Hey @ED4T.. quick question, I'm on the 64 gig model of the steam deck, and no matter what I do, I don't have enough storage to install the apu driver. Any tips? Also amazing vid, only one that worked. Edit: I have a 256 gig sd card in it that's been split between the 2 OS.
My brother, I say the word honesty. You are creative and I like the person who explains the details and the correct order. You are creative in the full sense of the word. We wish you success.❤❤❤❤
Sir, you are completly right about the loading problems when installing and running Windows directly from a SD card. I had the same problems, but in-game, things taking too much time to load and when not gaming the disk usage (in the task manager) was always at 100%.
For those who made the same mistake I did, if you get to the installing Windows stage and the installer exits saying "Windows cannot identify some drives on this device" it's because the micro SD card is still in the Steam Deck and Windows cannot identify those until you've installed drivers. Edit: The solution to this is you just remove the micro SD card. If you follow this tutorial there's nothing on the card required for Windows installation. So you remove it, install Windows, download the Steam Deck drivers for Windows which includes one for the SD card reader, then you can insert the micro SD and use it for SteamOS and/or Windows.
My guess is to install windows with a USB? Then, put ur SD card in with drivers that has both the drivers and windows installed? My issue is I have a sd card, I put windows on it and it asks for a product code.

Hello Ed, Can you please explain why when selecting Drive 0 Partition 9, although it shows same gb size as shown in your video, whenever I get to downloading the Drivers, I start getting "not enough disk space" message. Any thoughts? As of the writing of this message to you, I am starting the whole process over again. Everything up until the driver installation has gone perfectly as shown in your video. Thank you!
sorry for late reply. so you have complete the windows installation but when you install valve's windows driver it said not enough disk space ? just wondering which driver it gives your this error msg? also are you installing tiny windows 11 or regular windows 11?
@ Ed, Thanks for valuable reply. I believe the problem is when I set up my WiFi. FYI - I did download & installed Tiny 11 22H2 Beta1 successfully. But I noticed, after your step in turning on my WiFi, suddenly there were some downloads of Windows updates. Cannot understand why this happens, especially when UPDATES shown as "pause for 1 week". I then notice my (C) Local Drive is RED and now with only 414MB! I also noticed, and I think this is where to problem originates -- I did not see the Secure Digital storage device. So I then pulled out my SD card and reladed it & then the SD card suddenly appears on "This PC". Does the SD card need to be shown in "This PC" as well? I am now totally confused since everything up until I was ready to install the drivers went perfectly. But obviously, no point in moving forward. Any thoughts?? Can I backtrack in order to correct this problem, or do I need to start again. Unfortunately, I need to have some idea as to why, the darn updates appear to start downloading into my Local Disk (C): for no good reason. HELP PLEASE!!! I really play much PC games so I will use for that purpose. I'll see what happens but I really love your tutorials & look forward to see your future videos. Thanks again, as always!
Very limited on space trying to get this to work. 20GB (with 27GB for SteamOS using 4GB swap and 7GB free) was not enough for the Windows partition even with Tiny11 (ran out space trying to do a Windows update). 24GB may have been enough, but that would have left 3GB for SteamOS or would have had to reduce swap back down to 1GB.
Hi, thx for this tutorial. I do every thing and work very well but now I think that when I need a more space on system partition and less space on SD card can I change that after everything? I need to use gparted? It is possible and how. 😅
to bypass the error i used a "bootleg"(not quite sure if thats the correct term) ver. of windows using only the steamOS and then proceeded to install actual windows using rufus on that "bootleg" ver.
Hi I have 2 questions. I have a 2TB SSD and 500gb of it is full of steam OS games do I need to reimage steam OS to dual boot or can I just resize 1TB of the drive to windows without deleting my games on steam OS. Also if I want to install the games on the ssd so I should skip the micro sd card step right ?
You dont need to re-image steam deck. just resize 1TB drive to windows. no need to delete any games from your Steam OS. yes if you dont want to use sd card for games you should skip the SD card step. you are correct.
heyy buddy, i did all of the steps, from Boot section, one of the option i got is LastOS, i never installed that, do you think it's there because of the commands??
you mentioned partitioning the sd card for windows and steamos, How do I make SteamOS detect the partition we created for it? I gave steam an extra 80gb from my sdcard but idk how to use that space.
