeral mind you) I didn't try to murder the lady....
She challenged him, could have blocked or evaded but instead accepted her death

You should consider doing ASMR book readings! Not many people do that and as it stands you would be second to none at the actual reading of the material. Not sure if you'd enjoy doing quiet reading but I assure you there's a whole community with untapped potential just waiting for this. Couple that with some really neat series choices like this and it'll be a snoozefest! In a good way.

Jedi understand people and how problematic emotional attachment can be, and they are unraveling those attachments so that Jedi can see and do what is needed. People tend to forget, Jedi want detachment from emotion. They want someone aloof and objective, not someone easily misdirected by emotion.
