Kyoji Sasaki is determined to change this. VICE Japan shadows him as he travels to key points along the diamond supply chain, from Sri Lanka to Israel, and negotiates his way into the inner circle of the global diamond syndicate.

Very little focus was put towards the supposed topic "Taking Down Tokyo's Corrupt Diamond Syndicate". There was one part in which Kyoji mentioned that he does not want to deal with other Japanese dealers. Aside from that, most of the focus was on outsourcing higher quality diamonds than available in the Japanese market etc. I'm not disappointed, just felt like pointing this out.

Do people really not realize that he’s trying to take down the corrupt markets by being legit and not some shady business trying to provide to a select few and possibly not even truly valued products by taking the spotlight away from them almost completely...?
yes people we get it, diamonds are just old shiny rocks with no intrinsic value....just like paper money, stock certificates, yellow metal and the like, but people still attribute value to it like an new phone or whatever. The point is it's a HUGELY protected closed industry. This guy is making a break into it and coming out a baller
+jctai100 Economics 101: value is often, if not exclusively, derived from an object's scarcity. This person has discovered he can cut out the middlemen and acquire the goods wholesale. The only surprising thing in this whole video and the only reason he can make lots of cash is that Japan's diamond market is strangely behind the times for such a well developed nation in almost every other commercial endeavour.
Human beings are weird like that. For example, baseball cards or Magic the gathering cards. Some cards are still worth hundreds to thousands of bucks. Why? Because humans assigned value to them. Water however, are deemed to worth cents to a gallon despite we could die not having them.
Values are arbitrary.
+jctai100 It has intrinsic value, for being extremely hard (useful in cutting tools), reflecting light a certain way (useful in lasers) and for being rare on Earth compared to other minerals.
GOLD, rubies, emeralds etc. on the other hand has no intrinsic value.
+Baleur gold has intrinsic value too. its used in electronics.
+Baleur Gold is highly conducted and is exceptionally corrosion resistant. Rubies are used in watches for their exceptional scratch resistance, but I would rank them well below diamonds, gold in usefulness.
Note on diamonds: artificial diamonds can replace real diamonds in utilitarian applications.

If any body bothered to do 5 minutes worth of research they would discover 80% of their value stems from DeBeers monopoly on them and strict market access.
When the SHTF & you need liquidity dont expect to get much for that 5k+ diamond!
Hell you'll prob be better off simply prying off the diamond & selling the gold/platinum band.

Title of story is egregious. This has next to nothing to do with corruption in Tokyo's diamond market. This was a story about a Japanese man who is trying to get in to a very closed syndicate and to cut out the middlemen in the Japanese market.

+ThiRiel Well I Googled the question and quickly found myself in a complex web of stories, family dynasties, and power plays dating back over the past 20+ years. After two hours into it I know I have just scratched the surface. Would definitely make for interesting investigative journalism.
Definitely, I think it all came down to Jews being in the right place at the right time, and over time came to dominate the diamond market. I agree, it is a really interesting topic.

Diamonds are super overrated. 1. It's expensive because of how de Beers marketed diamonds as the symbol of love, and how the single player in the diamond industry is able to control the diamond prices since there's noany competition. 2. The diamonds you get may be blood diamonds, used to support warlords. 3. Diamonds are not forever - they burn more easily than cheaper gemstones.
Just get the cheaper gemstones. They look as good. Or gems made from the contaminants in the air (google it) to support the environment. They can start dinner conversations. Don't follow the crowd and buy diamonds just cause everyone else is doing it.
Either sell diamonds to stupid people, or boycott the purchase of diamonds.

i think ur underestimating the power the main diamond dealers have the fact there is a japanese market at all is only able to exist because these big dealers allow them to do so it would be so easy for them to use translators also th address the issue of language barrier
