      I heard that the DeBeers family has like 80% of the world's gem quality diamonds locked in their vaults and they decide how many to release each year to keep the price up. Sounds like a bad investment to me.

    Back in the 90's I met a guy from India who came in to where I worked , In which was the tooling industry and sold us diamonds for grinding and he told me he could get a diamond for a ring with a U.S. market value of $10,000 for only $3,000 in India but the time factor was too far for me and my wedding date , but he also said the diamond could not be brought back loose he would have to put it in a setting and he was a stellar gentleman obliged to do all at no cost other than the gem price because we were good customers for his company. I hope he is well !

    Stay away from 47st … everything moves super fast paced in the diamond district meaning you can easily end up with same piece of crap that didn’t get inspected properly

    He’s gotta go to Surat. That’s an intensely clanish and secretive business. You’ll be in some dingy factory, but there could be enough inventory stocked up there to shame apple factories. And the traders will come wearing plain cotton clothes but he’ll probably be having a penthouse facing Central Park. This is one weird industry, but somehow thrives like crazy.

    Imagine you set a price so extraordinarily high you will settle for a "lesser" value (ex: $250k sounds better than $450k). But in reality the diamond is worth a couple hundred dollars. LOL.

    Actually, you can buy that bracelet WITHOUT sales tax IF you are reselling it (say, at retail) and you use your company's tax ID number. The sales tax must be collected on the RETAIL sale and then turned in.

    Only the big stone are important and rare in diamonds and few people could afford them the smaller diamonds are very common and cost nothing in reality it’s a bad investment in general.

    What most people don´t know is that the only reason that diamonds are so costly is because the supply is controlled. Diamonds are much more abundant than the public is indoctrinated to think.

      Not true. Diamonds are expensive for two reasons: cutting and clarity. Is hard to find someone to teach you how to cut diamonds because is a very closed world. That's why the business is kept in the family, fathers teach their sons and so on. Is an exclusive market for exclusive people.

      lab grown diamond is just as real as a natural one, properties are the same.

      I paid cash for mine $5500 ish but it appraises at $24k. I’ll never advise financing a ring. Save for what you can afford. Period.

      Unlike gold, diamonds values stay flat. They are a horrible investment...

    The amount of money some people will spend on crappy diamond chip pavé that is basically polished sandpaper, just blows my mind… Tacky, gaudy, and a waste of perfectly good diamond grit that could be used for industrial applications, instead of adorning the neck of a concussed millionaire.

      If Africans were to trade diamonds almong themselves, those diamonds will be worthless. Value is generated only by trading a thing with something else.
      So although they mine diamonds but those diamonds are literally useless stones, unless someone put a value for them.
      So they can either keep their diamonds in their homes or sell them for 'some little' value.
