2007 Honda Accord, 3.0L V6 Special Edition owner here. We attempted and completed this yesterday and it took us 13 hours with two persons (myself and a helper). We started at 7am and finished at 8pm, this is from the time we took off the wheels to actually test driving it at the end. I'd say it would have taken us a shorter amount of time (9 or 10 hours) if not for some stubborn nuts and bolts and us not putting parts back in the same steps as they were taken off, other than that following this videos steps for my V6 type of engine is spot on and I would highly recommend it to make sure the rack comes out easiest. Here are some tips to help out to make sure yall don't waste time like we did. Tools: 10mm, 12mm, 13mm, 14mm, 15mm, 16mm, 17mm sockets and wrenches. A couple of long and short extensions. A couple of swivel adapters to fit the drive you'll be using and an impact of course. A cheater/breaker bar would help and I wouldn't do this alone unless you want to take more time to perform this repair. PROBLEM #1: I would highly recommend writing down every step you took removing nuts, bolts and parts that way everything goes back easy, it was a pain for us trying to put in the heat shield (it is not in the same configuration and my V6 as it is in this video). There are many steps involved and you might forget what's next. The only reverse step I would divert from would be putting in the rack bolts when you slide in the new one. Just like in this video it is easier just to hand thread them while the sub frame is lowered that way you don't have to do it from the top (you'll still have to impact them from the top). PROBLEM #2: We had a hard time removing the lines from the old rack, they were tight as hell, my helper was pushing up from the bottom with a short pipe while I was pulling on the wrench. A few times he had to hammer the pipe while I was pulling on the wrench. They came off eventually. PROBLEM #3: The steering wheel spline removal underneath the steering column for us was very hard. The sucker would not come off easily like in this video, it eventually came off with much convincing. PROBLEM #4: In this video he says to remove the four 14mm bolt at the base of the motor mount, it's not necessary (I'm guessing this was a mistake on Ol' GasDiesel Garage's part but it's understandable, there are alot of steps) fortunately we didn't remove those bolts for our rack swap but make sure you line up the motor mount back in its spot when going in reverse, putting in the motor mount horizontal bolt was fairly easy. We had to slightly raise it from the transmission using the jack to line up the bolt with its hole but it was no big deal, very easy. Of all these problems we had the worst one was #1, please write down your steps and go back in the same order or waste time! The rest was just stubborn nuts and bolts that were hard as hell to take off but it's nothing that some muscle couldn't handle. We followed this video for my V6 and it came out pretty good, hope this helps.
Thank you for this wonderful info!!! I also am a 07 accord v6 owner and I need to replace my rack and pinion! Will definitely be following your advice!
I have the same car with V6 but mine has the electric power steering n it stops working cause rain fell I drove in water nw it hard to turn I disconnect the power from the power steering computer module n connect to 12 car battery it turned a a little bit but not all the way
My neighbor is retired mechanic. He said when he worked at chrysler he was doing these in like 30-45 min. When telling me this, he was a cpl beers in tho soooo.. 🤷🏻♂️ 😂 i like taking my time. Enjoying the experience. I'm older now. I call it foreplay. 🤣🤣🤣
Yup, I got hung up on breaking the 19mm ps fluid input line. Had to get bodybuilder neighbor (and he injured his wrist) and mine was every night for a week!
Watched 5 or 6 others before finding this. Your camera head and heels above the rest. Don’t know how you got all the angles you did but this has been extremely helpful.
2 to 3 hours? More like two to three days for me. My back hurts just watching this vid man. I know I can do it. My back is just saying what are you saving all your money for bud? Your back surgery? LOL. Great work.
OH MY LORD I am so relieved. I'm building confidence in doing this job as I just replaced my head gasket a couple of weeks ago. But when I replaced my rear motor mount I stripped and forced one of the holding bolts in. Now I'm glad to see the while thing comes out as one, I'll probably get the chance to fix that thread hole too
ANYONE WITH A V6, i was able to get it done with quite a few less steps but couldn't find any write ups online. I removed tie rods, unbolt engine mount and get out of the way (i zip tied mine to the side), unbolt high and low pressure lines, disconnect mount on passanger side, unbolt rack from subframe, unbolt the steering wheel, support engine, unbolt the 6 main bolts on the subframe, just loosen them a bit at a time, then lower the engine carefully til you have enough room. You'll also have to unbolt the 2 10mm bolts on the drivers side in the engine bay that hold all the brake lines to allow them to move. Youll need to angle the steering shaft towards the front of the car, maneuvering it out and vice versa when you put then new one in. Person I'm doing it for was quoted $3500 and I can see why. Swivel socket and many extensions were a must.
