  • 78-year-old Masafumi Nagasaki is the sole resident of a tropical island located at the southern tip of Okinawa, Japan. He would rather obey the demands of nature than of another person, which is what led him to escape civilization and live on Sotobanari Island. We decided to go and find out exactly what kind of lifestyle he's leading, and why he chooses not to wear clothes.

      whitehorseusa nothing to lose? he gave up a comparatively comfortable lifestyle that he used to have when he was working...gave up friends (except for that one guy who visits him now and then), gave up pretty much all modern conveniences as well...most of us want that same kind of satisfaction he has with his relatively basic lifestyle, but not many are willing to give it up

      If they weren't covered by protective skin then they would be dry. Look at the majority of mammals, as they have skin to cover the sensitive areas of their genitalia. Therefore, there is no need to censor genitalia.

      Most people don't, as the human anatomy is not taught as well as it should be. Humans evolved with coverings for the protection of inner tissue vital for reproduction, as an example would be the prepuce. The "shame" that is associated with nakedness can be directly related to primitive human feelings. Religion formed as a tool to create large tribes that were easy to manipulate. Religion later shamed to idea of nakedness and reproduction to eliminate primitive nature altogether. Biology and Psychology have always been at an interesting quarrel.

      +Thomas Baddeley It's true though. The way humans murder animals by the billions, not even for survival but for sheer taste ('bacon tho'), is absolutely insane and incredibly selfish (and destroying our planet too).

    • @zorgitron
      @zorgitron 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Thrumbolt the Great I guess you can't understand that human survival is much more sophisticated than just sustenance. The same brain that allows us to imagine being eaten from an animals point of view also requires a high level of satisfaction and security to function well in society. Human brains really need a ton of stuff to be healthy.
      Just admit it; you wouldn't be yourself if you only ate the required amount of adequately tasting gruel day in and day out.

    • @thrumugnyr
      @thrumugnyr 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +zorgitron Well, I eat vegan, so I definitely try to cause as little suffering as possible, especially towards sentient beings. But while many people think this is an ascetic lifestyle, I do in fact eat quite a variety of plants and foods. Mostly regional, but obviously I'm not completely unselfish. As a human, that's kinda impossible ;D Variety is nice, but it's not so much the variety that's the issue as that people destroy all our resources because they want to eat animals.
      Honestly tho, I'd be fine with just rice, bananas or whatever else grows there and shellfish if I could live on that island :D

      +Michael Maynard Interestingly enough, quite a lot of homeless people in germany or "beggars" or "tramps" whatever you wanna call them.... Actually choose to live that way on their own. As welfare is maybe an universal right by constitution, but also not a force. They choose to live that way as they also choose to live indepedent from the state and any institutions. These type of homeless people you can find quite a lot in parks. They are very chilled too and you can sit there with them, talk with them and drink some beers with them. Of course that does not apply to all homeless people obviously. And yeah of course they make their "living" by begging lol, well a few also try to do music or stuff like that.

      He gets money from his sister so he's still living off a sort of welfare. It's within the family, and voluntary. Though we can't be sure that his sister isn't collecting something in his name, like social security. Not trying to take anything away from his way of life; we just can't say for sure how completely disengaged from the system he is.

    I LOVE THIS GUY!!! So wise & articulate. I love when he said, "my body is pure, like a baby in the womb. when u take medication you begin to rely on it." I love that. I *knew* that was really bugging him when the camera guy wouldn't eat the rock oyster or clam. Allergic or not (probably an excuse bcuz he doesn't like it &/or didn't want to eat raw shellfish), in Japan (&with most older ppl) you eat what your served. you come to my home, my private island, you eat what your given. I literally laughed out loud when he said, "allergic to shellfish? must be allergic to women too." When he walked to the water to wash the clam, I could totally tell that was really weighing heavy on his mind when the camera guy declined the rock oyster. And when he said, "that's the selfish excuse humans give, for living things to eat eachother. we should leave as many offspring in the would as possible." AMEN to that! he made me smile ear to ear & brought a tear of happiness to my eye. awesome great guy! I pray he lives well beyond 100! and that's very cool that he has his bestfriend Aoki for 15yrs+ to look out for him & his sisters send him money monthly so he's able to get food & water. this man is an inspiration. I really admire him.

    What he said about being "in tune with nature" mirrors Japanese city society anyway. "If I get too full of myself, nature will have its way of putting me back in my place," he says. Japanese society is often described as "the nail that sticks out gets hammered down." It's all about blending in, being unnoticeable in your environment. So really the core of his way of life may not have changed as much as he thinks it has.

    At one point people didn't wear any clothes. What motivated us to cover ourselves with fabrics probably started from social status, I really don't know. But this guy is butt naked and is happy. So who are you to judge about his standard of living? Although some things I do not agree with him, like not relying on medicines, most of the things that he said is exactly what I can relate to with the rest of the world. The fact that we are all strung to society is a frustrating thought. I mean, we are expected to get a good job with high salary so that we can get married and have children who will also go through the societal pressure. This is an endless cycle . But I envy Nagasaki, he basically has the freedom to do whatever he wants, to live on his own....

      @user-jn1ts4wl1c 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kretzschmeister Probably in northern countries in which people hunted animals for not only meat but fur as well. But not necessarily in tropical or sub-tropical areas were people used to only cover their genitals. Some tribes in africa, south america and in polynesia still do that

    • @user-jn1ts4wl1c
      @user-jn1ts4wl1c 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Kretzschmeister I agree with you 100% that it was as you said, to keep us warm or protect us from the sun. But later on it elevated to what status you belonged. Whether you were a peseant or belonged to a higher class, just simply by what fabric you wore. At first it was a necessity for the purpose of protecting our skin, but as years progressed so did our viewpoint of how we saw what we wore. Now l wouldnt say that it is entirely true, but think about it. Are we wearing clothes for protection or just to show off?

