Just to add something i had trouble with. After installing windows, to get back to SteamOS, you need to get to bios and select bootmanager and select SteamOS. If steamOS doesnt appear in the list than, in the BIOS, select boot from file and select esp/efi/steamos/steamcl.efi. and steamOS will start. Thx for the tutorial.
Thank you for this, I was like wait a minute how do I get back to steam deck OS 🤣
I didn’t work
Thank you Hero
Heeey you found me :) GRACIAS
LifeSaver!!!!!
I only have windows installed( not the double booth program). How do I get back to SteamOS? And if I do does it mean I have to windows all the way again if I want to go back?
This is my second time using this tutorial (First time after upgrading the SSD) and I would like to offer a huge thank you for this... Kudos
Thanks. And you are welcome
Took me a while but thanks to you i now have set it up properly. This is the best guide i have found so far!
Glad it helped!
YET ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO, it wasnt long at all cause you showed everything we needed for a smooth process! Thank you so much for the instructions, worked like a charm.
Thanks bro. Glad everything worked out for you.
Best video I've seen. I had watched a few prior to getting an upgraded HD, glad I found this when looking for the most recent videos on the subject. You went very in depth, thank you.
You're welcome. Thank you for the kind words and for watching. Glad it helped
I actually stumbled on your video when I was looking for ways to dual boot windows I tried using various methods but to no avail or make the process seem to much of a chore. Despite the video being super long but it was worth it every step of the way is easy to do and guess what everything works as shown for that you get a sub.
Awesome! Thanks
Dude you explained things that I already know and make me see them in a different angle. Thank you, today I learned a couple of things
Glad to help
The best out there, hands down. GREAT detail!!! Thanks!!!
This was very easy to follow. Only gripe was you didn't show how to reboot back to steamOS without Clover (You can do so by pressing vol. down and power as usual and then selecting the steamOS drive).
Great tutorials. While I’m sure I just need to play around with them, the hot keys section was confusing due to the speed you were going. I still need to do the FPS etc part but I did everything else and I’m so happy. Thank you!
Awesome! Glad it's working for you and thanks!
Thank you very very much : THIS helps a lot to bring Windows to the new SSD instead of using the slowdown Windows-SD . Glad you are here !
Awesome! Glad it helped
Did step by step ,everything working for me , thanks man for the turtorial !! :)
Awesome! Glad everything worked out.
Followed this guide from start to finish and it was so helpful. Thank you Overkill! Subscribed and liked.
Glad it helped!
Oh man this video deserves 1MM views, holy crap, what a great tutorial. Very well structured, with pointers to other videos where more details are needed for some of these pieces. Super helpful!
Awesome! Glad we could help.
1 millimeter views?
milliony million@@makeitthrough_
Great tutorial still today. Everything went smoothly and thank you much!
Of course I liked and subscribed. I don't know if it's the music, the tutorial itself or a combination of both...but this video made a brotha cry. You're the man bro. Much respect to you.
Yo, you got me dyin over here. You said it made a brotha cry. Appreciate the like and the sub. Welcome to the family!
@@OVERKILLGAMING786 Bro you don't even understand lol. This video made me cop the OLED. I'm weak..
I appreciate this very much. I got everything set up. Now im just trying to figure out how the hell to change the boot theme background. Thank you!
What a superb guide, you got yourself a subscriber!😄
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you, my steam deck arrived 3 days ago and now i switched to revi OS and part with handheld companion setup helped me a lot
Awesome! Welcome to Handheld Gaming!
Subscribed and I look forward to following this tutorial. So simple and well made.
Thank you so much. Appreciate the kind words. This is what motivates us to continue helping others
Thank you bro this is the BEST guide out there for dual boot steam deck setup.
You're welcome!
If anybody has the issue of "windows could not prepare the computer to boot". When you partition the STEAM DECK SSD, make sure to make the partitioned amount NTFS otherwise it will not work. It cannot be unallocated or any other format. I spent 2 hours finding this out so hopefully it helps somebody
Thank you very much for this. I experienced this error and had to format the Windows Partition as NTFS within the Steam Recovery partitioning tool.
Thank you for this post. I couldn't figure out why steamos kept referring back to the entire drive.
@@AlexStLouis-gq8kp I am running in to this error. Am i supposed to luanch back into the Steam Recovery KDE Partition Manager and delete the partition, then reformat it as ntfs? or can I just change the format without deleting?
