Vantage Point Wild Camp ~ Diana Xmid1p Solid

  • Camping high above the trees of a disused quarry in The Peak District, made me think of a bygone era and how nature always find a way long after humans leave it alone. The scars left in the gritstone edges are softened by trees for acres and acres providing home for wildlife galore, like a U.K. jungle. This camp was in a place that I’ve wanted to stay the night for a long while. It was quite the opposite of what I had expected, a calm night with no rain as was forecast. Simple wild camping with simple comforts.
    Thanks for watching
    Best wishes
    Sarah

    Hey everyone 🤩 well it turns out I’ve got quite the routine going with this now and I’m really enjoying the process. I will enjoy replying to your comments when I can today. Because my time is precious between working full time and other life responsibilities I like to make a video the same day of the camp and publish it when it’s done and I’m happy with it. For me, the camp isn’t over until this moment and it’s probably my way of making it last longer! Then I usually watch it back a few times 😅 ya probs think I’m weird. That’s cos I am!
    I’ve been planning life events and penciling in my upcoming camps, I don’t plan the location often until the day before as weather dictates that, but also my emotions, energy levels and how much time I have before and after the actual camp. Part of the excitement is not knowing, but I certainly have a fair few spots to choose from out here in the Peak District… until next camp, catch ya later ⛺️✨

      Mr Durston himself talked to me about how many typical views a TH-cam video would need for any sales to come out of it …maybe the quote was 10000 views = 2 tents sold, can’t remember now. It was interesting info. I reckon I could sell him more just by telling him everyone how much I love it and that it’s ok to name tents 😂 DO IT, DOUBLE DARE 💰

    This camp seems to have a nice floatiness about it.Maybe because you were pitched on a level with the treetops.You do know how to pick your spots Sarah (don't pick 'em,they'll never get better ) Blowing out the flame was comedy gold.
    When you got up on the dancing rock and the classical music wafted in I thought,Hello! we're in for a spot of ballet,here.She's going to be up on't t'toes . . .But no! I was sorely disappointed and had to console myself with a foot-long baguette; some pickled eel's feet and a bag of sherbert lemons.

      @SoloSarahBX  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes!!! You just triggered a memory. I knew this but had forgotten. Nice camp Sarah, beautiful location tempted but beware Padley Gorge with it's inviting lush lawn like grass areas has signs up (when approached from the train station routes) that say NO camping presumably erected by the Longshaw Estate. I predict if you make it too popular to wild campers there's going to be a crack down by the Longshaw Estate, which as you say in your video has it's visitor centre cafe not too far away.

    • @SoloSarahBX
      @SoloSarahBX  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Phil 👋🏻 I know the area very well, yes I took a chance on that camp. It’s fab but a site I don’t use very often due to its proximity to the estate and surprise view. The gorge is so inviting there are signs up everywhere, hopefully this puts fly campers off camping but for us wild campers we know the right places to go and how to do it as not to attract attention. Obviously I chose to make a video about my experience, as with all places I camp it’s probably prohibited but I do it anyway, carefully and respectfully ☺️ATB, Sarah

      It is a fab site Sarah and as you say we wild campers know the leave no trace principles. But the closer one camps to 'civilisation' the more likely to upset someone.
      Nice darker colour for the Durston tent by the way. Keep on doing your thing. It's important that all genders feel they have a right and confidence to be out there on the own. You are a terrific ambassador for that :)

    What a cracking place to pitch up.
    Agreed about the tick situation. I'm off to the Dr's in an hour to get assessed for Lyme disease. Not been well for a couple of days having brought 3 of the little buggers back off Frogatt Edge with me last weekend. Not impressed at all as I was covered up most of the time. Got them off without too much fuss, and no sign of bullseye rash around the bites yet, but feel like the day after I've just had my annual flu jab. Not even had chance to edit the video yet. I hope it (treatment) doesn't prevent me from drinking, as we are away next week - and you know I like a tipple just as much as the old man of wild camping (Sorry Pat).
    Enough of me... You want to see it down in the quarry. I walked through there over the new year with some TA lads. Perfect place for camping either in a hammock between the trees or a tent as it's nice and flat. Sadly there's lots of fire scarring where folks have had disposable BBQs and open fires and it gets very busy at weekends and bank holidays. ATB Sarah - till the next one..

    • @SoloSarahBX
      @SoloSarahBX  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh no Andy! I can’t believe I came away unscathed as Id camped there the week before you did. I wear leggings and a long sleeved top when I’m camping and the weather wasn’t quite as warm when I went, there may have been population explosion? Hope you feel better soon and haven’t succumbed to the dreaded Lymes disease. Be sure to update on the results Andy. ATB, Sarah

I’ve tracked Totley Tunnel from home near Totley on the golf course and often have a little wonder over to the vent that stands proud on the moor just down from flask edge trig. I have thought about a camp on that but was concerned regarding any pollution coming up the vents from the trains 🚂 I love disappearing into darkness at Totley and popping back out at the other end…on the train might I add lol 😂 it’s a good long stretch that! Ey up Sarah
    Padley moor is a part of the Peak District I've never camped, I've gone past it hundreds of times and never even give it a thought, now you've given me a glimpse of what lies beyond what can be seen from the road I'm going to make a point of camping somewhere up there one night but I'll be waiting until bank holidays and school holidays are out the way (I'm not a people person), nice quite solitude is my thing, I don't know why you don't like the glasses, they look ok, you got that sexy librarian vibe going on 😍😂, seriously though if you need em then you need em, I don't like walking poles but I use them because I've got nackered knees and need to use them, we all get older (and all that jazz) so putting up with a few inconveniences early on in life can only prolong your enjoyment in later life, your only a spring chicken yet so you have a lot more time in front of you than a lot of us older buggers, it's maintenance that keeps everything in good condition and working longer whether it's the person or their equipment and glasses are part of that maintenance, anyway it's nice to see Diana out again, I've got a feeling we'll be seeing a lot more of her this year, keep yourself safe and all the best lass, Micky B

