How dry are dry bags and Ziplocs really?
Using the proper dry bag and closing it correctly solves the soggy sleeping bag problem, the wet wet clothes discomfort, and the dripping food. You also don't want to dunk your keys, wallet, or other valuables when out on the water! This video shows 5 options and exactly how effective they are when fully submersed under water. I also show how to seal each bag, considerations, and the full results. Enjoy.

You did such an excellent job explaining this in a short in a manner that I was able to understand, where others' 20+ minute videos were convoluted and complicated. You made it so simple, you have a skill for teaching and delivering information
Well thank you. That's an excellent compliment and I'm happy to hear it was helpful! I just filmed another simple video about how to use a compass in the easiest possible manner. That should be coming out in the next few weeks.
This really helped! If you have too many experiences in the Risk-Danger zone you retreat into the comfort zone. My World has shrunk down because my brain only understands the 2 extremes. I know have a visual for how preparation and skill building will expand my life again. Danke!
Awesome! This isn't one of my more popular videos and I considered taking it down...but didn't because I was hoping it would help to encourage someone. Mission accomplished!
Fun to watch this adventure! I'd love to do something like this
Is there anything stopping you?
Brilliant little sailboat
Absolutely! This little boat has been through a lot, especially during my videos sailing 150 miles around Isle Royale National Park. It just kept chugging along underwater for this one.
28 degrees? Id take a sleeping bag with u to use as a blanket and store it in a waterproof bag until u wana use it as a cover thru then
Are you saying to do this instead of being inside the bag...as a safety measure?
How do you get your rope down?
There are several options...but I have just the video to answer your question: th-cam.com/video/w9nJuQ2tF7w/w-d-xo.html
It seems to me that you would only have 4,000lbs of strength per anchor, not 8,000 as stated in the video. Each tree only has one loop actually going around it.
Good job with the Polynesian steering
Ha. That's a good term. I actually named my boat "Rudderless" after this trip.
I would never have been able to get the damn knot out of the cord that had a knot that had to come out for my project without your video. Thank you
I keep hearing these success stories. I'm glad this was helpful. It's certainly frustrating if you have a rope or cord to use but can't get one stinkin knot out.
Great knot for 2 lines!
Absolutely. I used to use this if I needed to extend the line on bear hangs when hanging food bags for big groups. It was so simple to remove in the morning. I don't use it often, but it's always a frustration saver when I do.
I have a 1971 sunfish with the exact opposite color patterns. Red with yellow stripes on the deck and a yellow hull.
Sweet! I hope you're getting out sailing that thing.
that poor boat became a sail powered submarine lol
Yes it did! It was pretty goofy to see it still moving (slowly) while fully under water.
cool video!
Thank you! If you haven't seen them already, I made a series of 5 videos. That was quit an epic trip. th-cam.com/play/PLNcpRGw7T0bgjjYL7CiiZMT1rRCJxItht.html
Using the halyards as a down haul. Brilliant. Thanks!
Very simple. I can't take credit as I saw it mentioned off hand somewhere several years ago. It really does help a ton to keep the sail flattened a bit and more under control in high winds.
i slept in sharon lake for 4 years nobody evr noticed me
You slept on a boat for 4 years? What kind?
Always wanted to get a small sail boat and your videos convinced me to get a sunfish. Will be picking it up in 3 days Thank you for the motivation to finally go through with this.
Hello. That's awesome! You are certainly welcome for the motivation. I hope the pickup went well and you've been out sailing!
@@AdventuresInReach little fixing was needed on it. It’s ready now just waiting on a chance to hit the water.
This is where it all started for me, very many years ago. This weekend we take delivery on a Swan 59.
A Swan 59 is a huge leap from a Sunfish! Are you going to be living on it or doing any long trips?
@@AdventuresInReach We plan to move aboard in a few years and travel the entire globe. In the end, if you can sail a Sunfish well, you can sail anything.
That pad is so effing loud
Ha! Yes...yes it is. It's actually a lot less noisy than it was when it was brand new. It's warm, lightweight, and comfortable, and I sleep pretty sound so it doesn't bother me too much. However, if you camp close to others, them may complain.
This looked like so much fun
It was an awesome day sailing. We had a ton of fun in the spicy conditions.