I have a one doubt... Why he resize 256 sd card in KDE .... Windows going to install in SD card?....tell pls... Sry for bad english
Just incase someone needed help figuring out how to do this (like me) all you need to do is right click the partition and change the file system to ntfs
THIS is how instructional videos should be done. Professional in every sense of the word!
Thank you sir! Appreciate the feedback
Great tutorial, made this process work flawlessly in 2024! Long, but it covers everything in perfect detail!
Very informative video! I will try this out sometime
This guide is really really good man thanks
Glad it helped
Nevermind, I got it working. Damn as easy at it looks it took me almost 4 hours to finish this since I fiddled with mine after work. Working great now! Thanks a lot man.
Awesome! Glad it worked out for you
@@OVERKILLGAMING786 Man, I can't seem to enjoy windows on my Steam Deck. I keep getting BSOD while in-game, it's frustrating.
very helpful followed every step right works perfectly good job man
Awesome! Glad it helped
Great video, guys. Glad Mute was mentioned in the video. Helped me out a lot in discord. I totally get the questions about how it worked before but not now kind of things. It really kept me from tinkering up till now. I didn't feel like I was a bother at all when yall helped me out. Thanks a lot.
Mute is a big help to all of us. He and I both have ordered the Ally as well, so we can't wait to start tinkering on that soon
Very comprehensive... Thank you.
You're welcome!
Thank you, works like a charm :D
Starting to watch these tutorials before I preorder the new oled deck next week!!!

Thank you for the video ! This is really helpful for someone like me who is not tech savvy 🙏🏻
You're welcome!
Dope Stuff man!! So many opportunities in handheld hybrid gaming..
Hey thanks ChariotMan! Yes, I believe this is the future of gaming
@@OVERKILLGAMING786 Yes sir!! You know it. Ready for that ROG Ally
One thing to note is, if you make a MicroSD bootable in Linux, you may have trouble in Windows, where the drive may not even appear with drive letter or in partitioning tools. You can fix this by using Ext2Fsd to recognize the drive, give it a letter, and format it for Windows.
I'm having that issue
i have the same issue. when you format it for windows will it remove all the files i have in that drive??
Overkill knocks it out of the park with this tut, absolutely brilliant. Thanks for putting the effort into this. I, as well as alot of others genuinely appreciate your effort bro. Very well done! now, my only question is, whats that live desktop your rocking? haha! cheers.
Glad it helped! There is the app that I use from Steam called Wallpaper Engine. And it is one of the wallpapers they have available. Thank you for the kind words. It provides us motivation to continue
Thanks for the video! And thanks for the clover recommendation, I was testing refind before I installed windows, and it wasn't working. With clover, I got the dual boot interface, even with just steamos 😊
Awesome! Glad to hear it's working out for you
honestly I thought this was a really big channel when I seen this but I just noticed. you deserve way more than 5.29k subs
Thank you sir! I appreciate the kind words. We will eventually get there. We appreciate the support and glad to help out the community. We have a Discord also if you have questions or run into any issues. Feel free to drop by.
Superb, Thank you very much
Well done guide!
Hey, thanks Bald Sealion!
Thank you for making this video it helped me a lot. I got everything to work. To make Bluetooth work I had to create a folder called "REALTEK" in the Program Files folder under Local Disk (C:) -> Drag the whole Bluetooth driver installer folder into desktop -> open it -> right click the installer then "Run as Administrator" (Works right after without restarting).
For the Handheld Companion app get the latest version online instead of the link provided in the description. Using the old version of the app then updating manually within the app breaks the app (The app won't open after the update for some reason).
I'll make sure to replace the link in the description. Thanks for the heads up!
Thank you for this great tutorial!
You're very welcome!
Got my new steam deck 512 model, all set up to Dual Boot menu unreal highly appreciated 👌 but confusing but I managed 😅
Glad it helped!
Such a good guide!
Thanks. Glad it was helpful
great video. thank you so much!!
Thanks!
Nice video man! VEry well explained. One thing to mention is that it can take up 30 minutes to partition the drive. While so the progress bar will stay at 0% (atleast it did for me). And went all the way up to 100% at once when it was finished. I can imagine people not being patient and thinking what the hell is going wrong. But just be patient it is running in the background.