I have the same question. In the video, we could see that SteamOS didn't detect the SD ext4 partition in Game Mode, only in Desktop Mode. I wonder if the solution is to have 2 SD cards, one for each system.
@@stpp47 not really. The ext4 partition wasn’t seen by either system, but the other was seen by both and shared. For this reason, no real benefit in splitting the sd card
You have to install dual boot menu otherwise it will boot into windows by default. You can hold volume - plus power button manually select steam os to boot into steam os if you don’t want to install dual boot menu.
Hey man so lets say i did the double boot but now i dont want to double boot anymore and i want to make windows take 64 gb of my steam deck, do i have to redo everything or what do i do
sorry for late reply. you can use the exfat format sd card to transfer files between Steam OS and Windows. I showed to format the SD to exfat & ext4 in this video.
Important question PLZ answer! Can I use two different micro SD cards for games? Like one of the micro sd cards partitioned with games in it from both OS and one that’s not partitioned that I will only use for steam OS? I plan to take off the micro sd card depending on which games I wanna play. Will that work?
Great, but how if i wanna turn back internal normally full size without partition? i mean, if i before use this method, and sometime i wanna sell my steamdeck, i need to recover the internal storage, and how to take back the normal storage without partition? Thank you
hi i’ve had windows for a bit now and now i want to get rid of it i’ve done some reasearch and i think i just need to delete the partition i created for windows and it will delete all the data and delete windows on the boot menu but what do you think
Not sure if someone is facing the same issue, but I did these steps, but at some point my dock was not being recognized anymore, not for hdmi ou, not for usb ports, and not even for charging. I've read people with the same problem, but no clear solution. Any ideas? Thank you for the guide!
@@ED4T thanks for the reply. It stopped working on both. Even turned off, it would not charge. It's a third party dock, but a good one (at least from what I read). It was working and after reimaging the deck and partitioning, at some point it just stopped, probably after using gParted - I did boot on that through the dock's usb. I read about people having that problem with any dock, including official one, and valve recommends putting the deck on shipping mode ("battery off" mode) and then back into plug, should work. I did that. And nothing on the dock. Tested another, though (genki covert dock), and it worked for both charging and HDMI out. So I guess the dock really died, not sure why. I even could ask for a refund, so all good I guess. Thanks again!
@@ED4T Actually I forgot to mention. Before trying Genki Dock, I tested an USB hub and it also worked. But yeah, no problem, and thanks for the guide, it was really helpful!
@@ED4Tthanks for the quick reply Also one more question if I may. My sd card is ext4 formatted on the steam deck. It does not show up on my pc is that still okay as I will be using a usb
I have installed Windows 11 on an external ssd but it only boots via the usbc port of the steam deck. If the docking station is connected and I connect the ssd as a usb, it can't be booted, how can I change that?
I know it's a noob question but I'm curious is it possible to go to SteamOS or Return to Gaming Mode while in Windows 11 desktop without shutting down the deck and booting up again?
Thanks for your tutorial, its helpful ..one question, my sd internal space 1tb, i dont want to use sd card for game , so repartion step just skip the sd card? Just resize the partition for windows let say 100gb, set it format to ntfs ,can the ntfs share for gaming part too? Or i still need to resize another partition from main linux, then set format to exfat for windows game..Please advise😊
Thanks. If you don’t want SD card for gaming yes you can skip the SD card partition step. The windows ntfs partition cannot be accessed from Steam OS. If you want have one partition shared between steam os and windows then you have to create another exfat partition just like you said.
Thanks for your reply😊😊 , is it necessary to create exfat for sharing between win / steamOS? Steamos game everything will be in orginal partition..for windows 11 game everthing in ntfs partition, if want to play win11 game, i can just switch between both steamos / win11 right…Sorry im new , sorry for noob question 😊
Hi @ED4T I got an error when trying to create the NTFS partition. It says : Failed to execute child process "mkntfs" (Input/output error). The only things I couldn't do exactly like you is when creating the iso file on Rufus. Gparted is currently in version 1.5.0-6 and I had a waring about 2 files that were missing and should been downloaded. Any idea ?
