Thanks for sharing, I’ve been postponing my hunt because I thought I don’t have the suitable gear yet, but you made it clear now: “ go after the experience” That’s a golden advice, thank you so much
Dude this was such a breath of fresh air compared to other creators who own hunting focused companies or whatever constantly saying "You have to have this" or "you have to have that" for a successful hunt and when you add up all of their gear it's EASILY 10 grand, plus their rifle set up alone is another 6 grand. But then they'll say "well I got most of this for free" and it's like okay then who are you making this video for in the first place? Cause it sure as f*** doesn't apply to me lol. Subscribed!
That’s the truth! When we started we had all kinds of cheaper stuff and made it work! Now we do have some of the higher clothing, packs and gear but it’s been accumulated overtime
Joe ( GREAT VIDEO)you hit the nail on the head. I too am DIY OTC archer [Colorado] I have been successful 2x 5x5. People look at all the youtube hunts being done by some of the BIG name hunters on ranch. I hunt BLM land Colorado. If a hunter can and able to save up each week month for OTC Colorado tags and he/she can partner with someone ( share cost gas). My 1st year went to Colorado as NR OTC tags were $225,25 (but that was back then), now cost for NR is $725.25. This went with a friend of mine and met up with 3 others from Texas (we choose WRONG week to go-normally a good time when I took my elk) Week after Labor Day had been my go too week, but this year WAY TOO MANY Rec users riding thru area we tried to hunt. I got busted by 2 dirt bikers as I was putting on a NICE stalk on another 5x5-he didn't even know I was behind him. That was til those bikers drove up thru woods and spooked him...well that public lands. But what you are saying is very affordable, provide you prepare for the high mountains trek. Learn what calls to use and when and practice your long range shots (most bowhunter shoot for whitetail out to 40 yds ) practice longer shots and the shorts one easy.
Here in Tennessee it can be extremely expensive on guide tours or private hunting camps , usually starting at around 5500 and up but pretty much a garuntee at a so called trophy buck, however in the Upper Cumberland Elk Program ( you have to be drawn to hunt) once your chosen the cost is significantly less, best if possible to hunt out west, Tennessee elk population is currently at best 450 wild spread over five county's. Tennessee has an informative website as we know are subject to change.
The states with up and coming elk seasons are always going to be harder to hunt and harder to obtain a tag. There are plenty of options in the western states. Thanks for the info!
Good video. Good boots and a good pack are imo the most important as well. it cost me about $1600 my first time out to Colorado Elk hunting OTC, public land DIY. One thing to add is to have about $120 to $175 extra for dry ice if you happen to harvest an elk.
Thank you for the breakdown! I will be a first time elk hunter come October! I’m very excited just for the experience and a chance to spend time with my brothers! Great information
Great video! I have been planning an elk hunt and each year I have bought more things. Unfortunately, there has always been something that has come up. Well, five years later I am finally able to go to Colorado this September. Because I have slowly been buying the gear I'll need o er the past five years, I have everything and like you said I will only have to spend about 1200 for the hunt and to get out there! Also, because I have slowly been buying these things I made the splurges and got good boots and pack! Take your time and fine tune the gear over the years and it won't be such a shock to your wallet.
elk has been a bucket list for me for decades. ive been buying gear for a elk hunt for years and finally got everything i need to do a elk hunt. ive spent over 5000 dollars on gear and will probably spend another 2000 for tags and gas getting to a elk hunting state. its not a cheap hunt like whitetail.
I go every year for about $1200. Fuel prices are probably going to set me back about another $200 this year. If you are already a whitetail hunter, there’s a good chance you already have everything. Find a buddy or two and go! I wish I would have known how affordable it was sooner. Randy Newberg is who showed me it was doable.
you should list all of your gear or gear that compares on the cheaper end that you use in your description with links! This would be super helpful! I am wanting to go for the first time next year!

You are welcome! That was the point!

As someone who fantasizes about Elk hunting, thank you for the break down on what seems decently affordable which is contrary to what I heard.
It costs way more to go to the beach! Glad it could help, this was the intent of the video!

Thank you for doing this breakdown. As a fellow blue collar worker with dreams of hunting elk this gives me some hope
It should! You can do it relatively inexpensively and just accumulate better gear over time!

Those two are very important and extra money is always a good thing on any vacation!
Thank you for the breakdown!

Great video bud. I learned a lot.
Glad we could help!!! Thanks for watching
Great video. Lets go hunting man!colorado otc 9/10/24
I have to be very honest, I have hunted Colorado enough times to say I’ll never hunt there again unless it’s a private ranch hahaha
you should list all of your gear or gear that compares on the cheaper end that you use in your description with links! This would be super helpful! I am wanting to go for the first time next year!
We will keep that in mind, it’s likely we make an updated video of this in the future! Thanks for watching!
How much would it be with an outfitter? Probably more than 2500 I assume.
Yes, it’s significantly more money. This video focuses primarily on DIY public land hunts
@@HuntFishShootChannel thank you..very very good information especially for a novice like myself thank you
5k to 7k for a elk hunt with a outfitter plus gear, permits, fees and tag.
Around 8500
I only wish. I can't do it 😭 financially or physically 😭.
Sorry to hear that! If you ever can, do it! It’s a lifetime experience.
ur paying 10 thousand for 10 thousand dollar elk private land on a farm beautiful racks
Not sure what this has to do with the video or the premise behind it.