Glad everything worked out for you. Interesting that it took thirty minutes. I think for me it took about ten minutes or so.
subscribed, thanks
Hi, I'd like to say a massive thank you for this complete tutorial. Very helpful to me, and awesome with the tweaks.
You're very welcome!
finaly usefull video thanks so much
Glad it helped
I watched your previous guide. Very detailed and answered all of the questions that popped into my head.
Btw would you consider doing a gameplay test for Gundam Battle Operation 2 on the steam deck with windows? It's a recent port from Playstation to PC. The game is free to play on steam. I searched everywhere but I can't find anyone showing anything like this.
Yeah, I can do that if it's free to play
gracias por el tutorial, me llevo medio dia pero lo logre . tienes un seguidor mas
Muchas Gracias!
I was having an issue where it said windows would not create a partition, when I could get it to work it would give me the windows cannot reboot this device error. To fix this I had to select MBP instead of GPT partition in rufus
This took atleast 4 hours to do I had to redo the recovery drive step twice because for some reason it wasn’t saving the changes to the disk partition then it took forever to setup handheld companion but in the end I got it to work, also if you need a cd key, I got a working one at gamers outlet for like 5 bucks
*make sure it matches the version you set up*
Getting a steam deck soon this is gonna be the first thing i will do
Great tutorial! I had issues with Rufus and Windows 11. I got the 'Windows Could Not Prepare the Computer to Boot' error. I fixed this by using the creation tool to prepare the USB directly.
Awesome! Glad everything is working for you
Hi I'm running into the same issue, what do you mean when you said you used the creation tool to prepare the USB directly??
@@jackisokI can’t seem to get it figured out either and have used Rufus and windows USB creation tool and still get the same error
Hello. On my Boot Manager, I have
2 SteamOS. How do I delete
one of them? They both use
the same directory so I'm afraid to
use the Konsole comm. to delete it.
okay so i dont understand after 3:38 when i boot with the usb drive it promps me to instal windows it doesnt take me to the screen you were on to partition the sd card
I had refind dual boot before but ended up having issues. I've fully got windows on it now but I may do this instead once I get a 2tb
I had followed a different guide to dualboot windows on steam deck and after 3 days I finally managed to do the whole process only to be hugely dissappinted by the performance I was getting on the games I could not play on steam OS, not even mentioning the fact I could not get the controllers to work outside of games downloaded on steam, but now that I watched your video I'll be going back to windows for a final try on playing fortnite and COD on my steam deck, hopefully with HC and removing bloatware, performance and controller issues will be reduced enogh for those games to be playable.
Awesome! I have vids up for those games running on the Steam Deck so that you can get a sneak peak at how well those games performed as well.
So I'm planning on doing this to add a small build of batocera to my steam deck, not windows. Same order of events. One question though. The steam recovery image is necessary to be able to access and resize the internal ssd and add the new partition that will eventually hold the new OS, right? You can't just add a partition to the internal ssd while runnig steam os. I think that's right.
I did not know steam OS had a partition editor in its desktop mode. I had used Gparted for the drive resize, lol.
Nice job
Thank you!
Great tutorial. I do have a question about the partition part. I only have windeck on my current drive, so I need to partion to add steam OS. Can I do this with your steps? Seems it would be a little different in my case. Also would I lose everything currently on my SSD if I do?
Right... In your case you would have to install SteamOS over Windows. Then you would partition and then reinstall Windows. So, I would make a backup of important files before doing this and then restore those important files (drivers, games, apps, etc.)
Hey, what format are you using your micro sd card to run the games? Also does windows automatically put the shader cache to the ssd ? Or the to the micro sd card? Thank you
I use the NTFS file format. In regards to the location where Steam stores the file shaders, my assumption is that it would be in the same library folder as the actual game
you are the best bro
No. You are the best bro.
Hello! I have installed Windows 10 Enterprise on my brand new SSD First. Will I still be able to dual boot to SteamOS using this trick?
hi, for a new ssd i need to install SteamOS firts, so i can go to the menu and do the partition of the ssd? i didn't understan that part of the video. Or by choosing the recovery iso of sd card it will install steamos and do the partition at same time?
So, for a new SSD, you'll want to install it first. Then use the recovery software to install Steam OS. Then use the recovery software to partition to SSD using KDE partition manager
Very helpful thank you!! I get an error when opening handheld companion saying your pc doesn't have an app that can open this link. I tried searching for xbox game bar in the store but there's only an xbox app. I updated it and followed your tutorial as if it was the game bar but I don't think it's the same.
