I am going Elk hunting for the first time ever this year. Hell or high water I will be there. Thank you for providing such great content while inspiring others.
@Bthorn 50 Haha I pulled an Elk tag in Arizona for literally the worst Elk unit in the country. I didn't know if at the time. I couldn't even hire a guide because no one wanted to take the job in that unit. Turns out there is alot of cattle ranchers who lease the public land and they have free reign to kill the Elk that encroaches on their water supply. Needless to say, there was no Elk. Thanks for asking. This Eastern Boy is going to have to rethink my strategy.
Randy.... my friend.. this is great info. A video on Mule deer and other species w/ same exact format would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for sharing your wisdom and knowledge.
Watching this video, it really makes me feel grateful to live in Colorado already and can take advantage of the resident prices and living 2.5 hours away from my hunting spots.
I live in GA. I'm out of 2000 before I leave my front yard and there is no way around it. I've eaten a couple of 700 dollar colorado tags. The air fair alone is about 800. He's talking tags mainly not all of the other costs associated.
RANDY, Let's see this with the updated costs of tags/fees and new regs for Colorado non-reisdent OTC for 2025. I'd love to see how you would plan that out. Thanks.
I absolutely love these price break downs. Will you please do a similar video on mule deer and antelope. Having a young family, budget is critical especially when taking along children for there first out west hunt. I love the videos.
Thanks for the great breakdown and possible strategy for applying to elk hunt in the west. Really helpful for those of us who are from the East and might only get one big western hunt a year and is on a tight budget where we can’t carpet bomb 💣 the west with applications. I like how you explained the timing of the draws and possible refunds of our well earned and saved money. Plus also building points for future hunts in the process. I pretty much have 1-3 points in every state for elk outside of the west coast states. I did screw up in Wyoming because I saw the $1200 special draw price and said that I can’t afford that. But after seeing the regular price of $770 or so I bought a point last year. I have 3 points for deer 🦌 and pronghorn in Wyoming and should have the same for elk if not for my misunderstanding. I have 3 elk points in Colorado and hope to do a 1st rifle hunt like you did in 2020. Thank you again Randy.
Lol, if your hunting Alaska, you’re good. Elk are nothing compared to caribou, moose, etc. I live in New Mexico, hunting elk isn’t exciting, I’d rather do caribou or moose. I guess where you are determines what is a dream hunt. To me it’s caribou and moose, but for someone who lives in Alaska, I guess elk might be their dream hunt.
@peterweikel7123 I keep telling my wife $24k to hunt coastal browns, or we can start a new life in Alaska with fresh salmon, great views, and fun hunts...we still live in texas....
Very will thought out strategy. You are spot on about Idaho, this year was a disaster for me and my group. None of us got close to getting NR tags. A 75 and developing health issues, I don't know how much time I have left on buying points, but your strategy is really logical and very affordable. Thanks so much for the heads up, I need to get busy and start some applications. I want to make the most of what time I have left. Thank You.
Randy! - always watching your vids! I am curious how you stay active and in shape in the office season. I know you mentioned you were/are and accountant. Being in shape can make or break a hunt, some info on your method year after year would be awesome!
He said in many episodes that all he does is hike. You can hit the gym and run miles on end all you want, but nothing beats putting weight on your back and hiking.
Mr Newberg thanks for the easy to follow system, going into the Wyoming special elk draw with 11 points this year, and you are correct anyone who is serious about elk hunting needs to build points.
Morning Randy, great info as usual. Colorado upped their price this year to $701 (rounded up) as of their fee schedule for bulls released last Friday. Still a viable option no matter what. Looking forward to 2022 season.
Great content. Just remember that this is only half the equation. Gotta factor is transportation (fly or drive), lodging, food etc. This could easily make that $100.00/month turn into $200.00+/month budget.
@HILLJACK is it worth it? I never have hunted there. I seen some say it is over run due to popularity. Based on this break down time is more of my constraint.
I’m from California. Never hunted before but I’m planning on this year. I want to hunt Idaho OTC but think Oregons OTC will be a litter cheaper for me and it’s a closer drive
Awesome video and thank you sharing a great strategy to get a tag and go elk hunting. Now I just have to save up for the travel expenses. Too bad Idaho is difficult, I have family there which would help with travel expenses.