Try this: There was a SteamOS update and it wiped all my boot entries! This happens even if not using dualboot / Clover / rEFInd. 1. Shutdown the Steam Deck. While powered OFF, press VOLUP + POWER. 2. Go to Boot from File > efi > steamos > steamcl.efi 3. Script will automatically fix the dual boot entries! Reboot and it will go back to Clover!
@@ED4T I didn't expect such a quick answer on an old video but thanks for the help bro! after resetting it would give me the dual boot options but even when I chose SteamOS it would still boot Windows. Hey I have a question, with this tutorial I made a dualboot but make only 30gb for windows and install normal version is working but I don't have free space can I reinstall it and dual boot will be still working? Please help😢
Question: I recently mess up my tiny windows files. Is there a way to reinstall it using your method? Will it compromise my existing files that I have on my steam deck and windows? My dual boot is working fine and I hope I do not have to do the entire setup process again. Any comment is greatly appreciated! Thank you!!
you don't have to redo the entire process. you can just reinstall windows. after Windows is reinstalled. after you reinstalled Windows and now it boots directly to Windows instead of Clover! this is how to fix it: 1. Shutdown the Steam Deck. While powered OFF, press VOLDOWN + POWER and select SteamOS from the list. 2. Script will automatically fix the dual boot entries! Reboot and it will go back to Clover!
Do I have to remove the sd card when I do all this? Also it is formatted by steamos, if I want to use it only for windows I can make it only ntfs partition?
What do i do after i get a new ssd for my deck planning to upgrade later on when i can, do i have to do everything again and what was the point of doing the sd card?
Followed the tutorial and divided my micro sd into exfat and ext4. I see the division in steamOs in desktop mode but don't know how i can install something to it. Help 😢
Hey! I followed this method and it worked fine but I am trying to redo it because I wanted to install tiny windows11 instead of the whole thing. The setup window shows the partition to install windows is full. What should I do to resolve this? I tried to format the partition and it didn't work, still shows the drive full eventhough there's nothing on it. It's fresh partition from gparted. Please help!
2 questions If I decide I want to revert to my default steam deck OS like how I got it brand new what should I have to do? Also does my steam deck have to be factory reset first before I start this process
1. You have to re-image your steam deck if you want to revert back to the factory steam deck you got it brand new. Here is the video how to re-image steam deck th-cam.com/video/6vFmOf4V6O4/w-d-xo.html 2 you don’t need to factory reset before you doing this dual boot process.
HELP! when running gparted on the steam deck i get the cd image screen then some text saying end kernal panic : not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) any ideas wizards?
Hey guys, I just upgraded my deck to 2tb storage and planning to dual boot windows. Was wondering is it possible to shrink 2 extra partitions 1 is for windows (60GB) another 1 is for storage (1TB exFAT). The reason why is because exFAT can be shared for both Windows and SteamOS. Have anyone tried it before?
Quick question: When Windows first installed from me from the “This PC” screen I do not see my SD card like you did, any idea how to fix? I followed the guide exactly
Hi, Can I make my micro SD as Windows 11 booter to install it in the internal space of the steam deck and then format the micro SD to install my games?
Hello, I have a problem - in the boot manager I ONLY have a partition for Windows, and there is no partition for Steam OS. you can see it normally in gparted, but not in the boot manager. I hope you can help me with this
try this: Start with Steam Deck off. Hold Volume + button and power. Choose "Boot from file". Select esp/efi/steamos/steamcl.efi. Wait until SteamOS boots (there will be a blank screen for some time, but Steam should start after that). Go to desktop mode. Open Konsole. EDIT: if you never used sudo then type passwd and press Enter. Then set up your password that you will have to use whenever you run sudo. Run following command: sudo efibootmgr -c -L "SteamOS" -l "\EFI\steamos\steamcl.efi" -d /dev/nvme0n1p1 This will add a boot menu option for SteamOS. EDIT: If you're typing the command by hand, 2 remarks: it is one line command (in mobile apps it might be seen as multiple lines) the third flag, between "SteamOS" and "\EFI... is a dash and lowercase L (it might look like number one or uppercase i)
Do you know why on my pc, when i try to go to the settings menu, it just shows blue screen? It doesn’t load the menu at all! Also, saved this for future use. Thanks!

