Adventures In Reach (AIR) hopes to expand what adventures are possible for you, teach the skills to help make that happen, inspire you to get out of a rut, and increase your confidence outdoors. We encourage you to challenge yourself and try something new, from a backyard adventure to an expedition. Although all outdoor adventures are fair game, AIR generally focuses on small sailboat or Sunfish sailboat sailing and camping, rappelling, knots, ropes, hammock camping, outdoor adventures with dogs, compass orienteering, canoeing, wilderness travel, outdoor gear, camping, hiking, and cold weather camping and survival.

    I wonder if when you see the heat pattern for the back side with the sleeping bag, if that's heat that was trapped for some time in the sleeping bag loft as a result of that loft being sandwiched between the emitter (your body) and the insulator (the ground pad. No other sides of your body in the test had this benefit.

    So it's not FLIR, it is thermal imaging. FLIR scans a scene and assembles an image. You are actually doing thermal imaging. No biggie but when it comes to tech words matter.

    If you buy a quilt with all the extras from UGQ that keep it tight around you and roll inside it rather than rolling the quilt with you creating a draft you notice a REAL difference and no need for a full bag. Mine only goes down to -21f but I’ve never had an issue other than I had mine made to be dual purpose hammock/ground so it does briefly let in a draft at the knee on the ground but it holds so much heat paired with the Xtherm and their Synergy sheet you barely notice once you’ve settled after a roll.

    Highly suggest NOT using a carabiner for your last method. Carabiners are not designed for the side load a tree will put on them. A quick link is a much better device for this use. Personally, I rappel with your last method all the time and love it, though depending on the tree and how you hook into it, it can be tough to retrieve at times.

    What is the long rope for that drags behind the Kicksled?

    • @AdventuresInReach
      @AdventuresInReach หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's called a snub line and is used for tying off the dog team to a tree, sign post, car, etc. when stopped or releasing to start. Some mushers prefer to wrap it around the handlebars, and some prefer to let it drag as a last ditch way to avoid losing the team if they fall off. It's probably not necessary for a small kicksled team, but it's a habit.

  • @Xhadp

    I don’t understand the weight argument? You can find sleeping bags with the same temp rating as a quilt for only 4oz more which is hardly a weight penalty at all. As for the rest of the differences? Seems to be mostly personal preference for choice.

    • @AdventuresInReach
      @AdventuresInReach หลายเดือนก่อน

      You certainly can find sleeping bags the same weight, but in general quilts are lighter without the extra fabric, insulation, and zipper length, and that weight savings generally comes at a lower price tag than comparable weight sleeping bag. But, it is certainly personal preference too.

  • @laurahompus
    @laurahompus หลายเดือนก่อน

    Am I stupid, or can I just turn my very snug and comfy warm sleeping bag into a quilt by simply opening the zipper when I feel the need for more room to move my legs?

    • @AdventuresInReach
      @AdventuresInReach หลายเดือนก่อน

      You absolutely can do that. Sleeping bags generally weigh more than quilts because of the extra fabric, insulation, and zipper length. The draw to quilts is usually more about weight than having room to move.

    • @AdventuresInReach
      @AdventuresInReach หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agreed. I use my mummy during the winter so I have the hood, no drafts, and a lower rating. 3 season the quilt performs well at a fraction of the weight. I was really curious to compare drafts and heat loss, and although it's not a totally complete picture, I found some surprising results. Thanks for watching!

    • @AdventuresInReach

      The other comments about soft on soft is spot on. The only exception to that is if you tie the two soft lines together. Tying rope to webbing is not the norm. You could use rated cordage to construct the demonstrated anchor and tie the rappel rope into that. However, the standard/best practice is to connect with a carabiner.

    Very interesting to see the IR camera footage, although this only shows radiative heat loss. I feel like a lot of these things depend on your size and sleeping habits. This might just be because I'm very small so sleeping bags are never snug on me, but I roll inside the sleeping bag; it's uncomfortable and claustrophobic to lie on the zip. And also being very small (and a tossy-turny sleeper), I get cold easily, so something that lets cold air in when I move around is a problem.

    • @AdventuresInReach
      @AdventuresInReach หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes. There are a ton of factors that effect the warmth of a sleep system aside from radiant heat loss. The infrared camera does not only pick up radiant loss as you can see conductive in this footage as well. Aside from that the insulation type, moisture in the bag, dead air space that needs to be heated, and much more all has an effect.

    Here's a trick. When you're on a beam reach in a good breeze and flat water, like this, if you pull the daggerboard up about 6 - 8 inches she'll pop right up on a plane and everything gets easier. It will stay on a plane right up to a close reach. In anything further off wind the daggerboard should be as much out of the water as possible. I suggest you tackle the things below to get the most out of your Fish. 1. Get a modern plastic daggerboard. Those fuzzy edged wooden ones are death to speed. 2. Put in a hiking strap and get everything beyond your knees (+-) outside the boat when needed -- keep it flat!. Hiking pants and shoes will help with that. 3. Install a universal joint hiking stick and check out other vids on how to use it. 4. Get rid of those plastic clips and tie each grommet to the spar. Again, other vids. 5. Rig outhauls on both spars. AOV. 6. Rig a downhaul. AOV. 7. Learn how to make a Jens rig for those really heavy days. AOV. 8. Etc. But best of all, find a Fish fleet near you and learn to race. Enjoyment will increase by a factor of 10! ======================= My best story? I've got a few, here's a good one. Corpus Christi Texas has about a 9 mile diameter bay right out front. CCB is right on the exact north west corner of the Gulf of Mexico. It's shallow, perhaps 15 to 20 feet deep, and has a low barrier island right upwind of the harbor. Without going into the details, that means that when things warm up, as they tend to do in south Texas, the afternoon breeze is usually 18 to 25 mph, occasionally up to 35, with absolutely amazing chop. About 6 feet trough to crest, and a frequency 15 -20 feet, depending on depth. A real bear to sail upwind, but we didn't do that, we trailered the boats up to CCA&M and sailed down to the T-heads (local info...). Not straight downwind, but reaching across the seemingly vertical waves, following the sets. Imagine for yourself, please.

      @AdventuresInReach You got it wrong, man. I meant to blame it to my fault. Thanks so much for this tip. Man, it truly works

    You need to clarify "a long way". I grew up in a mountainous region and it's fine to take a bearing from a long distance to get an idea of where you're heading, but you can get lost easily in some terrains by doing that. I'd argue that once you know which direction you're heading in, it's wiser to take repeated bearings as you go. Compasses aren't that accurate over long distances mate, even the best of them.
