  • A playthrough of Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom, as included in the 1995 Super NES Tecmo game compilation Ninja Gaiden Trilogy.
This entry on the Super NES compilation is the only one that really offers any differences beyond the presentation, and I'm sure for many, that's a very good thing. The game is much easier on the SNES - Ryu doesn't take as much damage per hit and continues are no longer limited. The unfortunate trade-off here, like it is in all three games, is the presentation. The voice samples are MUCH cleaner in this one (the yells and grunts are pretty crystal clear), but the tinny guitars don't really do the music any favors. And why did they wipe out that awesome orchestra hit sample in some of the songs?
The graphics have the same nominal color increase as the other two games, but for whatever reason, they actually axed some of the parallax scrolling that was used in the NES version! I don't know if they just couldn't figure out how to manipulate the SNES to do the same effect, or if it would have slowed the game down, or what - it's not a huge loss, but if you're really familiar with the NES version, you'll probably notice it.
They didn't bother to include a fix for the timer issue in Act VII either, so good luck getting to the end boss without being killed because of the timer. I don't think it's possible to finish the game in a single life because of this - it's the same in the NES version.