KY is worth looking at, too. No points, and it's basically a once in a lifetime hunt, but it only costs $10 for an entry into any one of their three seasons.
Good stuff; wish we could upload excel on you tube. I was lucky enough to get a Idaho tag and it was just about every bit of this budget. However, because they don't allow group applications in the OTC sale period and they randomly assign customer que numbers; I had to choose the unit carefully so that we all could hunt in the same area. My number was in the low 3,000s in the customer que (supper lucky), and my hunting buddy was in the 21,000 + (not so lucky), in the que. I got an elk tag and he got a deer tag in a unit with overlapping seasons. My buddy's adult son came in late so he knew he wouldn't get a tag is going to come along as a non-hunter. If I picked a different unit that sold out more quickly, I don't think that we would be hunting together this year at all.
As always, Thanks for the video Randy and crew! 😀👍 I know there is a plethora of variables that go into an out of state hunt, but how about an "OOS budget" video to show a breakdown of costs associated with an out of state hunt (gear, food, housing, gas, etc..) that'll kind of paint the picture of how much to save on top of the $1200 budget?
That is so variable. I always tell folks that they can likely use whatever they use for deer and do just fine, so equipment shouldn't be a huge investment. Sharing travel costs with friends, bringing pre-cooked meals from home, and doing your own game processing are other ways to lower the cost substantially. I am sure it can be done, including tags and license, for less than $1,800 per person, even with higher gas costs.
@@Fresh_Tracks Awesome! $1,800 is about what I was thinking as well. I always do my own processing (Thanks in large part to your videos on gutless field dressing) and try to bring as much homemade food as possible to further reduce my expenses. I appreciate the reply and Happy New Year!!
Dear Randy just watch this show on how to hunt elk on a budget I am interested in cow elk tags what's the best place to apply for a rifle hunt do-it-yourself
Love these videos guys. Have you thought about doing a video like this, but with a theme of which state makes the most sense if you are moving out west? It can't be Wyoming though, we're full.
Thanks Randy. Your hunting video are great. They make me feel I'm on the hunt with you. There's a lot to learn about big game hunts. I've been fortunate to hunt white tail deer in Pennsylvania. Hopefully, I'll make it out west (to hunt Elk) some day. Thanks again!
I know the AZ stuff but it depends how serious you are about it. Like if you get drawn do you have the cash to travel and have the time off for the hunt? Obviously I don't know your situation but they are considerations.
Thanks for the video! I was successful after drawing an archery Elk tag here in Kentucky and now I'm hooked. As a broke college kid, what states should I invest my points in to give me the most bang-for-my-buck later on down the line? Thanks again.
As others have said, you will have pinpoint locations on specific states you wish to hunt. Every state has its own hunting specific regulations. Some States also have over the counter tags so if you don't win a draw you can always find a State with over the counter.
Randy, love all of your content, however I think there's a glitch with this particular planning method if you're looking at putting in for the Colorado draw. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the money you need to front for New Mexico won't be returned until after the NM draw, which occurs late April. However, to apply in Colorado, you need to put that money up at the CO application deadline, which is usually within the first week of April. So it's not exactly like you'll have your money back in time if you were truly relying on just that rolling budget. Unless I'm missing something?
So this can all be done online? What about an “OTC” Colorado archery elk tag which you put in July, assuming that’s when tags begin, would I need to drive TO Colorado?
What happens if you draw 2 or 3 of the tags? LOL.... it IS possible, no probable, but then you're screwed unless you really have the time and money to do them. Also I still don't get why you left WY out of the mix, would that put you WAY over the $1200 limit? Really great info though.
Wyoming keeps all of your application money, until the draw is completed. Therefore your budget is gone before you can apply for Colorado or Montana. That and it takes about three to four points to draw in Wyoming.
Randy you got sound wisdom here thank you. How do sweepstake prizes work and how does a commissioners tag work in like Wyoming i think it is? I'm curious to know?
Lot of the costs are one time. Minus licenses or fees. Get yourself a good 30.06 with scope, decent boots, shirt, pants. And a skinning knife and an old cooler your in business.
