Sunfish sailing through ice

  • We've been wanting to sail through icy water for a couple years. The Sunfish are smaller than Hobie 16's for fitting through channels in the ice. Comment whether you would try this and what you think about our adventure.

    It’s been a while, but loved this video. Ice sailing might be the next big thing for us Sunfish sailors.

    This is awesome. I just bought a sunfish last fall and joked to my friends that i wanted to go out during the winter, since its been so warm up here around superior(i live in the U.P.) i really wanted to though, and they think im crazy, but i dont blame them. However its really cool seeing other people with the same mindset ACTUALLY DOING IT! i only have a wetsuit though, and one day when i find a drysuit for a good price ill give this a try. Thanks for the video!

      Go for it! Amy had a wetsuit with layers over top. If you at least have a dry top, splash top, or rain jacket and rain pants it will help a lot with capturing any evaporated heat from the wetsuit. I've kayaked around floating ice and been whitewater rafting in head numbing water with a wetsuit and that worked pretty well. They just make my skin itch now if I wear them for too long so I found an affordable drysuit and went for it. You could share this with your friends and convince them you're not crazy...although it can also be fun to be "crazy". Thanks for watching.

      That's fun too...and maybe a little more practical. I've kayaked up onto ice and kayak surfed around chunks of ice. Sounds like you have a kindred spirit.

    Wow! And I previously thought your Isle Royale voyage was crazy! I am sticking to my shorty wet suit sailing on cold Newfound Lake in the summer! I am itching to get back on the water sailing my Sunfish! Great video! Thanks - Dave

      You should absolutely get back on the water! A shorty plus a spray jacket is a pretty warm combo...just not for super early spring. Have you seen this video of sailing around the Apostles with 2 Sunfish and a Hobie 16? th-cam.com/video/SyhUSHPB_nE/w-d-xo.html

    I would be a little worried about the impact on the centerboard slot when you hit the ice at 4:10. It is a known spot for cracked fiberglass and subsequent leaks. But it looked like you had a blast! Love your videos.

    • @AdventuresInReach
      @AdventuresInReach  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had the same concern...to an extent. I push this little boat and it's bottomed out on rocks and sand bars a couple times. The boat still leaks a bit but I figure I might as well keep having new experiences. This was super fun. If it gets too beat up I'll either need to repair or find another. Thanks for watching!

    If I recall correctly, Alcort originally made sailing iceboats before going on to create the Sunfish. So in a way, the sunfish is returning to its roots in this video. Looks like a lot of fun was had. Stay safe… and warm :-)

    • @AdventuresInReach
      @AdventuresInReach  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A quick search found this on sailboatdata.com: "The name ALCORT derived from the nick names of it's founders, Alex Bryan and Cortland Heyniger, both of Waterbury, Connecticut. They started in around 1941 building and selling SKEETER class iceboats." I never heard that before. Thanks for the history!

      @@AdventuresInReach I agree completely. With our weather this year, the first warm up tricked us. I cannot blame you for sailing early.

      @AdventuresInReach  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Are you not a fan of the Hobie videos? I do think the Sunfish is about the most basic, pure form of sailing you can do, and you have to be in sink with the boat.

      @@AdventuresInReach I have to admit that you made it look fun! Did you ever get your ice picks back?
      I am getting the Sunfish out this week. The water in the Chesapeake is finally in the upper 40s, so I’ll still be wearing my wet suit for a while yet. I used to play ice breaker with my old heavy Grumman, and ended up in the freezing water a few times. In my younger years that was almost fun. Now that I am nearly 70 I no longer find it quite so appealing!

    • @AdventuresInReach
      @AdventuresInReach  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Falling into cold water isn't very fun workout a suit on, but that would seem odd for flatware canoeing. Have fun sailing the Chesapeake! I did get my ice access back. The floats held them up then Nate and Amy picked them up for me.