I didn't even have to remove the mount on the drivers side. Granted, going the extra steps might make it much less of a hassle to get out. But with two people it was not bad. Hope it helps someone, as this was a total PITA with no real write ups for the v6.
What was the problem with yours? like how’d u diagnose it because mine is leaking bad but at the bottom so it’s leading me to conclude that it might be the rack and pinion.
One of these days you should let me FaceTime you tho so you can see what I’m talking about, because I don’t know much about cars and if we have the same issue then I guess I’ll need a new rack and pinion
Mine was leaking onto the subframe under the rack from the metal part of the return hose. My rack was bad because it was run like that for too long, you can tell cause steering feels like shit and is crunchy and has very poor input. You can change the line without removing the rack but you will likely have to remove the rear motor mount. It's not an easy job really, but if you have extensions and tools just changing the line shouldn't be bad
@@karosirrup1014 if the rack was leaking it would be leaking from the tie rod boots, I'm guessing it's the same line that was leaking on the one I worked on though. There's a good chance your rack is OK
Bro, I damn nearly chose to sell my car than let a shop charge me an arm and leg for this repair… Gonna replace it myself like I do most my car parts, thanks a ton. New subscriber gained!

Hey sir I have a question. I replaced my rack and pinion same axle you put in the description from Detroit axle. I flushed the system and put new fluid and my car makes noise from the pump excessively and mildly from the rack and pinion when I steer. I doubt the rack I got was sent bad. I’m thinking my pump went out. Any suggestions thankyou. Oh and no leaks anywhere. Tia
Omg- it’s pretty easy when you have the battery tools, I did, It took me like an hour to get it out, I didn’t see the part where you put something between the hanger and the body, I did put a 2x4 between and made it more open, I put the 4 inch side of the wood, But when I had the new one in, I damn it strip the entry of main hydra line, so I had to take that out again, 2nd time was faster, like 5 min, I took the main hydraulic line off the pump and tried to threading in without messing up more, I finally got it to go in straight, I left that hose on and made that fit through that hole where the RnP goes through, I didn’t want to take it off and struggle threading it when the RnP is in! Got it, done, yep like 5hrs

Please explain where to support the engine with that wood and at what point you remove it. I noticed it not in use halfway through the video when lower the subframe.
Well you don’t have to take the whole subframe out so support the subframe in the middle rear under the steering rack…because remember your only loosin the two rear subframe bolts to get enough space to remove the rack n pinion.

Great video! Helping my sons friend replace this Saturday. I ordered the same one you mentioned. You didn’t go over the grease fittings that you have to install on the outer tie rods. Do you just install those and pump them full with grease?
My problem now is the clock spring broke months ago and had been driving it the whole time now my steering wheel is to the point I don't know what to do! How do I get it to where it's supposed to be so I don't break another clock spring? I'm tired of dumping money into this damn car but it's all I have
Great video I follow your instructions exactly, but I just did a mistake…I pull the rack n pinion little too much so my lower pressure power steering line started leaking after I finished the work on my 07 accord😩😭. So I had to use your video n back track with a little imagination. Well I did it thank you sir. Ps I’m not a mechanic like u n others on TH-cam. Thank you again with your video in how to fix that rack n pinion n other videos from other mechanics on TH-cam in how to fix other related problems I was able to get done n learn something new. Thank u again god blessed. Ps can it be possible if u can make a video on TH-cam on how to change the timing chain on this vehicle? 😎✌🏽

Hello my friend, I have a question: When I start turning the wheel it makes a squealing sound, and when I turn it all the way it starts shaking a bit. Would replacing the rack solve that problem?
Well 1st check your power steering fluid level. If it’s low fill it up. Then drive the car and see if the squealing goes away. If this did not fix the problem start checking for power steering leaks from the pump, hoses, and the rack n pinion boots….the black accordion looking boots on the inner tie rods…if that leaking then Yes replace the rack n pinion….any fluid leak anywhere in that system causes your issues because the system is sucking in air everytime you steer the car. By all means you can message be back on your progress.. 🙏

Hello to everyone, just want to say that I follow this video n the Amazon parts that was shown n I did this work on my 07 accord 2.4 around less than two years ago n everything still going strong, thanks brother. Now my question is have you done a pan oil gasket replacement? If so can y’all hit me up with the link? Because I’m not sure 🤔 but I think mines is leaking but not sure if that’s the problem, I just want to know how this job is done because I was under my car n man this looks easy n not at the same time. Thanks y’all ✌🏼😎
The new rack and pinion in, but the steering wheel is still stiff. We prime the fuild by turning the wheel multiple times. But there is still air trap in the system we put new hoses with new clamps new power steering pump. Can anyone tell me what is wrong?