Good way to scare her off
I was thinking the same thing, which is why we discussed it quite a bit before going. I knew she was pretty adventurous and she expressed her comfort with swimming and with being in the water. She trusted her PFD and knew I had a lot of experience in much worse conditions. And she loved it and was talking about buying a Sunfish for herself.
Awesome sailing man!
Thank you! That was a fun day!
Good to see the Dunkirk reenactment community is still alive and thriving
Ha. Pack them on and transport them out of there!...although our transport was pretty slow.
I have no ideas why, but I really want to learn how to do all this. I don't even like heights, but im always into survival stuff and knowing how to do things like this. Already ordered a bunch of equipment, so now I'm into it.. Also I work for a home building company and I want to get over the fear of heights so i can do the sheeting on the roofs we do. I always wonder how much it would suck to fall and get stopped by one of those harness rigs that comes in a bucket.
I'm guessing you will become more comfortable with heights as you learn and practice. In this video I talk about starting small with slight slopes, stairs, porches, etc. and working up. th-cam.com/video/RVoze1IpdVI/w-d-xo.html If you get to the point of practicing in vertical settings, a roof with a rope backup would likely feel pretty comfortable. I guess the why doesn't matter so much if you like it and are interested. It's all a learning experience that is bound to lead somewhere. The harness rigs should be paired with a shock absorbing fall protection lanyard. Those have folds in the webbing that are sewn together and manufactured to rip and give away at a specific kilonewton rating to avoid damaging the body. In that case you don't have the space to fall onto a stretchy dynamic rope, but they are in theory supposed to accomplish the same slowed fall.
Would be easier to mark a way point and then navigate back to this instead of using the compass just my opinion and how I navigate when im off track. Everyone is an expert lol
Absolutely! That's what I was demonstrating--making a waypoint and navigating back. The compass is just to walk in the direction that the GPS is pointing you as it can be a way to save batteries.

At the extremes, a quilt isn't an option and nether is ultralight camping. You don't need infrared to know this, I tested it for you. You only need to spend one night cutting firewood and doing cardio in the dark while trying to keep from freezing to death to know I'm telling you the truth. Hopefully you're the sort to learn from other peoples mistakes. Quilts are my jam until it dips a bit below freezing unless it's being used over-top of a sleeping bag.
I agree. I don't use a quilt or go lightweight during the winter. The quilt is really only for traveling light during 3 seasons.
Wow! And I previously thought your Isle Royale voyage was crazy! I am sticking to my shorty wet suit sailing on cold Newfound Lake in the summer! I am itching to get back on the water sailing my Sunfish! Great video! Thanks - Dave
You should absolutely get back on the water! A shorty plus a spray jacket is a pretty warm combo...just not for super early spring. Have you seen this video of sailing around the Apostles with 2 Sunfish and a Hobie 16? th-cam.com/video/SyhUSHPB_nE/w-d-xo.html
When you go naming your gear and it sounds like organic chemistry equasions, that's my que to hide the video and scroll on.
Thanks for the honest feedback. I actually went back and reviewed the retention data and ended up cutting out those first 11 seconds of the video. I truly appreciate helpful feedback. If you want to come back and watch without the organic chemistry part, feel free!
I prefer using a quilt as I find sleeping bags too confining, but I don’t camp below 30 degrees! I have 2 quilts that my wife made for me: a light one for summer, a heavier one for cooler weather, and I use them together when it’s cold. The lighter one is extra large and gets wrapped around me if I’m cold. Yes, it’s heavy, but I usually camp on my bike or one of my boats. No down! Everything gets weight when I camp. Synthetics work better for me.
That's great. I'm supportive of anything that works and it sounds like you found a solution for yourself. I only use my quilt 3 season. It's funny because I actually prefer being confined in a sleeping bag, but I prefer carrying less weight even more.
@@AdventuresInReach I camp a lot out on the water in my kayak or one of my canoes. Being stuck in a sleeping bag at the wrong time would be bad!
I hammock camp, so I don't have the drafting issues thanks to the second underquilt. However... I can see the value of a sleeping bag for those out there tossing and turning. that looked cold
If the straps are set up well and you're halfway conscious when rolling, it's really not cold. That being said, I always bring a sleeping bag when winter camping.