Thank you so much for making this video. It helped me a ton!
I was able to get everything installed and loaded up game pass through the Xbox app but I keep getting this error. I've went through deleting the Xbox app resetting the store and verifying login information matches. Can't get past it though. Have you seen this before?
clip license device id does not match
Masterpiece
Thanks!
My steamdeck froze after opening the file from the flas drive. Its stuck on the steam logo and the loading wheel at the bottom hasn't moved. I'm afraid to turn it off and on again.
hi! i have done everything and it works! i also partitioned my SD card using ur other video. ty so much for making this. when i start the device clover has 3 options:
steamOS, Windows Internal SSD (where windows is), and windows external ssd/microSD.
any idea how to hide the microSD option? also it looks like it is shuffling thru different themes, i don’t really want that lol i imagine the options are explained in the github but i figured i would leave the questions here and try to answer them myself later
Glad you got it working. You know I was never really bothered by the third option or the alternating background so I never thought to look into how to change those things. More than likely the GitHub will have some instructions on how to change it. You can also reach other to Ryan Rudolph. He's pretty responsive and eager to answer questions.
Bro u saved my life I wasted so many hrs with another guy on TH-cam bro method is solid is even faster than this one but he never updated on the garbled screen nd u even included all that extra stuff drivers nd apps other TH-camr is just straight installing windows and that’s it that shit all laggy af nd for a guy a like me nd more beginner out there u the guy thanks bro keep doin yo thang fr

Just clover and steam os. I reinstalled windows like three times already and it keeps disappearing from boot manager. And when I try to use clover menu to load into windows it just shows a bunch of blue lines and I can't see nothing. Please tell me what do I do

Damn dude, great guide and well narrated! You should do voice acting, you have a very unique voice.
Lol.. thanks bro!
Thank you for the great video. My Steamdeck arrives tomorrow. Along with a 1TB SSD to replace the factory 64 GB. I also have the 1 TB ScanDisk extreme. Would you recommend making a bigger windows partition to install windows games on the SSD or a small partition to utilize the microSD for Windows game storage? I would image if you use the microSD for Windows games, you format (NTFS) the entire microSD?
Congrats on getting the Steam Deck! As for the partition, I have tried both ways based on my gaming habits. If you play a lot of games that only run on Windows and want better performance than I would allocate more space on the SSD for Windows. If there are only a couple of games that only run on Windows and most of your library runs on SteamOS, then I would give Windows about 64GB and use the SD card to store the games. And yes, you will want to format the SD card as NTFS but I believe you can also format as BTRFS as well
@@OVERKILLGAMING786 thank you for the quick reply. I assumed you would provide that feedback. I’ll need to figure that out overnight. Once again, I really appreciate the video and the added advice. You rock
So if I followed this method and didn’t want windows anymore would I just boot into steamos recovery mode and delete the windows partition and add it back to the steam os one?
The easiest way to reset it back to SteamOS only would be to reimage the drive using the recovery software because you would not only have to delete the main Windows partition and resize the SteamOS partition to take up the rest of the space, but you would also have to delete the Windows EFI boot partitions as well. So, I would recommend a full reimage or clone your SteamOS partition to another drive before setting up the dual boot and if you decided to return to full SteamOS then you can just restore it with all of your games and settings in tact the way you had it. We have a video on how to clone and restore... th-cam.com/video/IF6UAVfWKDs/w-d-xo.html
Hi, do I have to reimage before doing this or can I just resize my ssd even if it’s half full already ?
You can resize without reimaging as long as there is enough space available for your intended setup on the new partition
if for some reason i decided to remove windows and return to having only steam os, can i merge the partition made for windows back to the one with the steam os?
It may be possible. Never tried it. Whenever I decided to have a full SteamOS device I just reimaged it and redownloaded the games.
I just ordered my sad upgrade (1TB) for my 64gb steam deck. Can I add the dual boot while I switch my ssd or do I need to change it, add steamos. Then restart and readd dual boot?
Basically, what you will want to do is install the SSD, then either before or after installing SteamOS (either way will work) partition the SSD with the size that you will want for SteamOS and Windows. After partitioning and installing SteamOS, you can install Windows. I would think over how much space you will need for both because if you decide you want to change it later, you will have to reimage the SSD and then repeat the entire process over again.
only issue I had was being unable to click "install" for the audio drivers. When i right click it doesnt give the option. anyone have any solutions
So, the way to install the audio driver is to first click on it, and then you'll see a ✔️ appear. Then right click on it and it will give you the option to install.