Can you please give me advice. I have a 2007 Honda Accord. It has about 185,000. When I took it to get an oil change they noticed a PS Leak. I assumed I filled it too much and it leaked over. My dad sprayed it off and told me to keep an eye out. Well maybe 4-5 days later there was smoke coming from the passenger side of my hood & the power steering had leaked again. Most lines, the reservoir & even my alternator were covered in the oil. I could even see some under the alternator just sitting and kind of burnt one. I have no idea what to do. Any advice ?
Thanks for the great video, I've been trying to find a video on how to do the same work for a 2010 Accord, but can't find any vids anywhere nearly as descriptive as yours, would you say a 2010 (2008-2012) has pretty much the same methods? I've done a rack and pinion replacement on a 2007 camry and have to say it was much easier than this is looking to be, thanks again for the great video!
Hi I installed a brand new power steering pump Honda 2007 V6 and is still whining and hard to turn do you think it's the rack and pinion has something to do with it
I CANNOT for the life of me get that 14mm motor mount out with a wrench. I have blasted it with pb blaster but there is so little room. Any tools you would suggest? It’s the bolt facing the cabin and in ur video it just pops off 😮
Always take pictures, the more detailed the better. But you can look up the shop manual and it has an exploded diagram of the mount and shows bolt sizes 👍
@GasDiesel Garage - i hope u can give me an opinion on my Honda steering issue i have, the Dealer tells me its my gearbox.... without even telling u my issue, how in the world does a gearbox relate to the steering... in summary i experience 1 click/knock/creak sound on the first moment u turn the wheel and then its absolutely silent.... but i drive for 30 second forward or keep car in stationary position, the steering makes the same sound and u can feel it in the steering also, and somewhat in your foot on the ground of the car. Ive seen comments saying shocks or mounts, for me i just dont understand how its shocks or mounts. My car is practically new and has 2500 odd kilometers on the clock, would love to know your opinion
@@alexanderconstantine7529 just a little future info…..Hondas most used sizes are 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 13mm, 14mm, 17mm, 18mm, 19mm….that’s for sockets and wrenches…
Just turn the steering wheel from side to side…(with reservoir cap on)…you can jack up the front end to make it easier for you. Hondas are pretty easy to bleed
Check your lower control arm bushings and ball joints. Jack the front end up and shake each tire from top to bottom and side to side…make sure there’s nothing loose.

Great video! Helping my sons friend replace this Saturday. I ordered the same one you mentioned. You didn’t go over the grease fittings that you have to install on the outer tie rods. Do you just install those and pump them full with grease?
what size is the flare nut? can i loosen it with adjustable wrench? or maybe with an open wrench?
Hey I don’t know the name of the line that connects to rack and pinion it’s not the power steering pump line. It the other one that comes off of it
My problem now is the clock spring broke months ago and had been driving it the whole time now my steering wheel is to the point I don't know what to do! How do I get it to where it's supposed to be so I don't break another clock spring? I'm tired of dumping money into this damn car but it's all I have
@10:09 it shows a 10mm bolt. On my 03 EX V6. I see a Torx bolt. Hoping i'm ok. Btw- Thank you for this video. Saving me some $$$$ rn. 👊💪🔧
Similar on a 2011 2.4 dohc?
Yes
Where did you buy your new unit and is it holding up?
@@truthseeker1203 sorry for late response, i got on Amazon. I just not that comfortable with the outer tie rods because is those did u got to fill your self with a grease gun, they not that bad I just feel more comfortable if they already come fill. Good price n quality , it those the job. 👍🏽
@@Gasdieselgarage Thank you, I shall check!
Is the procedure the same on the 3.5 V6?
Yes pretty much….it’s just a tighter space to work around because the engine is bigger.
U just earned yourself a new subscriber 👍🏾🙏🏾
Do the height pressure and low pressure hoses take o rings?
Thank you like will h said I was feeling iffy about this diy but thanks to you and your sweet video I'm just waiting for morning to go and attack⚙️ this job especially with them beats 😎🤙 thank you again gdg
Always my friend. Ty for the feedback. If you get stumped on anything just message me
I appreciate it absolutely I will
You didn’t had to center the new rack and pinion before installing???
You said it was a new Detroit axel rack but I think all they have is reman?