Hi, thx for this tutorial. I do every thing and work very well but now I think that when I need a more space on system partition and less space on SD card can I change that after everything? I need to use gparted? It is possible and how. 😅
When I go to install windows I get an error which says I'm missing some kind of driver. Has anyone else experienced this, or have a solution?
same
@@toastbrot236 if you didnt fix this error its becuase you have to use rufus
to bypass the error i used a "bootleg"(not quite sure if thats the correct term) ver. of windows using only the steamOS and then proceeded to install actual windows using rufus on that "bootleg" ver.
Hi @ED4T I have a question, which is more performant in steam deck, windows 10 or windows 11?
I would say almost same. Win10 has better compatibility than 11 for old games. But win 11 is easier to use with touch screen.
you mentioned partitioning the sd card for windows and steamos, How do I make SteamOS detect the partition we created for it? I gave steam an extra 80gb from my sdcard but idk how to use that space.
I have the same question. In the video, we could see that SteamOS didn't detect the SD ext4 partition in Game Mode, only in Desktop Mode. I wonder if the solution is to have 2 SD cards, one for each system.
Someone of u 2 found an answer/solution?
@@stpp47 not really. The ext4 partition wasn’t seen by either system, but the other was seen by both and shared. For this reason, no real benefit in splitting the sd card
I need help I did this and when I try to go back to my steam deck mode there's no os for it just the windows
You have to install dual boot menu otherwise it will boot into windows by default. You can hold volume - plus power button manually select steam os to boot into steam os if you don’t want to install dual boot menu.
i got "BOOT FAILED!" at 7:04 location in your video
This work for Windows 10 to ? I have 256 internal storage so no problem with partitions ... thx
Yes this will work with win10 as well. Steps are same
Im selecting xbox 360 controller but it never selects just stays on desktop
Send help. Desktop does not show the clover app to setup the dual boot. :(
Hey man so lets say i did the double boot but now i dont want to double boot anymore and i want to make windows take 64 gb of my steam deck, do i have to redo everything or what do i do
If you want to get rid of the windows completely then you need to re-image your steam deck. Yes that means you have to redo everything.
Hi thx for sharing. One question : is there an interaction between the partition and cryoUtilities ?
None, i dont so think so. cryoutlitles stuff are all belongs to linux partition.
Dear Sir. How can I transfer data back and forth between 2 operating systems? Thank you.
sorry for late reply. you can use the exfat format sd card to transfer files between Steam OS and Windows. I showed to format the SD to exfat & ext4 in this video.
will windows 10 work instead of tiny 11 (I don't know if tiny11 is safe that's why)
It will work with any windows 10 or 11.
on the 64gb?@@ED4T
nvm I tried it with win10 and gave the windows a lil bit more storage and it worked TY
Important question PLZ answer!
Can I use two different micro SD cards for games? Like one of the micro sd cards partitioned with games in it from both OS and one that’s not partitioned that I will only use for steam OS? I plan to take off the micro sd card depending on which games I wanna play. Will that work?
yeah that will work. just make sure you remember which game is installed in which sd card lol..
You’re the greatest man, thank you🔥🔥🔥
No problem 👍
Is it possible to dual boot without using the SD card partitioning step? So, have 2 ssd partitions be bootable, 1 for windows and 1 for steam os?
Yes the sd card is just for extra space. It’s an optional stuff.
@@ED4T Ty for the answer and for the very thorough instructions in your video!
Great, but how if i wanna turn back internal normally full size without partition?
i mean, if i before use this method, and sometime i wanna sell my steamdeck, i need to recover the internal storage, and how to take back the normal storage without partition?
Thank you
Would this same process work for Tiny 10? And if not you should do a video for it
Yes it will work for tiny win10 as well same process.
hi i’ve had windows for a bit now and now i want to get rid of it i’ve done some reasearch and i think i just need to delete the partition i created for windows and it will delete all the data and delete windows on the boot menu but what do you think
yes, you are right. you just need to delete the windows partition & remove the dualboot option.
Not sure if someone is facing the same issue, but I did these steps, but at some point my dock was not being recognized anymore, not for hdmi ou, not for usb ports, and not even for charging. I've read people with the same problem, but no clear solution. Any ideas? Thank you for the guide!
Are you talking about the dock stopped working in Steam OS or Both Steam os & Windows ?
@eduardopinho2644 thanks for sharing your whole story here. Maybe try with a usb hub see if that works or not. It doesn’t need to be a dock.