Hey Randy, I noticed that with this video as well as your "Best Value" video, you didn't include the OTC elk tags for Western Oregon. Is that because you just don't have a lot of experience in Western Oregon hunting for Rosies, focusing on Rocky Mtn elk only, or some other reasons? Western Oregon has tons of public land for hunting, and it has it's own challenges, but there are some quality bulls out there. There's also OTC fall bear & mountain lion for less than $20 each for a nonresident. Regardless, super appreciate this video as with a large family I am on a budget, and saving $100/month is doable, thanks!
Biggest reason is most the audience would be driving through Idaho and Wyoming/Colorado to get there. Given travel is a huge cost and logistic complication, it is hard for folks to justify traveling to western OR for an elk and while passing through so many other great elk locations. Hope that helps.
@@Fresh_Tracks Naw that makes perfect sense, and definitely fits the the 'best value' goal you had. I know you talk to the Born and Raised guys and Corey's hunted western OR Rosies, didn't think you'd forgotten about OR & WA OTC stuff. Appreciate the reply, and again, always appreciate your content and info! Thanks.
I could swing the 1200.00. However if I draw then I need a truck that can get me in and out of the back country. I live on the east coast and hunt deer with a 30-30. So, gonna need a different rifle. So really the only option for me is continue to make my annual donation to the state of Kentucky and cross my fingers. Thanks for all of your content! I at least can hunt elk vicariously.
Folks kill elk with bows and muzzleloaders. Yes, out west you have opportunities to shoot 400-500 yards ethically. But, that doesn't mean you have to; in many places you don't have those long shots.
In CO, if you apply for LE & draw a tag, can you decline the tag or do they automatically withdraw the full price of the elk tag? When is the deadline after results are announced to make full payment?
Great video condensing a lot of info down, but The spreadsheet shows the tag fee at 15$ but what I see online at AZ game/fish is 600$? Am I looking at something wrong?
Nuther great video. Not sure why those states are so stingy with the Non Res Tags. Not like those out of state hunters aren't going to spend a lot of $$$$
For years I thought Wyoming was like Colorado where if you don't draw you get a point. So I thought I was building points, only to find out I should have been buying the point in July. Wasted 3 years because of my assumption.
I had the same thought 🤔 I definitely couldn't drive their and back and eat plus have a little extra for unknown situations likely less than 1400 in fuel from Arkansas and back. I would plan to hunt for two weeks and that could be close to 500. Extras???? Hopefully not but gotta have the extra just in case!
We've done that before. Maybe we should refresh and update it for current costs. Under $1,800 if planned properly and not looked at as an expensive vacation.
Thanks Randy for doing this, but I do have a question. Whats the best way to do the $1200 is better to have a sperate checking account using a debit card or credit card? The reason I ask I don't want my credit card carrying a balance month to month .
Either checking account of credit card. Debit cards are bad news. Just pay off the balance each month with the money you have set aside for this purpose.
Wait, if you buy an OTC tag for Colorado, you only need the habitat stamp which is only $10.40 dollars and the elk tag at 688.. I think you misspoke about that
I am going Elk hunting for the first time ever this year. Hell or high water I will be there.

I definitely couldn't drive their and back and eat plus have a little extra for unknown situations likely less than 1400 in fuel from Arkansas and back.
I would plan to hunt for two weeks and that could be close to 500.
Extras???? Hopefully not but gotta have the extra just in case!
We've done that before. Maybe we should refresh and update it for current costs. Under $1,800 if planned properly and not looked at as an expensive vacation.
Best budget 'tip' is to have about 15 buddies come with to divvie up food and gas costs!
You're telling me no more beer🤔
Thanks Randy for doing this, but I do have a question. Whats the best way to do the $1200 is better to have a sperate checking account using a debit card or credit card? The reason I ask I don't want my credit card carrying a balance month to month .
Either checking account of credit card. Debit cards are bad news. Just pay off the balance each month with the money you have set aside for this purpose.
Colorado is nice, don’t pay unless you draw.
Wait, if you buy an OTC tag for Colorado, you only need the habitat stamp which is only $10.40 dollars and the elk tag at 688.. I think you misspoke about that
Hmm. As far as I know, you must still buy a license. I could be wrong, but that is how I have done it when I bought an elk tag there.
Wish I could buy a point in Wyoming but I'm the resident. So over the counter for me.