Yes you’re probably right
Thank you for sharing
Hello to everyone, just want to say that I follow this video n the Amazon parts that was shown n I did this work on my 07 accord 2.4 around less than two years ago n everything still going strong, thanks brother. Now my question is have you done a pan oil gasket replacement? If so can y’all hit me up with the link? Because I’m not sure 🤔 but I think mines is leaking but not sure if that’s the problem, I just want to know how this job is done because I was under my car n man this looks easy n not at the same time. Thanks y’all ✌🏼😎
What size for the lines
The new rack and pinion in, but the steering wheel is still stiff. We prime the fuild by turning the wheel multiple times. But there is still air trap in the system we put new hoses with new clamps new power steering pump. Can anyone tell me what is wrong?
I know it sounds weird but just let it run for a while…(not turning the wheel) Honda’s a good for bleeding the air out by itself.
Ty GDG, thus helps a lot
Thanks 🙏 you’re awesome man
Can you please give me advice.
Great information GDG!
It’s the bolt facing the cabin and in ur video it just pops off 😮
Finally got it off. Had to find a socket wrench ling enough to break it but fit in that space.
For the engine mount I’m realizing that these bolts are all different sizes. Any way you remember or have an imagine of which goes where?
What is the year, make, and model of your car?
Honda refers to the steering rack as a ‘steering gearbox’.
thank you
You’re welcome my friend
Hi, I couldn’t lose the engine mount I have a 2009 accord. But still this is a great DIY video.
Topman great video and you have a new subscriber
Ty my friend
Hey I gotta do this on my TSX soon. What's an update on that rack 9 months later or do you not still have the car?
Still doing good. No leaks or issues. The rubber boots aren’t even dry rotted.
What size bolts are the powering steering hose connectors?
17mm
But I’d use a flare nut wrench if you have access to one because they can strip easily with a regular line wrench
Thank you so much for the information. Only have one car so I gotta prep wisely before I start.
@@alexanderconstantine7529 just a little future info…..Hondas most used sizes are 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 13mm, 14mm, 17mm, 18mm, 19mm….that’s for sockets and wrenches…
You’re absolutely right!….doing it myself is a whole lot cheaper.
How do u bleed the system with out air in it
Just turn the steering wheel from side to side…(with reservoir cap on)…you can jack up the front end to make it easier for you. Hondas are pretty easy to bleed
New sub! Thanks for this vid I'll be doing mine soon as I get down time
Ty so much for the support my friend.
Is it holding up? I heard Detroit axle is a nightmare?
Just replaced mine but i notice it clunks when fully locked when im backing up.. what do you think is wrong?
Check your lower control arm bushings and ball joints. Jack the front end up and shake each tire from top to bottom and side to side…make sure there’s nothing loose.
How about a Honda with 3.5 ltr V6
How long did it take to get the rack from Amazon?
Anyone notice outside tierods ( new ) looked like they went on wrong sides
Great work GDG
The link you left for the rack n pin wasn't for a 2005. I need a 2005 one...anyone have a link for a price on one
Rockauto has them for about 360
Nicely done
Ty my friend.
Thank you!!!!!
2003 coupe same?
Yes it should be the same.
cool ass intro bro 🔥
Good video) doin it today)
Ty for the great information
Is this almost the same process for a 3.0 V6?
Yes sir
@@Gasdieselgarage Thank you for your response! Is Detroit Axle a good replacement? I would buy OEM, but it's quite a price difference. What's your opinion on Detroit Axle for Steering Rack/Pinion?
@@stephenfoster1196 Detroit axle is not bad at all …I’d put one of those in…thing you got to remember is all of these rack n pinions are nothing but seals inside them….rubber that basically wears out over time.
Have to admit, way too much work for me. Nothing ever comes out of my car like on the youtube videos show. Where are you and how much do you charge?
Awesome video! A shop will charge you $1500 for this.
That’s right
Damn!! Maybe i should open up a shop! Ha
I like the video and thanks for doing this. However, just a clarification. You only have to undo one of the motor mounts or all 4?
Just the one
good job
How much you charge me to to this job in the same car
My power steering pump sound very bad but i think its because the rack and pinion 😮
You're hired.
Where can we meet
Awesome
this rack is a pain in the butt
Wow, that is a lot of work. Are you mobile? 😅🤣😂
Sure seems to me that RWD vehicles were a lot easier 😊
you skipped a few steps removing the motor mount
Yes you’re right….I lost that part of the video unfortunately. I stand corrected sir
@@Gasdieselgarage its all good i figured it out