    • @hillbill7016
      @hillbill7016 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tandra Akther Originally, people in tropical regions did not wore clothes likes in South America and Australia natives. Societies living in cold climates wear clothes to protect from nature.

    Calling him a hermit is a bit of stretch, isn't it. He is not self sufficient. He gets money from his sister every month to buy food and eat. He basically depends on the society to stay alive and he bitches about it. He has no enlightening, noble or novel ideas, thoughts, revelations to share.
    He is basically a 78 year old teenager on a 25+ years of vacation, living off the generosity of his well wishers.
    I wouldn't call him a hermit, I'd call him a lucky bum. But, that's just me, oh well, anything that gets people to click on your videos, right Vice ?

    • @Gmol1
      @Gmol1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      Being self sufficient has nothing to do with being a hermit but seclusion from the society which is a completely different thing, thats why a lot of people who depends on the society like Sadhus fall under that definition.
      And I don't understand why are you bitching about the dude, what the hell did you expect? A Japanese possessed by Buddha with super knowledge or what? Dude's living as he likes, he has nothing to prove you or anyone, I really really don't understand you, its like if you were expecting the answer of life from him.

    • @mintoo2cool
      @mintoo2cool 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      i already know that anyone who says he/she knows the meaning of life is a liar, so i was not looking for that in this video or from him...
      there is nothing special or interesting about this man. i don't understand what the fuss is about. his way of life is as much worth documenting as documenting the life of some random starving african man or the homeless on the street at my bus stop. he too is almost naked, starving, and fighting the forces of nature (cold, heat etc) + societal forces that treat him as if he were subhuman.
      and historically, hermits, though they stayed away from societies nonetheless, they maintained contact with society, imparting wisdom, literature of oral tradition and spiritual learning etc, in exchange of charity like food, water temporary shelter etc. they tried to improve society by imparting it with their wisdom and knowledge, risking their lives sometimes as sometimes what they had to say went against the customs/traditions etc. so yeah, i did have some expectation from him, which he failed to meet. all he is doing is taking but not giving anything back.
      he's a detriment to humanity and sets a bad example.
      it's a sensationalist piece of journalism by vice. it lacks substances and garners views by cheap shock and a cheap, unimpressive story.
      i just hope someone reads what i said and not waste the time i wasted on this.

    • @Gmol1
      @Gmol1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      bbababonbon..bonfire! First of all if you don't find the man interesting or the video you could have just stop watching it and leave, there was simply no need for the bitch act you did. If you think there are many other things more interesting out there that are worth of documenting you're free to do it by yourself and post it on TH-cam. Just because you don't find it interesting doesn't mean it isn't, some other people like me find it interesting, not because he's naked or a hermit but because I find fascinating the way other people perceive things.
      Now, moving to the hermit's, you seem to not realize that you're talking about hermit's on the popular culture, in other words, myths, fake stories, tales, etc. Historically 99% of the hermits that have existed has done nothing, there's no such thing as hermits imparting wisdom and all that fairy tail trash. They're normal people that aren't in synchrony with the society as simple as that.

    • @mintoo2cool

      Gmol1 Perhaps I had a higher expectation somehow and stuck till the end and only then realized that this dude was a lazy old bum. Had I accurately judged that this documentary was cheap and uninteresting at the start, we would not be having this conversation, because I wouldn't have cared to post comment on a video I did not watch.
      If you liked the video then more power to you. I could care less about your likes and dislikes.
      I hated it and gave my reasons. I hope that someone who might have similar expectations as I did would stay clear of this after reading my comments.
      As for your make your own documentary and post it bullshit argument, I am not a documentary maker, I am not a journalist. But that does not mean I am not allowed to dislike and express my dislike of the video. I have as much right as expressing my dislike of this documentary as you have your right of expressing your like of this documentary.
      "fairy tail" ? i am going to overlook your lack of understanding of the difference between the part that grows on the posterior of animals and a piece of narrative fiction.
      I may not be documentary maker or a journalist, but what i am is a history enthusiast.There is ample evidence that the spread of organized religion, spread of cults, perpetration of religious superstitions can mostly be traced to people, who lived a reclusive life, and did not fit too well in social structures. it was their abnormal lifestyle and life choices that garnered curiosity among the common village folk. And it didn't take much to influence them by appearing to be wise, learned and having a divine quest of uplifting society at large. Whether they were truly wise or just opportunists who took advantage of the common folk's curiosity and goodwill can be debated to no end and I have no inclination of doing so.

      bbababonbon..bonfire! I'll give you an advice that has worked for me for a long time: Don't expect anything from anyone so you'll never get disappointed.
      Now, it seems you're not smart enough to get the point through the example I made in my last comment, in that case i'll be more direct. You didn't accurately judge anything, what you think and I think about the video is irrelevant, you're no one to judge the old man or the video, your subjective opinion is worth nothing because its subjective, you can't accurately judge something that is based on emotions and liking.
      This doesn't mean that you cannot express your opinion because we all do and we all have the right to do, however one thing is to express your opinion like a civilized person and different thing is to bitch and cry about how you didn't like the video like a 12 years old spoiled girl, because you know, you're soooo important that if something isn't of you liking its trash, the world spins around you...
      And i'm still waiting for you to prove and recommend me a history book where hermits do all you said, considering you're a history enthusiast it shouldn't be a problem. Oh and the bible, quran and such aren't history books but fairy tales books so pass on those.

    I admire this fine fellow living on the island by himself. What made me able to admire him is his optimistic perspective on conflicts. "I see problems as an opportunity for a learning experience."