Thanks for the guide, very straight forward easy guide and took me about an hour to do everything. Question though, how did you map the steam button to start menu? There's no Windows Start Menu option under hotkey? Also, not sure if you played roblox, but roblox won't detect any of my controls if I disable Desktop layout unless I launch steam. If I enable Desktop layout, it acts like a mouse and it's very hard to play with the cursor. Do you maybe know any way to fix this? I tried DS4Wireless, but DS4 doesn't detect the controller at all.
Nevermind, switching to xbox controller fixed roblox issue. Also, assigned the Windows start button from Desktop layout.
Awesome! Glad you got it working
Hey sorry I'm a total noob to everything to do with this!
So when you're saying download Rufus and the steam drivers for windows etc, do I download all of them onto the thumbdrive, and run all the exe.s etc for them too on the thumb drive? Essentially everything that says 'all downloads used' I do onto the thumb drive first? Thank you!
Rufus will need to be downloaded to your PC and you will use that to create the Windows image. I usually put the drivers on the thumb drive after I have created the image
@@OVERKILLGAMING786firstly, thanks for replying! However I downloaded Rufus, partitioned it, and it split my USB stick into like 4 drives, none showed up when manual booting the steamdeck, and then it totally bricked my USB stick... Any idea what happened 😢
When i Write the last command they said to me « rEFInd is Not détected Proceeding with the cliver install » help pls
sorry i have a question... so when i partition the ssd a part holds SteamOS and the other Windows, but is it possible to intstall games there too or games can be installed only on the SD card?
ty for the help :)
Feel free to ask any question you have. Yes, you can install games on both partitions based on the amount of space you choose to allocate for each partition. However, the games on the Windows side will not be accessible to SteamOS and vice versa. So, the way I typically use this is I install games I want to play in SteamOS on the Steam partition while in SteamOS, and games I want to play in Windows on the Windows side.
I have 1tb in mine i shrunk the steam os to 64gb and made a window partition to 64gb then made another partition in ntfs for the remaining memory, in kde partition manager i set a mount point for the nfts so it auto mounts in steam os and add it in on desktop mode open steam go to settings, storage, click on pluss add folder where u set the mount point to and all games installed should read on boot both in windows and steam os
Thanks for shearing your knowledge sir I just have one question does work if i want to go with the process on laptop?
So, as of right now Clover is only working with SteamOS which I am not sure can be installed to a laptop. But, once Clover gets tweaked and works with ChimeraOS, then you should have no problem using this on a laptop.
I already downloaded the windows 11 ios in my usb drive and waiting for my 1TB ssd to arrive and save all the necessary files to follow up your guide thx again for making it possible and easy to do
so when i have the thumb drive connected to the deck in the beginning i boot with that drive and it isnt loading into the os, it just shows the steam logo and infinitely loads, is there any way to fix this?
So, this is common actually. I normally let it sit for about five minutes to load up and then it goes into it. Anything longer than that is abnormal. At that point I would try another drive.
hello i have a question. i just buy second hand steamdeck with dualboot manager. i have no problem going into windows 11, but when i was going into boot manager and choosing steamos it gave error like sending me to gnu grub version 2.06 and it said "minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, tab list possible command completion. anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completion"
what should i do? the previous owner said i should have just go into steamos withour problem. is it because they log out from their account?
If it were me I would reinstall everything from scratch because we don't know how he had it set up or what he did
While deck is off hold the 3 dots button and vol + turn deck on (still holding the 3 dot and vol +) select steam os should let u erase user data sorta a factory reset without touching the windows partition
I am mainly a mobile gamer, but mobile games have become stale. I wanted to stay mobile, but head toward pc gaming and decided on the steam deck. Went with the 64 gig, installed a 1TB and followed your video for windows dual boot. Thank you for the help and now for some big boy COD!
Awesome! Welcome to the wonderful world of PC Mobile Gaming!
hows the performance and was it easy ? sorry for the questions lol
Yeah I echo the same questions as above - how is it working and how was the process?
@hqqq9792 funny story.... I returned the steam deck after hours of hastling with it. It worked great but hooking it up to a TV or capture card was a nightmare from hell. #ROGAlly gang now