      Ahhh that’s awesome 🤩 yes it’s my main route from home in Sheffield to the Peak District and was often my commute to University in Huddersfield as I enjoyed taking the scenery in, even when the thick fog rolled in and I drove so slow up there (with the radio turned off to see better 😂) I always roam the area and have done so all my (short) life. I am active in my role at work and want to prolong my life to enjoy what is important. The glasses help me see long distances (you see) so I don’t wear them often, but when I am surveying my kingdom or looking for deer and birds they are very needed! I hope you enjoy stopping your car for a look about and a wonder on the rocks. Well up to Mother cap rock and you’ll see my camp site and the quarry to the right. Beautiful 🤩 see you on the next one 🌳⛺️ATB, Sarah

We wish your son (I think you said your daughter is younger) well with his exams and for whatever he's deciding to do next, what an exciting time with their whole lives ahead of them 😊. Our daughter will be in year 9 when they return in September so not too far behind you. When I was at high school I wanted to be a nurse, but knew I wanted a family and living at least an hour from any hospital (we live proper out in the sticks) and not wanting to do shift work I decided against it. It's lovely to hear your story and how you've managed to make it work 😊. I decided to instead become a beauty therapist and worked in salons and then a spa (with shift hours, only until 9pm though) and just before having my children and until I had my second child run my own mobile business. Haven't done it since and won't now as I help my husband with his plumbing and heating business. Will be heading out this weekend to do some wild cooking, once we have cut some of the 6ft plus hedge that runs all the way around our house 😅 we have decided to just do the front of the house and leave the back for another time. Take care and we look forward to your next adventure ✨️ Sadie x 😊

As an ex soldier you might be interested to know the US military impregnate the clothing of their personnel with permethrin to combat biting insects, which hitherto cost them more in casualties in the field than enemy contact. 👍🏻🖐🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿😊

    Hiya, nice tent, how would you compare it to the helm 1. Besides weight 🙂

    • @SoloSarahBX
      @SoloSarahBX  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey 👋🏻 I’d like to do a comparison video tbh as a few folk have asked. The tents feel very different in their design especially as the Xmid uses trekking poles. The tent is much lighter as the fabric is thinner and therefore more packable. The xmid is extremely strong and the features on it seem
      More dainty and more refined than the Helm. What I like more about the xmid is the large door opening (I can sit in the doorway without my head touching the roof ) and the different ways the door can be rolled or pegged out to make an awning. The Helm isn’t as versatile. The helm doesn’t have two doors which really gives it a completely different feel. The Helms vestibule at the rear is very useful but only has the ones use of storage, pretty much like the Hilleberg Soulo I have. For me, the xmid replaces my Helm as this is definitely more suited to my needs taking everything into account. It’s also not that much more pricey but the import costs put people off I guess. Hope that’s useful info? ATB, Sarah

I accidentally baught a 33ltr osprey ( not too bad as I wanted a 40ltr ) but that's what iam going to fit my gear into , this summer.. it's got some outside pockets and pouches, so iam hoping it will not be too bad.. Why do not you use your Hilleberg tent? Is too hot in it or heavy to carry? I am considering to buy one. That is why I am interested to know.

    • @SoloSarahBX
      @SoloSarahBX  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi 👋🏻 cut down on weight is the main reason because I do love the Soulo. I have climbed Kinder Scout with full winter bag and the Soulo and managed but without any ultralight kit in testing conditions with not quite tip top fitness it’s hard work. Weighed in at 14.5kg with water. My wishes are to hike more freely without being weighted down with my stuff in warmer conditions this spring and summer, I use walking poles anyway especially on longer hikes so having a shelter that weighs 795g compared to 2.5ish kg helps. The Soulo is not as well ventilated as my Xmid and doesn’t have two doors. The fly also goes down to the ground which is excellent in winter and rain but not so comfy
      In summer. As the Xmid is also a fraction of the cost of the Soulo I wanted to give it a go and now that I have it I’ll try it in more testing congratulations. I’ve also been reminded by another subscriber that I will prolong the life of my Hillbrerg by not using it all year round in the sun. On the contrary, I also feel that the Soulo can be pitched anywhere and it has a smaller foodprint that the Xmid so good to hunker down where ever you are even in a bad storm. For many different reasons, she’s still my favourite tent is Hillary 😊

    • @SoloSarahBX
      @SoloSarahBX  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey 👋🏻 the summer ring can be bought separately from the speedster drive website with the 30 or 50 ml spirit burner (I think) but checked back in a while. Simple piece of aluminium similar to the kind of metal you get in a tea light candle. It’s reduces the size of the flame therefore reduces the heat provided by the burner (sorry if you already know that bit lol 😂)

      Ahhh cool! Yes I used to have gas but wanted to lighten my pack so one of the first things I swapped out was the cooking system. Here’s a link for the set k use. The burners can be bought separately along with different sized windshield and pot stands for what ever you decide to cook, just heating water or cooking a meal. The spirit ring made. Big difference and reduced the heat to a more gentle flame to
      Warm
      My food through on this camp. I use bioethanol from Amazon and buy it in bulk.