@@ED4T Actually I forgot to mention. Before trying Genki Dock, I tested an USB hub and it also worked. But yeah, no problem, and thanks for the guide, it was really helpful!
Hello do you really need a sd card, What if i dont want to dual boot and just have windows permanently?
Sd card is just an optional. You can skip the sd card session if you won’t want to use sd card
@@ED4TWah so fast
This might be a silly question but will this work on my oled 512gb version
yes it will, LCD and OLED steam deck use same setup process.
@@ED4Tthanks for the quick reply
Also one more question if I may. My sd card is ext4 formatted on the steam deck. It does not show up on my pc is that still okay as I will be using a usb
What is more reliable: Steam Deck tools or Handheld Companion?
steam deck tool.
@@ED4T Thanks!
I have installed Windows 11 on an external ssd but it only boots via the usbc port of the steam deck. If the docking station is connected and I connect the ssd as a usb, it can't be booted, how can I change that?
thats sounds not correct. is it an official steam deck dock ?

When I went to the boot menu to go back to steamIOS it was no longer there. Just the windows and the D and E drives
have you installed dualboot menu ?
I know it's a noob question but I'm curious is it possible to go to SteamOS or Return to Gaming Mode while in Windows 11 desktop without shutting down the deck and booting up again?
That will be magical. It’s impossible right now.
@@ED4T ok thank you I was hoping there's a secret way to do it 🤣

it only show 1 option to me in gparted why
Yes , It’s not necessary. Sometime it is just easer for transferring file between two OS. But you can also do it with usb flash drive.
Hi.. Question can i used a different sd card to play a game coz i hve 2 different 512gb sd cards
would this work the same way with a tiny windows 10?
yes it will. this works with Windows 10 & Windows 11 any version.
Windows 11 or Windows 10, what is better for Deck? It seems Windows 11 can't play EA games (Fifa 23).
Windows 11 is better at touch feature. just remember Windows 10 will reach end of support on October 14, 2025
Any idea ?
nvm, I did it again from the beginning and this time no error on rufus, no error on gparted
sorry for the late reply. glad it worked now.
well.. the new SteamOS update just got rid of my SteamOS partition. now my deck ONLY boots in Windows. any idea on how to fix this?
Try this:
There was a SteamOS update and it wiped all my boot entries!
This happens even if not using dualboot / Clover / rEFInd.
1. Shutdown the Steam Deck. While powered OFF, press VOLUP + POWER.
2. Go to Boot from File > efi > steamos > steamcl.efi
3. Script will automatically fix the dual boot entries! Reboot and it will go back to Clover!
@@ED4T I didn't expect such a quick answer on an old video but thanks for the help bro! after resetting it would give me the dual boot options but even when I chose SteamOS it would still boot Windows. I redid what you said, went on desktop mode, opened SteamDeck_rEFind and reinstalled the config and now it works. you deserve more subs dude! wish you the best
Thank you!!
you don't have to redo the entire process. you can just reinstall windows.
after Windows is reinstalled.
after you reinstalled Windows and now it boots directly to Windows instead of Clover!
this is how to fix it:
1. Shutdown the Steam Deck. While powered OFF, press VOLDOWN + POWER and select SteamOS from the list.
2. Script will automatically fix the dual boot entries! Reboot and it will go back to Clover!

Hey guys, I just upgraded my deck to 2tb storage and planning to dual boot windows. Hello, I have a problem - in the boot manager I ONLY have a partition for Windows, and there is no partition for Steam OS. you can see it normally in gparted, but not in the boot manager. I hope you can help me with this
try this:
Start with Steam Deck off.
Run following command:
sudo efibootmgr -c -L "SteamOS" -l "\EFI\steamos\steamcl.efi" -d /dev/nvme0n1p1
This will add a boot menu option for SteamOS.
EDIT: If you're typing the command by hand, 2 remarks:
it is one line command (in mobile apps it might be seen as multiple lines)
the third flag, between "SteamOS" and "\EFI... is a dash and lowercase L (it might look like number one or uppercase i)
i can go to the Steam OS, but it didn’t show in the boot loader.
Do you know why on my pc, when i try to go to the settings menu, it just shows blue screen? It doesn’t load the menu at all!
Also, saved this for future use. Thanks!