I know you are not supposed to let down get wet, but for the life of me I don't understand how the ducks and geese manage that trick lol
The down that is used for our insulation is underneath the outside feathers on birds. It's like the undercoat on a dog vs the guard hairs. I've watched our collie go swimming, get out, shake off, be wet on the outside but dry underneath his guard hairs. When we remove the hairs or feathers that seal water out, we are left with vulnerable, but highly effective, insulation.
🤔 and people like that better than a bag? Baffled. Utterly unimpressed.
The funny thing is that I prefer a sleeping bag as well--I use a quilt for backpacking because it's lighter, which to me is worth the small hassle and learning curve. Quilts are still surprisingly warm, comfortable, and ... lightweight.
You may want to watch the earlier video (if you haven’t already seen it) as it demonstrates why quilts are sometimes a better choice.
@@clydeosterhout1221 Any air gap is too much for me unless I've done it intentionally. I will check out the other video though. I haven't seen it.
Yeah, if you're sleeping on a pad on the ground, I dont really get why people dont just use a bag. But if you're like me and prefer to sleep in a hammock while camping, a top and bottom quilt combo make more sense.
Good information. Thank you.
Thank you for watching. I hope it's helpful.
Thank you foe watching. I hope it's helpful.
Great video for new quilt users. I have exactly the same quilt. On cold nights, I have even attached the quilt directly to itself in the top section instead of using the strap. You just have to kind of hold the quilt in place when you turn around. Another thing to experiment with is where to place the bottom strap (that goes around the pad). I like it just below my butt, with the clips rather close together if it's cold. This increases the angle that the quilt sides make towards the top of your body, minimizing drafts. I also tend to use a (stretchy) liner (Sea to Summit Reactor), which further reduces the sensation of drafts. The only annoying thing is that my arms need to be outside the liner because I need to be able to adjust the quilt when turning around.
I haven't tried that. I seem to like the pad assisting me with keeping the quilt in place. Do you end up squishing the insulation by wrapping it so tight?
@@AdventuresInReach You do end up lying on top of the quilt edges, of course. It becomes like a sleeping bag in a way. In my experience it gives maximum warmth, though... Give it a try! Everybody is different, but the nice thing about quilts is how easily you can adjust things to your preference.
Huh? Are you trying to say you wrap the quilt around your body without hassling about with attachments to the camping mattress or something of the sort?
@@haliaeetus8221 The bottom strap remains attached to the pad with both attachments points very close together. The top strap I sometimes don't use and then I just attach the quilt to itself. I think EE mention this somewhere in their instruction video.

I got rapel gear to go off what used to be a railroad bridge over a creek in my city, its now a public bridge that go built right on top minus the rails. I usually magnet fosh in the creek and have found ww2 munitions, but wanted this to get cooser to the water
That sounds fun. Obviously be careful, and make sure you know how to ascent the rope, and have a comfortable harness (ideally with a seat) so you don't cut off circulation.

Any interest in creating a Great Lakes Dinghy Sailing Club? I have a Laser 2 and would really like to find other dinghy sailors to explore the Apostles and others.
Hello. I would certainly have interest in periodically joining club outings... However, at this point I have too much on my plate to take on creating and facilitating a sailing club. There are several people who have contacted me about sailing around the apostles. I've been doing hobie 16 trips the last couple years but I'm also interested in doing a small dinghy trip again soon. Holy s indeed! Looks scary 😊
4 dogs is a bit much, but scootering with dogs in general is a blast.
There is a specific use for this knot, BUT the application it's normally taught in just isn't helpful. Use it to reef a sail...and that's about it.
Reef knot. Very specific use.
Yes. Using it to reef a sail is about the only use I've found where it's better than other knots...although the surgeons knot is still sometimes easier for that too. Thanks for watching.
Thanks!
Thank you !
Awesome instructional video. A lot of people will learn from tip #4, because let's face it, nobody ever reads the owner's manuals, and with roll top bags, they just start rolling and that's good enough at the time. I never thought about the air in the dry bag, but I might start doing that to use the bag as an air-filled pillow when sleeping.
I've seen numerous people roll the ends in first, despite the instructions. It just doesn't work. The air will squeeze out over time so the pillow idea may work for a while but I'd be surprised it it lasted the night.
Your channel is awesome! You are offering great content. I have a question, would you do some content about tarp pitches? People always show tarp pitch configurations but NEVER the best knots!! Or, if you’re available for paid consult, let me know.
